hey everyone and welcome back to the world of warcraft Legion video today we're going to be talking about something that might seem boring at the outset but is extremely useful it's a feature that i'm going to elevate to sort of hidden gem status with Legion so tab targeting is pretty much the main way that many of us target different things in the agents so here i am i'm on my hunter I've got whole bunch of targets gonna spam through hitting the tab button as you can see it goes through all of the targets now it's generally fine if you're only dealing with a few targets in front of your character right pretty do pretty easy to deal with but it can be quite a problem if you've got a whole bunch of things in front of you there at different you know levels sort of Z positions away from you so there's a bit of depth going on the system gets a bit confused now additionally they actually changed how the default tab targeting works if you want to change that back to the old version link in the description that will get you sorted but this is a new method of targeting that was added in Legion it's not 100-percent perfect and robust so it's not a default part of the UI but you can't access it if you go to keybindings go to targeting and then go to scan a target scan enemy hold you might be wondering how does this work not just first I have it bound to mouse button for that's just below my scroll wheel so it's super convenient to press and this really does change how I target things in many circumstances actually first found out about this because i was discussing tanking on the Vengeance there have a demon hunter with the kill mate who said by the way I just found out this new feature and it makes tanking so much easier and this seems like it'll be awesome for tax trying to target the right thing so i'm holding the i'm going to hold mouse button for right now and you can see this little halo appears right in front of my character so when I move you can see it's sort of targets whatever is in front of me and then when i release my mouse button for it's now my property target so basically this will scan for things directly in front of your character sort them by distance to your character and whenever you let go it will target that thing i found that this is a lot more predictable and usable than the tab targeting system so I'm here I want to target the thing to my right I just do this and it's targeted i just find this to be a way way sort of easier and more reliable way to em deal with targeting game rather than you know looking at these four targets and thinking how will target do without you know deal with them a little bit of an interesting question because top targeting generally multiple bit inconsistent sometimes now there are advanced uses for this functionality which as a hunter are not really a thing I need to worry about but if you're perhaps a multi Dalton class it could really help you out so i'm going to target this training dummy in front of me and then go to hold mouse button for and sort of soft targets i'm gonna call it a soft target the target on me in front of me so you'll just see what I'm doing my aim shots here they're hitting my current target now I'm going to release the mouse button for and now you can see I've swapped target and i can easily swap back again so you might be thinking well that's just not that useful bit fiddly if you are a hunter imagine I'm a rogue you know maybe I'm going to be attacking this right imagine i'm doing melee attacks right now okay and I want to grow the target that's like beside me well I just need to go mouse button for hit my keybind for kuro go back to whatever my original target walls or you know what whatever and bleed you want to put on so if your multi bleeding targets in melee range this could be quite useful and i have found those times when there's you know a cone of enemies in front of me attacking me from different angles it's far easier to sort of target with a system like this then it is to either use my mouse to click and things which can be a little bit fiddly especially depending on the behavior of the overlapping and unit for not your frames and nameplates and that can be a little bit inconsistent them targeting can be a bit inconsistent so I think this is a method that you know you could integrate into your gameplay it could be very useful something that I think is especially useful for a tank because that's when you know you're targeting in melee range really helps there's times you know imagine there's an npc that's just my right that I notice is casting a spell i need to interrupt i can just quickly you know do a twitch release the mouse button for which is my mikey been for this and very quickly I can target just about anything its way that you know if you're a counter-strike player you can really use those twitch reflexes that you will have developed to target things better world of warcraft which should make you a player with faster response times there for someone is a bit more reliable and overall just a little bit better to have in your rate it's not perfect functionality but it really is getting there i would personally recommend binding this to one of the buttons on your mouse that you're not using thats what i find to be very comfortable and i also do want to talk about this thing's potential if you were to plug in a gamepad and using out on like console port now you know I i bring up this because i think the idea of trying to make world of warcraft feel like god of war is just the interesting topic to discuss it's not viable you know we're not really discussing about it in those terms but something like this is another pretty cool way of targeting that you could use with a gamepad set up to you know just get something feels a little bit more action-packed so perhaps that's an experiment but i will do in the future and Wizardry enable the actioncam functionality now I'm going to show it not really working perfectly here because it's important you know that it doesn't work perfectly so right now bunch of targets they're pretty much all you know they're on top of each other and right now a little bit inconsistent feedback so if you've got a massive pack of tiny mobs this might not be the best way of doing things but i think this is certainly a worst-case scenario and if this is just another thing that's in your toolkit well then you can bring it out in the right situation on account hopefully improve your game play I'm really happy that I found out about this just before the metaclass dungeons and raids open because i think it's something that will overall make me a little bit of a better player not going to change the world will come in handy anyway that's it for this video I hope you found it useful thank you very much for watching and I'll see you next time
I have no idea how many groups I've pulled as a boomkin, trying to tab-target-dot mobs in a group, and get mobs waaaaaay in the distance or in the room on the side, or whatever. Having the longest range in the game seems great, until you start tab-targeting and pull yet another group of trash-mobs. This might be a lifesaver. Literary!
The problem is not to tab-target mobs. A few abilities are bugged, also a dozen trinkets (with AoE or Dots). They really need to fix it. I love my boomkin, but this gets annoying. :D
Stevie Bellard The problem is tab-targetting. You can literally target mobs in other rooms. It makes target switching for dotting up extremly annoying. I dont know any other way to target without trying to manually target them with the mouse.
I already had a chat with a GM. He confirmed, that there is a problem/bug with trinkets and dot-spells. If I attack a target with Starsurge and a mob suddenly receives my trinket-dot that is 30 yards away (not infight with me), then there is cleary no problem with tab-targetting.
As a multidotting class, this could be useful, but I suggest getting the add-on "Enemy Grid" That displays enemies on the screen in a way much like Grid does for your raid members, and you can manually click, or mouseover them to throw your DoT's. It also tracks duration on the dots etc.
Hey you have my bow. Give it back! Regarding targeting, 99% of the time it's easiest/fastest to just click the nameplate, and in situations where there are a lot of adds, and the nameplates overlap too much, a simple camera adjustment usually will do the trick. I've recently been using an addon called Enemy Grid, and find it very helpful. It's like a smaller, customizable Healbot, but for enemies/dps. I have it setup to only show enemies within range. It will show my debuffs along with timers and it shows their castbars. But what's really useful is that you can set up custom functions. Like, I have mine set up so that if I left click on the mob's frame, I interrupt, and if I right click on the frame, I misdirect. Much easier to keep track of than the nameplates.
As a note, you don't need to "Hold" the button. You can just tap it and it will grab the mob directly in front of you. Only "hold" if you want to actually scan around as you move the mouse. In your "twich" tank counterspell example, you could twist the view THEN tap the button instead of holding it while twisting. And it will function like a better "target nearest enemy" As long as it was the mob directly in your LOS.
Just a note, the action cam isn't actually removed, you just can't enable it for normal use. You can see it still working very clearly on certain vehicle quests, most notably the T-rex quest in Suramar. It's most likely that is how they intended for its use in the first place, considering the only way to activate it was with a console command, and Blizz has made it pretty clear they're not fans of camera changes via console commands.
Thank you Thank you Thank you!!! I have been pointing and clicking with my hunter for years and always not getting the target. This makes it so much easier!!!
Just gotta say ive been watching your channel since Blizz announced Legion. By now every video you made was both professional informative and fun to watch. Keep the good job Bell love your vids and as a rogue this helped in so many ways.....
Thanks for the key binding tip - even though I am getting it two years later. Your content is straightforward, thought out, well explained, and easy to understand so I subscribed and I am looking forward to watching more of your videos. By the way, what nameplate/frames addon are you using in this video and have you done any videos on good WoW addons?
I am mainly a melee/tank player. I feel like to bind this to right button and the old right button to an extra mouse key. It's super handy if you need constant turning and repositioning.
Unfortunately this doesn't solve my multi dotting issue on shadow priest with 3-6 targets stacked untop of eachother they will block eachother just like with the tapping and clicking.
Huh. All these years I've just been manually clicking on my target. Never knew about tab targeting in the past 10 years I've been playing. So many new things I've been learning from Bellular in the past few months that supposedly everyone has known for years.
I've just always been fine with manually clicking targets. If I don't have a problem with it, and no one has told me there was another way, why should I know? As a DPS, it's not as though manual targeting is actually bad. It gets the job done.
As a boomkin, tab-target-dotting has been HORRIBLE in dungeons, since I can sometimes need to tab 7+ times, just to get back to the group we're actually fighting instead of the next group, or the group BEHIND the next group. I'll be sure to try this out, as I'm sure it'll save a LOT of time, and increase aoe-dps immensily! (And save a few wipes, possibly.) :)
This new thing is a huge help for gamepad players Inb4 lots of comments "duh you can't play with only 8 buttons, that's only 8 different skills" because they just can't think about using some buttons as modifiers (alt/shift/ctrl)
This scan targeting could be great with the action cam because I know one of the big complaints about the action can was that tab targeting wasn't integrated well enough with it
Thanks a alot Bel for this very useful and informative video. I didn't know the option to use the old targeting system (which i greatly prefer) was available until now! Cheers!
Would you be able to go one step further by making a macro that you could essentially click Tab once to do the old tab target method, but holding down the button would use this "new" method?
I will say that after playing on my feral druid and even on my wind walker monk, the tab targeting is much better and has a "smart" targeting feature built in. For instance, when I would tab target it seemed to prioritize enemies without my rake bleed or spinning crane kick debuff on them over targets that I had already applied the bleed/debuff to. This way I could literally hit tab, rake, tab rake, tab rake.
Having tried this, it's not something I prefer over just clicking on the nameplate... However having used ConsolePort I fully believe this feature is intended for console WoW.
that's really useful advice, thanks. Even if you have a group of tightly packed opponents in front of you, at least this way you make sure to target one of them, and not one of the next group :)
Thank you for your video. I tried this and didn't like it so I made a macro /targetenemy and placed it next to my cobra shot. I love it and it's pretty easy to use. Placing it next to the main spell is a lot better than having to click on the mouse button 4. I'm not used to it and I don't care for raised buttons on my mouse(I use a Logitech trackball, which I love). Love your accent, btw :)
Hey i was wondering if you can help me, I am using nvidia surround with three monitors and obs studio, I only want to capture the center monitor of game play but I havent been able to figure out how to, any tips?
Sure, that may be useful on melee class. I think im gonna try it on my monk. But as a ranged main i doubt im gonna use that. But anyway that's cool option that i didnt knew about. (sorry 4 my english :P )
Turning to face a new mob can already be achieved via keyboard and mouse, it's also more reliable if there is a mob standing slight in front of my intended target. As for targeting nearby mobs like in your Garrote example, mouseover macro's are again more reliable and versatile since I can do what you described without even deselecting my current target which means no loss in dps. The only people I can see this really catering too are the _"never keyboard turn, ever!"_ crowd, I could see an option like this really gaining ground among them players. Personally I rarely used tab to cycle targets, mouse targeting was almost always faster and more reliable. Do most players actually use tab to cycle targets as their primary way of selecting targets? If they do then it would definitely explain why so many people have trouble multi-tasking multiple targets.
This feature was broken with the release of patch 7.1. Temporary fix is to enter '/console TargetNearestUseOld 0' into chat. This seems to manually overwrite the broken feature in the keybindings menu.
Seems like a good pro-immersion change if nothing else. Might also be handy in Mythic+ dungeons where time is of the essence (and nobody stops moving for a single second). And I'll give them this: it's intuitive. My character looks at a thing, and it gets highlighted. cool.
I think this was a side effect of Blizzard trying to create an Action Cam style gamepad system. They tried it in beta and very early legion, but it was causing other bugs. Looks really useful for any melee especially.
I saw that in the keybinds, but when i pressed it nothing happens and got confused. I never used it after that. Not sure what button i want to bind it to tho. I'll probably just make room on my mouse like you
Blizzard should improve the 'assist' function. 99% of the time targeting issues are: You accidentally cycle through targets and target something the tank hasnt pulled... and wipe the run. Or you are careful, cycle through too slowly and barely get any attacks in or get complaints about low dps. Especially since tanks nowadays just rush through dungeons and dont do the "collect and bring back" thing anymore, what you should be able to do is just target the tank (or any other character) and then cycle through all targets targeting HIM (and no others until you manually deselect the the assist target, or press a special key) and thereby prevent targeting non-pulled mobs. Especially for DOT heavy DPS or others that need to cast stuff at many mobs in rapid succession that would be a godsend, and it would be more realistic. In a real fight i would not suddenly by mistake take careful aim and shoot my rifle at a person walking 1 km away when i am intending to fire at the next one in a bunch of people 100 m away.
Is there a way to make this method of targeting just be "on" at all times? I use Mouselook Handler and have abilities bound to my mouse keys and honestly believe that if this could let you just target what you are looking at it would be awesome. More or less like reticle targeting from action MMOs. This would also help with interacting with lootable objects and corpses.
Not sure if I missing something or my game is screwed up, I've just tested this setting compared to the default I don't see a difference. I get the glow when I look at the enemy and target it when I let go. :S
know what makes tanking easier. Play protection paladin and just area of effect spam. Divine hammer, consecration, avengers shield. And paladin's have tons of tank CD both short and long ones.
i use addon that locks my mouse and I dont have to hold right click to turn and move, with this thing makes it really "actiony"... its especially good as mellee....and also i can use left and right click to bind it on some skills, turned my wow into action game, i'm having the best time ever with wow in years!
just make sure you keybind it properly, to unlock your mouse to click things and you get used to very fast, i'm tanking mythic dungeons no problem, will raid with it too...
I play a hunter as well, and was just looking for a better way to target. Thank you!! Also, how do you feel about the barrage change?? Its been frustrating me.
Yeah, I'm use to kiting and positioning myself so i know it'll only hit what i want, but this change makes that impossible, just goes right on through :/. I enjoy AOE dmg for questing so I've been stuck with volley, its not bad, just prefer the old barrage :(
I just recently switched to and it does a good job for the small mobs, combined with binding shot its not bad. I'm still testing it out some, I'll probably try out Crows too. Just a habit of mine to focus on aoe ;)
I was a huge aoe fan/user in WoD, it was fun pulling 10+ mobs and misdirect everything on our immortal pet. The thing is... Legion is not (yet) the place for mass-aoe. Without a proper misdirect tool it's annoying, because you will always hev mobs on you. Sure, you can aoe 4-5 at once but not 10 or more. I miss that.
As a Shadow priest I have to say that this seems pretty useless compared to tab-targeting, which is also less than ideal. The best thin you can do is use something like ElvUI that lets you keep track of your dots on the nameplates of untargeted enemies, and use a combination of Tab and clicking to cycle through them. Trying to face the target like this is going to take precious seconds that you should be spending refreshing those DoT's, and how well this works depends entirely on how your tank is doing and how they like to tank the mobs. Either way, trying to face your targets like this is generally not a good idea for multi-dotting.
for some reason i never listen to your words, but i tab to another page or whatever and just listen to you're voice, it's on par with morgan freeman's for me.
Man... the amount of times that I and many others have mixed havoc and vengeance DH when talking about their tanking spec. lol Why does it seem like havoc should be the tank spec?!?
Thanks for the tip. This will definitely come in handy while tanking dungeons. Although it would have been nice if you'd disabled your addons for this one. Or maybe done a clip with and one without. My interface is VERY different from yours :)

Not again...
cuz who needs to breathe
Grats, you transcribed me without ending yourself. I can't even do that.
thanks am deaf
BellularGaming Me either. That's why UA-cam does it for me
I don't always use tab-targeting...but when I do I'm certain to end up targeting a mob 3 rooms away.
This is the real struggel!

Why was this not talked about more, this is amazing.
pretty useless in a pvp situation or raidencounter in wow
What about Arena?
Good luck having that in rbg or normal bg, for that this feature is far better than the current system.
thats why u use mouseover macros. no need to pick a focus.
you still should have a target in focus tho. Otherwise mouseover is quite useless.,
Thank goodness! I thought I was going crazy thinking that my Tab targeting was just 'off'. Now I know it was actually changed. Nice vid
This can be useful, sure.
Personally I bind next and previous target to mouswheel up and down. That will get you through targets really fast.
Shit that's a nice idea I'm stealing it :)
Nice! Thanks I'll give that a shot as well as this method on vid :)
***** left alt + mouse wheel. But really any modifier will do the trick.
one does not usually need the camera zoom. Nice idea.
This is freaking awesome man!

teejus101 I recently found this addon as well, it makes it soo much easier, but thank you for mentioning it ^^
Nice! Thanks for sharing. Also thank you for UI tips on a previous video. Enjoying the game so much more now.
After playing an MMO with action combat I've been spoiled and finding it hard to go back to tab targeting, this is an interesting alternative!

Have sent this to guild tanks...ty as always for your input.
Omg this literally makes the dps classes I play fun again. Thank you so much for your consistent, helpful videos.

so... could I bind it with a movement button like jump or foward so that way when I move to a new group of enemies, it targets the closest enemy?
This scan targeting could be great with the action cam because I know one of the big complaints about the action can was that tab targeting wasn't integrated well enough with it
Thanks a alot Bel for this very useful and informative video. I didn't know the option to use the old targeting system (which i greatly prefer) was available until now! Cheers!
I'm gonna try your method,it seems pretty interesting and useful too.
Great video,really liked it.
This way I could literally hit tab, rake, tab rake, tab rake.
it's not prioritizing enemies without your debuffs, it just go through all the targets you haven't targeted before.
This feature could have been a whole new patch for wod xD and they ddnt even mention it in legion features ?! Good news guys, blizz is doing it right
Having tried this, it's not something I prefer over just clicking on the nameplate...
However having used ConsolePort I fully believe this feature is intended for console WoW.
THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING!!! Thank you for that video, I would have never discovered this myself :)
They freaking broke targeting as far as I'm concerned- thanks for the info on how to reset it to the old way
What's the mount you're using in the vid?
that's really useful advice, thanks.
Just click on frame, that's a CS:GO player reflex
Eh not convenient if you are already turning via right click. Eg tank turning to face new mob and targeting them in the same motion.
Sure, that may be useful on melee class. I think im gonna try it on my monk. But as a ranged main i doubt im gonna use that. But anyway that's cool option that i didnt knew about. (sorry 4 my english :P )
Well, if you tank at all, you'll realize how amazing this is.
Agreed.
I think scroll over is still better for me but thanks for the info.
tbh i never had an issue with tab targetting, pretty sure it works in cohesion with where you're looking
Hey man is there anyway I can get a link to the WeakAuras you are using?? :) Love the look of them
Controller support inc
Thanks a lot! I just love your videos, your voice is so soothing, best thing to start relaxing after a long day of work.
This feature was broken with the release of patch 7.1. Temporary fix is to enter '/console TargetNearestUseOld 0' into chat. This seems to manually overwrite the broken feature in the keybindings menu.
Bellular I love your UI, which addons you use for it? thanks!
Where can we get those weakauras for your abilities/focus?
Seems like a good pro-immersion change if nothing else. Might also be handy in Mythic+ dungeons where time is of the essence (and nobody stops moving for a single second). And I'll give them this: it's intuitive. My character looks at a thing, and it gets highlighted. cool.
You had it right the first time, Vengeance is the tank spec.
Ty for this I really needed it for my warrior since I'm switching fury and prot
I think this was a side effect of Blizzard trying to create an Action Cam style gamepad system. They tried it in beta and very early legion, but it was causing other bugs. Looks really useful for any melee especially.
Not sure what i did wrong but i never see the ring when using my keybind, even tried pulling mobs to see if it shows and never does, any help?
thanks for sharing this Bellular!
Also mouseover targeting can be used like (example with healing spell)
#showtooltip Holy Light
/cast [target=mouseover, exists] Holy Light; Holy Light
Wow. I play a rogue and Unholy DK and this is gonna be super useful when i get used to it. THANX
I saw that in the keybinds, but when i pressed it nothing happens and got confused. I never used it after that. Not sure what button i want to bind it to tho. I'll probably just make room on my mouse like you
Blizzard should improve the 'assist' function. 99% of the time targeting issues are:
You accidentally cycle through targets and target something the tank hasnt pulled... and wipe the run.
Thanks, I was wondering what feature was and how it worked.
I don't know why I am going back looking at legion stuff again. But man I miss this xpac.
Is there a way to make this method of targeting just be "on" at all times? I use Mouselook Handler and have abilities bound to my mouse keys and honestly believe that if this could let you just target what you are looking at it would be awesome. More or less like reticle targeting from action MMOs. This would also help with interacting with lootable objects and corpses.
so what's with the actioncam bellular? are they bringing it back or what?
I believe they are bringing it back at a later date. That's what they said at least, hoping they do bring it back, seemed like a really nice feature.
Gettin' ready for VR.
Not sure if I missing something or my game is screwed up, I've just tested this setting compared to the default I don't see a difference. I get the glow when I look at the enemy and target it when I let go. :S
I think this works with tab too. what ever target you are facing the tab target chooses it first.
How do you have "Smooth scrolling" When you zoom out it's smooth instead of choppy
know what makes tanking easier. Play protection paladin and just area of effect spam. Divine hammer, consecration, avengers shield. And paladin's have tons of tank CD both short and long ones.
I suggest checking out the add-on "enemy grid"
i use addon that locks my mouse and I dont have to hold right click to turn and move, with this thing makes it really "actiony"... its especially good as mellee....and also i can use left and right click to bind it on some skills, turned my wow into action game, i'm having the best time ever with wow in years!
what addon is that ? :)
EzeTarget
mouselook handler, have fun :D
thx !
just make sure you keybind it properly, to unlock your mouse to click things and you get used to very fast, i'm tanking mythic dungeons no problem, will raid with it too...
well if it makes the camera move like Tera or those kinds of MMOs, im gonna have a great time ^^
04:30
Oh god no..another requirement for the "every faction exhalted, 5 million g, 3 legendaries and a kd of 100"-raids
would love to have a vid how how set up ur ui :)
He has already done one
V2 of the UI is mostly done. Vid on it soon.
catdaaaannnnyyyy!!! love you dude
i have to ask isent this how tabtarget workt in wrath and after wrath they changed it to the current system that is not as good ?
I play a hunter as well, and was just looking for a better way to target. Thank you!! Also, how do you feel about the barrage change?? Its been frustrating me.
I still don't like it as it still hits random stuff. It's a little better but unless very specific situations I am now using Crows only.
Yeah, I'm use to kiting and positioning myself so i know it'll only hit what i want, but this change makes that impossible, just goes right on through :/. I enjoy AOE dmg for questing so I've been stuck with volley, its not bad, just prefer the old barrage :(
It seems to me that volley doesn't do any significant damage. Am I wrong?
WHAT ADDons do you use on your hunter?
I use an add on called original tab. it's perfect for dps and prioritizes targets in front of you 1st..also will not target things off screen
Ok, this plus the cutting back on abilities on all classes pretty much confirm that they are working on a console version for wow
I play wow with a nunchuck in my left hand and mmo mouse in right so this will be extremely helpful, thank you!
What UI do you use? :o
very useful, thanks! Also a quick thanks for family-friendly videos.

Yet another change that looks perfect for a console MMO... hmmm
It won't be that bad to have WoW on console that would mean more players which is nice.
Can also result in a split development team...
Faux King Not necessarily it might split the raid difficulties though and may be even PvP
the game would have to be entirely separately balanced from the pc version.
Faux King or the peasants would have to face the fact that their peasants or get their own realms
Ok i just wanna know how u set the name plates like that. Ether its me or my tidy plates aint working correctly
It's like the dark souls camera but while you move your mouse :D nice
is there a toggle on that feature ?
Speaking of mice, does anyone have any advice on a good mouse that has more than four buttons and a mouse wheel?
when are they bringing back the action cam?
@BellularGaming What are you studying in school? You referenced the z axis, and sparked my curiosity!
Can someone tell me what hunter addon is he using?
Hey Bellular good video to show what you are talking about :) Thanks
Oh. Wow. This is exactly what I've always wanted when playing a tank. Finally!
Doesnt tab target already target nearest enemy?.. although it has been inconsistant sometimes
Can I assign this to mouse button four on my Razor Naga Chroma without it changing my DPI setting?
unless you have your DPI adjustment as button 4 it'll work just fine without changing your settings
I never would of found this, thanks for the video.
Hi Bellular do you think if hunter is going to be top dps in raids ?
You mean BM with their aoe ?
MM is far superior in AoE damage. I prefer BM though because both sidewinder and barrage are crazy dangerous right now in accidental pulls.
I thought tab target had changed thanks for posting this
Man... the amount of times that I and many others have mixed havoc and vengeance DH when talking about their tanking spec. lol Why does it seem like havoc should be the tank spec?!?
Thanks for the tip. This will definitely come in handy while tanking dungeons. Although it would have been nice if you'd disabled your addons for this one. Or maybe done a clip with and one without. My interface is VERY different from yours :)
I'll be using this over tab on all my toons
