How to STOP Your Pastels Smudging - My TOP Tip for Black Pastel Pencils - Jason Morgan Art

Have you always wondered how to stop pastels smudging? This can also be a problem with not just pastel sticks , but pastel pencils smudging too. If my pastel pencil drawing doesnt have black stripes like this turtle then it normally works fine just drawing as per normal, as I show in most of my pastel art videos and pastel pencil lessons.
But if you have stripes or spots on your animal then It can be very frustrating when your pastels smudge together and end up a dirty mess. Blending pastels is one of their greatest strengths but when you want you rthick black pastel lines to stay in one place what do you do?

Is there any reason why I couldn't use watercolour with a thicker consistency? I've got watercolours, hundreds of them 😂 but I've only got white in Gouache... if I can use what I have, I'd prefer it, that's all

have you tried black waterproof indian ink instead of gouache

Would some sort of marker pen work on pastelmat? I think a pen of some sort would be easier to use than a brush and paint.

I tried it and it went shiny - I prefer gouache

QUESTION. Have you ever compared spectrum colour pastel ground, which also comes in deep black, with gouache in terms of layering pastels and working the pastels?
