Great video. My two cents: after years of working with all of these brands, I can say with confidence that I use my polychromos for 90% of projects. It’s just more dynamic overall. Generally a ‘better’ pencil in almost all aspects (detail, longevity, coverage, blendability, adaptability, range of paper mediums that it works well on, consistency in mark making). As for the ‘intensity’ issue, I just find that the more pressure and more layers after allowing the pencils to set and rest gives you more opaque colours. You can always go more opaque (with poly) - it’s difficult to force an opaque pencil (like Derwent’s 2 brands and Luminance) to go transparent. As an addition to my polys, I occasionally use the whites from Derwent (lightfast and drawing) for different intensities of white when I’m drawing water, or if there is an intense specular highlight (but this is when I’m too lazy to set layers of poly - but to be clear, if I wanted to get the same intensity with poly - I totally can). But that’s about it. Polychromos for pretty much everything, and then the Derwent whites as add ons. I gave my luminance pencils away to students as I’m not a fan. But I do keep the purples, violets and magentas (5 pencils) I have from luminance, at hand - something about their specific intensity is difficult to beat. Especially for feathers and other majestic ‘details’.
Great to hear your praise of the Polychromos! They are the least pricey artist brand here in Germany, so they are my go-tos. What do you mean by "allowing the pencils to set and rest"?
I love hearing your opinions of your supplies. It's so helpful! Plus, it's great that you preface everything saying "it's my opinion". I appreciate all you do!
Great video! I know that your videos take a lot of time, and work, to make, but I want you to know that I really appreciate it. They have helped me, and my work, tremendously. Thank you! 🤗
This is such a good review thank you xx So much more practical than most other reviews I’ve seen 😊 x Your husband is ace he’s such a good sport to join in 🤣
Thanks for the great explanation of types and uses. I watercolor, and am going to need to experiment with pencils and my current "go to" products of Dr Martin's Bleedproof ink, gouache, Signo Gel Pen and Posca Pen.
awesome! another Matt cameo. You have very talented feet Lisa. And thanks for the shots of mixing the titatium white. Picture paints a thousand words and all that.
@@Lachri I did, thanks. I'm saving up for a set of either Lightfast or Luminance, I'm not sure yet. This helps, and based on the color palette I'm leaning more towards the Lightfast set.
@@ChristinaTodd1970 If it helps, I have both. Luminance 10% and 30% colours are very useful but I love the Derwent lightfast. They are so soft and with oms they blend amazing! Just hope they do more colours soon. You won’t be disappointed with them.🤗
@@denisehopkins7338 Thanks Denise. That does help. I was looking at the 10% and 50% Luminance colors last month when they were $2.11 per pencil. I wish I would have bought them then ☹️ because now they’re back up to a million dollars per pencil. As much as I love those colors I still like the color palette of Lightfast better.
Just a question. Is there an alternative to the liquid you add to the brush n pencil powder? I cannot source the liquid anywhere from my location but can get the texture powder. Thank you.
I've never seen you mention water-soluble wax/oil pastels (like Neocolor II, Crayola Portfolio, etc) which is another way to add opaque white and light highlights. They can be used directly like regular pastels, or painted on with a fine brush. Since the main binder is either wax, oil, or a mix of both, it should be archival over color pencils. (There's definitely plenty of binder left after activating them with water, because they *will not layer* beyond a certain point, unlike most water-based mediums.) I know you have your favorite Brush & Pencil products, but for folks in different countries who don't have access to this brand, alternatives are important.
That's interesting! The reason I don't recommend them is that I've not personally researched or used them so it's not something I would put my name on the line for. Thanks for sharing your experience with them :)
Thank you for suggesting water-soluble wax/oil pastels, I will look into these! I'm in a country where I can't get the brush & pencil products so I've been looking for alternatives.
I enjoyed this video thank you. I might would have mentioned an eraser shield for newbies that don't know about that around the 14:00 mark. Or perhaps that that might be an idea for another video erasers/erasing machine.
That was so helpful, thank you!! I recently got a Faber Castell Goldfaber white and it is really soft and opaque. It’s probably just a bit less opaque than the Derwent Drawing Chinese white, which is my favourite 😊 Besides, the appearance of your husband and the look on his face always make me laugh - really wraps up the artist’s everyday struggle at home 😂
Am so sad it isn’t possible to order the texture touch and white powder outside US UK and Canada 😭 i could possibly get the white titanium but could it be used alone? (The texture touch can’t be shipped by airmail apparently it’s hazardous)
I definitely thought the Caran d’ache white was the best , I have like 10 of them because is what I use the most but that Derwent lightfast and drawing really surprised me
Yeah, that one surprised me too! I would have put money down that the Lumanance would be the more opaque of the two. I even learned something from this!

Great comparison. Derwent lightfast looks awesome! I am searching a set of colored pencil. polychromos and derwent lightfast are in my final list. In my country, Polychromos's price are more reasonable. I am just a hobbyist. Which one will you recommend?
Thank you for this! I find it so difficult to keep the whites still white when doing a painting with coloring pencils. For example, I am trying to do a realistic apple blossom and the whites are not whites anymore! Such a struggle.
Great video Lisa. Among Derwent Watercolor pencils, Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer Watercolor pencils, Caran D'ache watercolor pencils (both the Museum Aquarelle and the Supracolor), and Derwent Inktense, which do you think is the most opaque white?
love this video. it answers almost all of my questions about whites 😀 but I still wonder if white pastel pencil will show up over some other wax or oil color pencil? Oh and I use titanium white gouache. works rather well.
@@Lachri I paint with acrylic but use oil based pencils to outline edges and add some fine details. Some of which might get painted over and then it’s all varnished. Is this archival?
Hello everyone. If someone can answer my question i would be so grateful. Im a pencil (graphite) artist and i will often use my eraser to make the white lighting pronounced. Id like to know if a white colored pencile can write over lead and make the white stand out even more?

Hi there, I'd like to know which 5 Luminance pencils you kept. I'm trying to build my collection. Thanks.

That ending was great, “did you draw that with your feet?”
That would be an interesting video 😆
My fave white is the Holbein soft white 501…..pure perfection!!👍🏼
Great evaluations and comparisons. Thank you. It's nice to see you and your husband have fun. God bless you both.
I love the derwent artist pencils on sanded paper and pastelmat, it barley shows on other surfaces. Comes out finer and brighter than polychromos!

White gouache is water based so it's not archival on top of oil/wax based pencils.
