With you being kind enough to include us colored pencil artists in this, I figured I'd supply my findings: Prismacolor and Chromaflow- It made me fall in love with these pencils again because it holds pigment deliciously. Bruynzeel Design- This is very saturated and works beautifully. Holbein- Absolutely terrible. It makes a gooey mess, which is unfortunate because these are some of my favorite pencils. Caran D'ache Luminance- Scratchy gross mess just barely better than Holbein. Again, one of my favorites normally. Faber Castell Polychromos- Right in the middle with slight streaking that can eventually be worked through, but the hardness chews at the velvet tooth. I hope this helps someone. ❤
According to Canson, their Velvet paper will be in retail stores mid November...can hardly wait. Thanks so much for including cp in your demo...I'm so tired of the inconsistencies in Pastelmat. Plus, no warping...fantastic...I'm totally sold!!!
It looks like it will be great for colored pencils as well 👍🏻. Honestly layer with colored pencil is pretty much the same as pastels, depending on which surface you are using, of course. But on PastelMat it’s the same since you can put light colors over dark. Using a light touch you can get more layers with colored pencil than with pastels. I’ve asked my local art supply store to keep an eye out for it and asked her to order me a pad when she can.
Great demo, thanks for sharing! I create with both mediums so it was nice to see how the new paper reacted with colored pencils as well. The colored pencil example looks better than what I get on CF pastelmat which needs a lot of layers before one sees a smooth finish. Look forward to trying the new paper as soon as it’s released in the US but like you, I have a lot CF pastelmat to use up as well. It’s truly a bummer with quality control issues with the pastelmat. Happy creating!
Thanks so much Jason. I’ve been frustrated by Pastelmat quality issues too. So glad you brought this alternative to our attention. I look forward to trying the Canson Velvet.
Many thanks as a coloured pencil artist I was very interested. Ive stopped using my "go to white Pastelmat board" because of all the flaws and slick areas that just wouldnt take layers, when using OMS it made a smudgy mess so will be interesting to see how this new surface works.
I would give you two thumbs if I could Jason, really looking forward to this paper. I think the stores are going to be hard pressed to fill the stock. Did you try the black gouache on it for dark areas?
I'm looking forward to Bonnie's review! I love to play with my pastels(I need a better workspace/storage for them)but have been enjoying colored pencils for many more years!
Thank you for this video. There we see again that one company having a monopol on something may not be the best. Some competition seems to be important.
I'm grateful for all the comparisons you've made regarding tools, paper, and pastels. Beginners might not fully understand how specific tools perform on different surfaces. I recently purchased three new Pastelmat pads and hope they are not defective, or at least minimally so. Thank you very much for taking the time to assist us.
the test is excellent, very useful, what I get as a result is very good, both of them, however, the pastel matte is brighter, only this one I find more light, shine🙂😊
Grazie per le spiegazioni chiare e molto utili! Il suo canale è uno dei due canali che seguo nonostante io non sappia l'inglese (uso i sottotitoli tradotti) perché ne vale la pena.🤗
Oh Wow! Thank you, your video is great, I was glued to the screen with each step you made😊 this really makes a difference. It's nice to have a choice in papers, now is the struggle of waiting for the stores to get their supplies😊 Thanks again and best wishes from the US❤😊
Thanks for this great review, Jason. Very detailed look at the two papers side-by-side. I'm definitely going to give it a try when it's available over here in the States--like everyone else, pretty tired of Pastelmat's quirks.
I have tested the black paper with a motif of a woman, maybe you have seen it Jason. The luminance is great and the black is really deep black. But the blending with the fingers is a little bit more difficult. Its seems in most things similiar than pastelmat, but not in the part of the blending. Hairbrushes and paper stombs are good for blending. But now I will test a motif with fur.
I use Pastelmat for pastels and colored pencils. Several cp artists and myself feel that the Cansón velvet was great for pastels but not for comparisons in eating and the colored pencils and not getting the brilliance and sharpness much like velvet paper but that the regular Canson mi Teintes or Pastelmat handles colored pencils so much better. So I prefer just to stick to Pastelmat to use both on them and even together but I certainly prefer not to use up my pencils and work harder to get the sharpness in quality of the painting on the Canson Velvet no way, not for me. Thank you!😊
Thank you Jason, this was very helpful! I’ve had the same issues with Pastelmat as well, so I’m looking forward to trying the Canson when it becomes available in the US.
Thank you so much for this comparison. Does Carson velvet had the big sheets as well with the size 50 x 70cm or only the blocks? Because the sheets are easy if you do some bigger work
It comes in 50cm x 65 cm sheets in all the 14 colours - or for really big projects it comes in a roll, 1m x 5m in each of the palest colours ( at the moment, may be introduced in that size in other colours if demand merits… )
As an L.A. native (lived here all of my 78 years), I'm loving your T-Shirt. 🥰 Can you tell me what that board is that you are using with magnets? Might save on a lot of tape. TIA
Hello Jason. A very informative video, on the paper comparisons. I have also had surface issues with pastelmat, so bought a couple of the pastel cards hoping to avoid the lines. It's much harder so do I apply sticks, pans and pencils in the same way, or will I encounter more problems? Thank you for your patience.
was your pastelmat paper ever rolled for storage or transport because I have used it a little bit, obviously not as much as you, but I have never noticed these lines on my paper and I sit extremely close to my paper.
@@wildlifeartjm thanks for taking the time to reply, very poor workmanship on the paper with its inconsistencies then. I just bought a couple pads of this new velvet paper and am eager to try it out, thanks for the review 😀
Wonder how it reacts to liquid. I think you once did a video of how other pastel paper had a bad reaction to liquids. Looks like the cover of the Canson says it can be used with wet media. Wonder if you add water or alcohol to blend in the pastels, would the surface lift off the paper?
The issue for me with PastelMat is the selection of colors. I'm stuck with lots of colors I don't like because that's all that was available. I have lots of this bright peachy color that I don't like.

Thank you Jason for the colored pencil info, think I’ll try it

Thank you Jason! Really want to look into this paper as soon as it comes to US
it will be out mid oct USA - keep watching my socials as I should be able to get a discount code for my followers :)
Thanks so much Jason. I’ve been frustrated by Pastelmat quality issues too. So glad you brought this alternative to our attention. I look forward to trying the Canson Velvet.
Happy to help!
I've found some canson velvet in the Netherlands. Excited to try!
Thanks! Looking forward to trying it with coloured pencils.
Hope you enjoy it!

not tried gouache yet but cant see any reason why it should not work

Excellent really, thank you for the demo.
My pleasure!
I love my very soft pastels in the darks by Terry Ludwig! Perfect for landscapes and animals! I'd like to try the new Canson velvet paper, too!
the test is excellent, very useful, what I get as a result is very good, both of them, however, the pastel matte is brighter, only this one I find more light, shine🙂😊
I cannot wait to get my hands on this paper to try!!!

agree ;o)
Great video Jason. Short, sweet & straight to the point. Looking forward to trying my pencils out on it too😁. Thanks so much🫠
Excellent video Jason! This could be a game changer.
many thanks
Great comparison.
thanks
Thank you! This was very informative and I can’t wait to try it out!💚
You are so welcome!
Thank you so much for your honest opinion about the Canson Mi-teintes Velvet, wow, I think Pastelmat have a good opponent!
I have tested the black paper with a motif of a woman, maybe you have seen it Jason. The luminance is great and the black is really deep black. Do you have a comparison between Mei Teines and Velvet?
I can't wait to try this new paper out for myself. The quality of pastelmat really has declined over the years.
agree
Thank you Jason, this was very helpful! I’ve had the same issues with Pastelmat as well, so I’m looking forward to trying the Canson when it becomes available in the US.

Very helpful thank you
You're welcome!
Thank you for you honest comparison i always enjoy your reviews. I wonder Jason just how many layers Canso Velvet compared to Pastelmat?
Roughly the same, difficult to tell exactly.
Thank you so much for this comparison. Does Carson velvet had the big sheets as well with the size 50 x 70cm or only the blocks? Because the sheets are easy if you do some bigger work

❤good❤❤❤ Thanks Jason.😊from Macau
Is Canson Velvet an embossed surface or an applied surface material like PastelMat?
Great comparison, thanks for all the info. I really hope Canson Velvet makes its way to Asia, Pastelmat's so cost-prohibitive.
I hope so too!
As an L.A. native (lived here all of my 78 years), I'm loving your T-Shirt. 🥰 Can you tell me what that board is that you are using with magnets? Might save on a lot of tape. TIA
if you search - magnetic whiteboard you will find many online and on amazon etc
@@wildlifeartjm Thank you. I did some research the other day and figured that's what you were using.
I will be testing a pastel card soon
Looks good but can’t find anywhere in Australia or rest of world to buy it!
Sold out in most places after my 1st video on it
Would this canson paper be good for colored pencils
See end of video
This is great! It seems very similar… the only thing is, is it me or the colors on the Velvet look ever so slightly dimmer, less vibrant?
was your pastelmat paper ever rolled for storage or transport because I have used it a little bit, obviously not as much as you, but I have never noticed these lines on my paper and I sit extremely close to my paper.
No it's from a pad / booklet. This fault is, seen quite often by my mamers too.
@@wildlifeartjm thanks for taking the time to reply, very poor workmanship on the paper with its inconsistencies then. I just bought a couple pads of this new velvet paper and am eager to try it out, thanks for the review 😀

Seems fine
It looks like this new Canson product is not available in the USA yet. Jason, might you have a link to where it can be purchased and shipped?
it will be out mid oct USA - keep watching my socials as I should be able to get a discount code for my followers :)
Still doesn’t seem to be available yet in US.
Does Canson velvet make larger sizes?
Yes
Having a very difficult time finding this online.
Stock coming soon
The issue for me with PastelMat is the selection of colors. I'm stuck with lots of colors I don't like because that's all that was available. I have lots of this bright peachy color that I don't like.
But we can’t get hold of it! No one is stocking in UK
It sold out after my video, as there were not many in stock. It's very new.
