Hi Jason! I take my SofftTool sponges off, and put them all in my hand, squirt Dawn dish soap onto them. add water and squeeze the soap into the tips over and over, sometimes adding more Dawn and water, and squeeze again until the colors are pretty much gone. I then air dry them on a paper towel. Works great and saves me money, too!!!!

Thank you Jason, some good tips here. I’d only challenge one thing and that’s buying loads of cheap plastic that you use a few times then throw to the landfill. Better to invest in the long lasting sponges and tips and wash them, for the planets sake (and therefore our sake too).

Thanks for the tips & tricks. One I learn during the last piece that I did, is that you can use the very tip of the finer point tools to apply thin lines or small spots of pastel. I used this trick to apply pastel I had lifted from a stick of Terry Ludwig eggplant to create pin point spots of shadow. The only professional pastelist that I have seen use brushes with pan pastels was painting on a velvet paper, rather than a sanded one. The surface looked like it held the pastel very well. I have been intending to try this and just haven’t gotten around to it yet.

Hey Jason..if you pluck the makeup sponge off you can slip it on the sofft knife to make a more comfortable handle...

Thanks Jason! I have washed with Dawn Liquid the tips from the "sof knives' but without much success. I have lost many this way, as the colours never seem to come out, but the sponges split and rot. So- I have a bunch of them I use, and sadly as they are expensive, I will continue to use and purchase, because I really love the pan pastel. The little cheap make up sponges seem OK, for small areas, but rather tiring on large areas. Thanks again for your tips!!

I have found a few similar like tools on ali express and temu and got some. They are not terrible, they do not release quite as well as the sofft tools but on practice pieces before I do my final copy they are great. The biggest issue is forcing myself not to go through every tip I have when I change colors. I feel like by the end they are all gray. I need to be a little more organized with how I use tools for sure. I do not like to use brushes at all. I have tried it and it just doesn't do what I want it to do.
