This is a great film about a great sport that is elegant, unique, and athletic. A sport, art, and science describe it perfectly. What I found surprising was the incredible speed. Lightning. Fencing is a unique combat sport as in that big muscles, even more than boxing, is a complete disadvantage. But they way the sport is today is more about points than practicing it as a form of self defense+ sport You can't say the same for boxing, or MMA. Which is still useful, in the way it's taught, for self defense + sport
Good vid....although there are a few technical inaccuracies. 1) The strip is 46 ft long, not 40 (it's actually 14 meters...45ft 11.2 in) by 6 ft 6.74 in (2 meters)...although I believe that's been recently changed to 1.5 meters (4 ft 11.1 in) 2) Double hits in epee are valid if they land within FOURTY milliseconds of each other, not one ms as the vid states. 3) Target area for sabre does NOT include the hands -- target stops at the wrist bones. The rest of it is superb.
@@liamjames9532 I believe they're standardizing to 1.5 now. Even, so, the only place I ever see a 2 meter strip in the US are the semi and finals strips at national events. All the other strips are 1.5.
Great documentary I got into fencing and judo at school, both sports have similar attributes and have helped me with life, main skill I learnt from both is how to read people.
Fencing has absolutely helped me put myself into perspective. I like both epee and sabre, calculated and impulsive, and im trying to find places to use those as strengths both on and off the piste.
I would have liked to have seen actors Jerry O'Connell and Greta Gerwig interviewed. Greta (foil) spoke about fencing in 2014 after Frances Ha came out with David Letterman and Vanity Fair. I don't believe Greta fenced after high school, but Jerry fenced saber at NYU. 🎭
During the time of my training and competition era in fencing I have to say it was the best time of my life . I'm a USFA certified coach but presently not active . This film has moved me . Well done . And thank you .
To answer a question here : why are the swords so bendy ? Some of the blades you can purchase are very flexible the others are not . Usually a fencer with a very flexible weapon Is a fan of the "flick". It's a move that is best done with a flexible blade .
Check community centers. I offer a free fencing class once a week. The center itself does charge people about 12 bucks a month which covers liability insurance and building maintenance.
@@WaybackFencingClub I really really appreciate the offer, but i live in a third world country(Philippines) and the concept of community centers is something i still have no idea of even until now. They probably don't exist here. The only way i could have fencing classes are through clubs, which charge hundreds of dollars probably I've given up dreaming about learning fencing as a broke 19 year old taking care of fam. Bless your soul for teaching such classes free.

I always wanted to try fencing, it looks like a real life fighting game (to be clear I mean like street fighter Tekken and smash none of that sifu beat em up garbage(jk sifu looks cool just not a real fighting game))

Because they don't want people to die. It also means it has very little value in any real combat scenario. People who hype it up as an actual combat sport where you're trying to kill each other are full of it. Sabre techniques in particular are totally absurd, and essentially you hit with the flat of the blade and other nonsense that would only work if they were bendy lightsabers. Fencing is a sport like boxing with a lot of rules and safety equipment. People who want to actually fight unarmed do MMA. People who want to actually fight with swords do HEMA. Fencing is for people who like counting coup, basically. It's derived from formalized dueling rules specifically meant to avoid deaths, where the duel is over at first blood.
@@fakecubed HEMA swords are not bendy, Kendo shinai are not bendy. I believe nobody died yet. Although deadly sports injuries are not unheard of in soccer or athletics for example. As for the rest of what you said - I completely agree ;)

If it is more flexible, is easy to flick, but at the same time, you loose control in parry. Each fencer must choose.
