      db2664 I doubt that he would have accepted the job, as this sort of public shindig really wasn’t Deans thing. Most of his friends knew that he was at heart a much more quiet and private man, and not the party animal that his carefully-nurtured public image presented. As Johnny said in his introduction, Dean hadn’t even attended the event for 13 years, and Don Rickles once described him at the Roast they did for him; “ You won’t see Dean at many public events, he is not a crowd-waver. But everyone in the industry loves to be in his company.... Ladies and gentlemen, a man who is loved, Dean Martin” I don’t know how they persuaded him to attend this particular event, but I strongly suspect that Dean really just wanted to get out of there and go home to watch one of his beloved westerns on the TV.

    @rogerwilco4397 9 років тому +31

    Dean was nutty and funny as usual. There's a reason he didn't even attend the Oscars for 13 years...especially when in 1966 he was a REALLY big movie star... he DIDN'T CARE.
    Check out his great dramatic performances; "Toys In the Attic", "Rio Bravo", "Mr. Ricco", "Bells Are Ringing", "Ada". This "joke of an actor' was paired with the likes of Judy Holliday, Susan Hayward, John Wayne, etc. He earned his chops. This drunk stuff was an act.
    Dean was very, very good when he wanted to be. He just didn't give a fuck what you thought.

    • @db2664
      @db2664 9 років тому +8

      Roger Wilko Very true ! Dean had already proven himself as a fine actor in addition to the films you mentioned add his roles in "The Young Lions", "Some Came Running", "Airport" and "The Sons of Katie Elder" just to mention a few more. It did bother him that he never got the recognition from the "film critics" for his acting however.

    • @rogerwilco4397
      @rogerwilco4397 9 років тому +11

      db2664 I think you are right on this one. Dean put up a good act of not caring - and I think this was true most of the time because he kept things in perspective - but he slowed down making a lot serious films when he didn't get the recognition he deserved. He was so popular as the laid back playboy on screen and as Matt Helm, that he probably figured he'd give the public what they wanted to see. Still, he tried to retain his dramatic status in later movies, like the ones you mentioned and also in "Showdown" with Rock Hudson and his final major dramatic role, "Mr. Ricco" in 1975.
      Dean was terrific.

    • @db-pi2jf
      @db-pi2jf 9 років тому +4

      Roger Wilko Yes, if only he continued doing it. It was a big disappointment to a young Dino fan like me that he gave up his film career after "Mr. Ricco" He could have made more movies if he wanted to - MGM had him signed for 2 more films but he chose not to pursue them. I often wondered why he gave up ?

    • @lindashelley3635
      @lindashelley3635 7 років тому +11

      Roger Wilco I always felt that Dean cared a lot more than he let on. At heart he was a very quiet insular man, but when he split with Jerry he created a public persona of a devil-may-care playboy which worked well for him with his audience. But those who worked with him on his films always said that he was very professional, always being on set on time and knowing his lines, being easy to work with and never being a prima donna. For a man who had been primarily known as a crooner who liked booze and women it says a lot that Dean earned the respect of professional actors, especially in his more dramatic roles. It's just a shame his acting talent wasn't more widely recognised in the industry by those who couldn't see beyond his lightweight image.

    I wasn't aware that Raquel Welch presented this award to Giorgio Moroder. And how about that line-up of nominees? Jerry Goldsmith, Ennio Morricone, Dave Grusin, John Williams and Giorgio Moroder--you're talking about five of the greatest, four of them Oscar winners in this category, the fifth (Morricone) a lifetime achievement Oscar winner. I've seen all the movies nominated--all very strong films, and I'm particularly fond of the score for "Heaven Can Wait", and of course "Superman", but there's no doubt about it, Giorgio Moroder deserved this one. For an explanation as to why, see my post below. And doesn't life work in strange ways? An American traveller attempts to smuggle four pounds of hashish out of Turkey, and it culminates in Giorgio Moroder smooching Raquel Welch on stage at the Academy Awards. Only in America.

    Raquel Welch and Dean Martin had previously co-starred with James Stewart in the western film Bandolero ten years earlier[ I presume by the nominees that this Oscar ceremony was from 1978 ]. Martin had essentially retired from movies, although he made extended cameos in the Cannonball Run films in the early 80s.

      andrea rossi Let’s just say that the phrase ‘to score’ with a girl had a very different meaning at that time - and Dean, of course, always had a reputation as a ‘ladies man’... In other words, it’s a humorous play on two very different meanings of the word, which is something Dean often used in his comedy😉. I’m guessing that men today would use a very different (and probably much coarser) expression.

    Good Afternoon, my name is Mark A. Elijio. As a great fan of Raquel Welch who has done a lot of work on screen
    as well as television, stage, music and more...she was more than just a great actress but a perfectionist who gets it
    done just right. Now she's gone alright. And I've been a big fan of hers because she's sexy, smart, funny, calm, and cool.
    It's extraordinary to work with everyone in many ways and understand what it's like to be an actress.
    She has been in this industry from 1958 until 2018.
    What a damn beautiful lady she was. Sadly she died at aged 82 in Los Angeles, California
    and survived by her children.
    Oh, Damn! I'm so sorry. I'm gonna cry all my life 'cause we lost a great star like Raquel Welch and without
    the stuff we can't enjoy over the years with her ever again. It's gonna be hard for everyone to
    understand why and feel what it's like in the real world. Because everybody really cares. Just Like Me.
    Perfectly. For Raquel Welch, thanks for everything. You're very lovely, you're very kind. I'm gonna miss you,

      +gutz1981 no way, Williams' score sounds a LOT like the Star Wars one...Moroder or Morricone were the two deserving ones that year

    • @ronaldh8446
      @ronaldh8446 6 років тому

      Yeah, but... Williams can win for just about every score he creates. Everyone knows he's the best in film history anyway.

    • @scifinerd17
      @scifinerd17 6 років тому

      Ronald H Other composers have achieved a lot in film scoring as well, if Williams won all the time it wouldn’t be fair to any of the other composers who’ve made scores just as good as the ones he did. It has to be a fair competition. John Williams already won five Academy Awards and the ones he did win for are the ones that are the most deserving, I mean if I had to choose between Star Wars or Superman as to which one he should’ve won for, it’d be Star Wars since it’s one of his very best ones. I’m glad he won those awards, but like I said it the Academy has to be fair and give other composers recognition too.

    I felt sarcasm in Dean Martin's comment and I realy doesn't appreciate that! Giorgio is great, he's the father of disco' and eletronic music and deserves much more respect, that's why he won 3 Oscars and Grammys! He came to Brazil last Saturday, full house, a success! Congratulations, Giorgio!!!

      Denys Camargo Oh dear, Dean’s joke really went right over your head didn’t it? Or perhaps the phrase to ‘score’ with a girl is too old-fashioned now - maybe today’s young men use a different expression? But if you’ve ever seen Deans show you must be aware that innuendo was often part of his comedy. And certainly this audience was way ahead of him, they started laughing before he even said a word - they could tell by the twinkle in his eyes exactly what he was thinking!!😉
