I watched an interview from 1987 and then watched this one to compare. His son’s death really took his soul from him. It’s sad to see the difference in just 3 years. He talked slower, made fewer jokes, wasn’t as quick on his feet. Some may say it’s age, but he was 70. That age is really nothing. RIP Dino.🖤
I am sure it did. I loved to watch this sweet funny man who wore his heart on his sleeve. Also his sense of humor honest and hilarious. So much talent in one man. ❤️🙏
Is was and always will be forever in my heart as he was is and always be along with frank and Sammy, the greatest to ever grace this earth...i miss him terribly👆
Dean was the best straight man who has ever lived. I understand his need to break away from Jerry. It got where it had lost its luster. He had a great career on his own. When he said he carried Montgomery, it really makes you realize just what a kind, and great human being he was. The rumors are true.
@@akrenwinkle I really liked him as well, and you're probably right. He was truly a great straight man. To be honest, I really enjoyed Abbott, and Costello more as a child growing up.
he says here that, as the straight man, he just had to repeat what jerry said, but watch any Colgate comedy hour and you'll dean helped jerry remember his lines as much as jerry helped him. their chemistry was like no other.
Stephanie Santos And, in the beginning at least, they so obviously really loved working together, and had a lot of fun in the shows. I think the breakup of the act would have been inevitable sooner or later as they grew older and public tastes changed, but what's really a pity is that they couldn't have maintained their close friendship afterwards. Then maybe they could have done the occasional 'special', or Jerry could have sometimes appeared on Deans TV show...
They saw each other more than people knew, especially to begin with. Check footage of the opening of the Cocoanut Grove 1961 that briefly shows them. Jerry and wife Patti got on very well with Dean's wife Betty and when he left her to marry Jeanne it caused some friction. She admitted she was jealous of Jerry and her husband and was keen for Dean to go it alone. Even Sinatra said he wouldn't mess with Jeanne. Jerry and Dean had supposedly agreed to do a film together in the 80's, but for some reason it never got off the ground. One thing for sure, their chemistry was very special. Jerry said the love and affection between them was so strong, his eyes would fill with tears when Dean walked in the room. Their bond was as clear as day. There's been no act like it since.
DeanMartin was one of the best! That TV show for me was the greatest thing in variety tlevision. He had everyone on that show! It was always so spontaneously funny too. I have seen collections of the show - but not actual full shows.
I think Dean is mostly talking about Paramount when he says he was playing the 'heavy.' Jerry and him had wonderful chemistry on the Colgate Comedy Hour and when they preformed at the Copacabana Dean made a lot of the jokes. Notice how he never blames Jerry for the split here either? He just says that he was being cast as the strait man too much, which was mostly Hal B. Wallis fault for demanding that they use the same formula over and over again. Dean wanted more screen time and more lines and personality, Jerry wanted more creative control and a chance to show what he could do in the movie making behind a camera rather than just in front of one. In the end they both got what they wanted. But the loss of their unique and wonderful relationship is such a tragedy. They did see each other and talk to each after the split, but it was clear they would never be a comedy team again. It is interesting to note that in the 80's and 90's they both had expressed interest and willingness to do another movie together along with Frank Sinatra and Jimmy Stewart. But plans for that fell through with Deans death in 95.
Martin Lewis I think you are right. When you watch clips of them onstage, or even on TV (although that was obviously to a tighter schedule), there was a lot of ad libbing that went on, and the humour and laughter that came out of that was a huge part of the fun and popularity of the act. But obviously when they made films they had to stick to a script and to a large extent that was a whole different ballgame, and I feel that losing that wonderful spontaneity that they had onstage was the start of the problems between them.
+Linda Shelley ... you're right I heard Dean said in a interview not to long ago that I watch "that when Jerry and him was on stage they played to each other not the audience. It was that playing off what each other was doing that might be scripted or most cases not that made them so much fun to watch. I just glad they both was able to do work that bought them joy. Also that they was on talking terms before Dean die. known just that much bring a smile to my face
Wow thats amazing!!! I had no idea that they expressed interest in working together again in the 80s/90s. That would've been amazing. How did you hear about this??
Dean seemed to do very few interviews. This is the first time I have ever seen him when he was fairly serious. This was only 3 years before his son died and he pretty much retired from show business. I assume from this interview that at the time he was still performing in Las Vegas. I am not sure when his health started failing, probably after his son died. He was on a tour with Frank and Sammy Davis, which he quit part way through due to health reasons. What a shame that the last few years of his life were so sad.
sanford sklansky I think Deans health problems were only part of the story. Frank persuaded him to go on that tour just a few months after Dean Paul was killed while Dean was still grieving and in no mood to go out partying after the shows as Frank and Sammy wanted to do. The story goes that Frank got annoyed with him and threw a plate of spaghetti over his head. Well, that was it as far as Dean was concerned, and he left the tour the very next morning.
Don't forget his seven children. I know the death of his son in 87 during a jet fighter crash had a big impact on Dean. Some said he was never the same.
I think Dean Martin was the greatest entertainer alive issue was a wonderful dancer singer and performer there are no more entertainers like old thing today it was a real Ladies Man you should be more people like
He like Frank got to work with Monty Clift ...He made them much better actors than they could have ever imagined! Frank gave Montgomery a lot of credit for his Oscar.
He never really recovered after his son was killed when his F-4 Phantom crashed into a mountain in California. He, Dean and Liza Minnelli were touring in the 1980s and he had to leave. He was in such emotional pain
Matt Williams Actually that last 'Together Again' tour was originally Dean, Frank and Sammy. Liza was brought in to replace Dean when he pulled out after just a few shows.
Of course once Dean died, Jerry set about revising history. Jerry claimed that he ended their partnership -- and Jerry tried to make it sound as if he was doing Dean a favor. But in every interview given by Dean he said that he, and not Jerry, ended it.
I feel so sad after watching this interview. Jerry Lewis always needed and wanted Dean Martin to say how he loved Jerry. I don’t think that ever happened. Yet, Dean Martin expressed how much he loved Monty Clift during the shooting of Young Lions. I wonder why? Did Dean Martin ever miss Jerry? Did Dean value his time with Jerry?
sophie75 Dean loved Jerry. If you look for the videos of Jerry surprising Dean on his 72nd bday, at least one or two should include the part where Dean said, “You surprised me-I mean it. I love you.” As well as the part where Dean said, “I gotta kiss ya on the lips!” [they kiss] Jerry: “You busy later?” Dean (laughing and posing): “Yes, I am” lol
OMG, my game I'd of loved to play him..he banked that ball so good what fun it would of been...id of used my old line if ya beat me ya beat the best.. Connie
Elvis flopped when he first came to Vegas and Dean, Frank and Sammy were big stars in Vegas in 56. Sammy with his uncle and father and Dean with Jerry. Frank was a big attraction in Vegas and eventually become the biggest attraction with the rat pack. Elvis would eventually make it big in Vegas.

How can you not love dean Martin? He was pure class and a very decent man,RIP.
He funded Zionist terrorism.
Dean was the best of them all.
Dean's compassion towards Monty clift makes me cry
Everyone I've ever met here in Las Vegas that met Dean said he was the nicest guy.
@James Henderson are you one of thoose herpa derps "muh Israel!!" people ??
Elvis helped Las Vegas make so much more money than any entertainer.
Dean was good but Elvis was no. 1 attraction ever with Vegas

I believe that’s what killed him a broken heart he was a great talent

God bless you.

The celebrities of today could sure take a lesson in class from the stars of this time period.
Wonderful 💗 67 here, ridiculously handsome 😉😍
So talented and underrated. Not easy to make things look so easy. Brilliant.

Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis what a great comedy team. Sadly missed thanks for all the laughs
Dean's the best.pure class
Like Harry Ramsdens Fish And Chips The Best
He funded the murder of women and children in Palestine.
A very talented man and he never knew how much talent he had. He was always ON. Love him as a child. That voice like velvet. ❤️
Randi Oakes was gorgeous. Underrated babe back then for sure.
The girl is virtually drooling 😪
The ultimate entertainer
What a Good Man He Had Everyone Fooled about the Drinking lol
I really enjoyed this interview! Way to go Deano and Randi!
Dean's sketches and roasts, world's best straight man!!
Philip Clock And also a really funny comedian in his own right. A great ad libber, as you will see if you watch any of his Variety shows or Roasts.
I love Dean martin. He was so romantic to me.
The best Italian voice of all time....Dino....
With his constant chain smoking it's amazing he lived as long as he did. The body having to constantly get rid of the toxins in the smoke.
Great voice! Loved him..

Dean had his own, more nuanced type of humour that was pretty much steamrollered by Jerry Lewis.
I believe Bud Abbott was the best straight man who ever existed, and that Dean wasn't a straight man, really. He was as funny as Jerry. No... funnier.
@@akrenwinkle I really liked him as well, and you're probably right. He was truly a great straight man. To be honest, I really enjoyed Abbott, and Costello more as a child growing up.

Dean was also known in the business for remembering everyone's lines in the movies that was just him.
I know everything changes, but I wish 'The Sands' wouldnt have been torn down.
