Louis was born and raised in New Orleans into an Italian family. His backstory is fascinating!! If you’ve seen Disney’s Jungle Book, then you know King Louis - Louis Prima!!!
"Jump, Jive and Wail" "Just a Giggolo" and "Angelina" are some of my favorite Louis Prima songs. You should also check out the other two Louis', Louis Jordan and Louis Armstrong!
I'm sure someone will mention it, but Louis Prima voiced the orangutan King Louis in Disney's "Jungle Book" animated movie. He was such a phenomenal talent and a jazz legend! He is of Italian and Sicilian descent, so you were right about that vibe, Amber. But he was from New Orleans and his music was very much rooted in the New Orleans jazz style.
Louis Prima's brand of jumpin jive is totally infectious. You can hear the Stachmo and Cab Calloway influences with a heavy helping of pasta. Nice choice.
Oh my goodness I remember Louis Prima and Keely Smith who he made his wife appearing on the Ed Sullivan show multiple times! Keely Smith had an unbelievable voice, she was a straight face and he was a comedian although he was also the musician an orchestra leader. What good memories
Louie Prima.....one of the Italian icons from the old crooner eta. There has not been a true "Goomba" wedding or party, including my own special day, without this song played!! 🇮🇹
PRIMA! My favourite by him is ‘Five Months, Two Weeks, Two Days’ - one of my faves by anyone, actually. Also love ‘Jump, Jive, and Wail’, and ‘Beep, Beep!’.
Not only was he a great musician and singer, but if you've ever seen Disney's 1967 animated movie The Jungle Book, he played King Louis, king of the orangutans! He sang the classic song, "I Wanna Be Like You". However, the original version of this song came in 1936, sung by Bing Crosby and the Georgie Stoll Orchestra. Tony Bennett (PLEASE do a Tony song!) also did a version.
My dad loved Louis! He played him all the time. I lost my dad to cancer a few years ago i miss him very much. Hearing this song, and that it has become popular makes my heart sing with memories. It's tough this time of year without him.
Louis Prima is one of the GOATs of big band music. I love this one and Jump Jive and Wail, That Old Black Magic, I’m Just. Giggolo/I Ain’t Got Nobody(David Lee Roth of Van Halen did a remake of this one), I Wanna Be Just Like You from Jungle Book.
Great reaction guys. Louis is all energy and originality. Notice how his sound is in the style of Louis Armstrong, as both are from New Orleans and are into jazz, scatting and horns. Love Mr Prima because of his original sound. Could we have more please? Cheers from Canada
Louis Prima, Keeley Smith, Sam Butera and the Witnesses is a fantastic rabbit hole to go down. You must watch their clips on UA-cam for the full effect. It was a stage show. These guys practically owned Las Vegas in the 50s and 60s.
This is a great place to start. I started with this disc and wore it out in the mid 90s. But I then found find the Capitol years box set which had all those songs and so much more. It was all good stuff. He became one of my all time favorite artists.
Now we're talkin!! Louis Prima is tops! His group and sound is sometimes referred to as "The Wildest." They were also amazing live! Sam Butera is the saxophonist and this was recorded with the witnesses. One of the tightest rhythm sections in the business! The horn section consists of Sax, Trumpet & Trombone. That cool part he was doing with the sax player was called a call and response. You may also be familiar with Mr. Prima as he was the voice of King Louie from the animated Disney movie "The Jungle Book." One of my all time favorite artists!
Louis also did 'Just A Gigolo', covered decades later by David Lee Roth, and sang King Louis' 'I Wanna Be Like You' in Disney's animated 'Jungle Book'.
YAY, Louis Prima!!! I grew up with him, too - listening to his album 'The Wildest'! He had the hottest late night Las Vegas act in the 50's. Listening to Louis Prima, Keely Smith, and Sam Butera and the Witnesses, you get to be a part of the fun they were having, and yet they also felt as comfortable as family. And OMG, such phenomenal music!
That voice (Louis Prima) was the “give me the secret of man’s red fire” voice in Disney’s original ‘Jungle Book’. Prima and his band, especially his sax player Sam Butera, were precursors of what would become Rock & Roll . . . but the real secret weapon for Louis Prima was Keely Smith. She came out of the audience in a club one night to sing with him and they were eventually married - when you do your ‘female Friday’ you’ll be knocked on your butts by one of the most stunning female voices ever. She was special, and here’s the first clip you need to listen to ~ ua-cam.com/video/VyDNu6AnENY/v-deo.html
Louis Prima! Yes! I wish I had recommended Louis ... the thing is, you really need to see their live performances. Find :That Old Black Magic" or "I've Got You Under My Skin". BTW, Louis' sax player, Sam Butera, was one of the all time greats, and half responsible for their over-the-top vibe. You can't miss with Louis Prima!
i may be really wrong here... but my aging memory recalls that in the early, wild days of Las Vegas, he and his band, plus very young wife Keely Smith were a constant presence and headliner in the Nightclubs. If you think about his music from that standpoint, it sounds perfect! The sax player is Sam Butera, a legend himself!! Their band was called The Witnesses. Lots of call and response in their act. Beautiful stuff.
Louis was the speaking and singing voice of King Louis the orangutan in Disney's 1967 animated "The Jungle Book". To this day I still love to hear him sing "I Wanna Be Like You" 😍.
SO excited you guys reacted to Louis Prima. I hope you explore more. Watch something live with Sam Butera and Keely Smith, like "Baby Won't You Please Come Home." Their chemistry is so fun to watch. I love his music. It makes me so happy. :)
You HAVE to watch some Louis Prima / Kelly Smith live performances. Keely had the most amazingly beautiful presence and such a strong voice. Put together with a wicked sense of humour.
Yeah! Someone finally reacting to Louis Prima!! A crazy man! You have to find one of his live performances. Many times his wife (I'm pretty sure, lol) is in the act and is worth watching! Oh he's one cool cat!! Cool scat and lots of horns! Hear Cab Calloway in there???
Louie also played trumpet with his band, which included Sam Butera on the sax as you heard in this song. Like other commenters, I suggest you feature "That Old Black Magic" with his wife at the time, Keely Smith. They give off a Sonny and Cher vibe as she sings with a deadpan expression as if she's annoyed by him; so, it would be best if you watch them sing it on video. Plus, he was often a wild man on stage (in the best way) and is just really fun to watch.
Great song! That energy, fun, and musicianship are all signatures of Louis Prima’s style. He was very popular in the 1930s, 40s, 50s, and 60s. Also try Jump Jive and Wail, Sing Sing Sing, That Old Black Magic, Beep Beep!, Hey Boy Hey Girl, I Wanna Be Like You, Angelina Zooma Zooma, Banana Split for My Baby, 5 Months 2 Weeks…, Oh Marie, Just a Gigalo/I Ain’t Got Nobody, and more! Prima is definitely someone you would enjoy every time!
3:48 my favorite thing about Louis Prima is how much fun he has with the players in the band. Like he makes up lyrics and skat just to mess with them🤣😂 Always puts a smile on my face!
Louis Prima is always dynamite. He was before my time as a youth and I've only discovered him since the pandemic kicked in hard, but he seems always to bring it.
For Female Friday: Ronnie Spector - ‘Be My Baby’ Bette Midler - ‘From a Distance’ Toni Braxton - ‘Un-Break My Heart’ Roberta Flack - ‘First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ Other notables: Christopher Cross - ‘Sailing,’ Kayne Brown - ‘Worship You,’ Kool and The Gang - ‘Celebration,’ Dan Fogelberg - ‘Same Old Lang Syne’ Luther Vandross - ‘Dance With My Father’
Fantastic voice and a rockstar of his era. He took jazz and helped usher in the world of swing. My uncle carmen had the same type voice🇺🇸🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🤘❤️thats louis on the trumpet. I named my daughter angelina, his song angelina zooma zooma
OMG … love that you reacted to Louis Prima! He was one my Dad’s favorite artists. Yes, Louis Prima was kind of more like a 20’s band leader, so where he went, the band went LOL
I love Louis Prima. He's another great Italian singer, along with Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Dean Martin, and Perry Como. Frankie Vallie and on and on. I don't know why, but Italians seem to have cornered the market on great singers from the 1940s through the 70s. Most are dead now, but Tony Bennett, is still alive and singing at age 93 I think. Louis Prima has some songs on video from the 1950s, with his lady partner "Keely Smith," and they are a hoot together! Find the song/video called "I'm just a Gigolo," when you see these two performers together on stage, you can't stop smiling. Louis Prima and Keely Smith were a team for many years.
I never seen Louis Prima but I did see Louis Prima Jr couple of years back and believe me that guy had a great show I'm sure he did everything his dad did ... if his dad was as good as Junior.. which I'm sure he was.. holy smoke it was a fun fun show
I'm Italian, So King Louie, from Disneys "JungleBook" was played in our house ALOT! Louie wrote the huge hit "Sing Sing Sing" with a Swing! which everyone knows as soon as ya hear it. He worked with Benny Goodman...You"ll Love 'ANGELINA'...& "AMERICANO" I have his vinyls, he sang with Keely Smith. Hes a legend!
Oh,you have to find video of this band playing on TV… his Saxophone player, Sam Butera, did all his arrangements and Louie Prima played trumpet… His act was a blast… I saw Sam in New Orleans in the 90’s after Louie had passed and he was doing the whole Prima act.. it was terrific.
In the late 50s early 60s Louis Prima and Keely Smith played in a lounge the late night early morning. All the entertainers would finish their shows and go watch them. They were the show to see. This song was probably recorded live in Vegas. He started in the 40s. Louis is playing the trumpet. He liked to do scats with his sax player.
Louis Prima plays the trumpet and was a band leader. The horns are always there. He has some great songs, I Wanna Be Like You, Just a Gigolo, Sing Sing Sing. His duets with Keely Smith are legendary (her voice is amazing). He's a clown and she is fake cold as ice on the stage, it's very fun.
My parents stayed at The Sands & saw them & The Ratpack. Still have a beautiful ashtray with the big "S" logo. Being as how our last name began with s my old man stole like 7 of them.
I have been in love with this man's voice since I first heard him as a child when I watched the original Jungle Book movie and he did the voice and singing for King Louie.
Yet again, “well another one they will love” as soon as I read the thumbnail. I love that their tastes are so varied, since it reminds me that I have been exposed to a number of genres over the years.
There is DVD on Louis Prima, I think the name is Louis Prima - The Wildest. Very Good! It has interviews with his wives, children, and the band members and details his whole life. I used to take care of a man, Frankie, and we had to watch it every day, His daughter gave me a copy when he died. I haven’t watched in a while, now I have to go dig it out. The band was Sam Betera - sax, and his band, The Witnesses. They stayed together with Louis until the end. His wife, Keely Smith had an amazing voice. Sadly, she passed away a few years ago. Look for an interview she did with Raymond Arroyo a few years before she died.
Louis was born and raised in New Orleans into an Italian family. His backstory is fascinating!! If you’ve seen Disney’s Jungle Book, then you know King Louis - Louis Prima!!!
Jungle Book is such a good movie. Baloo is my favorite character.
@@wendyhodges7172 yep and of course the same voice actor does Little John in Robin Hood
@@Bobby4USN I did not know that. I love reading comments because I learn something new and interesting all the time. 😀
@@Bobby4USN The voice of Baloo was Phil Harris
@@susanwhitney2576 yep, he was such a funny guy
My favorite by Louis is “Old Black Magic” the duet he does with Keely Smith is fantastic
Absolutely! Watching his schtick while performing and Keely's nearly opposite style is delightful.
Amber girl , love the tee shirt , he sang in the jungle book ! Disney , waiting to hear him scat ! Awesome ! 😍😍
Yes you have to watch him perform, and with Keely. She was a great singer and they were a great team.

Yup _ gotta love them ...... just sayin' .....
My favorite Louie Proma song is Just a Gigolo. I didn't find his version until I heard David Lee Roth's cover that was a big hit
Combined with I Ain't Got Nobody! The call and response section with his backup band "The Witnesses" is fabulous.
I'm kind of in the same boat.
I love "Jump, Jive and Wail" but heard the Brian Setzer Orchestra version first 😎.
They should definitely hear David Lee Roth's version. His cover of "That's Life" is great, too.
First time I heard Just a Gigolo/I Aien't Got Nobody was from The Village People.
You'll also love "That Old Black Magic" that he sings with his wife, Keely Smith. And yes, King Louie the ape from Disney's Jungle Book, so much fun.
Louis Prima is the originator of “Jump, Jive, and Wail”, which has been covered by Brian Setzer Orchestra. A must hear.
His style of music was what we call Jump Blues. A little jazz, a little swing and it is leaning into early rock and roll and bee bop.
Louis Prima's brand of jumpin jive is totally infectious. You can hear the Stachmo and Cab Calloway influences with a heavy helping of pasta. Nice choice.
Was just thinking it was a cross of those 2 men. Adding the pasta is a nice touch.
Perfect pasta twist. 🎯 So good!🔥🤙
🤌
Just A Giggolo or Jump Jive and Wail - LOTS of great songs fromLouis!
YOU HAVE TO FIND A VIDEO OF HIM DOING ANY SONG…he’s a total hoot, dances around like a crazy man
My daddy, born in NOLA, introduced me to Louis Prima at a very young age and I still listen to and love him. THE WILDEST!
Louie Prima a great Italian American singer, has that Louie Armstrong sound, a jazz singer. Glad he included ravioli in it. He is a fun singet.
PRIMA! My favourite by him is ‘Five Months, Two Weeks, Two Days’ - one of my faves by anyone, actually. Also love ‘Jump, Jive, and Wail’, and ‘Beep, Beep!’.
Louis was backed by Sam Butera and the Witnesses. His best work was live along side Keely Smith...Epic stage work
Sam Butera was soo good!
Mighty Sam!
Sam could sing too!
Love Louis! Listen to him do That Old Black Magic with his wife, Keely Smith. She has a terrific voice!
And that deadpan expression fits perfectly with his hyperactivity!!!!
Love Louis Prima! Saw a movie called “Big Night” years ago and fell in love with the music. This is right up Amber’s alley - glorious horns!!! ❤️❤️❤️
As soon as I heard his voice I thought King Louie
My dad loved Louis! He played him all the time. I lost my dad to cancer a few years ago i miss him very much. Hearing this song, and that it has become popular makes my heart sing with memories. It's tough this time of year without him.
Louis is one of my all time favorites! You've hit a gold mine of music if you start listening to all of his hits!
His live performances were REALLY entertaining...a lot of fun!
The MIGHTY SAM BUTERA on tenor sax!
For Christmas, listen to Louis Prima's "What Will Santa Claus Say? (When He Finds Everybody Swingin')" & "Shake Hands With Santa Claus"!
Great trumpet player
Louis was born and raised in New Orleans in an Italian family. His backstory is fascinating!!
Every time I'm near Metarie Cemetery, I stop by to visit his mausoleum & pay my respects.
It's lovely to see you both smiling! Definitely catch a live video of Louis Prima,- his stage act is raucous!
Louis Prima is amazing listen to many more songs that he does you'll enjoy every single one of them
The first time I ever heard this in Elf, I thought it was saying Panties From Heaven 😂😂
Louie Prima does the voice of King Louie from the old Disney cartoon 'Jungle Book"
He has lots of great songs!
Here's one of the classic voices. I love this bass line. He was so upbeat and this is jive music. New Orleans music! Love it!
Great reaction guys. Louis is all energy and originality. Notice how his sound is in the style of Louis Armstrong, as both are from New Orleans and are into jazz, scatting and horns. Love Mr Prima because of his original sound. Could we have more please? Cheers from Canada
It was in ELF. But it was introduced by Bing Crosby with Georgie Stoll and his orchestra in the 1936 film Pennies From Heaven.
Yeah, it's waaaaaay older than Elf. LOL!!!!!!!
Here's the link to Bing's version: ua-cam.com/video/_IFgC7JhVrM/v-deo.html
There is also a Danny Kaye movie by the same name where he performs with Louis Armstrong.

You've got to hear Louis Prima (and company) do "That Old Black Magic" with his wife Keely Smith! Live version of course...so you can see his antics.
You'll love his Greatest Hits CD it has 28 songs and everyone of them are great especially when his wife , Kelly sings .
