Keely Smith to me was this drop dead gorgeous vocalist who knew what she looked like and played it so understated and disinterested and it drove people nuts. She had stunning vocal chops too, which didn’t hurt. The perfect foil to Louis Prima.
I was phenomenally lucky enough to see Keely live on Saturday June 1st, 2002, at Bimbo's nightclub in San Francisco. One of the best shows I've ever attended. She sang her heart out for an hour and a half plus and did a bunch of classics from the Louis and Keely days as well as her pop hits. People got up and danced! She must've been around 73 or 74 but she looked fantastic and sounded almost exactly as she did in her 30s. She had an incredibly durable set of pipes! That black magic called love... If you don't follow the sense of this devilish rhythm even with just one foot, you are dead. Art, grace, coordination, brilliance ... Such beautiful Keely Smith and Lou Prima´s voices! And how fascinating and fun, at the same time, the performance they always performed! Watching them singing together is like when you enjoy the movie "Singin´ in the Rain": make you smile and bright the sun in your day :-)
Kookie Keeley and crazy Louis... they were perfection in this song! I've loved this song since I was a child and have never been a fan of 50's music, but this was SPECIAL!
Just becoming aware of Keely Smith and her work. Her voice is incredible, and she's gorgeous. She always looks great on stage and I think that bob haircut was invented for her. Louis isn't too shabby either.
Thank you for the footage of Keely Smith and Louie Prima from 1959 in "living color" on NBC-TV (I'm guessing it's from The Plymouth Show with Steve Allen). Yes, those two made a great pair making great music together. Love to hear them do That Ole Black Magic. From a time we'll never see again.
Louis had a wonderful quality to his unique voice. He knew how to use that gift. Keely was the 'straight man' to his creative use of vocals. Wonderful couple. The guys were great musicians in their own right, having to play gig after gig. They loved what they did and it shows. Could not ask for a better evening out being entertained by them. In those days, a musician had to be able to read and write music not just interpret by ear. Over the years I've come to realize that 99% percent of the general pop music celebrities can't read a note to save their lives. In the forties, fifties and mid sixties, musicians had to have at least a couple of hundred songs in their repertoire. Now we have rap 'artist' who might've been janitors at best, in the day..........

Watching them singing together is like when you enjoy the movie "Singin´ in the Rain": make you smile and bright the sun in your day :-)
Nobody did this better than Louis and Keely.
I love this tune. Louis Prima's voice and signifie style were ans still are unique
Kookie Keeley and crazy Louis... they were perfection in this song! I've loved this song since I was a child and have never been a fan of 50's music, but this was SPECIAL!
Class and overwhelming!!! What a show!!!
Grew up with this. I've had a lifetime of listening and seeing so many styles, genres, venues etc. Nothing beats this.
Love Louis Prima. Totally fills my heart with happiness. This is one of the best.
Thanks for the upload btw
He was the king of the swingers, the jungle VIP.
She made this song so funny. Love her voice. Thanks for posting.
Just becoming aware of Keely Smith and her work. Her voice is incredible, and she's gorgeous. She always looks great on stage and I think that bob haircut was invented for her. Louis isn't too shabby either.
I never realized how large Louis' hands are.
Rest in peace, Keely...you were magical!
Fantastic music and singing.....very clever. Everyone on point dressed up in suits, shirts and ties even the piano top is shining.
Impossible to be sad while watching this.
What a refreshingly original and oddly memorable song.
Her voice is amazing!
I played her show in Palm Springs in the 90’s. She was still Amazing and Fantastic! She and Louie Reunited singing forever!
Great music and so much more. The way these artists perform together is magic
I looked it up. This was from the Dinah Shore Chevy Show. www.imdb.com/title/tt0560527/fullcredits?ref_=tt_ov_st_sm
Fabulous !!!!
Nearly 60 years old. Great showmanship & musicianship combined with humour.
Ya don't get this nowadays
Off the charts awesome. The costumes, the music, the vocals, the band, the asrtistic expression, all of it.
You compare this magnificence to the junk that today's pop musicians are putting out. No comparison. Back then, there were REAL talented, legends in music! God bless Louis Prima, Sam Butera, Keely and their whole bunch! :-)
There are talented people today, I promise you. Check out Aldous Harding.
Absolutely!!!!!!!
Amen and Amen - If only we had the 4K tech back 60 plus years ago!!
@@JR-jx5ri I'm 81 and I well remember Louis we used to play his music at parties in Auckland NZ Wonderful band, arrangements, pure jazz Love it. I play the guitar and write music even Dixieland music that he cut his teeth on. He was an excellent trumpet player in that style pioneered by Louis A and Bix. Great!!!
@@Berus7777 correct!!!...Aldous H is terrific, thanks!! a bit more intense that Prima 🤣... there are many unknowns also who make creative, awesome music: jazz, folk combos..... i think HCB is talking mainstream pop, of which s/he is right....is boring crap!!!!
She has such a beautiful voice 💗
Without UA-cam I would never have seen this wonderful clip !
I always loved Keely Smith and Louie Prima, still do. They made me laugh with the silly antics. The first time I saw Sonny and Cher I said they must have taken notes from them. They were playful and silly too. Cher being a bit more serious like Keely and Sonny being all over the place like Louie. Wish we still had singers like Keely and Louie. Thanks for the video.😊
He was just incredible !!!! He never disappointed his audience. And Keeley was so talented !!!
WOW!!! This is the best, most fun music clip I've seen in a long time! LOVE Keely and Louis!
Soectacular! I performed that song in high school. My costume was half and half. I turned one way when i sang Kellies part and the other when i sang Louis part and when they sang together i faced the audience and samg the duet
How Cool! I would have loved to have been in the audience!
Lord how I miss these folks. Pure entertainment!
New Orleans native here, Louie Prima was on the air for us since we were kids ❤
One of my favorite creations of music in the whole world! I never even got to hear it till about 5 years ago. Life is crazy!
Class, class, class. What a couple. An era of unbridled fun.
“For your the BLUBBER I’ve waited for.” classic! Haha! Such incredible entertainers!
I love the way they interact, such affection and fun. Keely had a great comedic sense. I loved it when they were on TV.
She was the best, what a voice! Before you RIP Keeley, there's a welcome party waiting for you to entertain them up there!
Hello friend, how are you doing today
Every time I get a little down and I need a feel good song I watch Louis and Keely. What great chemistry and they're having so much fun. It's contagious. Keely's impish dead pan and Louis saying she was the blubber he'd been waiting for and Keely giving him the get lost sign towards the end-- too much fun.❤
Thank you! One of my all time favs! Love the non verbal banter between Keely and Louis... that band really knew how to put on a show!
Estoy gratamente sorprendido por la calidad, originalidad y la interpretación de estos artistas que desconocía. Gracias por este gran vídeo.
so outstanding Keely and Prima and Jimmy with those drum breaks so awesome They were having so much fun!
They are two of the greats in the Big Band Era. Love their music and their act.
0:56 "oh you're the blubber I have waited for" -- instead of lover. No doubt deliberate, the whole act was so planned out. What a classic clip, thanks for posting. Keely's dress is something else!
Thank goodness Keely went solo. I spent, what was to me a fortune, on her LPs as a young lad.
One of the greatest night club acts of the 50's they always tore the house down at Mr. Kelly's in Chicago back in the day.
Remember this as an 8 year old and memorized all the words..... love seeing it... Thanks
Before my time, since I was not born until 1968. But "The Jungle Book," got me started on him. Then more recently someone put this video on Facebook, so I discovered her too.
Thanks, Douglas. Keely Smith mugging for the camera was priceless in itself! 🙋♀️❤❤
Thank you Michael Imperioli...I truly enjoyed that.
So cool! I always loved these two!! Before all the technology sucked the life and soul out of music.
Douglas thank you so very much for uploading this. I can remember when I first discovered Louis Prima and Keely Smith my now deceased Grandfather Lindsay Blake 1933-2018 actually had a cassette tape called, "A Tribute To Louis Prima" & I became a lifelong fan of both them since I was a teenager so many years ago back in the mid 90's (I'm 41 now just about to turn 42 in a couple of days!!!). I remember TCM or AMC use to show Black and White movies that they appeared in and I had a crush on Keely as I thought that she reminded me of a girl that I loved so many years ago. Thank you so very much for this upload.
She was great in the movie Thunder Road with Robert Mitchum!!
Wow - what a duo - great voices !!!!
Thank you for posting this to UA-cam , I heard this at a Starbucks today and had to hear it again. Someone preserved this clip for posterity and it shows Vegas had the hottest lounge acts because Fidel Castro closed all the clubs in Cuba . Frank Sinatra , Sammy Davis Jr. Dean Martin and Louis Prima are all dead now and at least we have UA-cam to see these talented singers in their hey day. Now , they belong to posterity and new generations can see how the Rat Pack entranced the middle classes in the swinging 60s.
Louis Prima wrote the swing era classic "Sing Sing Sing" in 1936 when he was only 26. Benny Goldman's version made it unforgettable.
Gene kruper tore it up
Supposedly it was originally "Sing, Bing, Sing". Bing Crosby was considered a hep-cat in his day.
Pure magic from these two!!! Special act, what a show!!! Love it.Keeley is truly something to behold!!!!
Awww Keely loved u when I was a kid. RIP. Louie , no one can replace you...crazy, man!
What a great sound, they don't make music like that today!!!
That children, is how it's done!
I do believe so!
Absolutely. Great entertainers
Thanks for posting this! I'm making a song list for my a memorial for my mom who passed away last month at 96 and she and my dad used to go see Prima and Keeley in Vegas and loved them they b/c they were so much like my mom & dad! :) :) :) This video won't be in the playlist for the memorial as it will be a Spotify list, but I'm also posting a YT playlist for my friends and family and they will LOVE this! Kisses! eb
Great contribution for fans of Louis Prima & Keely Smith...and of Sam Butera and the Witnesses!
