- Last week, I received a this awesome package from the fine folks at Karma Air Guns and DonnyFL: the Karma SLS in .22 caliber! The mission? To put this semi-automatic system to the ultimate cold weather test. This will be a multi-part series documenting my findings.
For part one, I took it out for the first two days of testing. On day one, I prepped the Karma SLS and set off on this adventure. The morning started at a brisk 25°F as I placed the air gun into my truck around 7 o’clock. After a busy workday where the SLS spent about 5.5 hours in the truck, I headed to a dairy farm. When I arrived on the farm the thermometer in the truck was hovering around 30 degrees. I was thrilled to bag two pigeons from the top of a silo at an 55 yards!
Day two brought even colder conditions. The air gun had spent the night in my vehicle as the temperatures plummeted to nearly 0°F. It was quite a sight to see how the Karma SLS held up after being in the truck for about 24 to 26 hours, mostly near that bone-chilling mark.
I took the gun to the range, setting up my Death Grip tripod at 30 yards. I was inspired by PJ Clark's stellar review of the Karma SLS. I already knew how accurately it could shoot and that it groups tightly, but this test was all about seeing how well the semi-automatic system performs in the cold.
For those of you familiar with traditional firearms, you know that in extremely cold weather, semi-automatic guns can get finicky. I have had my guns jam or struggling to feed and extract casings. As cold weather starts to effect mechanical parts.
To start, I fired the first shot as a preliminary accuracy test to ensure everything was on point. After that, it was time for a mag dump! I wanted to see how well the system would function in the frigid temps and if any issues would arise with the SLS. Day 2 showed no issues. The SLS ran smooth, feeding each round flawlessly.
I’m excited to share this journey with you, so stay tuned for more updates in this series. I hope you enjoy it!
