For the younger trees the best way to prune is to simply pinch off the little star of new growth you'll see forming at the top of the tree, that will stimulate lateral growth and stem thickening.

Love your positive Energy. I started to grow 2 Avocados a little over a year ago and have never pruned them. I'm wondering if its too late to prune them now, because I want them to grow more "bushy". Greetings from Germany
Soren, thank you for reaching out. I used to travel to Erlangen on occasion. Beautiful part of the world. Anyhow, no it's not too late. One thing you can do is look for new horns of growth and pinch them off with your fingers, that should trigger lateral growth. Do you keep them indoors?
Yeah I keep them indoor. Sorry but I don't really understand what you mean. So I shouldn't cut it but just keep it from growing vertically by controlling the growth? thanks for your advice :)
The Gleason's map is a good representation of the flat earth as "it is". Flight patterns make more sense on this map. The bedford level is a good experiment to show lack of curvature over distances. Thanks Tamim. I appreciate you pointing that out because I strive to be me but sometimes in front of a camera it's hard to be yourself. I used to go out to Erlangen on business trips...absolutely loved the place. Also got to see Berlin once.
Hi. I just pruned the 6 seedlings I sent a video of. You're 100% right 😂 😂 it WAS difficult to do psychologically and emotionally 😂 😂 I'm still kind of doubting myself. But I left at least 2 leaves on each plant, so I feel a little less doubtful.
@@SleepyLizard Actually youtube had recommended me a video of yours about grafting, and from there lead me to this one! I had never heard of that before and thought it was really interesting. unfortunately, I am in a college dorm for now and not much room for growing plants, but I will definitely keep that in mind when I move back to a home with a larger garden!
Question: is it possible to wait too long to do the first pruning? my little tree is under a year old (but getting close to a year since i first started sprouting it), and i've never pruned it because i didn't realize i needed to until now. it's just a long (3 foot tall) stem with leaves coming off the sides all the way up -- no branches. And to prune it, would i only take off the top leaves, or would i take them ALL off? thanks so much, really enjoy your videos!
Man I’ve seen like 10 plus of your videos and I gotta say I love your style of content and I’m going to keep consuming it as I’m learning a lot. Curious since you’re growing avocados, where do you live?
We live in New Zealand so we will definately be having Avocado House Plants. About 3 months ago i planted 4 seeds and they have all sprouted but very very slow. I think because at first they were deep in the soil and not sticking out. Now they are all growing great, but my question is - at what height do you start pruning for an indoor plant. Currently the biggest one is about 30 cms and has most of the leaves at the top but a few buds down the stalk. Its quite a think stalk though so just not sure when to start prunning.
I have a problem with one of my plants, and I noticed on your plant, at the 10:10 mark. The tips of some of the leaves are dark brown. One of my plants (9 months old) is getting those brown patches, the one next to it, same age, is not. Is there a problem with the brown patches, or is that normal. I trimmed off 3 of the brown leaves, as they were about 80% all brown and the areas were dry. Thanks for any info. By the way, I planted my first seed nearly a year ago, when I first saw one of your videos. You are the Obe One of avocados.
Thank you Jazzmann your message makes me really happy. Try spraying a little coating of copper antifungal spray every 30 to 45 days and see if that helps with the brown spots. Come back and let me know
Thanks for all the tips! I grew around 6 avocado already and 3 of them died, one after 3 years. I put the whole seed inside soil and when I checked the seed, after my plant died, the seed was fully rotten. Should the seed be fully in the soli, partially, not at all?
Kaszub, I leave the top quarter or so of the seed out of the soil. It eventually degenerates and disappears. It's good that you're getting 3 years out of the survivors though. Have you considered grafting them?
@@SleepyLizard I haven't consider grafting because I don't know good avocado farm in North California, which can provide buds. Do you also sell buds for grafting? I know that you're not doing grafting yourself but what about cutting and selling good buds :)? It might be a good business as you have the biggest avocados in the youtube and people know it :)!
Kaszub, yes we sell budwood on our online store including the varieties of the giant fruit, ha! You can get it here: www.guacfarm.com/product-page/avocado-scion-wood
Maro, good luck with the seedlings. Take a look at this vid, it tells you everything you need to know to get fruit from your trees: ua-cam.com/video/ySeetOBf7og/v-deo.html
Maro first thing is first in order to get fruit in around 5 years you will have to graft you avocado plant very soon as soon as it reaches the thickness of a pencil if you don't graft you will have to wait anywhere from 8 to 12 years. If you don't know how to graft check videos out here from the same person he is super good.
@Maro Nalla You could buy one grafted tree to be sure to get some good tasting fruit than at a later date buy some scions and graft on to your seedling. You can buy scions to graph onto your seedlings or if you know someone with a tree that is fruiting they may give you a branch from their tree. Unless you graph a scioñ you could wait and water for years and miss out on Avacados when you could buy a fruiting Avaçado and have fruit fairly soon. I am going to buy a Gem that's semi dwarf and fruits every year and a Reed that fruits every other year. Both are smaller trees and the Reed is slim and upright and the Gem is bush and note as tall. More wide. Then I would like some scion branches to put on seedlings with a variety of different Avaçado types. For sure would like a Nabal plus many other good àvacado variety to pick from. This way you don't have to wait many years to enjoy this super food according to experts. Good luck. Sounds like your doing good with your seedlings. I think you have a great climate for growing. 👍🏼
Just have to make sure the bottom part is always in water. I did mine this past summer and it worked. I actually made sure half the seed was submerged. Kept it in the front window. It got partial sun in the mornings and some direct in the afternoons. To my surprise the root grew nice and long before I saw the top part strout.
I have a question I planned one last year in dirt and it's getting pretty big but around August last year something started eat holes in my leaves how do I stop that ?
I love 😍 your video, I'm interested now in planting commercial avocado farm in my country, I need your suggestion what kind of avocado I should plant....we have about 26 typhoon a year. The strongest this year was typhoon Rolly a 200km/hr cyclone(typhoon).
I planted an avocado seed about 6 months ago and have a beautiful growing tree. I did transfer my tree outside for the summertime and am concerned about how it will do when I bring it back indoors for the winter. If you have any tips, I would love to know them.
Hello! I pruned my avocado for the first about a month ago and I am seeing no new growth at all. It just remains a stalk with no leaves. Have I done something wrong and what can I do to encourage growth?
Hi! A few times, my avocadoplants rooted real nice, and when the shoot came up, the shoot kind of died or stoppend growing after one inch. I grew them in water. Do you know what I can do about this? Thank you!
Hi Tim, try planting a few in topsoil instead of water. it might take a few weeks up to a few months before you see a shoot but don't give up on it...remember it'll be growing roots down below that you won't like like you see when they're in water.
Last year I grew lemon, mango and avocado plants. Sadly to say that they all did not survive due to spider mites, I probably used to much pesticide on them and me being an over protected plant mother (if you want to look at it that way). I'm going to try again this year, but I think I'm having issues with getting my mango seeds to grow.
@@SleepyLizard oh, I will. I really would like to find some banana seeds and a mango that has a polyembryonic seed to grow because I prefer to grow plants from seeds instead of buying a mature plant.
@SleepyLizard what are the possibilities of having the seeds of the fruit itself shipped to Texas? And how much will it cost? July is my birth month. Go cancers!
Peter, when the trees are small it doesn't matter. You can prune whenever you want. As they mature (I'm talking 10 years or more) it's best to wait until the "dormant" period which is two months prior to flowering.
I am seeking confirmation, so please see if you can confirm for me an idea i have about my climate and avocado propagation. Los Angeles has winters that drop temperatures down to 30 or so degrees a few nights a year for 6 hours or so. I want to conclude that this is not enough cold for avocado trees to NOT survive since i see plenty of examples of them living near by, however, what about the baby ones i am growing? should i make a green house for them? I might use 2 x 4's and build a makeshift green house with contractors 6 ply plastic around it stapled on to at least shelter the plants.
I don't want to fail cause i am dealing with a rare strain of avocado so I want to get this perfect on the first try. Just indulge me and help me with you valued opinion, please.
M Ppp, A few nights at or below freezing won't kill a mature tree but you're right, you'll need to protect your young trees. That said, depending on when the freeze occurs you might not get fruit that year, it could kill the flowers. Temperature is only one of the variables, humidity, barometric pressure, and wind speed also play a role You need to pay attention to the dew point. This video talks about frosts and freezes and some of the techniques we use to protect our trees. ua-cam.com/video/Sa7xbWpoL5E/v-deo.html
As a teacher, hearing you encourage people to view mistakes as part of the natural learning process is appreciated.

For the younger trees the best way to prune is to simply pinch off the little star of new growth you'll see forming at the top of the tree, that will stimulate lateral growth and stem thickening.
Thanks very much for your teaching is wander full to learn I have abocado tree is about 2 foot tall ,but. I don't want to keep as a house 🏠 plant, I want that three give me fruit 🥑 but I have a problem, I don't haven't terrens only my Small apartment, but however I don't give up, nd.
@@sorenhutter1153 You can do either. You can cut it or you can just pinch the new growth. both methods will give you lateral growth.

I love avocados too. Haha. My 1 year old from seed is about 4ft tall and 2.5 ft wide. Been in the ground about 6 months now. Had it in my greenhouse before that. Central Florida.
sounds like you have a nice healthy tree going there. Do you plan on grafting it?
yes all freemasons from the royal arch freemasons....bunch of cross dressers.
awesome video. Love the positiveness and encouraging wisdom. Thank you
I appreciate your positive feedback, thank you
I love how real u r. Greetings from Germany :)
Thanks Tamim. I appreciate you pointing that out because I strive to be me but sometimes in front of a camera it's hard to be yourself. I used to go out to Erlangen on business trips...absolutely loved the place. Also got to see Berlin once.
We grow avodado outdoor in Morocco north africa, in some areas that have mild winters of course
I'd love to see a pic of your trees!
Im encourage to plant avocado in my small farm in philippines
Yes!
Thanks, among other things, for the flashback to when I, too, lived in the Everglades :)
I love it here

I'm not even 2 minutes in and you crack me up. Well done cause it takes as lot to make me laugh these days :)
Thank you. I appreciate the compliment.
Hi. I just pruned the 6 seedlings I sent a video of. You're 100% right 😂 😂 it WAS difficult to do psychologically and emotionally 😂 😂 I'm still kind of doubting myself. But I left at least 2 leaves on each plant, so I feel a little less doubtful.
ouchie, it hurts a little yes. Now you gotta sick back and give it some time.
I live in North Dakota will my house plant produce fruit?
Moe, unfortunately not. You need to be in USDA hardiness zone 7a or above.
@@SleepyLizard Thank you
So no grafting for these avocados trees?
There's no need because the tree won't fruit indoors anyhow.
@@SleepyLizardso the indoor plant will never produce fruit 😢
Trying this out , lets hope for the best !
Good Luck! What part of the world are you gonna grow it in?
@@SleepyLizard thank you ! and in california :)
@@xochitltorres9758 oh, you can do more than grow it as a house plant, you can do a grafted one and get fruit too.
@@xochitltorres9758 you're gonna have a lot of fun with it!
Awesome video I’m going to start to save my seeds now
the way your collection is growing you're gonna need to buy a few more acres!
SleepyLizard I know it’s kinda of addicting lol
Man I’ve seen like 10 plus of your videos and I gotta say I love your style of content and I’m going to keep consuming it as I’m learning a lot. Curious since you’re growing avocados, where do you live?
thank you so much for the compliment. Reading this is a great way to end my day. We are in Homestead Florida.
If the earth is round, then why are maps flat? What does my GPS have a flat screen?
hmmm. excellent question. if the earth is flat why are globes round?
@@SleepyLizard Marketing. All the globes are made in China. China knows that if they spread the lie, then they could sell more round globes.
I'll have to dig a deep hole and see where it takes me
We live in New Zealand so we will definately be having Avocado House Plants. Its quite a think stalk though so just not sure when to start prunning.
actually its been about 5 months since i first planted them.
about 50 cm would be good
I have a problem with one of my plants, and I noticed on your plant, at the 10:10 mark.
Come back and let me know
@@SleepyLizard Thanks, I'll do that and let you know how/if it works. You have a great weekend and week too.
@@SleepyLizard That's perfect! I think I will definitely buy one pack next spring :)!
I am growing 5 avocado seed inside my house in greece and 3 more in my other house in Cyprus there 5 months old.. I wish someday they give me fruits 😍
Maro, good luck with the seedlings. Take a look at this vid, it tells you everything you need to know to get fruit from your trees: ua-cam.com/video/ySeetOBf7og/v-deo.html
Thank you for your answer 😁
How does the toothpick in water method work? I could never start a seed or even have a root pop up. I will try this to at least 2 of my trees.
Just have to make sure the bottom part is always in water. I did mine this past summer and it worked. I actually made sure half the seed was submerged. Kept it in the front window. It got partial sun in the mornings and some direct in the afternoons. To my surprise the root grew nice and long before I saw the top part strout.
Michael, Peter C's response is right on. If you do what he says you'll get seeds to sprout.
Thanks!
I have a question I planned one last year in dirt and it's getting pretty big but around August last year something started eat holes in my leaves how do I stop that ?
dish soap diluted one teaspoon to a liter of water.
Thank you! I got a seed shooting down a root with the toothpick method!
I love 😍 your video, I'm interested now in planting commercial avocado farm in my country, I need your suggestion what kind of avocado I should plant....we have about 26 typhoon a year.
The strongest this year was typhoon Rolly a 200km/hr cyclone(typhoon).
Excellent Info! hello from Cold Alberta
Brrr. 🥶
I planted an avocado seed about 6 months ago and have a beautiful growing tree. I did transfer my tree outside for the summertime and am concerned about how it will do when I bring it back indoors for the winter. If you have any tips, I would love to know them.
Sandra, your tree will be fine but don't get worried if it drops leaves when you bring it inside. They do that then they grow nice new green leaves.
I'm going to do that!!!
please come back and tell us how it goes
What kinds of soil apply in avocado ,in our home yard, in small space
something that drains well and you can augment with fertilizer if you want.
This guy is just awesome!!
Well thank you Eric. I'm glad I started by day by reading your comment!
Hello! I pruned my avocado for the first about a month ago and I am seeing no new growth at all. It just remains a stalk with no leaves. Have I done something wrong and what can I do to encourage growth?
nah you're good...this time of year is the dormant period. it'll take off in a month or two.
I have an avacado that's got 2 stems growing from the seed do I need to cut 1off or just leave it
Dean, yes, cut the runt and let the dominant one grow
@@SleepyLizard I will. Enjoying your videos, thanks!
actually I meant to say potting soil not topsoil.
Last year I grew lemon, mango and avocado plants. Sadly to say that they all did not survive due to spider mites, I probably used to much pesticide on them and me being an over protected plant mother (if you want to look at it that way). I'm going to try again this year, but I think I'm having issues with getting my mango seeds to grow.
keep trying softsuga. it's all about experience
@@SleepyLizard oh, I will. I really would like to find some banana seeds and a mango that has a polyembryonic seed to grow because I prefer to grow plants from seeds instead of buying a mature plant.
I will have nam duc mai mango in July. they are polyembryonic.
@SleepyLizard what are the possibilities of having the seeds of the fruit itself shipped to Texas? And how much will it cost? July is my birth month. Go cancers!
Does it matter the time of year to prune? Since some of us are north of the equator?
Peter, when the trees are small it doesn't matter. You can prune whenever you want. As they mature (I'm talking 10 years or more) it's best to wait until the "dormant" period which is two months prior to flowering.
I’m scared to prune! 😱I have a beautiful tree started!
first cut's always the hardest
might not be able to harvest fruit outside, but I can enjoy a couple lush trees indoors
people are growing them all over the world like that.
Was that a green anole in the background of the greenhouse?
yep
@@SleepyLizard Cool. Gotta love the green pest control!
Great video , i just plant my seedling in a pot. Greetings from Macedonia :)
greetings
That would make a nice bonsai tree
Marie, a lot of the subscribers on this channel grow indoor avocado trees that they prune into beautiful bushy little house plants.
How long do you think you can grow one in a pot? I mean like a real large pot?
There's subscribers on this page who've had them going 10+ years.
