Where i found this track?
Do a vid with timothy molloy from our last night band🔥🔥
I think they’re both good, My personal opinion, I would do the simplistic part with Brooks Trashy Cymbals to give it more power.
I like the complex one better. I wish the guitars and bass had been cut lower though so we could more clearly hear the drums.
Where do you find these tracks?
Brooks Wackerman: *Moves wrist one time*
*12 hits are clearly audible*
😂😂😂
Nothing can ever replace the Rev but he will do. RIP
Killjøy Clique he’s got that same style by playing off beat clean rhythms
Pure talent and a lifetime of practice dudes a true master of the instrument

Depends on the musical application. Both can work. And holy shit Brooks Wackerman \M/
This.
I've always felt that simple vs complexity comes down to what the song is intended to do. If it's intended to just make you want to move, simplicity is where it's at. I mean, just a basic four on the floor beat works wonders in just making someone tap their foot, or bob their head, or move in any way. I guess that's why pop music tends to be simple, it's just meant to dance to. But music that is meant to be *listened* to is when you want complexity. The music that makes you have to think about what you're hearing. Neither is inherently worse than the other, they just have different applications.
Obviously, it's possible to combine these with the right mind set / skill, but just as a generalization.
Next up: Animals as Leaders song with some standard Rock drums and some Rock song with Animals as Leaders style drums.
Woud be funny to hear and would really give you an example of what the drum beat does to the music.
Brooks is the man! His brother Chad might be even better
Brooks Wackerman was the drummer for Bad Religion, a band that A7X has admitted to listening to a lot and taking some influence from OFC he kicks some ass
Both. Some parts needs simple, some sound better with complex.
Exactly
As a musician, your priority is to do justice to the track. Drumnastics aren't always appropriate.
So basically it needs balance
How Switzerland of you
I'm from Russia, and it's hard to say to me. My English is not very impressive, but you expressed my opinion. Thank you)
Brooks does a really good job making the drums sound and feel like a real instrument used for more than just keeping time. His playing just adds a layer of taste.
It’s very melodic and musical. It’s not just rhythms but playing with the sounds and tones to create what are essentially melodies.
A mixture of both LOL there were parts in the simple that I liked and parts in the complicated that I liked.
Yeah this sums it up perfectly tbh
Yea I think a mixture of both is the better than one of them only
Yess, exactly
I think that a mix gives the track the feel of breathing. The Simple lets the guitars shine and the Complex brings an energy and sense of urgency to ths mix. Very well done.
Kevin O'Quinn agreed!! With the some of the transitions from complex to tech and vice versa there were moments where it felt natural to go in that direction. What i did like about both was the change in tempo and both had breaks and fills that built it up and brung it down to headbang along to 🤘 great work from both!! 🥁

The Ravi Shankar effect.
It's not so much about which is "better", it's about knowing how to do both and more importantly WHEN to do both. There's a time for simplicity and a time for complexity.
Well said
Exactly. This also applies to basically every instrument.
Well said x2
Someone did a video comparing Ringo Starr's drumming which in itself was "simple" but how he knew exactly how to make it fit the song vs complexity and how it can take away from it. Knowing the difference is what makes a good drummer great.
exactly, by having the simple one come first before the complex one, it made the song sounds fuller and if we didn't pay attention to the video it does sounds like a proper transition as a single music instead of a comparison
My answer to the question of simple or complex is: “Yes.”
Too complex

It is though. Simplicity vs Technicality has always been an argument.
@@levibeam100 i think a mixture of both can do wonders for a song, you can amplify a section of a song that needs it and keep it simple for parts that are good enough on their own

Drummer’s Goal: To start off playing simple then catch everyone off guard by doing complex shit. Respect is earned as such
Lol that's kind of exactly what I always do when showing off in front of a group of people.
Definitely agree. I think it sounds really good too.
The respect of other drummers, maybe, but maybe not the respect of your band mates.
Even better write complex Drum parts that don't rely on straight double bass and fills. Incorporate Jazz High hat parts, polyrythms, and african tom beats. Bonus if you can play rudiments on bass drum instead of the typical metal double bass.
@@matthewd6306 Both ways are fine. I like playing both simple and more complex drum parts. Most important to play to the song. Personally, I typically only use double bass for fills or extra flavor
Brooks: yeah, this is my "simple."
He was like "Wait, I thought you asked ME to do the simple parts."
Holy poops. Brooks timing and rhythm are just other worldly. Both work, in certain parts complex was too much, simple was not enough, either way this is awesome.
Brooks was a good fit for a7x because he and the Rev both have a kinda non conventional approach to their rhythms but Brooks and Jimmy are still booth totally unique
A good transition back and forth from simple to complex would of really been insane. I prefer to keep things simple though
Somewhere right in the middle, flair is good in moderation and it makes things interesting , but too much can take away from that essential rhythmic foundation. The simple drumming had a very easily identifiable pulse, but it can get boring pretty quick. A combination of the two would be interesting while still retaining utility.
You should UA-cam search Terry Bozzio. Honestly he makes Neil Peart from Rush look like a chump.
What Brooks was doing wasn't just complex, but incredibly creative and that's what a lot of people look over.
Exactly, people think complex usually just means fast and hard. Sometimes you hear something that isn’t necessarily expert level but the creativeness of it and the way it switches the sound is just incredible.
I like both styles. Some songs sounds better simple, others works better with complex techniques. But if it's A7X songs I choose complexity.
I also like their use of contra melody at slow but also when then it picks up quickly and its still melody and a contra melody and then when drums are just equally as complex it's just an eargasm a lot times I don't even think how are they doing that I just sit back and enjoy.
The best drummers utilise both. But as a drummer I have to love the complex.

I 1000% agree with this
Have him get zacky as well and they can play together at the same time
Versatility and the proper use of both “simple” and “complex styles I think is what’s most important. Some of Jared’s style at the right moments absolutely drove the rhythm and made it sound so much tighter and connected, while Brooks complexity during fills or transitions played into the melody and rhythms of the guitar and made the song sound so much more technically advanced
Jared: arms
Brooks: Wrists
It's for visual apeal. If you play a simple beat and don't move it's not as effective visually. Most drummers do it.
When you play slow beats, usually people use arms. When you get to some faster stuff, u should be using wrists.
@Hanafi Ariffin no problem!
@Hanafi Ariffin And if u play ever faster, you would be using fingers, but that takes a lot of practice.

Brooks is better than the rev and portnoy. Portnoy is one of the most overrated drummers of all time, if you think he’s the best you haven’t heard many prog drummers. Go lookup mike portnoy vs billy Rymer drum battle, Billy rymer straight up embarrasses Portnoy.
Brooks Wakerman though. Jesus Christ. Dude is next level man.
2:47-3:00 was perfect. Complex, incredibly musical and complementing the rest of what was going on so well.
my favorite part, too :)
made better by the drop back to a simple beat. anyone who argues purely for one or the other misses the point of variety!
William Machado just wanted to write exactly that 👍😄
@@compulsive_curiosity Of course, but this part stood out as a perfect example of what complexity coupled with great musicality can achieve, even taken out of context and just heard on its own, this part still shines as an incredible and mature musical statement. Obviously this section is creating tension that will be resolved with the drop, Brooks understands that and enhanced the tension to its absolutely highest point before the 'drop', the drop wouldn't feel so good if the tension part wasn't so expertly done (and vice versa as you state), so both parts are working together.
Obviously the last name Wackerman bestows drum powers on whoever has it.
Cause Chad Wackerman is crazy too.
Pretty sure one of them was Holdsworths drummer
Dane Presley oh u know ur fusion.

They are quite accomplished and extremely talented
Michael Comminos u just schooled me cause i didn’t know there was a John Wackerman
A blend of both! Knowing when to spunk your load and when not too is what creates amazing drum tracks.
Truth
That's what makes Wackerman such a great drummer, in my opinion
Brooks has such a signature style of time-fuckery. This reminded me of the end of "Submission Complete" where Bad Religion basically just uleash him on the end of the track making it awesome squared.
This was really just like watching Brooks be Brooks and Jared giving us time to process what Brooks was playing
With Jared's drumming sounded like Killswitch Engage song, Brook's sounded like Tool song
Literlly my exact thoughts
Simple for chorus, intro and breakdowns.
Complex for lyrics, climax, tempo/key change and outro.
when youre a new drummer: "theyre both complex, i see no difference"
@Blake Houle Nope.
@Blake Houle yes.
I loved how the two styles blended so well throughout the song. There's a time for simple and complex in a song imo.
Brooks is really good at making things complex but tasteful. Wasn’t a fan of his first two segments, but the rest were all great. I especially loved his performance around 2:00

@@RileyAiC 😁
@@RileyAiC I think the simple just becomes boring over time. I mean how many times are you gonna hear the same on beat rhythm? Brooks is crushing totally new rhythms like every bar, it’s absolutely insane
Simple sounded best for easycore/metalcore. Complex was real proggy/groovy
Completely agree. Exactly what I was thinking
Agreed. I liked elements of the complex, but could only take a song or two before needing a breather. The simple is a good constant head banger that I would feel fine listening to for hours on end.
Tbh I gave points to each beat, and it came 4-5 in prefernce and this kinda says that its good to have some fills and complex beats besides a simple catchy beat.
Nick Macik Brooks is a great groovy drummer and A7x's music sounds great because of it, man ..
Exactly... although this now begs the question: Which genre is better????

lars simpol
well then it’d just be boring, that double bass does wonders
Simple is different than basic because no disrespect to AC/DC but they use a simple rock beat
Lmao
@@SenorSeiryuu I think you're seriously underestimating how much harder that process was in those days. Things you can throw together in a DAW in thirty minutes could sometimes take three or four days. It just wasn't viable when you could mic things up and play and get the whole song recorded in a day or two rather than one section of a drum loop in three or four.
it's not a matter of simplicity vs complexity. this is a matter of which grooove suits better with the song
Yeah but even then that depends on personal taste as well, someone may find a complex groove fits it, someone else may find a simple groove fits it
Which is the point of the video, it's seeing which ones people prefer/think suit the song the most
Depends on what the song calls for! Something like this benefits from simple stuff but a more progressive band obviously benefits from the complex, creative drum parts
Spud Magnum..... agreed. Like this tune with the simple stuff better...
As an ex-drummer myself, I like both. It all really depends on the riff and and how much you want to highlight or compliment it.
why ex?, and yeah i agree, the complex is obviously a lot nicer but the entire songs worth would be overkill ,definitely simple is superior when youre giving room to breathe
Why ex?
@@estebanmejia3473 Gave up drumming a few years ago and haven't practised since. Bit rusty to say the least. Chris Adler, I am not.
The “complex” sounds like a collection of breakdowns and transitions that could very well sit in between the simple rhythm. The genre you chose to write the song in demands a certain type of drumming that needs to be solid and not overwhelming. Perhaps in a death or prog song, things would work out differently. So, both and none, really.
Carlos Alberto Carbajal Constantine LoL

Depends on the listener:
As a drummer, i hear the simple beat and I'm like "oh yeah, that's cool" and start adding complexity in my mind as I listen and play along.

I just love how Brooks hit the drums with such accuracy and finesse, he looks so comfortable and effortless
Brooks murdered this, as expected
I will definitely always wish Jimmy was still alive, but Brooks is an amazing drummer to likely permanently fill the role. His technical skills are nearly Portnoy level
FleetingDream yeah he does play a lot like Jimmy. He nailed the prog style drumming on The Stage, and I can’t wait to see how his drumming fits into the next album
Both in succession the way it is in the video is the best. Letting the riffs breathe with simplicity and then adding intricacy for the remaining bars of the same riff is dope.
