Where i found this track?
Do a vid with timothy molloy from our last night band🔥🔥
I think they’re both good, My personal opinion, I would do the simplistic part with Brooks Trashy Cymbals to give it more power.
I like the complex one better. I wish the guitars and bass had been cut lower though so we could more clearly hear the drums.
Where do you find these tracks?
Brooks Wackerman: *Moves wrist one time*
*12 hits are clearly audible*
😂😂😂
Nothing can ever replace the Rev but he will do. RIP
Killjøy Clique he’s got that same style by playing off beat clean rhythms
Pure talent and a lifetime of practice dudes a true master of the instrument
@@billiejoeeyelash hes not replacing hes simply tag teaming in while the rev rests
Depends on the musical application. Both can work. And holy shit Brooks Wackerman \M/
This.
I've always felt that simple vs complexity comes down to what the song is intended to do. If it's intended to just make you want to move, simplicity is where it's at. I mean, just a basic four on the floor beat works wonders in just making someone tap their foot, or bob their head, or move in any way. I guess that's why pop music tends to be simple, it's just meant to dance to. But music that is meant to be *listened* to is when you want complexity. The music that makes you have to think about what you're hearing. Neither is inherently worse than the other, they just have different applications.
Obviously, it's possible to combine these with the right mind set / skill, but just as a generalization.
Next up: Animals as Leaders song with some standard Rock drums and some Rock song with Animals as Leaders style drums.
Woud be funny to hear and would really give you an example of what the drum beat does to the music.
Brooks is the man! His brother Chad might be even better
Brooks Wackerman was the drummer for Bad Religion, a band that A7X has admitted to listening to a lot and taking some influence from OFC he kicks some ass

It's not so much about which is "better", it's about knowing how to do both and more importantly WHEN to do both. There's a time for simplicity and a time for complexity.
Well said
Exactly. This also applies to basically every instrument.
Well said x2
Someone did a video comparing Ringo Starr's drumming which in itself was "simple" but how he knew exactly how to make it fit the song vs complexity and how it can take away from it. Knowing the difference is what makes a good drummer great.
exactly, by having the simple one come first before the complex one, it made the song sounds fuller and if we didn't pay attention to the video it does sounds like a proper transition as a single music instead of a comparison
Both. Some parts needs simple, some sound better with complex.
Exactly
As a musician, your priority is to do justice to the track. Drumnastics aren't always appropriate.
So basically it needs balance
How Switzerland of you
I'm from Russia, and it's hard to say to me. My English is not very impressive, but you expressed my opinion. Thank you)
Combo of both. There were simple pieces that fit way better and complex parts that grooved better
Agreed
Definitely
Exactly. There are always parts where what the guitarist is doing is more important than what the drummer is doing. Each person knowing when they should come in with something more complex or simple is what makes or breaks a band's sound. If every one is just doing super complex, highly technical stuff all at once, it's hard to pay attention to what's going on, which ultimately detracts from the overall sound of the song.
Can't agree more!
True
Brooks does a really good job making the drums sound and feel like a real instrument used for more than just keeping time. His playing just adds a layer of taste.
It’s very melodic and musical. It’s not just rhythms but playing with the sounds and tones to create what are essentially melodies.
2:57 that double bass combined with choking cymbals...🔥🔥
It sounds sweeter because his kicks are so solid
@@nathanlawrence656 it's Brooks we r talking about man!
@@Sobitachi The king of punk and now a destroyer of prog. What can't this man do? And yes, he is the KING of punk. Above Barker. Barker's amazing too, but Brooks somehow manages to play perfectly clean like a drum machine while maintaining groove. There's no weirdness.
@@xfrostyresonance8614 Brooks is technically so advanced.. the wrist control and everything is just perfect..
They’re essentially different but equal. Making the drums complex shifts the focus to the drums, while keeping it simple puts the emphasis on the guitar work and bass.
So it just depends on what part is being done.
Ye
I liked both. Then again, I like progressive metal. I like the simple beat, then the complex one. Then, I like a different simple beat and a different complex one. It kept progressing. All that was missing was 5 minutes of guitar noodling...
Really
Also, the simple beats don't change the feel of a riff nearly as much as a complex drum pattern will.
I completely agree. Both sound great in their own respect.
A mixture of both LOL there were parts in the simple that I liked and parts in the complicated that I liked.
Yeah this sums it up perfectly tbh
Yea I think a mixture of both is the better than one of them only
Yess, exactly
I think that a mix gives the track the feel of breathing. The Simple lets the guitars shine and the Complex brings an energy and sense of urgency to ths mix. Very well done.
Kevin O'Quinn agreed!! With the some of the transitions from complex to tech and vice versa there were moments where it felt natural to go in that direction. What i did like about both was the change in tempo and both had breaks and fills that built it up and brung it down to headbang along to 🤘 great work from both!! 🥁

What Brooks was doing wasn't just complex, but incredibly creative and that's what a lot of people look over.
Exactly, people think complex usually just means fast and hard. Sometimes you hear something that isn’t necessarily expert level but the creativeness of it and the way it switches the sound is just incredible.

Versatility and the proper use of both “simple” and “complex styles I think is what’s most important. Some of Jared’s style at the right moments absolutely drove the rhythm and made it sound so much tighter and connected, while Brooks complexity during fills or transitions played into the melody and rhythms of the guitar and made the song sound so much more technically advanced
How about next is Simple vs Complex Guitar (ft. Synyster Gates)
Hahaha
that would be my birthday
Yes
This would be just awesome!
Got him
Perfect idea
The complex sounds awesome, but the simple one flowed perfectly with the music
Cardboard Silver it’s fit with the track as well :D
That' s why is trivial
This
Simple flows with the music but the music flows with the complex
The whole point of the complex is to not only flow with the music but to add it's own properties. Complex is great if it's done correctly, otherwise it'll just sound like it doesn't fit, or it'll take attention away from other elements of the song
"How close do you want the snare mic, Jared"
"Yes."
Brooks Wakerman though. Jesus Christ. Dude is next level man.
I liked the simple one for keeping the main flow of the song.
The complex one was better for transitions, the bridge, and the ending.
I agree 100%. As a drummer myself I follow a rule of k.i.s.s. keep it simple stupid.
Agreed
Yeah agree too.
Exactly what I was going to write!
Musician's in general have to remember to make everything not so busy. Space is always a must.
Drummer’s Goal: To start off playing simple then catch everyone off guard by doing complex shit. Respect is earned as such
Lol that's kind of exactly what I always do when showing off in front of a group of people.
Definitely agree. I think it sounds really good too.
The respect of other drummers, maybe, but maybe not the respect of your band mates.
Even better write complex Drum parts that don't rely on straight double bass and fills. Incorporate Jazz High hat parts, polyrythms, and african tom beats. Bonus if you can play rudiments on bass drum instead of the typical metal double bass.
@@matthewd6306 Both ways are fine. I like playing both simple and more complex drum parts. Most important to play to the song. Personally, I typically only use double bass for fills or extra flavor
Brooks has such a signature style of time-fuckery. This reminded me of the end of "Submission Complete" where Bad Religion basically just uleash him on the end of the track making it awesome squared.
With Jared's drumming sounded like Killswitch Engage song, Brook's sounded like Tool song

What?? Respect to my man jimmy but drum line in the beast & the harlot is a generic double bass drumline...the stage is a7x most techincal album they ever released.
Skill wise brooks is way better than jimmy, but i always choose jimmy over brooks not because the skill but the emotional attachment
I love Brooks' drumming on Bad Religion's "The Empire Strikes First" album, the intensity is straight up relentless on that one.
He also ruled it on Suicidal Tendencies Six The Hard Way.
Yesss I can’t get enough of that
Holy poops. Brooks timing and rhythm are just other worldly. Both work, in certain parts complex was too much, simple was not enough, either way this is awesome.
Brooks was a good fit for a7x because he and the Rev both have a kinda non conventional approach to their rhythms but Brooks and Jimmy are still booth totally unique
A good transition back and forth from simple to complex would of really been insane. I prefer to keep things simple though
Somewhere right in the middle, flair is good in moderation and it makes things interesting , but too much can take away from that essential rhythmic foundation. The simple drumming had a very easily identifiable pulse, but it can get boring pretty quick. A combination of the two would be interesting while still retaining utility.
You should UA-cam search Terry Bozzio. Honestly he makes Neil Peart from Rush look like a chump.
Brooks: OK, when can I start the complex part?
Jared: what? You already played it.
Brooks: I was warming up dude
I really love how he also has that The Rev vibe of making it look so easy.
So true
Oh oh someone's in trouble

The Ravi Shankar effect.
When you can blend a mixture of simple and complexity into the song, you make a song go from good to great. And that simple to complex transition at around @2:35 was just perfect
I think it's the best example to show how both are needed to add complexity to a song without overloading it with detail

I know a7x was trying to find that perfect sound that they got from Jimmy for a long time and they've found it with brooks
Couldn't agree more. Brooks fits so perfectly. Still miss the rev though. Miss his vocals and creativity.
Jimmy also sang vocals and played a various amount of instruments. He also wrote some of their best songs. I may miss him dearly because he was taken from us so early but I'm happy they found Brooks, The dude's a beast!

Brooks has slowly become my favorite drummer. I love his playing style
I like both styles. Some songs sounds better simple, others works better with complex techniques. But if it's A7X songs I choose complexity.
I also like their use of contra melody at slow but also when then it picks up quickly and its still melody and a contra melody and then when drums are just equally as complex it's just an eargasm a lot times I don't even think how are they doing that I just sit back and enjoy.
With a name like Brooks Wackerman, he was DESTINED to be a drummer
all of his brothers and father are also drummers, making him even more destined.

@@randomuser-vs3oe Two of three brothers are drummers. One is a bassist.
I love how loosely Brooks holds the drumsticks, similar to the way Sean Kinney, of Alice in Chains, holds them.
If this is how Brooks plays normally, imagine if on the next A7X album he got a drum solo.
Ok I’m gonna be the one to say it, there was no “age old question” for simplicity or complexity, he just wanted to do a video with Brooks Wackerman
It is though. Simplicity vs Technicality has always been an argument.
@@levibeam100 i think a mixture of both can do wonders for a song, you can amplify a section of a song that needs it and keep it simple for parts that are good enough on their own
Not entirely true, sometimes over complicating it makes it sounds worse or takes away from the song
@@Xxfishman058xX_chad Well he did.
Sometimes less is more, sometimes more is more, it depend on the context
Combine those two together and you basically have a Dream Theater song
Rather coincidental since Portnoy played on Nightmare

Haha, exactly what I was thinking. Portnoy has always been amazing at combining complex parts with simpler parts to form a more complete whole.

@@Seiryuu03 I think you're seriously underestimating how much harder that process was in those days. Things you can throw together in a DAW in thirty minutes could sometimes take three or four days. It just wasn't viable when you could mic things up and play and get the whole song recorded in a day or two rather than one section of a drum loop in three or four.
A blend of both! Knowing when to spunk your load and when not too is what creates amazing drum tracks.

Now to the video, both approaches were awesome in their own way!
Both approaches make the song unique. The simple makes it sound like a radio friendly tune, the complex is down right prog mastery.
Drums are so important to a song and both approaches are just killer. Awesome video Jared! Amazing drumming Brooks!!
Simple for chorus, intro and breakdowns.
Complex for lyrics, climax, tempo/key change and outro.
2:47-3:00 was perfect. Complex, incredibly musical and complementing the rest of what was going on so well.
my favorite part, too :)
made better by the drop back to a simple beat. anyone who argues purely for one or the other misses the point of variety!
William Machado just wanted to write exactly that 👍😄
@@compulsive_curiosity Of course, but this part stood out as a perfect example of what complexity coupled with great musicality can achieve, even taken out of context and just heard on its own, this part still shines as an incredible and mature musical statement. Obviously this section is creating tension that will be resolved with the drop, Brooks understands that and enhanced the tension to its absolutely highest point before the 'drop', the drop wouldn't feel so good if the tension part wasn't so expertly done (and vice versa as you state), so both parts are working together.
