7:16 I saw lots of these teepees in Kanazawa last month, and many were very tall, especially in Kenrokuen Garden, where they were placed over the larger trees. The tree branches were attached to the teepees with rope, to prevent the branches from snapping under the weight of the heavy snow.
great video john. i always like seeing the lesser known parts of japan. also, regarding the lack of snow, we're seeing it everywhere. here in toronto it's 5C today in the end of january which is unheard of. it's usually -5C at this point. we've only had snow once this winter
It brings back my memories when I was IUJ student. Thanks for visiting Urasa station, John. Hope you can explore Minamiuonuma and share any interesting experiences with us 😊
Been to MinamiOunoma years ago. They have great nice onsens and a large dam/lake with a paddle wheel boat to explore it. The long and narrow and very wet tunnels when driving there are scary if you are claustrophobic.
Another great upload. I have been watching a load of Japanese news stuff about heavy snow, it seems a lot snow but it seems to be melting quickly due the warmer weather.
Tx John you remind me of my experiences during 1992-94 in Urasa. If not wrong, Urasa station is built to commemorate the late Prime Minister Kakue Tanaka. Also to facilitate the existence of International University of Japan where graduate students from all over the world gather.
Awesome video, we’ll be in yuzawa on March 18, my wife from Nagoya says there is a naked man festival in her area as well not sure when. Thanks for all the updates. Aloha
It must be tough for some of the venders to make money. Hey John, approximately how many miles is Japan from 1 end to the opposite end and also what is the width? How long does it take to drive these distances as well? I love your video’s showing us around. I would love to get around with someone who takes people around and show them the sights.Thank you. All over the streets it looks so clean. No trash!
38 hour drive, 2760km, Cape Soya to Southern Kagoshima main island but when you say Japan, you mean the islands? Territory? It goes out super far. Google: Minami Torishima 😳 🏝️it’s not an easy question to answer because it’s not a square or circle but this wiki gives you an idea: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_extreme_points_of_Japan
It's four hours coast-to-coast by bus from Japan Sea (Niigata) to the Pacific Ocean (Sendai). I did that trip. Two hours by Shinkansen. California is slightly bigger than Japan. If you want to go North to Hokkaido (Hakodate), that's 4 hours on the Tohoku Line. Going South, to Nagoya, under two hours on the Tokaido Line. From there, you can proceed to Hiroshima via Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, change to the Sanyo Line to go all the way to Kagoshima in Kyushu, all within 8 hours on the Shinkansen. -René
Five too many! Hahaha! I have to hire camera help - can’t film myself - but it’s a GO after today’s meetings. So lucky to have locals allow me to join their group!
I voluntarily took cold showers for about three years, not freezing water but summer and winter so, I mean, they say cold water immersion has the same adrenaline effect as cocaine but it lasts for maybe 8 times longer so, it's not horrible and it is also good for immune boosting...
This is my favorite type of Only in Japan Go video, where John shows us around places that are obscure, or off-the-beaten-path.

A group of crows is a murder of crows.
Part house,part studio,part coffee cafe
Will there be snow between 19 Feb - 29 Feb ?
Can you show the older parts like hills of nagasaki, little edo?
@12:25 杉玉 Yes, you are in Niigata for sure.
Unusual for the station staff to outnumber the number of customers.
25:45 Hilarious
If Leo comes, perhaps don't do the usual screaming from the cold.
