That really kind of you to do this for people that’s the type of influence I like from you being a creator but I wish you could fix my ktm but I’m from pa but keep up the good work this is awesome
Your a good man. Be sure to emphasize to them after all the work gets done that regular oil changes & air filter changes/cleaning are a must! Ppl must maintain there machines.
I have been watching a lot of your Vids and while I do enjoy them! Watching you tear apart the Engines is killing me! First Always Clean The Bike/Quad after all the plastics, tanks are removed and before you take apart the engine, you Do Not want any dirt falling down into the engine while it's apart, bumping into wires and cables all covered in dirt as you pull the head and cylinder up dirt is going down. Unless you are doing a engine out of the frame rebuild and are going to run the whole engine in a parts cleaner as you go. When building or rebuilding engines Being Clean is one of the biggest parts of it!
I have to agree with you here. I seen as Joe flipped the valve cover it dropped some dirt in motor. Any dirt can kill an engine RIGHT NOW!! But I honestly have to give Joe the props for his selfless act here. I always enjoy the videos. Thanks Joe and keep it up🍻
You have two types of rings. Hard rings, and soft rings. Soft rings wear out and need replaced often. Where hard rings wear the bore and when replacing is needed it’s due to the ring being out of tension. Which means it’s wore out the bore and now needs machined larger to repair. Most stuff like this use low tension rings. Mainly for bore wear resistance. Get more life out of the engine in exchange for ring replacement here and there… Awesome that your helping someone out! 👍
@@louishall1731 no. He's saying there is less bore wear on these bikes, in exchange for more ring replacements. 440 kit is fun, but doesn't fix the rings needing replaced after however many hours.
Right....check the ridge ware ant then go from there......looks to be a ring and valve lapping job....first thing i was taught to check was the "ridge" on a cylinder??? Could be wrong.....but a good place to start???
11:45 I’ve said it before Joe, when you have bolts like those going into aluminum give the bolts a smack with a hammer first. It helps shock them free. It’s even easier when there is a washer built into the head of the bolt as you can put a deep socket on there first & hit the socket.
Hey man that's a pretty cool thing you're doing by making this repair out of your own pocket. This is the kind of thing that all of your subscribers are going to appreciate. I've only been watching your channel for about 6-8 months and I really enjoy it. I'll be sure to be watching it get finished. Thanks again for your time and videos.
Man joe, you are an extremely supportive youtuber. Cant wait for a suzuki quadrunner video. If I were you I would keep that and turn it into a nice tow rig.
@@Davido50 I believe it. When I got mine the people before me put it together wrong, the rings had been installed wrong and the valve rockers were backwards. But hey it still somehow ran.
Something you may already know but, you can tap on the top of the bolt head a couple times and it can knock it loose for easier removal. PB Blaster can help too lol You rock tho Brother for helping them! Be safe :)
I have a Honda Foreman 400 it was my best friends he passed away a month ago his wife gave it to me and we always rode together with it when I had my quads I sold all of mine to buy a house and he was left alone the ride it kind of starts and runs pull start only it has absolutely no brakes whatsoever and the exhaust the muffler inside collapsed so we had a undo the drain plug on the bottom of the muffler for it to run been watching you for a couple years now and if you're interested I live near Antioch Illinois it would do a good justice in memory of him
Why not learn to fox it if you have time to watch these videos you can watch videos on how to fix the thing it would be better for you to personally fix it rather than someone else they are easy to work on
On most overhead cam atv and bike engines have the rockerbox/valvecover holding the camshaft down so it’s really best to remove the timing chain tensioner before removing the valve cover and I always hit mine with a pressure washer before taking the engine apart to keep from dropping dirt and mud down into the engine dirt and grime will cause premature bearing wear and valve seat damage and just cause all kinds of avoidable problems 10 minutes of clean is cheaper than replacing a bunch of expensive parts and FYI that’s a cool thing you are doing for this kid man 👍👍.
Dude, Wow I'm impressed, that is a totally selfless move. I'm a bit taken back by this vidja in the best of ways. Hey man glad you're giving back, but go order yourself the Honda specific spark plug socket 🤘. I bought one when I got my first 400ex and it fits most Hondas without pulling and valve covers or anything haha
I missed my 400. It was a stock 2000 and I got it in early 2002 for $3300. I was 15y.o almost 16 and just sold my 1995 Rm 125 that I had since 12 yrs old to help pay for a quad whenever a good deal came along constantly checking eBay and my local newspaper. I was impatient and wanted any crappy thing I found and my dad kept saying nope to the couple quads we looked at and told me to just chill. Two days later there it was 2000 Honda 400ex $3500obo 30miles away in Algonac Mi. That machine was meant for me and I beat that thing to death and it took everything I gave it and never had to fix anything because nothing ever broke. Sold it for $2750 to pay for my first car.My aunt and her bf at the time had the exact same one and year since brand new off the truck and really beat that quad to death for 16years and she finally sold it for 850$ and also never had to do anything to that but replace bent rims a time or two. Sorry for the rambling.
When you took the valve cover off you rotated it and dumped all the sand right into the engine! 14:14 Also a plugged air filter which you have could very well be the only reason it smokes, creates a vacuum in the crankcase and oil is drawn up through the piston rings: Need to change that before tearing the engine down
What a luckey subscriber! Love the 400 ex quad. I have a carb related issue with mine xr400 (same engine) in last build video i show the problem does someone know what it can be?

Check the "ridge" on the cylinder......then go from there, looks to be a valve lapping and ring job.....but that far into a job??? Might as well do a full too end with chain and guides as well????
Your youtube channel can be your resume. Bet you could charge a fair amount to mechanic up the bikes around you. Hope future mechanics show what they do to repair vehicles. 🔥💪
I would just do a wisco stock bore piston and sum new valve seals and she should be fine change the oil and spark plug wire brush those valve stems and hopefully she doesnt smoke
Man, please clean the valve cover off before you remove it. I'd get a microfiber and a rag, or an air compressor to blow and clean some of the gunk off.
