I like how he is always ahead of the project like with parts etc before giving us the video!!!
Same
With as much rebuilding as you do I can't believe you don't have a flat sanding block to mate all your surfaces
How can you assemble all parts covered in dirt ? Head is also very dirty inside full od old oil and mud. As a mechanic you should clean everything before assembly
Very true, he should consider getting a parts washer and a vapor hone
Or you could just let him do what he wants
Like how you break in new parts by revving the piss out of it
Just what I was thinking 🤔
You didn't know the harder you Rev it the quicker it breaks in? Ronnie Mac full open throttle with new piston is always the way to go ☆
Have a cry
Everyone doesn't do it the same way. Some ride them first like they will be riding them. Nothing wrong with that. Some do the up and down steep hills move and some ride them easy. Different ways of doing it.
So much for break in lol😁
Ride it like you stole it man! Balls out!
I couldn't find part 3, I'm interested in part 3 and how the cheap parts fold up if you don't mind.
Dig this one can't wait for the real test you give it👍🏼👍🏼
I'm currently rebuilding my 03 400 as well , gunna use the Niche 440 Kit ,getting everything powder coated and cleaned first tho and gotta order a JEHonda Swingarm bolt ...
I rebuilt my 300ex with a Niche kit almost a year ago now and it's been running fine no complains 🤙🏾
I did a niche kit on my yz80 and kx100. Kx blew after 30 hours yz needed to be changed after 70 hours. They are nice kits to finish off the season while you get the oem cylinder repaired or replated
great job my bro keep the videos coming don't have much time these days but as a young rider I would walk my dirt bike down our street to the woods to ride at 5 am and spent most of my free time tweeking my bikes. I was 9 yrs old at the time and now I'm 50 but my heart still wants to work on dirt rides love it.
You do an excellent job on these old bikes, quad’s Joe !! Great work buddy !!
Awsome idea to test the rigidity and durability of these parts! Always looking forward to watching your videos!
Amazing videos been watching for years I just don't get why you still don't do break in procedures after working on so many diffrent bikes and quads like is the full throttle method something you've developed love the new house and land tho super happy for you hope I achieve what you have someday
Couple warm ups then ride it how you'd ride it lol
All break in ways not the same for everyone. Different ways of doing it and everyone has their specific reasons for their method🤷🏿♂️.
Sounds good. Maybe the best sounding quad so far!!
I like watching your videos, especially when you assemble the top end & elaborate on where the marks are & how to set them up,& your good at taking close ups where it’s important to note settings & view crucial internal working parts, you have good knowledge & have helped me to be able to possibly take on a job like that in the future where as normally I wouldn’t, so thanks for what you do & posting your content for all of us viewers.👍🏼
The 400ex have valve cover cam cover into 1 unit with 4 inspection caps. Once you remove the cap screw thread then you did see thru the hole. In the hole is the valve adjustment nut with the rocker arm stud. The rocker arm stud has the slotted on the top for screwdriver adjusting the valve. The bottom of the stud is a rounding face and it touch the valve stem. The rounding face is about 1 foot radius to 3 foot radius. The rocker arm have two nuts for each rocker arm tip stud except the Honda motorcycle that uses just one nut type 2. The middle rocker arm main stud goes with the upper half circle under the hex lock nut. The end of the rocker arm has a smaller stud for the adjustment.
Type 2 is tighter fitting together of stud and nut. Type 1 is more loose fitting together of hex nut and bolt.
The engine could have been swap to the 2000 ad trim of fenders and gas tank and seat as an improvement overall to make NightHawk more modern than ATV 400ex. Let the Nighthawk have 400cc instead of 450cc because Nighthawk have automatic tranny. The Hawk tranny have 6 gears for the Nighthawk speedy 7 gears is an upgrade choice the selection of the CR 450cc. The invention of the lobe cam that push the valve into open, finally the valve spring with lock keys retainer closes the valve. But the invention is more modern in the USA building the valve spring is gone so that the cam lobe closes the valve. The seal of the valve seat would be draw with draft paper to allow the hydraulic lifter to be add to my invention of the seesaw rocker arm. The Ducati motor have the idea similar to my invention. I didn't know anything about the Ducati so it is invention by my own idea because I did not copy-cat the Ducati Desmodromic Valve-spring free system of the cylinder head like my design on my papers 16 inch by 12in. that I drew a piston and the two-stroke crankcase and 1/2 cutaway jug example view of the air-cool and the fin should add the cylinder that it way it cools off of the 375cc from it. The drawing show the 4 inch bore x 3.75in. which is still a true 770cc one cylinder motor bike but no frame. Frame is where the motor mounts on it.
The piston rod is 6.5 inches that I drew it for draft. But usually, I could pick all aluminum silicon forge piston rod from the Honda Dealer in San Pablo Boulevard. For a price on the 5 inch piston rod. In 1999 ad, the hole at the bottom that I drew it. The hole is more modern now, for the rod journal was 1.6 to 1.7 inch Outside diameter but the available in stock is the Honda 1.438"
The 500 four sports motorcycle that I have seen it in northern California. The 750cc four cylinders was available for two tailpipes on both sides or one side tail pipe choices. The 4 into one collector 2 1/2 inch hole exhaust chromy chrome.
500cc four cylinder Honda motor for snowmobiole or ATV is hard to find 500cc four.
In 1998, the carburetor is connect to the crankshaft case for 2 stroke type that I drew it; is perfect design. The carburetor is connect to the 400 twin Yamaha cylinder is their design in Japan of the type two-stroke. The why the carburetor must be likely to connect to the crankshaft below the cylinder. where the carburetor show at behind the cylinder. The two in one crankshaft that one for piston reciprocating and one for blower. The blower sucks in the air fuel mixture from the carburetor. The flow of air fuel mixture along with counter-clockwise crankshaft in the view where one sees the right side of the engine. There the mixture coming out through the elbow pipe place on the crankshaft case in front of the cylinder. The elbow intake runner helps the flow fuel air mixture back to the cylinder - Plain tipo two-stroke.
Been here sense the beginning, just noticed he’s been working with the same gloves forever😂 love you man keep up the great work
Great video! Your videos are always very helpful, especially for those of us who are not super skilled in mechanical issues. Looking forward to seeing the ride on this machine. Thanks again for your time today.
Nice video and nice quad, thanks
This guy makes me so nervous running machines for so long with garage door closed 😂
That thing is beautiful, very shiny, nice.
aye man, keep up the amazing videos!
After a rebuild dont wrap the throttle right away .steady rpm for break in
He knows that, he just wants to thrash this quad so who gives a shit
@@ryanw724 what are you his mom ?
@@Effecenity6942 Have a cry
Chain is perfect Joe, keep rocking!! Loose lifters a bit, no problem.
Loved the video and concept, should help me as I continue to work on and maintain my newly purchased 2001 400ex. More OEM 400ex videos please, Thank you!
shot a lil baby flame at 28:17
**@ **28:18** ** Nice lil flame 😁
When seating new rings best is to let idle until its up to operating temp. Then ride it hard in like 3rd gear slowly accelerating from the bottom of the gear up to the top. Then let off the throttle and let the compression force the rings to seat. Do this several times bringing it up to top speed in 3rd then letting it decelerate to the bottom of the gear. I used to do this on semi’s too it always worked great
great job! in a future video it would be cool to see where you buy parts and how you choose.
i have a 1994 yamaha 400 kodiak i put on new niche cylinder and piston and rings 3 years ago it has been rode pretty hard and still runs like the day i put the kit on it === great video
Used the Niche standard pistons and rings on my RZR 800 build and was happy with the products... Great Job and do a Side by Side if you get a chance...
28:15 clean exaust pop xD
Good job on the build joe thing sounds sweet and looks fast hopefully it holds up on the next test you give it think the new neighbours love you already hahaha take care man awesome 👍🔧🔧🔧👌
I have an 07 400ex with a mean tick. Supposedly valves got adjusted but it’s still there. Makes me wanna try and fix on my own but I’m not to mechanical inclined
Stock is 148main 38pilot. With that exhaust u have u would need a lot more than a 152. I run a 165 with a fmf power core 4
Tight because you pulled it out all the way!
Awsome video as always
Love the vids
The 400ex motor for it is OHC chain driven for worth 24 HP. For 400cc equals 24.4 CID.
The Hawk is OHC 400cc that has timing chain in between right side cylinder and left side cylinder.
The 400ex have the pipe hole diameter 5mm for oil pump pumping the motor oil up to the valve cover interior with the oil filter and the body and oil filter cover was attached to the lower crankshaft together so oil pump is on the right side of the engine into pressurize it up 40 PSI. The left side of the engine is the magneto drum with stator that I did replaced the alternator with the resistance 1000 Ohms for a circuit per pair of circuits. The 5th wire from the stator 8 coils is for magnetic pole. When the drum with its magnet coming closer to the magnetic pole that way it energize the ignition coil. Still the drum rotates - meaning the magnet came away from the magnetic pole - immediately, it fires the spark plug.
The oil capacity must be small for the oil pump to work efficiency. There two oil fill holes.
The oil inside the drum alternator can be separated away from the capacity of oil pump in right side.
The oil pump comes off from the grease shortening pump that no longer use for vax cleaning recirculation the hot oil.
The brand is Oil pump that have no brand but it is has model number or part number.
The Honda Hawk have the components so the stator is in the right side of the engine.
Ho Lee Chit interesting rebuild . Hope it doesn’t blow up and your on to the next vintage experiment in saving the older heritage machines .
Love these videos
Bra jobbat 😃
Cool so far cheap parts are working time will tell though. The choke can cut performance down if it come on.
So informative. Amazing vid. I just need to go get Daddy a 400ex or 450. LFG👊🏻
Way to go Joe! Keep it moist!
Good job.
Man you do such good work, why don't you buy a $3 bottle of purple power and clean those parts before u put them back together, your work would be flawless If you did...
Cool video, interested to see how long those parts last👍👍👍👍
Sweet nice ride.
i fined these interesting as i dont have that skill level and frankly i am too old at this stage of my life. great job and please have a great day
The flame at 28 min was cool shot out good foot and half lol
Sounds good
This is awesome
Could be the assembly lube and yes possibly the pipe to
Those Niche heads are pretty good. You can't go wrong with the mighty max battery either.I think you will be fairly suprised with the them. I have used those two parts on many builds but can't comment on the other parts.
i buy any brand battery the cheapest they all work fine, 30€ for a basic 12v 8ah battery of i dont know what brand have it for 3 years still goes strong even after not using the quad for 2 months
I heard from a few people that the niche heads are the way to go
Niche cylinders are hit and miss on the cylinder roundness from top to bottom, that's why you check em and machine them if necessary ✌🏿
trick i learned for starting these without cranking it over forever, the carb has accelerator pump, pump throttle 1-2 times prims motor usually starts first thing never used choke on mine since i figured this out
Excellent content! Maybe considering leaving links to the tools an parts you use!? Thanx!
i just did valves on a 400ex and i had to adjust them to the point that the feeler gauge would barley come out for them to stop making noise
Awesome video.....but they arnt cheap.....they are less expensive 👌
I like the other chain tensioners they have now that are not spring loaded
Thats a nice four wheeler
awesome videos
I've never seen someone turn an engine over with the clutch cover off like that pretty sweet
Even if it's fine after a couple of hours, doesn't mean the parts are fine. Needs more time. And when they do fail, will it be a castrophic failure that destroys your bottom and top ends? 🤔
Automatic timing chain tensioner's are known to fail,I have had atleast 3 fail on me,manual tensioner's are better but you have to maintain them in my opinion
The CR means CAFE Racer. But try this designation DB500AF with the 52 mm stroke so that there is room for 6 speed tranny in the dual case of common one piece body of lower engine. The dual means two component sets: one set is the internal of tranny and the second part is the crankshaft housing at the front of the complete aluminum case. Another word for housing is called main bearings includes rod bearings. The cam gear fix to the letter D shaft and then draft show the lob shaft is connect to the letter D shaft. As we work on the OHV where it is an extra 170cc that I never use it but now it's new I have bought it for 2022 high performance just like your Honda and my Hawk. The Hawk is bigger called 230cc up to 240cc max.
The valve seal is also called oil ring seal with diameter rubber hole 4mm x 24mm O.D. Rotax is made in China and we, the Chicago Gas Pneumatic Motorcycle will call the Stamping room for it to complete the making of valve stem's ring seal. I have to buy a pair of delivery and packing the need from Rato Air Cooled Engine company.
That spring he lost I also lost awhile back, i took apart a pen and used the spring and it worked for at least a year in my possession
Great video as always,PLEASE open the door when you fire up! I sound like your dad!
Great video is it normal to tick like that I just did a rebuild on mine and I was scared of the ticking sound
Valve seal smoke, not too bad!
Hi enjoyed your video, looks like to me those piston ring parts had to go through a few heat cycles so that the engine stop smoking. But the engine sounded really good looking forward to your next video
your supposed to use a screw driver and torque the bolts first on the chain tensioner then you let screw driver go and the cam chain tensioner will push itself out to the correct tension...
Yea that is what I did.
Who would have thought cheap parts on a 4 stroke = a 2 stroke😮
Hey they all smoke and tick right lol that's normal
Silicone both sides of gaskets oil both sides of o rings?
You seem to be keeping it real dude👍 At what point does making yt-videos become so profitable that you can buy random projects without thought to price of parts and the labour you put into them? Awesome channel!
Watch the Michael sabo channel if you want to see lots of parts and labor on a basket case.
@@dan2397102 Thanks, Cool channel👍
Does anyone know how to rebuild a rear shock? My raptor 350's one is shot
I cant tell if it's just the audio on this video but it sounds like its ticking a little to much.. could be a gide slapping?
Hey, 2vintage, what exhaust is on that?
Thats a nice one......Id keep the Game Wardens busy in The hunting clubs with that machine.
break it in at the first start please, especially with the cheap parts
best way to break in parts is to ride it normally, all different rpms at random. Been tested and proven already.
@@YetiShots best way to break in a engine is to fully warm it up and cool it down 3 times then ride it medium never should run something normally right after a rebuild
3 heat cycles First one or two u go half throttle 3rd one u got half to full but not staying full Then it’s broke it to go full throttle
Have a cry
That’s the point of the video
good
Hows it holding up
The pin and spring is not necesary for a stock engine or a modified engine. The starter has plenty of power to turn the engine over.
Neighbour gonna love you!!
Oh I'm sure they do lol
Great work as always Joe very enjoyable to watch
Recently got a Honda 300ex because watching your videos I’ve become a Honda guy got rid of my Yamaha thought it just needed a carb clean I’ve bypassed the reverse safety switch and cleaned the carb but it’s slow to rev out or it won’t rev out at all like it’s hitting the limiter but then it will rev out after playing with the throttle and smokes a bit think it’s running rich any ideas ?
damn i wish you could try a trx300ex with a big bore 330kit those are 100$ i wanna try that on my adly 300 (same as the honda trx30ex) but also its my main quad so i dont wanna take it appart... and its hard to find anything about those kits... one guy on a french forum but like he just said he installed it had to shave some part of the engine to fit it and it ran great but no news after a year...
im debating on doing a high compression piston or try the cheap big bore kit (same price just more work to install the big bore kit) i wanna boost a bit my adly 300 it runs great but a bit more dont hurt and no clue how many km the piston has
I wish i had a quad like this so bad
How long did the niche kit last 😮
I know 400EX's tick naturally but that thing is LOUD!
Could you look at my can am DS 650 for me
Valve stem seals
Hey Joe...I the past few weeks I've been on the search for a 400ex and started to watch youtube videos about them and your videos came up quite often. I got hooked on them and now I'm a subscriber of yours... As I started watching more I figured out by the video of you picking up the 250r in green Bay that you must be relatively close to me, I live in Fond du lac, my name is Brian. You wouldn't by chance know of a nice 400ex for sale would you? Would like to talk to you about it if possible. Thanks...
did you check the oil it may have just burnt it all up
Some cheap parts are better than expensive parts
wrong... cheap Chinese stuff falls apart and is junk. you NEVER PUT cheap parts inside a engine unless you want to destroy it on purpose
Only some
😂 how is cheaper parts better 🤦♂️
I used the caltric mechanical seal, tie rods, and sprocket. Zero issues and tbh since my quad is an 86 lt250r this Chinese shit is probably better than oem as far as small minor parts I kid you not. So far its fine and I can't forsee any problems my coolant system doesn't leak from the weep hole metal isn't super soft or hard an brittle. Some shit can be cheap but ngl caltric is the cheapest ill go. It's all Chinese i kno but caltric comes in pretty clutch if your penny pinching just don't buy anything major.
Do you ever work on side by sides?
Where did all the snow go
Nice bro, im really interested to see how the nieshe cylinder kit holds up. Keep these coming. I love watching your video's.
Are those cheap cylinders of ebay and good
