- This rendition of this old English folk song is on Steve & Ruth Smith's Winter/Christmas CD "An Appalachian Winter" available at www.steveandruth.com Steve and Ruth Smith are a duo from Western North Carolina near Boone who play a blend of Celtic Appalachian traditional and original music.
Being a bluegrass guitar player, I admit I never paid much attention to the hammered dulcimer, until we had a baby and began being exposed to tunes like this one on the various baby soothing devices. Being also a vinyl collector, I started looking for folk records and found a few hammered dulcimer albums. Turns out our little guy LOVES the sound of it. I'm considering buying a dulcimer, as it seem like a good instrument to get children started on making music. We still have some time, since he's only five months now. :-) Your version here is stunningly beautiful.
Lol, I'm a flatpicker and I haven't had a baby. Good stuff!
My parents said I wouldn't fall asleep as a baby unless they played Greensleeves for me as a lullaby. I still love it! It is really wonderful played on a dulcimer. When I was 8 years old my parents bought a piano and I immediately sat down and learned to play, so parents play music early and often to your babies.
I had similar experience with my grandson at the age of a couple of months. I would play some very basic stuff and he would seem to go into a trance. It was indeed quite remarkable. Cheers
that's awesome! Music runs in the family it seems!
What toys play hammered dulcimer and if so, can you please tell me since you claim your child listens to it in the form of a noise device. I agree with your points on hammered dulcimer--there is not enough and it needs to change.
Just beautiful! I love the song, and together you played it masterfully! I am enchanted with the hammered dulcimer.🙂🎶
You may be correct that the couple played masterfully but is the relationship masterful?
Thank you for warming my heart on this Christmas Eve. It was truly beautiful. Merry Christmas
It is no longer Christmas Eve and I hope you had a merry Christmas, despite no one replying.
Omgoodness! That’s so …Exquisite! I love that song and that’s the most beautiful rendition of Green sleeves I’ve ever heard! Thank you for sharing! I subscribed because I’d love to hear more! Do you have dvds?? Happy Holidays to you and yours!❤
I would try CDs over DVDs.
@@KyleCote-j8i I know you’re right!😂🤣😂🤣😂 that’s what I get for trying to do three things at once!!😳😱👍
Absolutely beautiful! God bless you and keep you in his loving kindness!
Gently done with expression and sensitivity!
Gentle, indeed, despite Hammered Dulcimer being an aggressive title and percussion instrument.
I don't know why youtube shows me a 13 year old video but I am happy to be here!
I envy you two. To be able to be this talented together is something Special..
Beautiful sound. That’s one of my favorite songs. And I love the room!
I can think of many better rooms they could have played in--The Met.
I play multiple instruments by ear and life is always fun. That’s why we play❤
Finally! The version of the song I was searching for! Exactly perfect! Thank you!
Did you happen to listen to the thousands of versions before deciding that this version is the version?
Beautiful
Wow!! Absolutely beautiful! Bravo! Best rendition I've ever heard. Maybe it is the delicacy of the dulcimer paired up with that glorious Martin. Wonderful playing of a none too easy instrument. Thank you so very much for putting this up. Made my week!
Greensleeves might be the best most beautiful song ever written! ❤
That was a great session. Probably one of my favorite.
EXCELLENT! Nicely done. I'm an amateur HD player in east Tennessee, does Ruth give lessons?
Love this song and the beautiful playing in their nice home. Happy New Year to all!
Is it nice?
The very 1st time I heard this lovely song (supposedly composed by Henry VIII) was at our annual Summer primary school concert in the sunny garden of Lyndhurst vicarage in the New Forest when it was sung by the class above mine in 1953 when I was 8. The rest of the class performed a living tableau based on the famous 1878 painting titled "And when did you last see your father?" in which a Roundhead tribunal interrogate the young son of a Cavalier while his mother and young siblings look on. I've loved it ever since that far off time.
I would buy any christmas album you two produced.
As long as it has hammered dulcimer. Who is playing hammered dulcimer, here? Is it Ruth or Steve?
This is the best recommendation I've gotten in years
I have always loved both guitar and hammered dulcimer. Thank you for a truly lovely rendition.
How often is it that we hear the blessings of sound that occur between a guitar and hammered dulcimer, friend?
Love this song! My favorite so far with all of the instruments I have seen you play so far!!!
How many others did you see them play and were they as good? Do you have a wide spectrum of music experience? I ask so that you can explain with credibility why it is that you find this sequence of instrumental fanfare so alluring--so special. Thank you.
Beautiful.
Thank you for sharing 😊
OmG love it I've been looking for this one played on a hammered dulcimer ❤😊...Thank You kindly
Been playing this every Christmas for at least ten years now.
We love y'all, Merry Christmas Steve and Ruth🎸💝✌🏼

Awesome! Makes me wanna grab my guitar and head on over . . .
Эта флейта такая необычная и классная. Ты классно исполнила эту мелодию.
Ah Yes, written by Heny VIII for his dear love Ann Boleyn who he had her head chopped off.😂True love.
Wonderful! Beautiful!
If the wives of Henry VIII had played to him like that they wouldn't have lost their heads. KAN
Very beautiful!! greets from Belgium! Like to here mor of you two! ;-)

Something that finally slows my adhd down 😂
I took a workshop from you this summer in Evart, Michigan, you inspire me beyond words, I only wish I were closer to take lessons from you. Merci beaucoup!
Hard to believe that Henry the Eigth wrote this for Anne Boleyn! Orifinally titled "Greensleeves" (Henry referred to Anne as Greensleeves (although I can't find any documented reason why!!!)
@markfoor4137 For those that believe that Henry VIII composed, played, & sang this song for Anne Boleyn, the 'greensleeves' refers to the color of the dress sleeves Anne was wearing when he met her in the Royal Gallery (at his palace in Richmond?) upon her return from her father-imposed exile in France. For a time, green was - purportedly - Anne's 'signature' color and she wore it often. Later, of course, her signature color switched to black & silver which were Henry's preferred colors.
Side Note: Others believe Greensleeves was composed by Thomas Tallis (Henry's Court Composer), or Philip Van Wilder (Henry's Keeper of the Instruments), or even Mark Smeaton who was a newcomer to Henry's court shortly after Anne arrived from France. It's difficult to say because Henry was indeed very musically talented in his own right. In addition to composing numerous works himself, he worked closely with Tallis and Van Wilder - and others - on numerous religious and secular compositions. You can Google a discography of Henry VIII's music to see just how many!
One more FYI: I gleaned the info I've shared RE: Anne's wardrobe from a book called 'The Politics of Anne Boleyn's Wardrobe' or something along those lines (it's been a very long time since I've read/studied that book that I've forgotten the exact title..... Apologies!)
Beautiful and blissful. Thank you ❤🎼
Oh so Beautiful! Gives me the chills! Thank-you for sharing!
So beautifully played! I could listen to it all night, it makes me want to drag mine out and start playing again.❤️
Do you really have a dulcimer or is this just fantasy? If so, what is it made out of and how long are the dimensions?
Fabulous ! Brings back Great Memories , especially over the holidays....Love Your Style , and Your Frontroom...
This was so beautiful!
I wonder how In The Bleak Midwinter would sound on the hammered dulcimer. The first time I heard it I thought it might be a 500 year old carol because the melody reminded me of Greenesleeves. I imagine it would be beautiful as well.

How many bridges does that dulcimer have? It has 3 bridges, right? Who made that dulcimer?

Need a song to stir up your Anglo-Norman blood? Greensleeves, it be, m'lord.

Would you be able to play Elvis's Jail House Rock on the dulcimer? :D
Why would you want to do that???
This is so beautiful, listening to it gave me goosebumps.
My god.... I wept
Just beautiful. My favourite piece of classical music.
And Steve has a wonderful full guitar backup that so adds to the music...

I first heard this tune as the theme in the cinerama version of How The West was Won. Fell in love with it and that was in the early '60's.
I first heard this tune on The Rifleman sung by Mark (who was played by Johnny Crawford) and I fell in love with it too
Beautiful! Thanks.
Another brilliant version, thankyou so much for posting it.
