Paul Simon is the short dark headed man who is one of the greatest songwriters of the 60's and 70's.
Art Garfunkel is the tall blond and was considered the greatest tenor of that era.
They are Jewish men who went to school together and began singing together while they were in high school.
When my uncle returned home from Vietnam, he bought me an album of theirs and I and a friend would lay out in the sun and play that album an entire hot Alabama summer.
They are considered folk music.
I am nearing 68 and they are in they are in their 80's
Great story. Thanks for that.
I grew up listening to Simon & Garfunkel & had a lot of their records. Absolutely loved them & their harmonies. You won't find a bad song. They have had so many hits such as "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Sound Of Silence", "Mrs. Robinson", "Scarborough Fair", "At The Zoo", "Cecilia", "America", "I Am A Rock", "El Condor Pasa" etc. Paul Simon went on to have a huge solo career with lots of great songs.
Good choices, all.
The Everly Brothers get credit as a huge influence. I can hear them in S&G's hrmonies a lot.
"Me and Julio" is one of my little family's favorite Paul Simon songs
Even though I’m a millennial I grew up on them too cause my parents are old hippies. Lol. Paul Simon is such a poetic powerhouse. He’s always been one of my favorite song writers ever. I have “but the fighter still remains” tattooed. That whole verse is so deep and has only become more meaningful as I’ve gotten older. I think that verse and the one in America that goes “Kathy, I’m lost, I said, though I knew she was sleeping, I’m empty and aching and I don’t know why.” tie for my favorite verses he’s written overall.
The Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel....the soundtrack of my teen years.....
Love when that Tuba comes in at the end.
More from Simon and Garfunkel: Sounds of Silence, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Mrs. Robinson, Kathy’s Song, America, Homeward Bound, Scarborough Fair, For Emily Wherever I May Find Her…
They were great together. Most of their music was very thought provoking and deep
Beautiful harmonies
The instrumental break in the middle was a pedal steel guitar doubled with a piccolo trumpet. They were recorded at different times in different locations, but synced together perfectly. The pedal steel guitar was recorded in the studio. The piccolo trumpet was recorded in a chapel on the campus of Columbia University.
Is there also a bass harmonica?
@@marenehanson5526 yes
Paul Simon actually wrote The Sound of Silence, which everyone seems to be covering now. They came along near the end of the Folk Song era and are still favorites of many of us silver-haired folks lol. Thanks for reacting to this one, it’s always been a favorite of mine.
The low growly sound is a bass harmonica, and the high sound during the instrumental is a piccolo trumpet.
And the high string sound at the end is a mellotron, very often used in The Moody Blues music...
Paul Simon - lead vocals, acoustic guitar
Art Garfunkel - lead vocals
Fred Carter Jr. - electric and acoustic guitars, Dobro
Curly Chalker - pedal steel guitar, piccolo trumpet
Charlie McCoy - bass harmonica
Joe Osborn - bass
Hal Blaine - drums, congas
This is the original group for Sound of Silence. Bridge Over Troubled Water, I Am A Rock....so many great songs!!
I am really surprised that you havent heard any songs of Simon and Garfunfkel. I love their songs beautiful harmonies, lyrics . The present generation is missing a lot of beautiful music. I am happythat you are discovering them. How about discovering Jim Croce ?
Their music sure stood the test of time.
Somehow, their music never gets old.
The shorter guy is Paul Simon, the other is Art Garfunkel. Paul Simon is one of the most prolific poets of the 60s, 70s and 80s.
So happy to hear you listening to Simon & Garfunkel. A lot of amazing songs that deserve to be heard. ❤
Your first time!!!! You poor deprived man. Liston to ALL of their songs and your ears will thank you. They make me proud to say l grew up in their neighborhood.
The entire album is fire.
Both Simon and Garfunkel are native to New York. On the first Saturday Night Live show after the attacks of 9/11 Paul Simon performed this song with about a dozen members of the New York Police and Fire Departments standing behind him, in uniforms still dirty from that day. It was probably the most powerful and poignant thing I've ever watched on television. There's a youtube vid of it worth checking out.
That was a full orchestra in the background there. Sounded like tubas or trombones.
I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel, they are my heart and soul. Thanks for the reaction.
I LOVE this song. What a wonderful blast from the past. Simon and Garfunkle was a folk music duo that were so much more than just folk singers! Check out Paul Simon's "Stranded in a Limousine", "Me and Julio", and "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes".
Check out their live performance of this song at their central park concert in New York...you'll gonna enjoy their performance for sure...
This genre is typically called Folk, though that covers a lot of music types. This is by far my favorite Simon & Garfunkel. The instrument is a flute (also popular in many folk songs), but also the entire orchestra behind them. Both played multiple instruments, tho I believe they usually played guitars in performances. The guys harmonized so well together! Pity they had a falling out, but at least their music lives on. Glad to see you enjoying yourself so much!
The booming sound was achieved by playing a drum set by an opened door elevator shaft.
Actually, it is a piccolo trumpet.
@@ljwilson55 yes. But the crashing sound is from a drum.
Huh, I've seen him play both, but thought this version was his bass flute. Thanks for clarification.
My absolute favourite from this inimitable duo. What makes this track so much more special, is that Paul Simon appeared on Saturday Night Live a day or so after 9/11 and performed The Boxer, dedicating it to the people of New York City............Such a beautifully emotive masterpiece.
Both MUST HEAR Classics,, Simon & Garfunkel "A Hazy Shade Of Winter" & "Homeward Bound"
I have never forgotten the first time I heard 'The Sound of Silence'. That song is a real experience. The Boxer, and Bridge Over Troubled Water, too. Just such amazing songs. Not the sort of songs you listen to and then forget.
Great reaction to this brilliant song.
Thank you. Simon and Garfunkel were incredible and legend. I had all their albums and listened to them constantly.
One of the greatest albums of all time. You would do yourself a favor by listening to the entire recording.
The "genre" of this performance is 'real music'.
Hard to believe this song is 54 years old. Their Live in Central Park is prob their best live performance to check out. Their masterpieces are: this song, "The Sounds of Silence," and "Bridge Over Troubled Water." In my humble opinion, there’s no such thing as a bad Simon & Garfunkel song.
They were great! Bridge Over Troubled Water is one of my favorites! Great choice!
They have so many great songs. Dive in.☮️❤️☮️
"Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "Sound Of Silence are their best and most well known songs.
*Definitely do their biggest hit, "BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER," next*
I loved your reaction to this. It is a beautiful song
One of my favorite groups. Paul Simon continues in his solo career. Check out The Concert in Central Park. That concert contains so many of their classics. It was a wonderful moment in time.
When I opened the page and saw what you would react to, I was so excited; so many of my younger days have these songs running through them. Disturbed recentish song *Sound of Silence* is one of Simon and Garfunkel's repertoire. Listen to every one of their songs; off the top of my head, I can offer *I Am A Rock* *Bookends* *Scarborough Fair*, and listen to their Concert in Central Park for live performances. You might want to listen to some James Taylor, Carol King, and Carly Simon, different flavors from the same time, all singer/songwriters.
Hey AB❣️don't forget that they did the original "sounds of silence", that you did of 'Disturbed' 😁
Love SAG...
Paul Simon's solo album GRACELAND is one of the best ever... combining his skill with a lot of African musicians.
Love this. Simon and Garfunkel are so very awesome! Love your reaction!
Paul Simon. Genius.
The low grumbly buzzing sound is something called a bass harmonica.
So great your reaction to them they were so good!
The booming sounds are the reverberations of the glove hitting the boxer's head. That's a kettle drum, I believe. The low drone sound at the end comes from cellos, again I think.
Listen to Bridge Over Troubled Waters, considered by many to be the most beautiful song ever done.
your dancing had me in tears😂
Kudos for exploring other music. But it's sort of sad how so many of the newer generations have no idea about music with deep lyrics, instruments other than guitar and drums, harmony, etc.
Their harmonies were magical, and Paul’s lyrics are epic. For fun, check out Cecilia!
When you see their live offerings without all the over the top production you really can feel the power of their words
Art Garfunkel ( the tall blond ) is the lead singer. Paul Simon is the musician and song writer of all their songs.
Love how you listen to music!!!
The amazing instrument in the middle is a theramin. Very unique.
A timeless classic, from 1970
Their comeback Concert in Central Park drew over 500,000 people...
Bridge over troubled water. Studio version. You will love it!!!
AB I love your reactions. You are so real 🤗
I love & enjoy your reactions AB !!! God Bless You & Yours !!!
Please react to Simon and Garfunkel live singing Bridge over troubled water!! It's so beautiful it causes goosebumps every time!!
They wrote the original Sound of Silenced made famous by Chris Stapleton, must watch next
These guys have a lot of hits together & as solo artists as well. Paul Simon is the little one & Art Garfunkel is the tall one with curly hair. I have a challenge for you. Watch their original song 'Sound of silence', then watch Pentatonix perform it & then watch Disturbs version. It is a great song & they all sound totally different while all being awesome. Disturb's version is the biggest difference from the others. All really cool & I would love to hear your take on the three.
I made the same request, but I forgot about the Pentatonix rendition! Seconding that, too
Peter Hollens and Tim Foust did a version as well.
And Geoff Castellucci just released a cover a few days ago.
the sound of silance
I was just wondering if I should mention it, so Star Wars it is. Paul was once married to Princess Leia. Carrie Fisher and Paul Simon were husband and wife 1983-1984.
If you like good movies and good music, watch "The Graduate". It not only won Academy Awards, it has Simon & Garfunkel front to back. One of their most iconic "Mrs. Robinson" written exclusively for The Graduate.
Amazing piece of trivia! Had to double-check it it's so interesting... thanks for sharing that.
That song won't leave you now. It's one of those.
OMG, I needed this video so much right now, and I knew it was coming as soon as you said "new artist."
You have to do "The Sound Of Silence" (+ the Disturbed cover version), and Cecelia, then but then I'm gonna try to lure you over to Paul Simon's solo career. Graceland is one of the greatest albums of all time.
This is rock, just not rock and roll. The genius of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. They used lots of different techniques and instruments to get these sounds. Every thing they recorded was great. I painted lyrics of their songs on my walls when I was a teenager.
These guys are an institution. They made absolutely phenomenal songs together. Paul Simon, the dark haired one, went on to have a very successful solo career. Please react to Paul Simons, original video, You Can Call Me Al. Keep in mind, Paul is the short dark haired one. He’s the singer.
“Bridge Over Troubled Water”, “I Am A Rock”, and “The Sound of Silence” - studio versions please. 💜💕💜💕💜💕
Thank you for listening to the words. These songs matter on what they say. Story telling is almost a lost art now.
Simon and Garfunkel definitely 60s folk music. They were great. Disturbed did a cover to their original Sound of Silence. Worth checking out both versions very different.
They used a full orchestra. They have been around since the 60's and the 70's.
Paul Simons album Graceland is a true masterpiece
Many great songs. Suggest Bridge Over Troubled Water next. Great meaning to song, brilliant vocal performance by Art Garfunkel. For fantastic live performance, listen to it from the Concert at Central Park. The studio version will give you the full orchestration. Love your enthusiasm.
A clinic in harmonizing!
Sound of silence, bridge over troubled waters, many great songs, these two did, check them out, check out the live performances from the free concert in Central Park. I believe it was 1980.
Just for fun, check out "Baby Driver" - same album. A surprising 'ear floss' at the end.
timeless.
Great man, keep up the good stuff. I was 20 yrs old when this came out in 1969.
Bass harmonica - the same instrument used in the theme to Sanford and Son
It's 🔥 to me too❤
A true masterpiece!
They are classic, just spend 12 bucks and order their greatest hits on CD.
I was 22 when this was released, we had a stereogram in a sideboard, they were all the rage then, high end, I didn't like the Boxer much, mainly the other songs on the LP the lala at the end, I thought went on too long and spoiled the song.
I've got a phone and ear buds now and it's like a completely different song, the orchestra and tuba especially at the end where the orchestra goes from one ear to the other is beautiful, and this in 1969.
Completely changed it for me at 76 years old, a masterpiece...
You have also seen them in “we are the world “ they were in the group of people
You need to go find their album Concert in Central Park all hits Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel
Bars on bars, an American institution!!!!
Hazy Shade of Winter. Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel are the OGs of folk/rock/mix along with with Bob Dylan. Garfunkel sings the high notes. Simon sings mid range.
Back when they made real music!
More from Simon and Garfunkel: "Scarborough Faire" & "The Sound Of Silence" (there's a phenomenal cover of this one by Disturbed--do both.)
Disturbed did a cover of there most famous song "Sound of Silence". And a great job with it. Bridge Over Troubled Water is another one of S&Gs hits.
You’ve heard of them, or a song at least. They did Sound of Silence 😊
Cecilia...short and shocking
She was Jenny. In 1992 in London, as I, painfully, recall...:)
I'm sure you are going to get many recommendations on Simon and Garfunkel, well here's mine. Sounds of Silence, Bridge over troubled water, Scarborough fair.
Paul Simon was the lead in the duo as he wrote the songs. They broke up after a while. Paul Simon continued his career. There are two videos. Here's a link to a live concert called Graceland. ua-cam.com/video/0VTcBO4q5kY/v-deo.html
Unless I'm mistaken the alien instrument you hear is actually a picollo trumpet
I think you've done Paul Simon's song, "You can call me Al", with Chevy Chase.
They wrote "Sounds of Silence". Their version is mellow like this. You have already heard Pentatonix's version, which is more intense (for lack of a better word). If you are into comparing videos, you could look at those two and Disturbed's version which is angry. Very different takes on the same song.
There biggest hit is Sound of Silence.
Listen to their classic hit "Sound of Silence", then listen to the cover by Disturbed. Awesome song writing, message and performance - in both instances.
