Algonquin Park 5 Day Solo Canoe Camping | Part 1 | Catch & Cook Brook Trout

  • In mid June I set off for 5 days into Algonquin Park's backcountry on a solo canoe trip. During peak bug season I traveled many kilometres on this canoe trip in Algonquin Park. On my first day I came across a cow moose feeding in the water and on my second day I caught a brook trout which I cooked over a fire. This was an awesome trip with hot sunny weather.

      @@AleconAdventures I’ll check it out for sure. I just finished Temagami, and Mattawa river trips. Next month I’ll be doing smaller trips and few big ones for fall. Do you mostly trip in the park?

    • @AleconAdventures
      @AleconAdventures  Рік тому +1

      Temagami is great and I paddled the Mattawa when I was a teenager, lots of history on that river. I live close to Algonquin so it's convenient and a beautiful park with tons of route options. I paddled the lower Madawaska river a few weeks ago and I'm heading to the NWT for a big trip this summer. Lots of adventures to come!

    Loving your channel my friend! I am wondering what tent you have? I love that it has a ridge line and no poles. Just throw a tarp over if its rainy and you're golden. Thanks!

    • @AleconAdventures
      @AleconAdventures  3 роки тому +1

      Hey bud, I was using a mesh tent from OneTigris. I'm not sure if they make it anymore. MSR makes a similar tent that's probably better quality but you'll pay more for it. It's an awesome tent design that's lightweight and offers a full view of the night sky with no tarp. Thanks for following the channel!

    • @AleconAdventures
      @AleconAdventures  3 роки тому +1

      It seemed like one of the best bang for buck cameras when I purchased it. I considered the A6600 but for the extra cost you only get added built-in stabilization which I heard wasn't too good. For less than the difference between the two cameras, I picked up a gimbal for stabilized handheld shots instead.

    Found your channel just recently. Watched your last Algonquin Trip and loved it. Pulled out my Jeff's map to follow you on this one. Damn, you make some distance! I've been to Algonquin many times over the last 30 yrs. and never pushed that much in a single day. I encountered a moose close to where you did when I paddled between Proulx and Little Crow. And you ended on Shangra-La island if I'm not mistaken, one of my favorite campsites in the park. I pulled out my little flask like yours and had a swig of good bourbon with you. Looking forward to watching the rest. Thanks for the memories

      Hey Paul, welcome to the channel. I do like to push myself on solo canoe trips in Algonquin. I like to cover the most distance possible and see new areas. It would be nice to take a long summer canoe trip but that's possible with my work schedule. The Crow River between Proulx and Little Crow is indeed a wildlife hotspot. I've come across a few moose and one bear along that stretch of the river. You are correct I did stay on that island and it's a lovely campsite. I'm happy to hear this video brought back some memories. Thanks for watching!

    That’s a good trip even with those black fly’s and your music was perfect. Just rub a downy sheet on your hands and jacket area and the black fly’s won’t enter those spots. Thanks

    Very nice video! Always enjoy the fishing/camping combo. What brand of portage pack do you use and how do you like it?

    • @AleconAdventures
      @AleconAdventures  4 роки тому

      I was using my Sealline Pro Pack on this trip. If you're looking for a waterproof canoe pack it's your best option in my opinion. There are cheaper options but the sealline will last longer.

  • @JacobPhillipsOutdoors

    Really enjoyed that Alec. Would love some more info on your trolling rod setup. Looking for a canoe packable combo and interested what brand you chose and your experience with it. Do you consistently target a depth with the line counter or does it vary? Thoughts on using lead core?

    • @AleconAdventures
      @AleconAdventures  4 роки тому +1

      I use an Okuma Magda Pro reel, it was the cheapest trolling reel I could find at the time. It's nothing fancy but it gets the job done. The rod is a 5ft Cabelas leadcore rod and it works well. The time of year and species I'm fishing dictates the target depth. I never use the line counter because I use leadcore which changes colours every 10 yards. You can tell how deep you're trolling by how many colours are in the water, your speed and the type of lure you're using. I like leadcore because it follows the path of your boat. There are other options for trolling deep in a canoe, you can also use steel line or a dipsy diver.

    How do you store / keep the trout during the day after cleaned to keep it fresh for dinner?!?

    • @AleconAdventures
      @AleconAdventures  4 роки тому +1

      Try to insulate the fish if possible and keep it out of the direct sun. On this trip I just put it in a ziploc bag, inside a dry bag and buried in the middle of my pack.
