- Easily one of the most discussed projects among fellow letterers and calligraphers. How do you make your wood signs?! What pen is that?! I share a few of my tips in the video. After 5 years of trial and error and experimenting, this is my go to method for creating calligraphy on wood signs.
1. Sand the wood, well.
2. Paint or Stain the wood. I use regular craft acrylic from the hobby store and Minwax brand stains.
3. Draft your piece with a pencil and/or chalk.
4. Letter using brush calligraphy with a paint brush (on rough surfaces like pallet wood), or a paint pen like shown in the video (my go to for crisp consistent lines).
5. Buff and clean off pencil/chalk marks.
6. I do not seal my wood signs. I did originally and found it unnecessary and caused coloring on the signs.
You don’t need a fancy machine to make a beautiful sign. If you are not comfortable doing freehand calligraphy and lettering, you could easily print out your word/saying and use a carbon transfer sheet to outline the design.

This is beautiful. I love your idea . Easier and nicer than I thought it would be. Thank you for the ideas and suggestions
Thank you Pearl! I need to do an updated wood project soon. Stay tuned!
Hi its very pretty !. Since im new to this . Could you please tell me if you apply a coat of varnish or polish after lettering so that it does not fade or peel in the future. ?
I don’t need to seal these when I use a posca, it is very durable. If I feel necessary, I would want to use a spray sealant rather than brush on, as it will smear your work!
@@simplyletteredstudio210 that's very helpful. I might be using another paint pen( acrylic ) or a marker .so in that case which sealant would you suggest ?
@ednamarbaniang3249 a Polycrylic spray usually works fine for me!
@@simplyletteredstudio210 thanks a lot !. Appreciate your help ! 😊
