    Beautiful fish and tank. You mentioned that you wish that you'd built it even larger because your fish keep growing. Perhaps you could try fish that don't get quite so large. Discus are amazing fish & they max out at about 7-8" in diameter. They are considered difficult to care for, but you obviously have the skills to give them the correct water conditions. A nice size school of them would love such a roomy tank.

    The easy way to get rid of worries about the seams is to laminate the plywood into two layers, staggering the layers. IOW, it would take 4 pieces of plywood to make a 16 foot long tank (let's call them sheets A, B C and D). Sheets A and B but up against each other. Sheet C goes dead center on the seam of sheets A and B. Sheet D gets cut it in half and fills the spaces to the left and right of sheet C. Since you solidly glue up the laminated sheets with epoxy, and use fiberglass to cover the seams, no water can seep between the sheets and the sheets support each other.

    Love the aquarium!
    A question, would it be cheaper to buy 2 or 3 glass panels instead of one?
    Sure, the window look might not be first choice, but if it's cheaper and reduce blind spots at the edges and bottom it would be worth it.

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  14 днів тому

      Thanks, It depends on where you get your glass from. The main driver of the cost is the thickness, so the smaller windows would still be very expensive and I think it would add up to more $

  • @flashy5150
    @flashy5150 Рік тому +1

    Why don’t you put gravel in the bottom until it reaches the glass, so you don’t have any fish hiding from you .. or will that add too much weight in the bottom for the plywood to hold ? I do love your choice of fish in that tank, especially the Speckled Peacock Bass, awesome fish. I used to have a Jaguar Cichlid way back in the 1980’s, I never knew the name of it back then, I won it at a fish auction lol

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  Рік тому

      Thanks, that would be a ton of substrate till fill up 9 inches in this tank so cost with be insane, I don't think weight would be an issue since the tank is pretty much sitting on the floor but I imagine it would collect a tone of waste too

    • @flashy5150
      @flashy5150 Рік тому

      @@dwsdarius If you build a “sub-floor” in the bottom of the tank, then you would only need a little substrate. Build it from something that doesn’t float and glue it on the bottom and sides of the tank. If you don’t know what a “sub-floor” is, look it up, it’s used in house building too.

    Hmmm... Can't you leave the plant filters as they are, and get a canister filter for the 330 tank. Disconnect the small tank from the plant system? And leave the rest where it is?

    • @bubblerings

    So I’m preparing to build my 850gal tank this week. Finally sweet talked the wife into it 😂. Tank will be just a tad smaller than yours. I’m adding a second window on the side tho for better visibility. So I’m comparing my build to yours. The glass panel u used is that 3/4” annealed or tempered glass?

    • @dwsdarius

      Sounds awesome! Mine has 3/4" tempered glass

    • @ryanryans3438
      @ryanryans3438 2 роки тому

      @@dwsdarius 👍 🙏 for the response. U did get a steal on that glass! Everyone has to be a rookie when it comes to a monster tank build @ least once. I toyed with making a 900gal with 1/2” tempered glass. Upon further research it seems a guy should still stick to the same thickness rules as annealed glass. Not going with the tempered glass. Think I’d need 3/4”-1” tempered glass to be safe. Picked up a 3/4” 350gal tank of a dude on Facebook a while back. Was going to sell it to me w/acrylic 150gal sump, 2” steel stand, & tank for $2k. The seller dropped it while loading. Chipped the bottom glass bad on 1 corner but the rest was fine. So I got it all for $600😜. Going to double up the glass on the 900gal 4’x8’x56”Deep for the front & (1) side. Think I’ll add (1) vertical brace in the front to help reduce & break up the water weight load on the glass. I’ll take pics & see how it turns out. Will turn out epic or be an epic failure. 😂

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  2 роки тому

      @@ryanryans3438 My glass definitely was a steal. Just take your time with your build, that glass is very heavy so slow and steady is the way to go. Sounds like your method will be very sturdy so it should turn out epic

      @@dwsdarius Hello sir.. I wanted to revisit you and this vodeo and say that Ive actually decided to downsize my 1000g maintank to a 404g maintank. ( 8ft x 3ft x 26inches water ) I was looking at a few changes I want to make with new build and thought of this video. I have stockman overflows in current tank and decide to do 2 seperate 1800gph slimline overflows. That will have the floor of tank clear of any piping and Im gonna change my drain.. I have a 1 inch pipe inside of tank, going down near bottom. It goes over the back wall and down to a valve at back window for draining out into yard. Im gonna have a bulkhead at 4 inches above tank floor with valve, just below that and then going out same back opening into yard. Wanting to nearly eliminate any piping inside tank. Then, Im gonna run spraybars at each side of tank, right through top back of tank so thats only piping inside tank. Agreed about energy usage and water usage. Downsizing will reduce both by more than half. I will still use the 210g sump Im using now, but maybe a few tweaks for more ease. Finally, Im looking into a small solar system to accommodate all power needs for the fishroom. Take care !

      That way you could add more filtration and at the same time raise the bottom.

    Bruh u need a pond not a tank. They look amazing but a 2 foot fish in an 8 foot tank doesnt sound like a lot of space. Nextproject swimming pool size pond 😅
