So, they've been 'together' 16 years and he won't allow OP to leave a trace of herself in their home (either financially or in decor), he bought a ring specifically to shut her up, and proposed just to shut his friends up. Honestly, he hit the jackpot with OP. She's treating the man like a god and he's actively trying to pretend she doesn't exist until she's necessary. Yikes.

He was using her financially while also abusing her emotionally... I hope she can see these signs going forward with any relationship in the future. Sad part is if she hadn't left he would have done this till the house is paid off or longer. I think he didn't just want to seem like he was single but he knew he would move in the mistress when he dumped her (maybe even at the alter...) and didn't want to do the work twice so he wanted to leave it a blank space for "them"...

Know the absolute worst thing? She helps hold up that stereotype that if you treat a woman poorly, she stays more interested and eager to please. I mean you hope to hell that this is an exception and not a rule but damn, girl. It's 16 years. I can see waiting until after any post secondary but if it isn't moving forward by then? Give it up.

@@SailorMya But he wasn't using her financially. HE paid the mortgage, in his name, thinking that that would be enough for him to say the house was his. He played himself, because, as she said, she only bought groceries and paid some, not all, utilities for at least six years. So she gets half the value of the house for some food and utilities. Almost makes it worth the time she wasted with him after the house was purchased.

Monkey branching. You are in a serious relationship for a long time. You meet someone else and start thinking about them. However, you don't want to risk breaking up with your current SO just for someone who just met and how might not be a good partner. So you spend time with the other person, date, hookup, etc. After a year or two, then you are sure your new person is worth risking breaking up over. Except, now you have a problem of how to break up with you SO in a way that everyone doesn't find out you cheated, the breakup goes smoothly, you don't pay any financial price, etc. So, you stay together and try to torpedo your relationship so the other person ends it and leaves. Then you can claim that they left, were abusive, were cheating, etc. and then magically you have a new person.
OP's BF almost got away with it. Stall out the wedding until OP leaves and, if OP haven't come home, she (and everyone else) would probably be oblivious of the other woman.

He trained her from the very beginning.

He didn't want the side chick to know he had a live-in girlfriend. OP's next order of business needs to be telling his family that the relationship is done because he was cheating - because they'll ask why and, well, you can't just say 'We didn't work out' after more than a decade together. I reckon 2-3 years is the threshold to know if a relationship is ‘going somewhere’, especially if your both independent adults at the time of meeting. You can reasonably date for a year, maybe live together for a year, but beyond that, you’re essentially acting married without being so. So if marriage is important to you, my advice would be don’t feel like you have to settle for acting like you’re married with someone who doesn’t value the tradition, or isn’t interested in you as a spouse
