  • In this video I give you a full in depth review of a 2003 mazda speed protege'. It has a turbo 4 cylinder engine and a 5 speed manual transmission. Basically, it's not about what's to like about the but more about whats not to like. This car sucks on gas, which would be okay if it was fast. It is NOT a fast car. It is very slow and and more indicative of a four door family sedan (without the good gas mileage). A lot of kids like to street race these cars and put boost controllers on them but if you do then you will probably have a blown motor. The car handles great in the twisties and has a great sound system.

    It sounds like the MSP wasn't that car for you... No disrespect, but that wasn't really a review, it was more like a frustrated owner painstakingly pointing out every single thing that you didn't like about the car. You glossed over the car's strengths (good luck finding an FF that handles better than the Mazdaspeed Protege) and focused solely on it's weaknesses.
    And some of the stuff you pointed out was just odd. The car's gas mileage is pretty average. It's no hybrid, but it's mileage definitely isn't "bad". And the ergonomics... I'm 6'4 and was actually quite impressed with the car's ergonomics for the six years I drove it.

    The protege isn't going to beat every car on the track but it's definitely a great car to start out on. The only disappointment I have with it is it's not rear wheel drive :/

    This review was just awful. I recently bought this car, so I haven't had a lot of drive time on it (the previous owners wrecked the engine so I've been repairing it). It ran on 3 cylinders, so I'd call it a fighter! It shifts perfectly and is easy to drive. I love the location of the shifter knob. It is way closer to me than I am used to and moves easily through the gears (and I'm 5' 8"). I have been driving a 2000 mustang, and when I am in 1st, 3rd, or 5th I can easily reach the radio controls. So Voodoo8648, I'd like you to go drive one of those so you can appreciate this car more. Yes, there are issues with this model because the engine was not designed to work with a turbo, but if you know what you're doing it will work fine. I promise revving your engine is not going to ruin the engine. It does handle great, so he got that one right one! This car is also incredibly easy to work on! The starter and the alternator are hard to get to, but everything else seems relatively easy. I recently removed the engine head with no problems whatsoever. Like I said, I'm still trying to get it fixed up but so far I'm loving it!

    I owned a Mazdaspeed Protege back in 2008. It'd get 37mpg highway and 27mpg city. It was a fun little car, had plenty of get up and go!

    Your review was a decent one. While I can agree on certain points ie cup holders and reaching for the shifter, I have to disagree with others. I average 30 mpg with pretty aggressive driving, I find that to be great gas mileage for a turbo car. The car for a eco box, I find out comfortable, I'm 6 foot 2 two hundred pounds. As far as modifying it goes, it's like any other vehicle I've had. It depends on how much money you have to determine how fast you want to go.
    Msp is rated at 170 hp, while that isn't too great with some basic mods you can reach 200 wheel hp without compromising the engine or transmission. Which for a 2600 pound car is plenty fun.
    Overall I enjoy my msp and would recommend it to anyone.

    I must add more to the author of this video..The motors are not fragile..they are a good strong motor that needs very little maintenance. The cars corner with amazing grip.. that is the mazdas advantage while other cars are having to slow down in in a turn you can almost maintain your speed sometimes even accelerate once you feel the car is "bit" into the turn. Mazda are built and tested at Laguna SECA raceway. Even the minivans. So all mazdas are race inspired.

    2002 lx 5 speed . mine has great ac awsome heater shifts great , buzzed it up too 7500rpm many times. great handling stops great. 32 to 35 mpg that doesnt suck, goes 90 with ease,im sure it will go faster.change oil every 10k with full synthetic. 165k great car. get one ,drive it a while ,you will love it.

    That is a 2003 and a half model I had the 03 black mica for 5 years never had any real issues was a very tight and dependable little car and there were only 1500 made you've got a pretty rare car there

    This guy is just wrong. The engine is great. Mines got 138k and along with the turbo are factory original and push 10psi (3 over stock) yeah your gonna need some mods to get the go juice, but it's worth it to eat civics sentras and tiburons. I get 30 mpg on the highway. Make of that what you will, and if this joker bothered to google rice burner, he would know that the msp is pretty clean by comparison. I was excited to see an msp review since the cars are kinda unknown, but now I wish it would have been done by someone who knows about these cars and has driven one for more than a few months. Don't let him scare you away, these are great cars, and your not gonna find a cheaper modern turbo. Btw I'm not a kid, I'm 25

    i have one of these and it made 300hp on the dyno after upgrades ive been driving it for about a year and 1/2 now and never blew the engine

    You started by saying what's not to like and then went on complaining about almost everything. When new, this car got good 0-60 times for a sporty compact. If it's not accelerating well for you then either you don't know how to drive or there are some mechanical problems from years of abusive driving. 160 something HP on a 2600 lb car is very good numbers.

    I'm 6'3 and when i had my MSP I fit comfortably. The car is good on gas but that is partial on your driving skill in a manual car. Your plastic piping sucks you need to upgrade. I had a CAI Three inch piping and Magnaflow Exhaust andmong other mods, Boost up to 9 and ran it hard, the engine put up with a lot more than I expected Iy too. I love that car and would recommend it to track lovers that want a rare car.

      Truth. I'm around the same height and was actually very impressed with the ergonomics, especially compared to some of the larger cars I've been in.

    all i have done to mine is air intake system lowering springs coney yellows. and light weight rota rims with carbonfiberhood took it to the track maxed it out at 230kmh not bad for 170hp and just a air intake

    I love my speed and a fragile motor is a lie, I have easily north of 200hp running 15psi and it doesn't even hiccup....now if you take shit care of it well thats another story. Will agree the cup holders are shit, but this car is from the early 2000's and Japanese a large cup size then is closer to a medium now. But if you want a car that is fun to drive and has a peppy amount of power and is rare....Protegespeed

    just bought one for 600 and already have 800 in. i will say that this car is amazing for an autocross/track day beater. the handling is second to none, but don't ask what the car can't give! its a shitty econo box, this much is true, but the capabilities of this car in regards to handling is amazing. also, they are super cheap to work on and easy as well. i think the car is obviously a turd but for less then 1grand you can get a beater and have some good fun. reviews like this only make protege parts cheaper for us protege owners!

    I agree with you on certain points. The car does have flaws that makes it a rather bad daily driver. But it is a rather good 2nd car that you use for fun. I personally built a mazdaspeed protege from a bare shell but it is not my daily driver and is stored in the winter time. Its a innexpensive plateform on which you can learn. It dont drink much gas on the highway compared to my daily ('10 mazda 3) but in the city you always want to hit boost so that makes it drink a little more since these cars are notorious for running rich on boost to prevent engine damage. Also you mention the engines are not very good, that is true and wrong at the same time. You see the 2.0 FSDE engine came from the production line of the protege 2.0 non-turbo. It is pretty much the exact same thing, in fact i built my car using a non-turbo engine on which i installed a turbo. However it has some flaws that makes it a bad turbo engine because its not designed for it. There are big problems of crankcase pressure management, oil delivery and vacuum/boost routing that dont help its situation. Also there is a major problem of ring gap on the pistons which are not wide enough for high boost causing engine damage. When you know all those things you can work around them. My engine is making a lot of power on stock internals. Come have a look on my channel. you wiill see and hear the difference

    This is a perfect example of how NOT to do a review. 90% of this review is based on personal preference not fact. Granted personal preference does have a time and a place within a review. This review just comes off like someone who doesn’t quite understand what they bought.

    Lol I ran 12psi on the stock turbo on mine for about 20k miles and am onto a gt28 turbo at 7pbs now and it loves it. Stock motor. Stock MSP ecu. It rips. The key is maintenance and not banging it off the limiter. Not to mention mine gets about 30 miles per gallon.

    i will say the guy who had my yellow speed protege before me spent 20k on the engine itself. my car has 260 whp and has no problems at all. My car runs 25 on AVERAGE for gas. i fill ip my gas tank 1 time every 2 weeks and you make think its slow but mine will send you to gapplebees my boy. Also the engine is now built for 350whp and for a 2800 pound car. you seem to know very little about this car. You did not mention how you can indeed upgrade your turbo with a Garrett t28 turbocharger. I agree with the power put of the hole it is slow starting but any pull out of a hole you can rip your axel which i havd alrwady done bc mine also has 230 torque. The gear shifter is something that can be commonly replaced if your gonna complain about temperature. Its in a great spot very smooth and easy shift. only problem is my hand slips off. Also who drives with their right hand lol. Completely afternarket sound system. I agree with the cupholders that shit doo doo. I also have a stage 2 clutch and an after market dual fan intercooler with an after market cold air intake. also has a 3 inch straightpipe exhaust all the way through into a 4.5 inch tip

    You will have bushing issues and the factory kenwood head unit was awosome but the ribbon cable whent bad.

      Ribbon cables are cheap. Check out the soldering videos on youtube so you can fix it yourself.

    For one peso olé have made 265whp and similar tq. The mpg sucks because of the overly rich factory map. Real power is up to opinion. The car will beat the pants off a lot of cars on autocross. Tbe, fmic, boost controller and a split second a/f co triller gets you over 210 hp for under 700$

    fragile motor i have a 02 po5 with 75 shot of nos and have sprayed it over 20 times no tune stock motor and no problems 247k on it

    If the first mod you think of is boost controller you need to go back and do your homework grow up a little and realize thats the last thing you should think of doing, on top of that you don't need much to squeeze some power out of the car and better air flow should be at the top of your list you said intakes, exhaust, ect. make your car slower?! Just proves your slacking on your reading. For a daily driver its perfect not crazy fast not turtle slow a good 1,000 into upgrading your smic piping and a cai an you'll have yourself a peppy DD. Ive had mine for a few months now and it's never not started and I fill it once a week I commute to work 50 miles round trip 5-6 days a week and that's not including driving around town doing errands and I don't do speed limit either. Now correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that what you want from a DD reliability and decent gas mileage? If you wanted something fast you weren't looking for a DD but everyone has different opinions on what a DD should be to each there own. Your exhaust isn't stock if the tip doesn't say mazdaspeed on it that's why it sounds raspy and like crap and as far as calling the car "rice looking" I guess everyone is entitled to there own opinion mine is its far from it being that it comes like that from the factory and it's not over done at all in fact I find it very simple and in need of nothing on the outside if your biggest complaints are cup holders, lack of arm rest "unless you want to be gangster" (whatever that's suppose to mean) and lack of power the you should of read up on the car before you jumped in and realized you didn't like it what drew you to the car? The "rice look"? Anyways nice try I here consistency is the best thing for a successful UA-cam channel I hope you get better at the reviews not worse

    DUDE STFU!! MY PRO5 WOULD WHIP WHATEVER PIECE OF SHIT YOU THINK IS FAST. My Pro5 was putting out 150hp and would slap most cars and something is telling me this is a regular protege with no turbo because as fast as mine was N/A there's no way it's accelerating that slow, yours must be fucked up. I hear no turbo whistle, I've heard turbo whistle on a damn Chevy cruze. So either you got duped, can't drive, your cars fucked, or all of the above.

    easy to talk trash about a car you have no idea how to drive or build and what it is capable of. my 03 with stock internals slightly bigger turbo and other mods the car turns heads, an a lot of people that judge it only see my taillights at the end of the day

    I stopped right there cause it was boring... and please get the corrosion off your damn battery. For the car this was back in 2003.. they were pretty fast actually. The only competition it had was the srt4 which won in the battle cause they put a big front mount on it.. this was a limited numbered car which sold like hot cakes and till this day is still a clean lookin car. Put a couple bolt ons and ypu got a decent car in todays speed. Dont knock it cause u dont know how to drive it. And who the hell reviews a car that is 11 years old and over 100k miles? Most people do that with new items and give brief updates bout how they feel. If you want a fast ass car go buy a gtr or something

    the car is slow? our protege 5 will get on the interstate with no problem and its a stock 2.0L and those engines if you change the oil every 3k miles are great engines

    So why do they have a cult following? I have a Mazda Protege LX that sounds WAY BETTER than your MSP... perhaps you should address that drainage issue you’re having and spend some time realizing you may be the issue?

    okay not hatin on the video or anythin but this guy sounds really dumb yes i agree that u can not turn up boost on these cars STOCK because back in 03 they fit normal internials the mazdaspeed protege is a very reliable and cool looking car not many of these were made it has it downs like this guy says in the video but for the hp it ant bad at all 170hp it moves for the power jus cuz i own this car that is not the reason im hating and u would save gas as long as u dont hit boost a lot just like any car if u drive hittin boost a lot its going to waist a lot more gas mine is basically stock and ive beat civic b16a, chevy 1500 v8, and a dodge ram 1500 hemi plus a mazda 3. not bragging about this but just saying this car packs a punch for the hp if u want to turn up boost then simple get internials. maybe this guy just doesnt know how to drive it proper ?

    Niggaaaaa get a automatic car you complaining about shifting gears for 3 minutes and how much strength you need to shift a gear, niggaaaaa need no arm rest why do you need to rest your right arm when it should be on the shift knob,
    The car is 13 years old dead stock homie with 170HP on the engine and a lil bit more power from the turbo ofcourse its gonna be slow with all the modern cars on the road now
    Mine is heavily modded and bullies and everyone on the highway, the one thing that does suck is the transmission your bound to replace a transmission anytime around ~150k +-20k
    which should be 1 grand for the transmission and maybe 1 grand for the labor

    I'm with Voodoo8648 on this one. I own one. They look fast, and sound fast.... but aren't. I used to have a 2002 Subaru WRX.and compared to that. It's nothing. I did like the tight steering. Oh yeah... it's FWD so that kinda kills it completely

    Obviously you dont know how to drive it I have a protege5 NA and hit 60 in second gear. The motors on thoes cars are not as fragile as you think. Id be ashamed of myself posting a video saying the protege speed is slow. So Obviously ypu dont know how to drive or you have a car that has been abused in the past and not maintained. I eat hondas and some mustangs all day with mine.

      Saying your car can hit 60 in second is not a big deal lol do some research. 1st gen 5speed Dodge Neons can hit 60 in second. Thats mainly just gear ratios, and has barely anything to do with driving skill. Hitting 60 in second with a manual, HOW-TO: Shift into first... accelerate hard. Shift into second at the redline... accelerate to 60. I agree with you though, it is possible the car was previously abused, and so it's performance could quite possibly suffer for that reason.
      Next, eating a Mustang/Honda doesn't mean much to me. Eating a real mustang (5spd GT and greater)/an actual professionally built Honda would get my attention if they're REALLY racing you. I think what he mainly meant by "not that fast" was this: compared to other cars that compare with the claims Mazda made about this car, it's not all that fast. Mazda marketed this car in a segment that was kinda awkward. The regular Protege competed with the normal FWD Lancer, but the Mazdaspeed then should be comparable to an Evo... except no... maybe it was basically made to try to provide a lower market alternative to the more expensive Evo or STi? The problem was it's performance was just too weak to be compared. So okay, maybe it was aimed at other 4-door pocket rockets, like the Neon SRT4 or the Sentra SE-R? Well, that' a closer market, but an SRT4 would annihilate it and the closer Sentra still outmatched it by like 30 hp. Sure its probably a hoot to drive and compared to most normal cars of its day, probably did well for itself. I've never personally driven one, just heard about them from people, and they seem to be QUICK, but not FAST. Everything is relative.
      Personally I think they look cool, and its unique to be cruising a MSP. Also note, he did his research before saying that the engine was not the strongest. Basically the opinion he stated was that of people who own these cars, as he got his opinion from a forum, not from experience. I mean, you can make anything fast for money. I'm sure you could reinforce this little 2.0L and boost it all to pieces and make crazy power, at which point, spend the next 6 grand making it rear wheel drive lol but the average guy isn't gonna put that kind of money and work into a car like this. It takes a special enthusiast, and a special cult to be interested in doing all that. And I think that's what everyone here needs to just chill and realize: this is a cool, interesting cult-classic. To those who aren't in the cult, this car just doesn't have the balls. To those in that cult, this is one of their priceless sports cars.

      Sykohtic dude the evo was cheaper built than the mazda protege 5. In 2002 I was considering on purchasing an evo lancer until I test drove it. The interior was crappy the seats uncomfortable the car had a lot of body roll. The car was built to look like it was a fast n furious car. When I test drove the 2002 protégé DX it was the base model I was super impressed. Even tho I am a mazda fan I was always more of a 626 and up type. The protégé always seemed like a cheap version of the 626 929. Btw I had a 1987 626 and she was quick. The protégé in a straight line is not the fastest but the car was built to corner. When I race people I get an advantage if there is a few curves. On a straight run I'll still keep up with Mustang GTs and that's saying a lot since they have 4 more cylinders on me and 3.0 more L. My DX was faster than my P5 I have now. But for a sports Wagon I'm impressed. Furthermore how can anyone compare high end modern cars to a 2002. In 2002 the protégé was top of the line along side of the WRX (yes I have driven that and yes it will sit your head back in your seat powerful car) and the Nissan and also MR2 (even i admit the MR2 of 2002 would smoke my DX. Don't know about the Pspeed) I have driven a lot of these cars..who do I have this experience? I not only fell in love with Mazdas products in 1995 I began working for mazda in 2002. When I bought my used P5 in 2014 I knew what parts to tune up instantly(replace) because I seen all the factor original parts that was soon to go out. Regular tune up stuff. And the 2002 dodge neon..piece of crap if you planned on running it hard..sorry it is a car ment to be good at regular driving. The Dodge dart...I think is a big step up and a better car I still think dodge is a crappy brand but the dart seems ok. Anyway my point was about getting to 60 in 2nd gear (maybe I should have been more clear) was even in second I'm not red lined I'm probably around 4.5 5 rims red line is at 6

      Sykohtic I have to say you are right Mazda protege speed was the answer to compare with the lancer, sentra type R, WRX. Protege speeds mistake..The faulty turbo in it. When it would fail it was bad and it wouldn't take much for that small turbo to fail. That's why I went with the DX in 2002 I wanted a base model so I could add what I wanted.

    Excellent review, objective and impartial. I have always loved the looks of these cars. But, they are mechanically problematic. The motor mounts, suspension bushings and limited slip differentials are all weak points. The cars themselves started off as Mazda Protege DX's and were taken to Callaway for customizing. So, the engines have the stock FS-DE internals. Hence the reason that the boost was set to 6.9 lbs. The base compression was not lowered to accommodate the turbo and the pistons/connecting rods are not strong enough to withstand higher boost. The engine really needs forged connecting rods. I think that the engine could probably handle up to 9 lbs of boost in the winter and 8 lbs in the summer, but, as the author stated, you are risking a bent rod, burnt piston or spun bearing. The stock exhaust from Racing Beat is excellent. I have no clue why so many goof balls change out the exhaust and install a cold air intake. Their cars sound like giant bumble bees on wheels. I really do wish that Mazda would have started out with Protege ES's instead of DX's because the ES's have moonroofs and cruise control. One thing to note is that 5th gear can be swapped for one with a lower ratio to lower the engine RPM at highway speeds. www.crossoverauto.com/crossovershop/index.php?main_page=products_all

    Number one, I am a dealer and Ive had hundreds of cars. I bought this car because I always wanted one....(till I got one.) While on my ongoing search for a good platform to build a race car, I discovered that this was not one of them; after having been on the Mazda forums.
    ...and the comments that you insecure people are making is the TOP reason that I don't want to be associated with this car, or you kind of people.
