I've worked in the electrical field for over 40 years. It amazes me the licensed and experienced electricians that can't wire up a 3 way switch..... I'm glad because I have been called out numerous times to fix a 3 way and it is money in the pocket...
In my experience, this is the least common configuration of the three-way switch but you did a great job in explaining the theory of how a three-way switch operates. Not sure why you used the excessively large #12 wire for lights but if I had one piece of advice, it would be to throw away those wago lever nuts. Teach your subscribers how to properly twist the conductors together and install wire nuts. The bulk of my electrical expertise is diagnostics and troubleshooting and I can tell you without a doubt that those 'quick connect' wiring solutions that homeowners find on the shelf at home Depot or other home centers are very prone to failure.
Great video, very informative. I've retired 3 years now after 40 plus years in mining. Half of it as millwright the other half as an electrician. And this presentation is about as easy to understand as any that I've been fortunate to learn and practice. Many of the wiring scenarios I've learned on were on lab set ups such as on this video. Great job👍😎
Nice😁 Whattya think of those wago's? If I don't make a twisted joint myself, I just don't have a good feeling about it. Kind of like wire nuts advising that you don't twist the wires. I get a of lighting issue calls and its mostly un-twisted pairs arcing inside of the wire nut from a bad connection. The directions don't mention that the wires would have to be absolutely perfect with no tension on either side to not have any problems. My edit was a misspelling. I wish UA-cam would stop putting up that edited notification
@@drekelley2352 I've only used them with factory lighting (luminaire) connections. Never like they're being used in the video. Haven't been on a job yet where they've been hanging around in bags to use.
I mentioned this in another comment, but they are excellent products. Once the lever nut is locked in you cannot pull it out without extreme force. These are not like the push in connectors, the locking lever secured the wire very tightly. Stupid easy to use and quick.
I've had to redo six 3 way switches. I've had to watch this video every single time! You'd think I'd be able to do it without this video by now! Thank you!
Just bought a house with an electrical system from the late 50s...and 80s...and now. Definitely needs some work and these videos have definitely helped increase my knowledge
I used the Wago connectors this weekend for the first time and I think they are the best thing. User friendly, reusable, easy to use, compact and I feel confident that I have a good connection
This is the best video of its type that clearly stated which wire should be the black common, which I have tried to find out. Thank you for this clarification.
FINALLY found the best 3 way switch vdo on the internet. I've watched 7-8 vdo's and your's is the most understandable and simple by far. The way you presented the layout was the magic. Didn't even need to use a graphic schematic layout. Thanks very much Mr Sparky.
I watched a few UA-cam channels on how to wire a 3-way switch, but I just liked the Sparky Channel's way the most. Thank you for sharing your experience and wish you a happy and healthy life.

I've seen a lot of very weird things in my career as well.
Best demonstration ever. thank you sir.
No problem, thanks!
i like those connectors.. i usually use nuts... Wago needs to pay you bc i just bought some bc of this video, thanks.
Wago doesn't pay me anything I just like them. Thanks!
Great job👍😎
Thanks Saul!
Pretty basic operation but excellent tutorial for new diyers. Glad to hear the term 'traveler wires' You make it so easy to follow, great job!
Thank you very much!
I agree. Mechanical connections are better. Wago makes u get phone calls
@@drekelley2352 I've only used them with factory lighting
(luminaire) connections.
@@aziltener Copy. Duly noted
Thank you for your videos. I have learned a lot, and it's really helped me out!
You're very welcome! Thanks Mike!
I once had to wire a chandelier with 15 switches. 13 4-ways and 2 3ways
It was at Parris island
Wow!
@@SparkyChannel I know right
I've had to redo six 3 way switches. I've had to watch this video every single time! You'd think I'd be able to do it without this video by now!
Thank you!
Glad it helped! Good job!
Just bought a house with an electrical system from the late 50s...and 80s...and now. Definitely needs some work and these videos have definitely helped increase my knowledge
Right on!
Well done sir. Thanks for sharing.
Who would give this video a thumbs down?? It's almost ridiculous to do that.
Thanks so much!
I didn't know that Scotty Kilmer was also an electrician.
LOL!
I used the Wago connectors this weekend for the first time and I think they are the best thing. User friendly, reusable, easy to use, compact and I feel confident that I have a good connection
Excellent!
This is the best video of its type that clearly stated which wire should be the black common, which I have tried to find out. Thank you for this clarification.
Great to hear, thanks!
U explain everything so cool that's thanks
Thanks Luis!
Flawless video!
Thanks so much Mitch!
Hey sparky. What if I wanted to add a dimmer? Could it be either switch?
Good question
Could it be both switches?
I believe it could be only one switch. My research shows either switch?
This is the best 3-way switch tutorial out there. I like the redundancy of bonding the boxes as well.
Thanks so much!
FINALLY found the best 3 way switch vdo on the internet. I've watched 7-8 vdo's and your's is the most understandable and simple by far. The way you presented the layout was the magic. Didn't even need to use a graphic schematic layout. Thanks very much Mr Sparky.
Thanks, Happy Holidays!
Best explanation ever. Thanks so much for the video
Glad it was helpful! Thanks!
A friend of mine was shocked when he found out I wasn’t a good electrician 😳
🤣
LOL!
Pretty sure this is scotty Kilmer just as an electrician
Rev up your receptacles! :)
I watched a few UA-cam channels on how to wire a 3-way switch, but I just liked the Sparky Channel's way the most. Thank you for sharing your experience and wish you a happy and healthy life.
Thanks and same to you!
Great video. I just graduated as an apprentice electrician. I learn more from videos like yours than in class.
That's awesome! Congratulations Mark!
Once I started using the WAGO connectors there was no going back to wire nuts.
I understand!
You are fantastic
Thank you so much 😀
Aren't you scottie Kilmer! Starting a new channel I see
OK, I admit it. LOL!
Welp, now I can't unhear this lol
I was thinking the same thing the entire video.
I am so fortunate to have stumbled upon this video! I had wired two dark bronze dining room switches, I thought, exactly as the old beige switches. However, one switch didn't work correctly . . . until today!!!!!! Others who posted are correct - you are an EXCELLENT teacher! I rewired the bronze switches (one with a dimmer) exactly as you instructed and, ta da!!!! They both work perfectly now!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you for helping me work through my problem!
Fantastic, good job Bruce! My pleasure, thanks!
