Guys I normally use all the exercises mentioned in the video to get a basic level of conversation before I try to speak to native speakers, such as speaking with a language exchange partner. Even though I start practicing with a language exchange partner, I still do these kinds of exercises in parallel. This video is meant to share my experience and give you inspiration. If you have any better methods or know of any useful apps, please share them with us in the comments. Much love!🥰🥰🥰
This is the first time I've seen a language youtuber differentiate between pronunciation and accent and not obsess with the latter, which is sooo refreshing to hear! In my opinion, bringing a foreign accent into a language only enriches it.
For Spanish, accents matter because it can be very different and your ears have to be trained for it. And it doesn’t hurt to speak the way you want. Actually everyone has an accent, it just depends on how it sounds.
As a native Cantonese speaker who’s also fluent in Mandarin and English, I am eager to explore and learn more languages. As of now I’m trying to learn Korean, Japanese by myself. Thank you Zoe for this wonderful video and sharing your tips to us. I’m sure I will benefit from this a lot.
Cool to hear from someone who is a “native” speaker of an Asian language interested in learning more languages in that region. (I’m sure it’s common. I just don’t often see them on English-speaking UA-cam or polyglot spaces!!) I’m an L1 English speaker and L2 Spanish speaker, currently trying to get a handle on Levantine and Egyptian Arabic. ✌️
This is perfect timing! I’m trying to learn Japanese and it’s been quite difficult but these tips seem so helpful so thank you and good luck to everyone else trying to learn a language. You’ve got this! 💜
This is the best video that I have ever seen in my life about learning languages. Here I found three fundamental pillars: clarity, depth, and sincerity.
Dear Zoe, your content is so helpful! Not only are you a talented polyglot, but you are definitely also a perfect narrator and influencer! You've inspired me so much on language learning! I'm really grateful for your work, especially for giving specific examples, your own methods and resources for mastering different languages. Sending you much love from Ukraine 🤗❤️ جزاكِ الله خيرًا 🌸
I'm a bit behind in catching up on your videos, but this is so motivational for me. I'm learning Korean and while I'm okay with speaking (as far as my beginner level allows) I struggle with listening comprehension. One, these tips are very helpful for listening AND speaking so I will try them. Two, the fact that you said three years ago you were afraid to speak English and now you are fluent enough to do these long videos really inspires me. Thank you!
Zoe! You have no idea how helpful this video is for people who are stuck between beginner and intermediate but don’t have language exchange partners or tutors. This video explained language shadow boxing so well and not in the generic “just copy the words” way but in a more meaningful learning experience way. Thank you so much!!
I've gotta hand it to you, you're like a UA-cam wizard! Seriously, your advice and study plans are magic. You've got a well-rounded knowledge on techniques and tips, and in a such strategical, succinct view, that my mind boggles at how perfect is your way of tackling language learning. It's flawless. Congratulations!

If you decide on “lernen” a new language like Russian or Spanish, or even a new Asian language like Japanese. “Lütfen” share your journey and study tips with us. You’re an inspiration. خداحافظ
I really enjoy your videos! Your suggestion of writing a list of words with difficult sounding letters is spot on! I used that technique when I taught my Spanish students to speak English better ... and you have reminded me to use the same technique for my current two target languages, Darija Moroccan Arabic and Spanish. Another top tip that I have used with my students is to pick an English song that they like and learn to sing it. It is a great education in pronunciation and accent building techniques. And singing in your target language is FUN!
I am impressed with your experience in learning different languages and the culture too. You learned a group of difficult languages as Arabic and it's different dialects.
Aww. Thank you so much Zoe. I am so happy to find you here today. I am a Chinese but I write English here cause I wanna practice my English as much as I can. I never thought a girl who speak foreigner languages will be so charming. You are my inspiration. As a Chinese i am so proud of you and myself. 💗💗🤗🤗 你太棒了

OMG!!! I'll try your tips for my English. I'm so confused when I have learned English speaking skills for several months. This video makes my way clearly. Thank you very much!
Um dos melhores métodos de ensino que já assisti aqui no UA-cam, era exatamente isso que estava procurando, obrigado por compartilhar seu conhecimento. I'm from Brazil, thank you so much
From my experience, I don't think you should learn all those languages at the same time, unless you know one on a intermediate level. I tried learning Portuguese and Spanish at the same time and I started confusing words between the two languages.
Thank you for these great tips. I also love how you showed examples for each. I have a partner who is Filipino and I'm really wanting to learn the language and also really wanted to get better in Korean as I love how the words and how the language sounds. I'm looking forward to doing these.
Some on You Tube found that 1 can use Korean Hangul to write Cantonese & Hokkien, at least. Tagalog has borrowed Hokkien dialect words more than Cantonese, Mandarin, etc.
If I'm not mistaken this is the 2nd or the 3rd time I've watched this video. your videos motivate me every time I watch them. I never get bored by rewatching them again and again ❤ Having finished it(this video), I wanna be even more consistent and speak more in English 🎉
Hi Zoe . I am Iranian and I felt happy when you said you are learning Persian . I wanna tell you keep your way and I hope we meet together oneday and speak Persian . ما ایرانیا خوشحال میشیم تو ایران ببینیمت :)

You're inspiring my life Zoe to be more confident and fighting to learning everyday. I love your strategys how to learn and how to be better. I have no idea, I've ran outta words to say. I love your video, I'm waiting for another video that you make every time. I hope you're always have time to help people in the world who felt strugling to learn languages. Thanks a lot.😘😘😇
Great advice Zoe. You were realistic about your language-learning journey and this encouraged me. I will try this technique and come back to give an update on my progress.
memrise is perfect because it teaches sentences and gives you audio by native speakers with video. I use it to learn portuguese and its really helped me alot
Thanks for the suggestions for Francais. One must devote time to practice even if it requires duplicating our efforts to oppose our planning. The context of one's efforts is revealed with study.
hi Zoe, well let me express what almost cuase me a heart attack ! first I've been trying to learn en for years ok I'm not gonna say every moment or day or even a week but there is persisting times and abasement!! but what i discovered lately that i been learing wrong not to mention lacking knowledge of great techniques and steps!!!!! that's a lot of wasing time but whatever what made me continue learing is my passionate and love that i have to the English language. During my studies , i was frustrated with the difficulties of reading text ,articles and listings so i made a huge effort to these two skills Reading and Listening so thanks to allah i now can easily understand context for both skills, after that I relieved ! but the enormous shock was when i wanted to speak my mind went blank , is seem I've no acknowledge to the language, so now I'm here watchig videos of improving speaking skills. As you can see i can reasonably write but I'm aware of my grammar mistakes not only grammar but the missing of using difficult and popular structures, idioms and phrasal verbs, because i haven't been practice nor using the language and when i use it with my friends , they don't correct me! i didn't bring the grammar subject, i was making huge effort of course to learn it but i hated it ! all because the confesion Qs .... then i heard a horrible person saying dont waste ur time on grammar even native have mistakes in grammar speciality so i take his words i count on him and u know the result...well in conclusion learing never ends it ends when ur life ends thank you ! i will appreciate if you response .
thank you so much. this is really helpful and i'll surly try this. i am learning french and turkish right now. i really like those two languages i am learning them for fun.
Zoe, this is a great video - so helpful. I saw your conversation with Steve Kaufmann about hardest languages - I agree with both of you about Arabic. I have been trying to learn it for a few years, and am very happy to see how well you speak it. مبروك، يا أختي
Bu zamana kadar izlediğim en etkili videoydu kesinlikle . Kendini ders çalışırken çekmen ve verdiğin ipuçları çok faydalı oldu . Teşekkürler Zoe Sağlıkla kal Loves from Turkey
Hey Zoe! I've been taking online lessons with native Mandarin teachers and watching UA-cam tutorials; I have two 1-hour lessons every weekend. This has been ongoing for 3 years and I now sometimes wake up realising I've been speaking Mandarin in my dreams - 完善 I began my Mandarin-learning experience listening to podcasts while driving a machine in the construction industry - getting paid to learn/maximizing time, right? 🤪 Thank you so much for your inspirational videos! They're amazing!! 🀄🎸🎷🤩
Hi dear i'm iranian and i stumbled across to your video and i'm being surprised that you know Persian . This is fascinating and i'm proud of you. To be fair i personality learned English by shadowing workout and i think it does the trick and not only it can be the best way to learn English but also it's the only way to build the accent that we want.thank you for the video and pls make more video. 🍃❤️
Brilliant content as always Zoe. I'm learning a local Philippine language called Hiligaynon (aka Ilonggo). There is only one decent app for learning, but its a beginner level app and I have already internalised all of the phrases it contains. So now I listen to a local Filipino radio station that does some rather amusing radio plays and puts them online for free. I often do this whilst fast walking on the treadmill at the gym with my headphones in. I mutter the words under my breath when imitating the speaker. I don't care if I look mad, most other people are also listening to thier headphones so they aren't bothered anyway. I listen and try to understand, rewind and listen again whilst repeating, and keep doing that until I've understood and pronounced each phrase well enough. I know it sounds strange. But I have ADHD, so I find sitting still and learning can be challenging. I also listen to music in Hiligaynon. I have found some music with lyrics on the screen, mostly rap (my favourite genre). I don't reccomend learning pronunciation from rap to others though. I know that in English, rappers often twist the syllables to make them rhyme- Eminem does that a lot. I suspect that's true for other languages' rap music also. Rap sounds great in Filipino languages, as Filipinos have this fast paced cadence when talking which is similar to rapping. Anyway, thanks for another great video. I look forward to the next one.
OMG I'm so glad I found someone with the same struggle as me! I'm learning Quechua, an official Peruvian language (it's also spoken in other countries though) and finding a learning app was a nightmare. I took some lessons, however it is too expensive to keep paying for those. So I have been listening to "Radio Amauta" which speaks Quechua. Also I checked some podcasts. It's so hard learning a language with almost no sources...however I think we will succeed doing so. Good luck !
@@kiaratouzett9910 Yes, learning a rare language is certainly difficult, but with perseverence it is achievable. One must think outside of the box to find and create learning material. I am learning Hiligaynon because it is my wifes mother tongue and I want to be able to integrate better into her family and friend group. For my main input I use the 'mass sentence method'/'sentence mining method'. I have gathered thousands of sentences and put them into Anki. I have around 11000 cards (many are double/two way cards). Most are sentences, some are single words, some are grammar points to remember and some are written dialogues. Every time I learn a new word, I look it up in the online Hiligaynon dictionary and take the example sentences, copy paste into Anki and drill them. I use the two way option for the more simple sentences, Hiligaynon-English and vice versa. For the more complex sentences and ones using the rare/archaic vocabulary and grammar formations I just use the one way Hiligaynon-English cards. I bought a Scanmarker pen from Amazon, it's a handheld scanning device. There were a couple of phrasebooks that I found on Amazon that weren't available in pdf format. So I scanned them into Anki. I have bought a book of poems that I will work on translating into English and will break it down into sentences and phrases soon, I will put it into Anki too. I have already done that with some song lyrics. There are a couple of proper textbooks for Hiligaynon but they were written in the 1970s, language changes a lot in 50 years. From the vocab I learned in those books I speak like my wifes grandfather. It's quite funny. An idea would be to try and see if there are any Mormons that have learned Quechua. They go on missions all around the world and learn rare languages to preach their religion to the locals. If you can find any contact details of a Mormon that has learned it, just reach out to them for advice on resources, they're usually quite friendly and kind people . The guy that wrote the only decent modern phrasebook and created the app for Hiligaynon is a Mormon. I emailed him as I found his details online and he sent me his database of phrases so I could easily put all 2000 into Anki. Thank you for your comment, I just looked up 'Quechua dictionary' on Google and found Globse, a dictionary full of example sentences. As well as Quechua, they also have Hiligaynon. But beware, it appears to be crowd-sourced so some of it may be wrong. But when you get to an intermediate level then you can usually sense when a sentence is wrong anyway. I need to go on italki and pay for a tutor, I'm just socially awkward and the thought of talking to someone I don't know over webcam is a bit daunting. I will get around to it, eventually. With my methods I have reached a solid intermediate level and have been learning for around 10 months. I do have some grounding in Tagalog though so that has helped me a lot to get my head around the grammar. We must keep pushing forward and we will achieve fluency. 💪
@@billyingles thanks for your tips! I currently use Qichwa dictionary and I had not thought of writing down sentences, only words. Also, I was unaware of the two-sides option in Anki. I knew it existed but not how it worked. I'll also look for books in main bookstores in my city. Yes ! I think there's a mormon church near my house (lucky me). I'll make some time and try to speak to some of them :) Wow, I'm happy to hear you've overcome difficulties and were succesfull with your language learning journey. Again, thanks for your tips. I'm 100% sure they'll be useful. Hopefully by the end of the year I'll be a B1 or B2 level 😁
@@kiaratouzett9910 The mass sentence method is good because learning words on their own out of context just doesn't work very well. Most words have more than one meaning. When learning whole sentences you see the word in each of the contexts that you will likely encounter them, and in the different tenses/focus aspects/grammatical formations. You have to really dig around online to find different resources, try searching Reddit and Quora to see if anyone has already asked about resources and if not then ask the question yourself. You have to do some detective work. But that's all part of the fun. Do you have any friends or family that speak the language? They can be a great resource too, but don't expect them to become your teacher, just use them for checking grammar points and checking your pronunciation, your translations etc. I'm lucky that I'm married to a native speaker of Hiligaynon, I test out my language skills on my wife. But she works hard in her job and doesn't want to have to come home to listen to her husband butchering her language every day, so I pick my moments. You're very welcome by the way, I'm glad that I could help. You will get to B1/B2 by the end of the year if you keep persevering.
@@billyingles Thanks ! You're right. A simple word has different meaning and applications. This new method you have talked about sounds very useful. I'll make sure to include it in my Anki cards :) I have never used Reddit. I did find a few webpages with readings in Quechua. I don't think they'll be enough though...I'll check both Reddit and Quora to find better resources. Not really 😔 I have one friend who is also learning the language so we practice together. But of course, we aren't able to make eachother the same corrections as a Quechua-native speaker.
I wanna learn Mandarin so bad but it sounds so hard to learn. I love Chinese people & i'm eager to communicate with them but unfortunately there aren't many English-speaking chinese friends out there. Much love & respect from Iran 🇮🇷 to China 🇨🇳 I wish to see you here soon, Zoe!

Always inspiring Zoe! 😌😌😌 Today an hour and a half for Chinese, an hour and a half for Japanese and an hour and a half for Korean. I'll get there! 😌
From my experience, I don't think you should learn all those languages at the same time, unless you know one on a intermediate level. I tried learning Portuguese and Spanish at the same time and I started confusing words between the two languages.
@@ihavenoname330 thanks but I don't confuse them as much. I'm starting to speak all these languages and pretty well. 😌
@@themessengersreport5041 oh that's great! You will soon be a polyglot! 😊
Your videos really motivats me to learn English and other languages,Thankyou so much,
Thank you for these great tips. I also love how you showed examples for each. I have a partner who is Filipino and I'm really wanting to learn the language and also really wanted to get better in Korean as I love how the words and how the language sounds. I'm looking forward to doing these.
Some on You Tube found that 1 can use Korean Hangul to write Cantonese & Hokkien, at
least. Tagalog has borrowed Hokkien dialect words more than
Cantonese, Mandarin, etc.
If I'm not mistaken this is the 2nd or the 3rd time I've watched this video. your videos motivate me every time I watch them. I never get bored by rewatching them again and again ❤ Having finished it(this video), I wanna be even more consistent and speak more in English 🎉
I just love your videos, they are SO helpful! Thank you :)
Thank you Zoe. Your videos are very so very particle and might save me thousands on the language courses.
10:17 Just you gotta take into account that the transcript might be wrong, since the autogenerated ones from UA-cam aren't perfect.

I'm struggling to learn a new language but I always wanna be immersed in the new things. So thank you profoundly because of making this video. ❤️❤️
Thank you, Zoe, for sharing your skills and experiences. You are not only smart but very pretty. Continued Success to you!

Hey Zoe! I've been taking online lessons with native Mandarin teachers and watching UA-cam tutorials; I have two 1-hour lessons every weekend. This has been ongoing for 3 years and I now sometimes wake up realising I've been speaking Mandarin in my dreams - 完善
I began my Mandarin-learning experience listening to podcasts while driving a machine in the construction industry - getting paid to learn/maximizing time, right? 🤪
Thank you so much for your inspirational videos! They're amazing!! 🀄🎸🎷🤩

Good luck !

Yes, learning a rare language is certainly difficult, but with perseverence it is achievable.
I'll make some time and try to speak to some of them :)
Wow, I'm happy to hear you've overcome difficulties and were succesfull with your language learning journey. Again, thanks for your tips. I'm 100% sure they'll be useful. Hopefully by the end of the year I'll be a B1 or B2 level 😁
@@kiaratouzett9910
The mass sentence method is good because learning words on their own out of context just doesn't work very well.
I'll make sure to include it in my Anki cards :)
I have never used Reddit.
Thank you so much for the video. It has been really useful!!
I wanna learn Mandarin so bad but it sounds so hard to learn. I love Chinese people & i'm eager to communicate with them but unfortunately there aren't many English-speaking chinese friends out there.
