    Great tips!. Remember having to do that to a Lincoln 5.0 I dropped into a 73 Maverick yrs back.

    Thanks for the heads up about the canges on the 302. Also, I had an experience when I installed 351W heads on a 302 block. Unknown to me, the heads had been milled way down to the point where I had to have the intake manifold end rails milled so the manifold gaskets would seal. The compression was also rather high, I had to run aviation gasoline in it. It went like hell, though! I'll avoid buying milled heads in the future.

      Awesome! Any power estimations?

    • @zmxl1020
      @zmxl1020 7 років тому +2

      After timing it with a stop watch over 1/4 mile, the net horsepower at the rear wheels was approx 415 HP. Due to sloppy work and over-milling the heads by the former owner, it was nothing but aggravation. I had it in a '75 Maverick. Top speed with a 3:50 rear was 140 mph timed over one mile.

    My neighbor and I did this on his 1966 mustang. Rumor has it these efi 5.0's came with forged pistons from the factory! It's a fun swap!

    My 65 Mustang has a 302 originally out of an 86 Ford van. It went in about 15 years ago. We went with all the front end accessories from the 60s style 289. Looking at the engine, you would think it is a 289. We had to change the front cover and pan as you said. The front of the 302 crank was shaved a bit so the accessories would mount as if it were a 289.

    I put a 5.0 from a 90 Mustang into my 68. I used shorty headers and the timing cover from my 289. I also added the fuel pump eccentric and my old distributor which I had to change the gear on as to not destroy the aftermarket cam. Everything was on track until I had an issue I didnt read about anywhere. I am using the accessories from my 289 and the power steering bracket bolt didnt fit the 5.0 head. I didnt want to ruin the original aluminum bracket so I bought a '70 stang ps bracket and drilled out the correct bolt size for the 5.0 head. Almost there.

    Water pump on serpentine drive is opposite rotation than V-belt. Make sure timing cover matches the pump rotation. The 289 cover works for V belt but timing pointer is opposite side. Have to mark TDC on damper to time ignition.

    • @Myvintageiron7512
      @Myvintageiron7512  2 роки тому

      yes that's correct it is always best to fins true TDC with the heads off or a piston stop with the heads on

    What about those using V belt? Don't you need to change the water pump/timing cover to rotate the other way? And as noted below, change the gear (compatible with steel cam) on the vintage distributor if you are trying to make a more original looking build.

    I am putting a 94 5.0 in a 65 Comet. You had a video about porting the E7 heads and you put in only one bigger valve, was it the intake and if so how big of a valve was it? Only option I have now are the E7's is there anything else you would suggest? It's going to have a dual plane intake and 4 barrel. Headers are going to be another project.
    Thanks, Harv

    You don't want to confuse somebody into thinking that the Windsor pan will fit on a 302 because the rear main is larger on the Windsor anyways that thing would be cool with a hilborn injection setup on top

    • @Myvintageiron7512
      @Myvintageiron7512  7 років тому +2

      That is a great point and very correct the 351 Pan will not fit on a 302 I was just pointing out the rear sump pan as opposed to the front sump

    Hello, hope all is well your way. I have a later model 302. Engine casting 36 E7TE CA. I'm guessing 1987 truck engine. I want to put it in a 1965 mustang. The problem I having is my pulley are not lining up. I have a 4 bolt damper. What vehicles or where can I find the correct pulleys for v belts setup.

    I have a '91 5.0 that's been swapped into my '68 Mustang. It's carb'd and I'm using all of the accessories from the old 289. One issue I ran into is that I'm using the heads from the 5.0 and the bolt for the power steering pump (from the 289) is too small for the 5.0 heads. I can't for the life of me find an adapter, and I can't use the 5.0 bolt on the 289 power steering bracket because the openings are too small. I'm reading that the 289 used 3/8 internal threads for the bolt and the 5.0 uses 7/16. Unfortunately I'm at a stand still, have been for a while. Any recommendations?

    • @Myvintageiron7512
      @Myvintageiron7512  7 років тому

      Yep this one is easy use a stepped stud one end is 3/8 for the pump and the other end is 7/16 copperstate should have them,
      the other fix is to drill out the ps bracket hole

  • @jeffrey4547

    try putting a 390 in a 64 ford pu with the old 312 in it with front mount then it was a 63 t bird 390 with the cast iron automatic with out the bell housing found that ford made 3 different bolt patterns on the 390 and a 390 63 t bird is one of a kind the stander 390 it has none of the same bolt pasterns block and trans the other rare one has the same block but not the trans so i had to drill and tap the trans bolts to the bell housing but stock the 390 i had has 400 hp with the tri witch i got with the engine rebuilt for 75 bucks that is y i used it it was cheap because after 2 years the guy could not find a bell housing for it . i was just going to build it from scratch but found the one i did and it was a lot faster to do .
