      Up north, what should one do during the winter? I just found this awesome little dude and it's almost October and I'm off grid. I think if I let him go hes gonna become food, and I would like to keep him. Any advice? Thank you and awesome video!

    Nice! I'm thinking of getting at least 1 type of snapping turtle when i get my tank and supplies to keep tank animals. I don't really know if I should get a hatchling common snapper though as they're ACTIVELY AGGRESSIVE... they hunt their food! So if a frog or salamander would swim passed them, they may get killed. Maybe even the other turtles in the setup, smh..
    I was thinking about hopping up 3 steps and getting a hatchling alligator snapper, but they're boring. Usually just sit around you know? Not as fast as the common I guess.. what do you suppose I do??

    I love your videos, you have given me great insight on how to care for snapping turtles. I have a question for you about my baby alligator snapping turtle. Some background first. My brother in law brought this turtle home right before winter last year. His intention was to grow the turtle and then cook and eat it. I told him he was nuts then took the turtle from him. I kept the turtle because of it being close to winter. I have cared for the turtle since then. I kid you not , I watch tv and my turtle lays on me and takes naps. So he/she is tame and not showing aggression. It is now starting to warm up here in Missouri, and I wish to put this turtle back in the wild. Where is the best place to release an alligator snapping turtle? Pond, lake, river? I want him to have the best chance for survival. He was the size of a half dollar, now his shell measures about 5 inches across. Is he large enough for release or should I keep him/her another year and then release to insure his survival in the wild? I would greatly appreciate your advice, or a link that can help guide me.

    I have always kept mine in bare bottom enclosures, but have wanted to have a substrate for plants like Amazon Sword or Java Moss.

    • @GregsTurtleHaven
      @GregsTurtleHaven  4 роки тому +3

      Not worried at all. Turtles can naturally pass gravel as long as they have a natural diet. Turtles suffering from impaction are heavily fed pellet diets, which clogs the digestive system. I’ve never had a turtle with impaction in over 30 years of keeping
