Hi Sol! I've had bad experience with algae eaters. Definitely a no go. Same with minnows, although I had assumed they'd end up snacks for the turtles. I have Buenos Aires tetras, and giant danios. You covered everything well. I have tried other tank mates like red tailed sharks, but ultimately removed them because I saw them being hunted. They just weren't quick or aggressive enough and probably would have wound up being ate.

Snails and shrimp are great they breed fast and make a good food source for the turtle. As long as u have a big enough tank and hiding spots for them to be able to breed u should be good

I’ve had 2 comet goldfish and 1 shubunkin in the tank for about a year and a half now. I got them big enough so I know Timothee (my turtle) wouldnt be able to eat them. The first two weeks he chased them a bit but they’ve all coexisted peacefully ever since!

Keep in mind that turtles are unpredictable and sometimes randomly turn on their tankmates. Provide a lot of hiding spaces for your frogs if you wish to keep them alive. And feed the turtle daily.
Plainly put, don't become attached to animals that you choose to cohabit with your turtle. I do not recommend naming the frogs!

    • @avonavians2860
      @avonavians2860 Рік тому

@@RichBuddy I'm sorry to say that the frogs would probably be eaten one by one.
You had the right idea with the large enclosure, but here's the fatal flaw. Poison dart frogs are unlikely to have the instincts to coexist. They are confident and bold, and would probably just hang out around the turtle too obviously for him to ignore. Now in the wild they have potent poison and have nothing to fear. In captivity they are usually harmless, and they would not realize that they should be hiding when the turtle is around.
For a box turtle, I'd say only a bullfrog would be safe.
I'm hoping to move our red-eared slider to an outdoor enclosure for her to share with some bullfrogs, but even then they would have their own private pond to escape to.

I personally recommend rosy red minnows. Although they do contain thiaminase, that is not an issue when you are trying to cohabit them with turtles because if you set them up for success, the turtles will have a hard time catching them in the first place. Although they are "feeder" fish, they actually make much better tank mates!
Reason 1: They can tolerate poor water conditions. Of course, the water should be kept as clean as possible, but they are not what I would call a "sensitive" species. They also have very basic oxygen requirements.
Reason 2: They can tolerate temperatures anywhere between 100 degrees f and 33 degrees f.
Reason 3: They are very fast. Their forked tails and streamlined bodies mean that if you provide them with a lot of space, they are too fast for the turtles to chase.
Reason 4: They actually have a complex compound called "Schreckstoff" that marks their predators. That means that if one fish is eaten by the turtle, it will smell like danger to the others, and they will try harder to avoid it.
The only reason feeder fish get eaten so quickly is because they are set up for disaster.
They are usually not acclimated to the water, and they are thrown into the tank during feeding time.
The results would hypothetically be different if the turtle was added into the tank AFTER the fish.
    But most importantly...
Reason 5: Most people will not be devastated if the turtle manages to catch them. And if the turtle eats the minnows on one occasion, that is not nearly enough thiaminase to cause any issues.
We also feed our turtle pellets that help to replenish any thiamin lost.

    NO TOXIC FISH
From personal experience, please don't put any potentially toxic or poisonous fish in with a turtle. Under stress some catfish like cory cats can release a toxin. I has a snapper who was injured when he tried to snack on a cory cat. The turtle did eventually fully recover. The fish was definitely alive afterward, but had to be removed from that tank.

İ introduced two tetras, ghost and cherry shrimp and a snail in my RES tank and she tried to go after them for the first two days then gave up when she couldnt catch any 😅 now she mostly leaves them alone unless the shrimp get too close but honestly theyre too fast for my turtle. By the way my turtle is super hungry all the time and goes after anything that moves in the tank EXCEPT her current tank mates(she'll try to bite my hand when i remove the filter for cleaning even though shes well fed) the only problem i saw was she tried to eat the snail so i moved it to another tank but i think as long as the tank mates are fast enough its going to be alright. Also they do an awesome job of keeping the tank clean!

I would not worry about keeping those with turtles. Both crustaceans are so prolific that if you provide a lot of shelter and plants the turtles are unlikely to eliminate them. Just remember that scuds and seed shrimp won't eat the turtle waste much. But they love uneaten food and algae!

I have a common musk and a northern black knobbed map. They both will eat snails. The map will eat a snail every once in awhile and they can be much larger than will fit in his mouth. The musk will eat all snails, no matter what. Shell and all. Size doesn't matter. :) If it goes in his tank, be ok with it being eaten at some point. He even has a breeding population of guppies at his disposal whenever he wants a fresh snack. The map is able to live with kuhli loaches and neon tetras without issue.

What’s something that could stay with a male yellow eared slider. Found him as a hatchlings in the grass with seagulls trying to eat him so he’s very friendly with humans and even swims up to my hand and rests his head on it. But I’m unsure how a 15 year old male slider would react to fish or shrimp especially considering he’s been a little solo turtle for most of his life aside from a loach that’s catapulted itself out the tank somehow

I hate when people say oh you can't add other fish to a turtle tank. If you keep the water clean you won't have an issue. The first time I added neons my turtle ate a few. Sure it's natural. However, when I got more again she did not even touch them only if they died.
