  • Philosopher of mind Peter Sjöstedt-H discusses the hidden impact psychedelics have had on philosophy and asks if such extreme, altered modes of mind could help give us answers to some of the big questions facing the philosophers and scientists of today. Peter is an Anglo-Scandinavian philosopher of mind and author. He lives in West Cornwall and is engaged in his PhD with the University of Exeter, where he also teaches philosophy modules and writing skills. Peter is the inspiration behind the inhuman philosopher Marvel Superhero, Karnak. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. This is my first contact with Peter Sjöstedts work. As a regular Ayahuasca user I can only say that from my perspective he is spot on in many aspects he mentioned in his discussion. In fact it was so profound or meaningful that I will further dive into what he has to say. I must say that I am a science oriented person myself and don't find much direct meaning in more esoteric models which describe psychedelic states, except maybe in a highly metaphorical way.
One of the re-occuring images I have during my Ayahuasca journeys is a very strong feeling that the answers to most questions regarding the existence of our cosmos are to be found within ourselves, not the outside (although the latter is important to get the whole picture). And by the unique way our brain and our psyche is organized we have the potential to eventually get down to the bottom of it. Or at least maybe near it, like squaring a circle.
Thank you Peter, for your work on that, and for being a driving force to bring these important matters into scientific realms.

Eternal Novelty That's almost the only way to attract attention and more interest. It's unfortunate, but in this world you gotta sound academic and intelligent to be listened. If you sound too trippy or start to talk about subjects that the normal person can't grasp on, you will be labeled as a junkie or insane.
I'm sorry, but that's how the world is for now. But a change is happening slowly because psychedelic and spiritual influencers and messengers have realized that almost the only way to be listened, is to show to the blind masses that not only addicts and insane people use psychedelics, and that with responsible and proper use of psychedelic medicine, comes knowledge and evolution.

The psychedelic experience shatters the materialist view of existence. It certainly did for me, but took many years to accept. Excited for more scientists to experience this and finally open the scientific community to a deeper understanding of reality. From being on both sides I can tell you we are in desperate need.

What contradicts that statement is that he was aware of "every sound in the room" which implies that there was also a conscious element to this experience, thus defeating the statement. I'm also wary of the statement that "mind is not matter" where it is definitive that mind is clearly ALSO matter wherein its form follows its function. I'm not sceptical about the use of these substances to attain a higher state of mind but maybe simply a higher state of consciousness and not only an existential thought- such as parallel universes etc.

My advice from my personal experiences: Meditations about compassion “towards yourself and others“ really open up new doors. 2 Observing fears and anxieties while being coscious enough to think of letting it go makes fear a friend to you.

I agree that psychadelics can open up the mind to questions of the nature of reality. There is more to reality than meets the normal eye, which is revealed as only a representation. Kant et al were surely right about the experience/reality (phen/noum) distinction. And the elasticity of experience of reality warrants profound and systematic investigation... It's another question whether this sort of experience, although opening up the questions, necessarily leads to better answers (cf Plato, panpsychism, etc), since analytic rigour is still required to coherently and convincingly construct the formulation in words, no matter how persuasive the experience itself. Nevertheless, experience will possibly be the true final frontier, once people have got beyond their idolisation of technology and figured out that we're not going to colonise Mars anytime soon. Good job Peter. (Don't think I could sell the transcript to my boss though ;-))

I had a strong weed edible and ever since then, my interest in consciousness (which I already had) has peaked.. I don't do a lot of drugs and this was my second time getting high. I smoked first, then had an edible. Those two events vastly increase my interest in the topics of mind, matter, reality, and existence entirely.
Ive started comparing consciousness to the universe. Both are fabrics that can manipulated.

@@arthurdossantos6826 Thank you Mr Santos. In just one sentence, you cleared up centuries of philosophical debates on mind and matter. Can you write a book on this insight and help poor philosophers like Peter Sjostedt-H who studied this dilemma for years but never could arrive at such a concise and precise definition as yours.
How silly were we to use these two terms separately, when in fact, they were one and the same !
