  • NOTE FROM TED: This talk, which was filmed at a TEDx event, contains assertions about psychedelics as a treatment for psychological trauma that have yet to be fully demonstrated in peer-reviewed research. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t...
This TEDx talk explores psychedelics in history, the current research and a possible future model of post prohibition regulation based of the model of public health. Mark Haden has worked in the field of addiction services for 28 years and is an adjunct professor at the University of British Columbia in the School of Public and Population Health. He is an instructor at the University of British Columbia and has published studies on drug control policy in several Canadian and International academic journals. He works closely with the Health Officers of British Columbia on position papers related to market regulation of illegal drugs and in 2013 was awarded the Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal for his work on drug policy reform. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Psilocybin containing mushrooms saved my life. The drastically reduced my Benzodiazepine withdrawal allowing me to quit illicit pill addiction after three years.

I've done Mushrooms (100+) LSD (50+) DMT (100+) times, here is what I found.
The only truly bad thing you can do with your life is to take it to seriously. Death is the only destination of life, so please don't hurry through, don't think of life as a journey, with a serious destination at the end. Realize it's all just play, it's a musical thing, and you are supposed to sing and dance your way through it.

      I believe it will happen😊
I also believe that corporations and society will adjust very beautifully, corporations are just communities of people that develop and offer products and services. There is some contrasting stigmas behind corporations that jump all the way to corporate greed, there are 29million small business in the U.S. some of which are corporations. There is a wealth gap in the U.S. and throughout the World, but it should not just be seen as a gap in wealth. It is rather a gap in knowledge. There is a level of toxicity in only holding to the belief of corporations=bad and that things will never change such as the gap in wealth/knowledge. Although frustrating at first when discovering some of the truths of society, there is a vast beauty when educating ourselves and believing that things can change in our society. The answer and your individual answer in this role may not happen immediately, but keeping our eyes and heart open for the ways in which we can grow allows for those answers to fall beautifully into place, it is pivotal for one's self and for the whole😊

Think realistically. People have killed themselves tripping alone. So that alone can be used on top of mass hysteria and propaganda scaring people away for good. to be in a controlled environment with people who will keep you safe and aim you in the direction your intent was (which can easily be forgotten on an intense trip) the overall positive effects will increase greatly. You can’t just say hey everyone should take this and do it alone because it worked for me. That isn’t a realistic way to imagine this actually being implemented. Though I do agree if everyone just took dmt or lsd or mushrooms rn, the world would be a very different place.

Fred Stone I’ve recently had a bad trip that showed me a lot about myself. Much needed but I’m not terrified of all drugs and the thing we have to realize is the decision won’t be made for us. If you want to use these as tools to find truths , fight the fear and overcome. Its what I’ve been telling myself. But if you don’t think you can handle the truths it shows you, ask yourself if you really want the truth, and if you really want to be a different person. You have so much time left to explore, it doesn’t have to be tonight or tomorrow. Just take your time and don’t take life too seriously.

Im now 18 and I've done lsd 45+ times and mushrooms 3 times, and I've found psilocybin to be alot more therapeutic and loving compared to lsd which I've found to be good at showing you what's up but really working showing you how to work through it.

I've seen it with my own eyes help someone come to terms with a breakup in a roller-coaster 8 hours. To say that literally getting over every year of relationship took little over an hour has to be a world record of some sort.. All he said was "this energy is leashing/leeching/lashing me" "she's eating me out under" and the best last line.. "I'm becoming one with nature" before rolling into a bed sheet and sleeping on the grass.. I kid you not.. From hours long heart breaking conversations everyday to not a single word about her and generally not bringing it up because it's an "open wound".. This was during a weekend trip overseas.. By the time we arrived back, it was then an OK subject because "it's part of my life experience with all its good and bad.. We're not gonna cry over it for all eternity.. Haha, right?" obviously I wasn't laughing because..no if not for this magic maturity boost, I've been on this rodeo before with him and this usually lasts about 6 more months.
It was literally like magic.. You have to see it to believe it. But I'm sure it also requires strong willed rational people.. Bad experiences can be very traumatic/and life altering. Seen that too.

I still think it's perfectly fine to do this stuff by yourself, you don't have to be supervised, but some people can benefit from that, others can handle themselves just fine, not everyone is irresponsible, not everyone takes something, especially like this, without first informing/educate themselves.

    • @anarchakelly
      @anarchakelly 6 років тому +15

Agreed. People have the freedom to imbibe w/e they want. I do think that theres an argument to be made that precautions should be made to avoid averse reactions as those can impact and negatively affect other people. Having a sober spotter is key, and as the speaker mentioned, set and setting are crucial. There's drug use and drug abuse, but the modern day era of drug prohibition basically views all drug use as drug abuse and the distinctions get lost in the noise.

I took a chance.. Well out of desperation.. And used ketamine, where I K holed several times I had several bad trips but my intuition told me that they were necessary and I just needed to integrate the revelations I got, into my everyday life. And now several months on, I am fighting back against addiction and although my life isn't great it's a lot better than what it was. For me Psychedelics may have been a life saver

There are those among us bringing this back. I’m a practicing psychedelic endurance shaman. Cactus & mushrooms are not counted by how many experiences, rather part of a strict diet. There are quite a few of us floating around the populace. It’s my work to fully learn & experience these realms of consciousness to guide & supply these medicines free of charge. Your healing & the ripple effect it causes is my payment. 🙏❤️

Those of us who are responsible users of psychedelics know well the benefits it has upon the human mind and know the importance of protecting humanity's right to 'raise our consciousness' as we see fit. Psychedelics should not be called a drug anymore and the term 'medicine' is much more apt

I really appreciate that this is a mental health professional, knowledgeable about psychedelics who recognizes that restricting use to one on one attention with a therapist and religious rituals would still be a restriction that would disenfranchise people.
Millennials and younger generations have experienced helicopter parenting more than completely disengaged parents, and the direct attentions of a therapist are not the same as getting to bond with peers (both friends and strangers).
Music festivals can be responsible use venues, especially if they are allowed to implement best practice administration procedures.
