- Katie Britt’s mocked GOP rebuttal to President Biden’s State of the Union address is apparently part of leading conservatives’ “trad wives” - short for traditional housewives - plan to send women back to the kitchen, Joy Reid explains.

My mother studied to be a nurse, but ended up a "trad wife". She had seven children, was denied a tubal ligation, was left dying from toxemia until the death fetus was birthed. She canned, cleaned, cooked, and did all other things a wife was required to do. She was the saddest person I ever knew. She wanted to be a nurse and ended up unfulfilled as a housewife. Maybe there are some women who enjoy that kind of life. My mother wasn't one of them. What a woman chooses to do should solely be up to her and her alone. No one has the right to tell another human being (which women are) what to do with their life.
My mom was also a trad wife. She INSISTED she loved it but I have never known a more miserable person. She was a helpless dependent.
Don't get into a blind relationship..
Pretty simple
I don't get y'all lol..
Wastes everyones time playing pretend just to get 'the guy'..

If your methods aren't working, buy some ice cream.. At least you only affect urself..
It would help if housewives got some sort of government check. Let us be independent too and not relying on the man's money and we could do wonders. Paying wives to stay home (if they choose to!) would decrease teen pregnancy, fuel consumption, the spread of diseases in school. And increase family happiness. I only see wins
If you get a government chec then you're still dependent. Plus some guys will marry multimple womento collect the cash.@@porschebridges9521

No JOY is one of the racist women in America. All she does is talk down on white people and family's.. Racism will always be her talking points and with that hate and evil.. No one even remembers that time because its passed and we have new issues now.
My mother bought into the whole "trad wife" message, raising two children and doting on her husband as a Stay At Home Mom. When my sister and I left home, she lasted four whole years before the crushing depression made her take her own life. My father, himself a firm believer in the "trad wife", has since remarried four times, in search of his perfect housekeep/chef/bedwarmer, because he is wholly incapable of feeding himself, washing his own clothes, being an adult. He's 82.
The "trad wife" is simply an institutional method of keeping women powerless and men immature. It is unnatural and needs to go away forever. The Rolling Stones song, "Mother's Little Helper" was about Valium, which 50's and 60's era housewives took to counter the despair of living the "trad wife" life.
In the 50s, my grandmother raised 3 kids and worked as a janitor at the local public school. My great-grandmother worked as domestic maid while raising 5 kids. Women have always worked. They only recently had the rights to match their male family. They only now have the opportunity to further their formal education and to be full citizens with all the rights of their sons, fathers, and husband's. OH yeah. Except for body autonomy. We just lost that.
We have the rights but we still have to deal with the sexist BS.

We have never had equal pay for equal work . . . except in the armed forces. But, since they pull every trick they can think of to keep us from being promoted, it amounts to the same thing. If the Equal Rights Amendment is revived for a vote, I encourage all my fellow women to support it. Yes, we DO need it. It's obvious that men are never going to consider us their equals without a law to back us up.
Agreed 💯. How many of us were farmers, merchants craftswomen and artisans to put food on the table? Women have ALWAYS worked.
And except for the right to dignity and privacy from males in our private, intimate spaces. We recently lost that too.

Self-proclaimed Conservatives desire to "return" to a time that never actually existed. The only women who were treated as "delicate flowers" who were too fragile to work were rich women. Poor and middle class women have always worked, on farms, in factories, as domestics, in every era of history women have worked outside the home, and then were expected to take care of the home and family, and have a baby every year until they died. Sojourner Truth talked about being hitched to a plow and asked "Ain't I a woman?" The so-called "Trad wife" is also a fictionalized rich Victornian noblewoman. They never really existed except in very specific socioeconomic levels.
Thank you Joy for bringing up Phyllis Schaffly - an extremely conservative Catholic activist who was very active in the anti-abortion movement as well as the anti-equal rights amendment movement.

Katie Britt fed into the stereotype, but like most maga cultists, isn’t living up to what they are trying to promote. If she thinks she’s June Clever, why isn’t she a stay at home mom?!? Why is she in the senate?!?
Because she's just spouting lies off to her base who either have an overly romanticised idea of that time, and/or who are unaware of what life for women was like back then. I was on the picket lines demanding our rights back then. I saw what life was like for my mom and her friends, and I didn't want that life for me or for my daughters. I got tear gassed and beaten by the cops in order that women and girls today could live full lives and make dreams come true. It breaks my heart to see Katie Britt sell out everything we worked and suffered for. You know that, just like most of these well-off Republican women, it won't matter to her because she's already set for life. It's all "do as I say, not as I do" for them. Don't get an ectopic pregnancy, because we aren't going to let you have an abortion even to save your life. But if I get pregnant with a child I don't want, I have the money to fly to Europe and get it taken care of. The other confounding part of it is they're not really doing these things because they believe a bit of it. They're doing it for political points only. They don't think there's any way it's going to come back to hit them in the face, and the think is, they're right. They might not get re-elected, though as an incumbent those chances are quite low, and even if they do fail to get re-elected, they are usually people who have the dollars to shrug it off as if they dropped a french fry on the floor.

My grandmothers were some of those who did whatever had to be done while the guys were off fighting, and both of them, my mom, and most of the other women her age that I knew slowly went crazy being told that their greatest fulfillment in life was cleaning out a grubby fridge while wearing a dress, pearls, and heels. It was not. One grandmother had been a nurse's assistant because she was available and others weren't. The other taught school because she loved it and she was available, and others weren't. My mother worked as a legal secretary before I became a prospect, and was then "offered" the chance to leave her job because I was on the way. According to Schlafly's son, she was a terrible mother who ignored her family and hit the road to go on perpetual speaking tours and built a career based on pretending to be trad wife.
She was one of the world's greatest hypocrites.
Well said, Joy!
Excellent analysis, Joy!
I'm a military vet, lefty, that grew up in the evangelical church. and I get bombarded with Trad Wife stuff. All of my social media pushes it on me.
Ms. Reid, this is one, excellent analysis! I plan to view this several times. I'm from the Leave It To Beaver era, but as a child who grew up in a "broken home" and whose mother worked in a factory to keep us together, the whole "trad" propaganda rang hollow in our house.
Bravo! This is NOT discussed enough either!! Keep up the great work!!
Any woman who is a lawyer and US Senator is NOT a "happy housewife". Katie Britt is, however, working against the best interests of women everywhere. Very sad. 😕
She maintains her rich woman pruilege by holding other women down.
This story is amazingly told from
Joy Reid! Just makes you want to go back and pay closer attention to the politics of everything back theb
I think of buying my own car & salesman said it was a little unusual for a woman to do that. I told him I work for my own money. I think about 1980.
And this is the reason I still watch MSNBC...
This is knowledge that should not be lost to history
Absolutely masterful treatment of the root causes, Ms Reid!
WOW what a great presentation, the machinations of society at work.
This is one of her best commentaries. Exposing the truth about how women have always been the backbone of the workforce. And all these lies men have been trying to feed us throughout the century. 🤨
Keeping kids happy, cleaned home, did laundry, cooked 3 meals, baked cookies & pies all in heels & wearing pearls.
But were Katie Britt's feet bare and is she pregnant? That would be the republican trifecta.
And surprise, surprise. There was no mention of abortion rights !!
During the '80s, I was in the Navy. I tried to get insurance for my car while my husband (also in the Navy) was deployed overseas. They refused without my husband's signature! Meanwhile, we were fighting for the Equal Rights Amendment and even some of my fellow women couldn't understand why we needed it. SMH. 🤔😩
Great segment, Joy!
This is what they want to go back to.
So if KATIE BRITT is supposed to be a “happy housewife” in ALABAMA, then why is she a US STATE SENATOR in WASHINGTON DC???
And THIS history lesson is what gives me hope against Trump and the MAGA movement. Like those of the 1950s who wanted to suppress women and minorities, they couldn't stop the upswell that burst into the 1960s and 70s. Sure, it's somewhat cyclical, but in the end, we progress. MAGA is DOOMED to failure. Trump WILL lose in November and he will drag the rest of the GOP with him.
Help spread this news cos so many Americans had forgotten the past and some like recent immigrants may not know about this our past history.
On a long enough timeline...we win, we always win. Conservatives can only fight to keep ground, they can't fight progress forever.
...You may want to see a doctor you TDS is showing. Trump 2024...!
only if people vote.
My history lesson goes back to the Civil War... what were the Dems fighting to keep...?
Thanks Joy! Exactly who i thought of! Phyllis Schafly!
Schafly was a lawyer telling women to forego college education. Hypocrisy
@@mariegarside8830 exactly. And she was not in the kitchen!
HIghly privileged conservative women are heavily invested in eeping other women down so they can retain their privilege@@mariegarside8830
Barefoot, pregnant and chained to the Stove: The American Dream...........
Please read the book When Everything Changed. It's a good look at the changes.
Another good read is "Vox." It's a dystopian novel that will make your skin crawl
Powerful stuff. ❤
I'm not going back to the kitchen
34 years of marriage, not sure my wife ever found the kitchen...now me.....all I need is a cast iron skillet, eggs, milk, flour, and sausage for biscuits gravy...and an oven for my lasagna
@@davidbaker1918 I bet you also call your wife "love", bring her breakfast to bed and unexpectedly buy her flowers from time to time... It is how I have treated my wife for the last 24 years.
And before some incel comments, I married her because I wanted her to be my partner, I have no use for a slave.
@@Alquanole Actually, I call her "Hunnie", or "Darlin" being from the South. Never brought her breakfast in bed, because the dogs we have would have pounced on her in order to get to the bacon.
Now my sons tried that when they were young and still lived at home...it was not a pretty sight what they did in the kitchen. Course, it's the thought that counts as the saying goes, and flowers, my wife has one helluva black thumb...
This was delivered absolutely beautifully. We should always be learning from our news like this.
Yes! I made a similar comment!!
We worked and still had TUPPERWARE Parties!!!!
Tupperware, Avon and Mary Kay were ways for women to supplement men's income.
How do these Stepford Wives get elected to office?!
Gerrymandering
They pretend to e Stepford wives
They are two faced, they act normsl by saying the right things and when they win, they show their true colour, like the one that used the democrats to win and then switch over to republican, cos she had always been one but lied to get in.
Women having votes isnt in the constitution!
(Trump dosent want to mention this!)
Yet!
Simple they fulfill the fantasties of insecure conservative men.
We see you, and we don't like what we're looking at. Vote blue 🇺🇲
Wow. Sounds like Saudi Arabia 😂😂😂😂
NK, Iran as well.
This was a good history lesson and how we often misrepresent how the past actually was. It wasn't more simple; it had similar and sometimes different issues.
True…the “good ole days”, weren’t as “good” as they were “old”…let’s leave them there, in the past, where they belong.
The only black things on Leave it to Beaver were cast iron skillets and freshly washed car tires.
Haven't they realized that The Stepford Wives was a movie
WHAT???..I spent months looking over maps and just assumed it was too small to be listed...man, don't I feel like a sucker.
@@davidbaker1918 Lolololol! Thanks for the smiles. All the feelings here are intense and heartfelt. I can see your heart's in the right place.
Speaking of wives, where's Melania? With all the perks she got from marrying Trump, she still walked out, and nobody blames her.
''I'm the KING of Debt.''
Donald tRUMP
Watching Joy makes me smile. She is always spot on.
Hazel Bryan, many years later, said that she regretted her actions from those days.
Time has proven her wrong
And her prior beliefs still exist to this day & that mean spirit rises from the MAGA crowd. They dont recognize themselves for their awful behavior & they actively encourage others to model that behavior too. No shame
Truly enjoyed this segment of your time slot. Keep up the good work. More truths like this please. 👌
If she were just the happy helpmate to her man, how could she possibly be a senator, or anything outside the home, in her own right?
Stay on it Joy, hitting the mark is simple if focus is narrowed towards the root of a problem.
