From TRAD Wife to Solo Homesteader: A Personal Story

- In 2001, I married and started my life with someone I thought I would be with forever. We had two kids after four years of marriage and I became a stay at home mom aka Trad wife. This is my story of how I evolved into a single homesteader.

I was married for 40 years and my ex-husband decided he didn't wanted to be married anymore. Never gave me a good reason why. So at 59 years old I live on my little homestead, work from home and trying to move on solo. I spend lots of time with my 4 grands.
Sometimes, rejection is protection. Thank goodness it was in time for you to pivot and start a new journey. I wish you all the peace and happiness you deserve. Enjoy your grand babies!
18 yrs ago my husband lost his then job. He sat on the couch sulking for weeks. One day I asked him if he wanted to go to the library with me. His reply was what would I do there, I don't like to read. I said maybe you can rent a free movie, or look at magazines.
Instead he picked up a book called "The Gardners Bible" he started a garden that yr and since then he grows all our veggies and herbs. He cans or freezes the left over harvest for the winter.
He's got his starter seeds going now, we're in Michigan so the seedlings will go in the ground in 4 weeks

Beautiful! I want to start a garden someday. Sometimes loses or changing jobs helps us find out things about ourselves that we didn't know. I am definitely trying to find my creativity through building out my van and documenting on my channel. I want a simple life.

Thank you. I don't regret my marriage or anything in my journey. But you are right. I discovered myself after my divorce.
Your story just proves how we only have ourselves despite marriage, children and friends. I hope you have healed before now and are back to what you love.

Yep. When my ex made me go back to work. That was the start of the end. I had stayed home and taken care of it all for 7 yrs.. I told him that we’d have more in the bank, but less in terms of familyness. Sad. He left us.

I wonder if when they want you to go back to work if they’ve already planned their exit and want you to be self sufficient… it’s strange how divorce comes after. 😢
what a beautiful gift from your ancestor Grandma. My grandma grew up on a chicken farm, and my daddy grew on farmland in Virginia. It's hard hard work, so my hat is off to you!
Thank you. It is hard. I can't wait until I retire so I can do it full time. In the meantime, as a teacher, I have my summers off so that really helps.

I bought my home in 2018 just a few months after my divorce. I don't have acreage but I have been on the journey to making a micro homestead on this little plot of land. Last year I went straight up vertically (no arched trellis due to space constraints) to maximize growing space and was quite pleased at how well everything grew. I learned just how much food you can grow in a front yard easement area by the electric pole, how big a melon can get and not break off and that the melon slings need to be stretchy otherwise it is an act of congress to get them out LOL. I have also learned where I made mistakes and this year is going to be a reset for most of my beds due to weed issues and greenhouse upgrades rather than growing a garden.
If I can suggest one thing, extend your weed barrier well outside of your beds to keep weeds from creeping in.

The only thing that helped with my past, bad bouts of depression was deliverance prayer in Jesus' name. It worked -- glory to Jesus.

Please be encouraged. I once yearned so much to homestead and didn't see a way. But I was looking to do it where I was. God had to open my heart to move. The land was there the whole time. My mom religiously paid the taxes years not knowing if anyone would ever live there again. Thanks for commenting. I feel honored.
