This is what the Thomas and Friends reboot wishes it was! Sure, there’s a lot of cartoony physics, but it also includes darker elements that remind me of the classic model era.
As a Thomas fan, couldn’t have said it better myself!

Sorry, but I accept these kind of cartoony physics (like bouncing body movements of the engines, and the "let's use our wheels as hands or legs" thing) only in fanmade Thomas contents, which are used to be pretty weird in a sort of funny and nostalgic way at the same time. I'm not really a fanboy of it I'ma Sonic The Hedgehog fan, but in my opinion, nowadays the franchise of my childhood deserves more fair treatment and respect than Mattel's garbage.
I wish the Brave Locomotive had a series, it deserves it more than All engines go.
The second newspaper actually states that Samson was grateful for Linus saving his life and the lives of his passengers, and that he was actually reassigned, and now he hauls lumber over great distances, to make up for the bridge he unknowingly caused to collapse.
Hey there! At 14:37, yes that did actually happen, but to a more terrifying manner. Steam is so INCREDIBLY powerful. If you look up "boiler explosion" the first photo you'll see is one you'll remember forever, but yeah, it did happen, and a good bit too, but less in the 1900's.

steam boilers were deadly, and also a lot of human error, some were machince failure, but a lot were just honest human error. one mistake like adding to much coal making the crown sheet red hot, the moment water touches that burning metal area. steam is expanded in a split second, literally you won't even hear the thing bowl until you;re either dead or lucky enough to be blown away.
@@octopus1066 Hey, so not to be rude. But you have it backwards. The engine would never explode from too much steam, unless the boiler had minor problems that grew in time. If there was ever to much steam, that steam would be released via the satefy valve that popped with to much pressure. Water is the coolant for the crownsheet, keeping it from expanding and shooting staybolts out like bullets. What would happen is the fireman wouldnt watch his water level, they would descend down a grade or level off after a climb, and the water wasnt high enough, allowing for the crownsheet to fail.
Around when Samson was made to stay, you said that this would be "Diesels overcoming Steam" however, Samson is still steam.

Also, the pipe connecting to the fire is called a "stoker" and it automatically brought coal into the firebox.
Also, explosions, like Linus faced, do occur. It was called a "boiler explosion" and when the water level dropped too low, the metal surrounding the firebox would melt, causing an explosion.

I love how despite it being short, it has humor and sadness, it's so wonderful and it reminds me of old Disney movies.
The titular locomotive (Linus) from the short was very clearly inspired by Casey Jr. from Dumbo. He's a 2-4-0, he's small, and his headlight is in the shape of a hat, just like with Casey Jr. However, Casey Jr. has a long protrusion for a nose, whereas Linus does not. Also, Casey Jr. is a mix of red and black (although in other depictions he's blue and orange), and Linus is pretty much entirely blue.
You can definitly tell it was inspired by stuff like "Little Toot" (1948) and like you said, Casey Junior.
And Samson is based off of either a Berkshire or the Readings T1.
The story also seems to borrow elements of The little engine that could, rolling stock look like they are inspired by the "The Caboose Who Got Loose" by Bill Peet and the human characters seem to borrow style and movement insperation from The Brave Engineer by Walt Disney
So many nostalgic elements of borrowed inspiration it's just amazing

OMG you actually did a reaction to this short, thanks for taking my recommendation! Seriously, Andrew Chesworth is an incredible animator, he's worked on a bunch of Disney movies as stated in the video, and also did a lot of work elsewhere, like with the Netflix Christmas movie Klaus. Incredibly talented man, and I love how much of a throwback to 1940's Disney cartoons this short is. Very wholesome and wonderful stuff.
The fact this animator worked on this film for got knows how long is just next level impressive

Yes, it took 8 years but. It was ent a main project so that’s why it took so long.
9:20, railroad nut here. That is a reference to a piece of equipment on a lot of large steam locomotives during ww2, which is an auto storker. A lot of “super power” locomotive consumed a lot of coal at max power, so much that the fire man can’t keep up with the needs of the fire. The auto storker is designed to keep fueling the engine, but not the way in the video. The a video of someone breaking down the parts of a big boy, and they talk about the auto storker. Which I recommend to check it out.

@@gamerfan8445 844 was a coal burner originally, but in all honesty Samson is probably made of a mix of features from different 4-8-4 Northerns. I went to 844 because she's the first one of the type I think of, and to be far the logo on Samson's tender looks very close to the UP shield.

4:39 Actually, it's "Colonna-ville", in reference to radio host and actor Jerry Collona. He's the man who narrated Disney's original "The Brave Engineer" short, some of his famous lines including " _Tis' a mooooornin'... _*_TIS A MOOOOOORRRRRRNIIIIING!!_* ", and of course *_"EGAAAAAD!!"_*
Samson is a steam engine. A 4-8-4 type to be exact. Despite the date shown in the animation these engines were introduced late into the steam era. Around 1930s onward and they’re considered the peak of steam traction engineering in terms of power, speed, efficiency and ease of maintenance coming closest to beating the diesels. So the complete opposite of a dainty 1800s 2-4-0 like Linus. The choice seems very intentional
And yes boiler explosions do happen. Very violently and much more easily than you think if you don't tend to your engine right. Most common cause is not paying attention to the water level and uncovering the top of the firebox
Samson looks more like a 4-8-2, albeit a slightly unusual one with the main rod connecting on the 3rd driving axle. Several 4-8-2s were built this way, the New Haven railroad had several, but it is slightly unusual. The design appears to be more similar to a heavy 2-8-2 overall.
The newspaper does say that Samson is very ahead of the times technologically so they acknowledged his design being anachronistic for 1895, saying it was just a great expense for the railroad company to develop him.
I love it that samson broke character, showing he's got a soul.
9:15 That's a Mechanichal Stoker. Many modern steam locomotive have them, and Samson is a 4-8-4 Northern, and many had and have these stokers, but this is an exadurated version, all of the mechanical stokers in real life are screws that go from under the tender coal bunker to the firebox.
I swear this video is DIRECTLY inspired by the 1991 movie adaption of The Little Engine That Could. Samson’s design looks directly taken from that movie. (I say “movie”, isn’t only 30 minutes long.)
Yeah this feels like old fashioned Disney, and Walt would love it as he loved trains. I also love that the antagonists are not evil, they are just trying to invest in better machines and be able to make more money providing a service to more people that then smaller train can. The fact the ending showed that even though time progresses, technology progresses, that we keep and maintain things to remember the past and appreciate it wasn't lost. There are aircraft, a modern bridge built to support mass transport trains, and the small train is kept around to remember a past worth treasuring puts a smile on my face.
I like that idea. Preserving the past to show that the past is worth remembering.
I did some digging to figure out some things about this film, and I was able to find out that the character Samson is heavily inspired by the C&O J3a greenbrier 4-8-4, Lima s2 Berkshire 2-8-4s, and Baldwin Locomotive Works 4-10-2 60000.
I am so glad someone reacted to this, it’s so awesome! The art style gives perfect classic Disney vibes and I’d super smooth.
You have to appreciate there is no true villain in the story here;
The Baron was a businessman with an eye for progress who saw great opportunities for technological improvements he even allowed Henry a chance to keep his job by being reassigned, and for an upper-class citizen of his time he showed genuine respect for Henry, a working-class citizen, by having tea at the engine with him.
Samson was just a big & intimidating train doing his job (admittingly better than Linus ever could) and never did he put down Linus outside of a stern glance.
You could argue that the 2 lumber mill workers were cruel but not true villains of the story, just an antagonistic force.
Watching your REACTIONS was almost as fun as watching it the first time myself. Literally, I re-watched the whole thing again almost entirely because your reaction felt so... raw, authentic, deserved. This is such a beautiful animation. I love everything about all of this.

This was a cool reaction! I kinda wasn’t expecting anyone to react to this. This is actually WAY more Casey Junior from Dumbo than Thomas the Tank Engine, in the design and the movements. Colonnaville is also a reference to Jerry Colonna, who was a big voice actor in some Disney movies.
Tho Samson's crash itself reminds me a lot more of Thomas
since theres multiple instances where engines had accidents in exactly same way in thomas

HOGWASH! You can’t tell me heart felt 2D animated art movies are no more this is probably more entertaining then majority of Disney movies now and it legit packed more emotion and quality into 7 minutes that a Disney movie can’t seem to cram in 1 hr and 40 min movies.
At 4:41, I believe the name is supposed to be a play on the word “colonnade,” which refers either to a row of columns supporting a roof, or otherwise a series of tall objects in a row. Assuming that is the intended meaning, it’s a tad ironic considering the background art depicts Colonnaville of being completely devoid of absolutely anything.
After seeing this animation I actually found an old Disney short called The Brave Engineer which I think this is paying tribute to. It features the voice of a performer named Jerry Colonna as a narrator.

The first time I heard that Disney was going to make a movie to celebrate its 100th anniversary (Wish) I thought they would make an effort to bring us something like this animated short, their original 2D technique by which they became great, or at least make a hybridization of techniques (Not necessarily like Spider-Verse) the same way they did with Paperman.

I remember seeing the trailer that was ffrom ages ago and wasn't entirely finished as the end was like a white board without color but now knowing this could be a series is just amazing seeing how far it could get
This was a story of the industrialization of the railways during either WW1 or WW2 when there weren't as many available men to run the railways.
During the day of Linus, trains were smaller and less powerful as seen with Linus only having two coaches and the caboose, all of which were very small cars. This was also the day when engineers pretty much owned their engine (hinted to in the picture of Henry and Linus). Even though Linus was a tiny train it still would have had at least 5 men operating it, Henry the engineer, his fireman (not Henry shoveling the coal), a forward brakeman, a rear brakeman, and the conductor. If the railroad needed to run more cars then they would add another engine in front of Linus adding two more people to the line up with another engineer and fireman.
This story is the story of when manpower was scarce and the need to move freight was high, so bigger and bigger engines were built that could do the work of 20 engines while still only needing the 5 man crew. That is why Samson has the stocker, and is pulling multiple large passenger coaches at a greater speed, showing how much power he has over what Linus can do. But, as in real life we see that the windy up and down path that Linus could run gets leveled out and straightened because Samson isn't able to go around those tight turns and wouldn't be able to be safely ran on track with too steep of a grade due to the length of his boiler.
This sadly is the story of progress, and the fall of workforce.

That thing at 9:06 is a cartoon version of a stoker, it's basically a pipe with a rotating shaft that moves coal directly into the firebox. There are a few preserved steam locomotives in north America with working examples of stokers.
If you want to really understand the context better, you should have watched The Brave Engineer and Little Toot to get how much homage this pays to those times. That and Casey Jr. looks a lot like Linus. The only other stretch reference that is in my head is that Linus is similar to Lionel, the toy train-making company.

What you were looking at? My friend is what’s called a Stoker. As you can tell it transports coal directly from the tender to the firebox. Normally stokers wouldn’t be taking up any space in the cab. On the contrary they’d be underneath the cab above the trailing wheels by the way, great reaction and have a nice day.
to awnser some of your questions (because this animation actually has a shit ton of attention to detail). the numbers on the newspaper are talking about how Linus is a 2-4-0 (old steam engines were often categorized along something known as the 'Whyte notation" which counted the number of pilot wheels (the first number), the powered driving wheels (the second number) and the number of trailing wheels (the last one), it may be confusing, especially when looking at it from the side, but just remember that your counting wheels). A 2-4-0, known by the common nickname "Porter" (or "Montezuma" for Rio-Grande fanbois) were VERY old engines, some of the first steam engines to come around, while Samson is a 4-8-4 (a wheel arrangement that has *many* nicknames), and he is very much a late 1940s design, with his cigar actually itself a reference to the "duel headlights" found on some American engines.
another thing to point out is that the repair at the end of the short is very realistic to! these old steam engines were absolute units that could come back from some pretty horrific crashes (Linus is actually in pretty good shape by steam engine crash standards)
Regarding the vultures, much more likely to be inspired by the ones in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The ones in Jungle Book were a little more on the goofy side.

I’m a train geeks sooo ima say that first it was gen 1 of locomotive technology and fist came some experimental locomotives that where pretty fast for the time. Then next you have your more stereotypical locomotive like the old western locomotives.Then you have the early 1900s locomotives. Then the more modern locomotive like Samson. And then railroads got into streamlined steam this is the period of where diesel engines started to come in this was during somewhere in the mid-1900s. After that railroads started to become more fond of the diesel by the late-1900s railroads replaced steam with diesel completely.

9:12 if you are wondering what is the thing from samson tender is actually where the water go's into the boiler let me explain so when you hear the word tank engine like thomas the tank engine is where they put water in the tanks but if it's a tender engine they basically have to build something to put there coal and water together
An explanation of your question about whether or not steam locomotives actually could explode; yes, they could. Steam Locomotives get very hot. It isn’t like boiling water in a pot, locomotives need to reach very high temperatures, as they need a lot of steam pressure to move, since they are quite heavy (the largest locomotive in existence today, when loaded with fuel and water, is said to weigh more than a Boeing 737). One of the more common causes of a boiler exploding would be the water level dropping too low. Once the water level drops low enough, the part of the firebox that transfers heat into the boiler, now being exposed to air and not having water to help cool it down, can start to get extremely hot, to the point in some cases it would start to deform. What this would result in, in a number of cases, is that, when water came back in contact with that part of the firebox, it would undergo superheating, which would cause the water to evaporate and rapidly expand, causing the boiler pressure to far exceed what it could handle, ultimately causing the boiler to explode, often extremely violently, with causes of boiler explosions leveling brick sheds and such. However, despite this, a boiler explosion was not always the end for a locomotive. Sometimes the rest of the locomotive would only take relatively minor damage, and the boiler could be replaced and the locomotive put back into service (boilers aren’t super complex and can be replaced easily).
This made me think of Little Toot from Disney's melody time. Especially the music

I like how none of the main characters in here (save the foreman and the other guy) are really antagonistic to Linus. No-one is really evil here. The Baron is seeing the future where rail traffic is gonna expand and needs more powerful engines to keep up, and he is right in that sense if history has shown us. The Baron's daughter is clearly not afraid o get dirty when she needs to, she even seems to know her way around an engine enough to fire and repair them. Maybe the Baron insisted his daughter get some practical experience with what she was set to inherit to better understand the business, and she's clearly not sour about the experience.
Samson does hit the turtle, though with how that turtle was crossing the tracks without looking that was bound to happen eventually, but Samson doesn't say or do anything to Linus, he's called in to do a job, and he does it. Its mentioned in the newspapers the bridge was rushed to keep up with him, and thats why it broke. Samson was only guilty of doing his job too well. Plus, its shown in the papers as well that he volunteers to help after his rescue, doing long-haul timber runs to replace and reinforce the bridge, which clearly works. He might look intimidating but he doesn't really do anything to warrant being called "villainous". Just a big strong guy who likes his cigars doing his job.
I like that they took the time to make everyone believable in their motivations and no-one does anything particularly "evil". You might argue the place (lumber yard maybe?) that Linus was sent to was evil but we dunno why he was sent there specifically, or whether or not the Baron had any real hand in it. I can't imagine the foreman would shoot an engine going to save his boss, so maybe its a seperate company that bought the engine? That happens a lot with older engines being passed down to smaller companies for lighter duties.

I'll be honest, if this got pushed to be a series, it could IMMEDIATELY bury what little remains of Thomas the Tank Engine after the past 5 years of PR disaster that IP's been through. Like it could do it so easily and I wouldn't even feel bad.
The planes at the end, its a sign, a sign that the flags of war flutter in the distance.
samson is a 2-8-4 berkshire class loco, they replaced a TON of old 2-6-2 and 4-6-2 locos when they were brought into the spotlight. pretty much replacing old steamers. So before the tin can known as diesel locomotives like the streamliners and GPs. railroads were scrapping a lot of there older earlier 19th and 20th locos for new and more modern locos. This one has a fire stroker, so no manual firing, the fireman was in charge of making sure the stroker was working right in order for these big giants to be fed right. For ref, the big 4014 was fitted with a coal stroker because if it was manual labor firing. the fireman would straight up die from over working himself and stress since the big boys ate around coal like a orc eating dinner.
74,700 lb (33,883 kg) of coal and 34,800 gallons (131,732 L) of water. This averages to 19,487 lb (8,839 kg) of coal and 9,078 gallons (34,364 L) of water used per hour, or 996 lb of coal and 464 gallons of water per mile (280 kg and 1,089 L per km) you would need 8 guys to fire a big boy going at low speeds.
fun train facts: samson seems to be a big boy steam locomotive, said locomotive was built by union pacific, which to this day still has one locomotive of said type still functioning. the big boy no. 4014. a singular big boy can pull 120 cars by itself and was so big they had to put the 2 chimneys inside of the locomotive itself because else it wouldn't fit through any tunnel. another fun fact is that just like in the video the big boy had a mechanism to automatically feed coal into the firebox, a stoker would run from the tender to the firebox, but the stoker would go under the cab, not through it. also, the tender would hold 24,000 gallons of water and 28 tons of coal. a not so fun fact is that if too little water is in the boiler, or the water runs out, or the boiler overheats in any way, the metal sheets may start melting, which will create a weak point for the superheated steam to escape very violently from where it can. the aftermath of such accidents are a train that looks like a spaghetti monster, due to the half melted pipes sticking, usually, out of the front of the train and many injuries, often lethal. such accidents are also extremely loud apparently
The big boy is a articulated locomotive 2 sets of cylinders and 16 drive wheels a 4-8-8-4 . Samson is a 4-8-4 arrangement the lil guy is a 4-4-0 arrangement. .

I think this whole short is also a respin/reference to one of his old shorts Wild West cause there is a train in that one that looks similar to the brave locomotive along with the lady in green

Yes, yes it did, excessive steam pressure being one main cause (hence the invention of the safety valve), the other being a crown sheet failure, the former needing no explanation, the latter being caused by the water level in the boiler dipping too low, allowing the crown sheet (the top of the firebox) to heat up more than it should, don’t really know how to explain it but reintroducing the cold water to the seething hot metal causes rapid fatigue, leading to an explosion

It's actually a bit too early for diesels. This is when the Bigger steam locos became prevalent. Pacific's, and Northerns.
If I've got it right, Samson is a Northern.
Also, the biggest trains, some northerns, Big Boys, had augers that directly fed coal into the firebox. So it's accurate.

Yes, trains actually do explode they’re called boiler explosions. It happens when not enough waters in the boiler and the boiler overheats, breaking their protective layer and exploding the boiler.

The way a steam locomotive works, there's coils inside the engine that are used for the cooling of the engine. It isn't just an empty tube. When a train overheats and explodes, those coils burst out, looking like a wild spaghetti mess. You can find plenty of photographs from accidents over the years.

Though there would be a major difference between the cartoon and reality: None of the people there would have survived standing that close to the engine.
I know of an example where a steam engines' boiler burst and the remains where thrown about 200 meters away...... plus everything would be full with boiling steam..... Not pretty.

Linus is a 2-4-0 Columbian type locomotive while Samson is a 4-8-4 a northern type of locomotive. For Samson think Union Pacific 844

Not quite the steam to diesel transition. More of what you see on screen. The early generations of steam engines giving way to the more modern steam locomotives you saw in the later years of Steam just prior to steam getting replaced all together with diesel. What you see at 9:10 though is actually a depiction of how these massive steam locomotives were fueled. Once they were actually out and running on the mainline, the biggest engines needed so much coal that a person couldn't keep up with the need so they designed a way to feed coal directly from the tender to the firebox. There were also steam locomotives that actually use oil instead of coal for an assortment of reasons. The biggest functioning steam locomotive in the world, The Big Boy, actually runs on oil nowadays. The only thing is that the feed from the tender was not directly through the middle of the cab but below it. This was just for show on film. Steam engines can and have blown up if they are overheated and run out of water so that is absolutely something that could've happened. Though, depending on how bad the damage is, it could be rebuilt or just scrapped. I think in most real life instances they were usually scrapped since there just wasn't much of anything left.
I also wouldn't describe this as "like Thomas" or whatever you said exactly. Well, not the version that so many of us grew up with. I would say it's more like "The Little Engine That Could."

Samson uses an automatic stoker. Big Boy 4014 also uses one.
Little thingy on the name of the station: Colonnaville should be read like "Colonna ville", like Amityville or Belleville. Fun trivia fact, "colonna" is the italian word for column, and as a curious coincidence I happen to live in a town in Italy named Colonna. Even more funny is the fact that like Colonnaville its only perk is a railroad station, for the rest it's just a bunch of houses with some neat green trimming

14:38 yes that does happen its because of boiler failure and the crown sheet failer and the cause of it is to much heat from the firebox and the metel over the firebox cracks and busts open causing the rapid making of steam then it has nowhere to go so it makes its own way therefore causing an boiler explosion
