- If you follow my work you already know how much I love the Ziegfeld Follies and pretty much everything from that era, which of course includes the iconic actress Hedy Lamarr. (Learn more about her here: en.wikipedia.o....
Not only was Hedy a stunning performer, she also was a very talented inventor!
This empowering woman was the perfect inspiration for this shoot vintage style beauty shoot.
This image shown here was taken during my Timeless workshop with Chris Knight. In this workshop we take inspiration from various time periods such as old Hollywood and put our mix on them, bringing them to life for attendees to photograph. 👉 lindsayadler.p...
💡 Lighting
As you can see from the BTS this is a complicated setup with 6 lights total. I’ve mentioned before I rarely go into a photo shoot with multiple lights right off the bat. I always build up and problem solve as I go along.
The lighting started off simple here, but I soon realized I wasn’t getting the light needed to reflect the stars on the beautiful headpiece.
In order to solve this problem we built a light tent of sorts by placing rolls of diffusion paper around the model. This gave the stars something to reflect off of and now they would actually show up.
I now had to light the diffusion, which I used a Magnum reflector with grid and bare bulb with grid on the opposite side.
Next I used a bare bulb with 10 degree grid as a main light on the model's face.
So far we’re at 3 lights, but when I think of old Hollywood, rim lights definitely come to mind. So I added two 1x4ft strip softboxes.
Last but not least is a light on the background with an Optical Spot and searchlight gobo to cast a pattern on the background just for a bit more flair.
I also added a Lastolite Triflector to bounce any light back into the subject’s face in case they move around.
Adding a white mist filter gave the image the illusion of haze being in the scene, which is another iconic look for images from that era.
For post processing I increased the contrast, then clarity and popped the highlights as well as converted the image to black and white. I also added a film grain to look like old film.
Lastly, in Photoshop I cleaned up some of the background and stars to make things more symmetrical.

Send me a message through my site, thanks.
Outstanding image and deconstruction.
Thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks so much!
Its great of you.... You are inspiring new photographers from different countries....love from kolkata, india
Thank you so much!
Lindsay Adler....YOU need to be in shoots like that! YOU as the model! Hollywood glam. Queen Adler muse!
lol. not sure about that but I appreciate it
Lindsay, you are incredible !!
Thank you so much!
Great job!
Also love Carole Lombard. Directors absolutely loved using eye lights on her... those super close ups.
Lory Sun really outdid herself. She's very talented.
She's incredible. truly!
I also love Hedy Lamarr. Someone to look up to. I wanted to compare your shot to the one of her. Figured it would be hard to find. It was the very first photo that came up in a search of just her name!
I always think of Hurrell when I think of old HW Glam Lighting. Nice job and great vid Lindsay.
This is a great walkthrough of a technical setup - thanks for sharing these ideas and approach. The White Mist filter was interesting because I recently photographed some portraits of young bride-to-be with the Hasselblad 120mm lens, which is super sharp. Add the 45 degree lighting and it rather emphasised some skin issues that were not so pleasing. With hingsight, I should have used the 80mm or 150mm but this white mist filter might have helped a lot. I do have a "beauty filter" (I think its called) but didn't think to use it.
Love the deconstruction process it definitely explains how you created this wonderful image.
Thanks so much!
I always love the story behind the shot, but amazing the tribute to Hedy Lamarr
Thank you!
Outstanding
Absolutely stunning and inspiring, as always!
@@lindsayadlerphoto as soon as I can get out there I will!!! XOXO
I am also a HUGE Hedy fan. Beautiful, graceful, funny and smart. In the 40's she patented frequency hopping radio which is still used today and she gave it to the US War Department who didn't know what to do with it. She was one of the most versatile actresses of her time spanning an incredible range of characters and the Gelatin Silver Prints she did with George Hurrell are some the best shadow edge gradient photography on the planet. You get 4 stars for picking Hedy today!
Thank you!
Lindsay did you know she was the inspiration for a vector image that won a competition and became the cover art for the Corel Draw 8 circa 1998
I did not! That's very cool!
Lindsay, every video you put up, I have to watch and learn. Again no disappointment. Your eye, knowledge, technique and style of teaching is second to known.
Thanks so much!
Beautiful I have to say the original is gorgeous as well ❤
Great video ending with a beautiful image. Do you think you could do a short vid on difference between white and black mist filter? Assuming there is one. Thanks.
yes its on my list for February filming!
Bravo!! Awesome work by you and your team. Hope to see another video this month or Feb.
This is amazing! Incredible work!! You are an inspiration to many,
Wonderful breakdown
Thank you!
That's such a great shot Lindsay! I really like the old Hollywood look. Thanks for the tutorial of how you achieved it. I did an old Hollywood shoot years ago with one of Tatyana's friends. Tatyana, of course, did the model's hair and makeup.
Awesome work by the headpiece designer and the photographer and team. Awesome tips.
Thank you!
Thank you, Lindsay. I wonder what your preferred method for B&W conversion is. I loved the lighting here, and also wonder if you thought of projecting the sun rays from behind on a diffusion BG for a more luminous effect.
Awesome work. Glad to hear you're working on a wide angle lens for the optical snoot. I use a Canon 50mm f/1.4.
Magnificent.
Thank you!
So so love this ❤ this was one of my favorite during the workshop ! ❤ love it can’t wait for June
If you look at a photo longer than 15 seconds you know you created something special. Just one correction, it is a 6 light set up ;)
hahah oops
Would love to see some metering steps as well. It would help us re-create, for example whats your f-stop on main light, strip softbox etc
You can find that information on all of my lighting guides at learnwithlindsay.com -- hundreds of setups.
Wait I’m confused, what is the purpose of a lens attached to the optical spot?
Otherwise I love this so much ! Can’t wait to try 10:05
To focus the light. You should probably check out my Optical Spot Explainer video lindsayadler.photo/opticalspotexplainer
Nobody’s going to say “That’s Hedley!”?
The model is fantastic, right??
What is the name if the camera lense filter that you used to get that misty look?
White Pro Mist
Nice! While nice, don't know how many clients would pay for a + $1000.00 portrait! Keep selling gear though! Good luck!!
My rate is $5k for a portrait and I do many. They do exist, its all about how you position yourself in the marketplace. Plus I live in NYC. :D

Lindsay, what are the roll of diffusion?
You can use a few different ones. There is just a general diffusion roll or the frost filter roll.
@@lindsayadlerphoto Ty,but tell me some cos I don't know

Great work, Lindsay. Hedy didn’t become a star in the US until 1938. Ziegfeld died in 1932. Hedy never was in the Follies.
She was in a movie about the Ziegfeld Follies. Judy Garland is in the same movie. One of my favorites.
Incredible work. I love the color verison a lil bit more. Reminds more of that Parmount opening.
