    Carpet pythons are amazing, I've had dozens of different types over the years. They are often snappy when young, but they grow out of that really quickly through respectful handling. And their bites don't hurt at that size anyway. I suspect this is where their unwarranted reputation comes from. I've only ever been bitten once by an adult, that was an 8ft+ Bredli and it was entirely my own fault for getting complacent while feeding her. That stung a lot. They have ravenous food responses. She was a teddy bear otherwise as are most carpets in reality. I just love them. They are misunderstood I think. People think they are big and bitey, in reality they aren't either. They can get long relative to a royal python etc, but they are slender and light so they never feel unmanageable. They are also curious, relatively smart, happy to sit out on the open and they come in more colours and pattern varients than you can imagine. For anybody with even a little experience in snakes who wants something more interesting than the usual beginner snakes. Carpets are well worth a look. Also the Jaguar (coastal) morph is unbelievably pretty, as are the zebras which are a pattern morph of the jungle. Nice set up you have there by the way.

    Great to watch another Mopani video - I had wondered how she is getting on. My JCP, Percy, has grown a huge amount since he came into my care last December, and I wonder how much you are feeding Mopani. Percy has four jumbo mice every five days, and would take six if I let him! I bought him from Crystal Palace Reptiles, and Darren there told me to keep the cool side at 27C. 22C seems rather too cool, given the climate in Queensland. Today he was basking for the entire afternoon at about 35C. Regarding getting JCPs onto rats, I tried Viperkeeper's method of sewing a small rat to the rear end of a mouse, and it worked, but it feels a bit ghoulish sewing rodents together! Percy was easy to handle in the shop, but I think that because he was in a small rub in a rack system in the shop, and I put him straight into a Viv Exotic 4 x 2 x 3 arboreal viv, and I think he sort of felt he was back in something resembling his natural habitat, because ever since then, he is nervous, and freaks out if I touch him. ahe has never struck out at me, he's just nervous. Interestingly, for the first month he stayed in his cool hide all day, only coming out to climb on the branches at night, but he has become diurnal since then - he usually comes out at about lunchtime to bask, and often goes back into his hide after lights out. Of my three snakes - B.C. amarali, JCP, and epicrates cenchria cenchria - only the latter is truly nocturnal.

    • @JensensReptiles
      @JensensReptiles  6 років тому +1

      Thanks for the awesome comment John, it's great to hear about Percy! Mopani was rather similar in behaviour when she was in her previous enclosure but a bit more 'bitey' than Percy. She's mellowed so much now, it's a pleasure to handle her.
      I feed her two chicks a week at the moment, but I'll persevere with some other options as she grows, she's still small :)
      As for temps, her gradient goes as low as 22C but only in one corner. And that's still nowhere near as low as the 9C night time temperature in Queensland and a little higher than the average 20C during their winter days. Don't worry though, she has lots of temperature options. She loves to bask but definitely makes use of the cooler end now and then too!
      I got Mopani from CPR too! She was escaped in the shop and we found her in a pile of Mopani wood there!

      @@JensensReptiles if she takes chicks try (as disgusting as it sounds) cutting off a chicks wing and stuffing it into the rats mouth! it's worked a treat for me over the years with reluctant rat feeders that take chicks! you can thoroughly rinse the rat beforehand with warm water to dull down their strong scent also.

    Awesome video! You take amazing care of her. I have a coastal carpet python myself and she's really sweet, she's timid when taking her out but never strikes, at least hasn't yet and I've had her for about a year. She seems to be timid when exploring when I'm handling her. But I'm assuming it's just the place that I got her from, she was very agressive in the store and they weren't too nice to her and gave her a small cage so I said I'd take the challenge. Of course like I said she is so much better.
    My only question is housing for her. I have been told to only use certain types of bedding for her cage as well as buy high cages. Right now I have her in a not tall but wide 60 gallon tank which I'm really trying to save money to buy a big tall cage for her. I was just wondering if you built or just found and bought the cage you have now? And also what do you use for her bedding?
    Otherwise I think I have her temperature and humidity right in her cage and she seems to be doing okay, just doesn't explore much as she's not got much to climb on. I know this videos a bit old but I loved it and had to comment!

    • @JensensReptiles
      @JensensReptiles  4 роки тому

      Thanks so much for your lovely comment! It’s always so nice to hear from like minded keepers!
      As far as the enclosure goes, this is a standard flat pack available in the Uk, made by vivexotic. Mopani is outgrowing it now, so I’ll need to sort a custom enclosure for her soon.
      Carpet pythons will enjoy width and height, so the bigger you can make the enclosure, the better!

    Good trick to switch from mice to rats is to put the rat feeder in used mouse bedding to scent the rodent. A lot of pet stores shouldn't mind giving you soiled bedding for very cheap if not free as they'd just be disposing of it anyways. It can save you money from using actual mice to scent the rat.

To have just a heat mat in the hot spot (weird because he likes to explore at night). Anyway the mat is low 30s but this time of year being quite cold the rest of the tank goes down to 16c. Hi, I have a few questions that I’m getting conflicting answers about if that’s okay :) I’m just about to get a new vivarium for my male jungle, would it be better to get a viva+ large deep terrestrial, or large deep arboreal? I have a white python slim ceramic bulb and guard for my royal python, and I find the guard is really hot to touch, is this normal and would it hurt my carpet if he touched it? Also with the branches you have in there, are they secured to the viv so they don’t move, or just wedged? Sorry for all the questions! Thank you :)

    • @JensensReptiles
      @JensensReptiles  4 роки тому

      Hey :) the bigger the viv, the better. Your snake will need height and width to move around comfortably.
      And yeah, the guards do get warm but nowhere near as warm as an exposed ceramic :)
      They might touch it, but they won’t get burnt, don’t worry. As for branches, mine are now all bolted in. Hope that helps!

      Ah, happy birthday when it rolls around! If you get a young carpet Python they might be a little “bitey” but be patient and persevere, the vast majority of adults are very chill. Make sure you’ve got the space you need too, these snakes grow pretty quickly 😁

    • @JensensReptiles

      Currently no, my stat is at a fixed temperature. However, with the height of the enclosure, there is a good temperature gradient throughout the tank. When I switch her stat to one that allows for a night time drop, I’ll definitely allow for one

    • @JensensReptiles
      @JensensReptiles  5 років тому

      Yep the coco peat is pretty much the same, in fact it’s a bit better. And yeah, if your animal is healthy, a small amount of substrate shouldn’t be an issue at all. Obviously if there are any very sharp pieces it’s a different matter, so just keep an eye out when feeding. The feeder animal should always be dry anyway, so substrate won’t cling to it :)

    Always interesting seeing Americans and Europeans falling in love with snakes from down under given the import export restrictions that mean we can’t bring in any snakes from overseas unless it is for a zoo or something like that. It is restrictive but we have such an incredible range of native species that it’s better to not have invasive monster pythons like they have in Florida. Australia has enough problems with feral animals as it is.

      That's cool that your uncle can help with a build! Money wise, I'm the wrong person to ask really. Neither of the snakes cost me anything. Mopani has had "hand me down" enclosures so she has been cheaper. But really, I reckon they'd be similar in price equipment wise. Boas are pretty cheap at the moment thanks to over breeding.
