  • Our back patio area is getting a makeover, again! We are installing a small Intex above-ground pool and are planning to turn it into our budget summer oasis, which is on Molly's top prenatal care wishlist. In this video, we demo the old layout, prep the ground for the pool base and start setting up our new Intex Pool. Soon we will have an entire wood surround, concrete pavers, and an outdoor shower!

OK, I'll chime in . 1984, I'd been living in my new house for 3 years. It is in a small subdivision that was a cornfield. NO SHADE. I needed something. Found an old pool free if I removed. It took me about 6 hours to put everything in my puckup. Working afternoon shift I'd come home and dig until sunrise then sleep. Just befor heading into work I'd take a quick look at my effort in broad daylight. It took me 2 weeks to dig the hole and manicure the bottom and edge. I bought a 24 foot by 6 foot liner for it. So I dug 2-1/2 feet down 20 feet across and tapered the edge up to the Aluminum pool wall. I hand piled dirt up around the edge to get the height. The finished size was a full 7-1/2 feet deep across 20 feet at the bottom. I figured 20,000 gallons and it took my well 2 full days to fill. For many many years we used that pool. I took the best care using liquid chlorine and muriatic acid. I restored the otiginal diatomaceous earth filter and it worked flawlessly. I ran 10 gallons/ min thru 900 feet of Black plastic tube on the roof of my pole barn for solar heat. It provided +10°F to the temp. Research Cyanuric Acid to keep the chlorine from evaporating so quickly. A solar cover helped keep it warm. I found 85°F was my favorite temp and I maintained it pretty well. l hav a e mail at yah oo moparbens@ it . com if you'd care to converse. ben/ michigan

I bought an above ground pool a couple years ago but we didn’t use it because we bought a hot tub. My husband cleaned out the garage and took the box the pool was in and we offered it to our neighbors who have kids. The little girl waved at my husband and said….Hello neighbor! Thank you for the pool!
I’m glad it got put to use.

The key to pool maintenance is Saltwater. Use a saltwater generator to chlorinate the pool. Sooooo much easier. Also a sand filter not that cartridge system. That size pool you would need about 80lbs of pool salt and the Intex Chlorine generator. Look into it, so much easier to keep clean and water crystal clear.

    • @TiredMommy-kt2nc
      @TiredMommy-kt2nc 6 місяців тому

Pools are a horrible investment if you take into account the time and money needed to maintain it. You have to keep it clean and maintain your pH and chemical levels. You have to skim the leaves and clean the filters or else you can kill your pump. I bet your daughter and son-in-law haven't bought the pool yet because no one has the time or inclination to clean and maintain one more thing. Unless you plan on doing it? Or are you offering ideas for how your daughter and her husband should spend their money and their time?
And kids have to be watched when in the pool. So they can "invest" in a death trap for their kids and pay for that pleasure.

One of the best investments I ever made was buying a pool. We were the only ones that had one, so of course everyone wanted to be at our house. We told my youngest daughter that was 5, that she had to help get the yard ready and remove the sod… my baby went out there in her rainboots, tank top and shorts dragging her Daddy’s shovel. She wanted that pool! Haha! She didn’t know we had installers coming to do everything. It was the cutest thing to watch her! 😉

So we got this type of pool. Much cheaper, but does the job. If it lasts five years, then it really wasn't expensive. I got a pool cleaning robot, very convenient. The robot is just dropped in the pool, and runs for about an hour. If the battery is drained, it stops at a wall for easy pickup.

Draining & Heating A Pool: I had an in-ground pool to empty out for repairs and paint, and later to heat up quickly for a child's 4th birthday party. I bought a submersible pump from Harbor Freight and ran garden hose from it out away from the house. After completing the repair and painting, I filled the pool and needed to heat it faster than just waiting on the Sun. I bought a roll of black plastic irrigation tubing. With the pump at the deep point of the pool and the tubing laid out around the concrete pool deck, I started the water recirculating five days before the party. That deep pool (9 feet at the deep end) was quite comfortably warm the morning of the party and all I had to do was remove the pump, coil up the tubing and put it all away. Total cost was under $75 in 2004.

Very nice.... Ultraviolet light is the worst thing for any plastic liner. Build a deck around it to protect the sides and cover it when not in use. It'll save water, keep dirt out of it, and keep the UV light from ruining your investment.

Would look awsome if you put some decking steps around the front sides and corner and some decking from the back corner up to both sides of the fence with some room for sitting in deck chairs, to cover all it in.

Pure physics. 1) The depth of the pool isn't much so the pressure is low. 2) The hose is small diameter and long. Both cause resistance to flow. Combine low pressure with high resistance and you get a LONG time for the water to just trickle out.

STRONGLY recommend that you get an above ground Sand Filter for your pool... The paper filters with never keep up with it. A sand filter can clean the entire pool in no time. Trust me, I had the exact pool, but larger.. and deeper...

Definitely try some different things before you finalize and add water. You really want to be able to get in and out all the way around and that spot is big enough to have the pool and a hot tub eventually good luck.

We are on our 3rd above ground pool starting small to the largest you can get and converting to saltwater system will by far help with EVERYTHING no shocking with chemicals after a hard rain etc and no it is not like the ocean people who have been in are shocked they can’t tell it’s saltwater. Trust you will not regret it.😊 Not a big project either, you have done way more complicated projects! Coming from a Florida family, we are not as capable, lol.😅

My concern with salt water is emptying the pool in the fall. With chlorine, we wait for the chlorine to dissipate or use a dechlorinator, then we can use the water to water the lawn and garden. I’d be afraid to use saltwater for that though

    • @DianaLynn45

We have a larger intex pool similar to theirs. We just leave our pool filled all year long. We live in Virginia so we have all seasons. We just shock it then just cover with a tarp and it's just fine each yr, no draining or refilling. Also, we tried the saltwater system but never worked for us because our water is too hard 🫤

I don't recommend drinking anything other than water while in the pool. If you spill anything it will cause mould to start growing. Of which the only cure is to drain, scrub, and rinse. One or two drinks might not be an issue, but a pool party can turn into a nightmare days later. Especially if people were drinking beer.

I have a silly question did you contact your water department with your meter reading and tell them you were filling a pool because usually they charge you for sewage as well as your water usage at the same time and they’ll deduct sewage from your water the total for the time that you’re filling your pool so it’s a discount at least most of the country does that I don’t know about your area but most of the country lol
