HOW TO change the disc on a cheap BENCH SANDER LINISHER Ryobi

  • I've had this cheap Ryobi Bench Sander since 2017 when I won it as a prize, it's been a fantastic unit but I had never replaced the disc. I found the user manual and it said NOTHING about changing the disc.
    So I hit record and dived into it, this is the result.
    TL:DR; I strip the old original sanding disc and replace it with a new 'Hook & Loop' pad so I can now replace the sanding dic easy peasy!

    Hello mate, nice video, loved it.
    A few years ago I acquired an old but similar machine, except it’s a floor model on a trolley. The disc is 255mm in diameter. There wasn’t stick-on Velcro discs nor compatible sanding discs of that size in South Africa. I used self adhesive Velcro strips on the metal disc, which worked fine. For the sanding discs I initially had to cut two half circles from loop backed sanding sheets that were 115 x 230mm, not ideal, the leading edge would tear after a while. Later on I was able to find full 230 x 280mm loop backed sheets from which I cut the right sized disks. This works like a charm and easy to change grits 80 right up to 220 although I usually use just 150 grit.
    BTW, I used acetone to get the old adhesive off.
    The manual is some generic poorly translated from the original Taiwanese mashup, virtually incomprehensible 😂. Consequently you have to wing it to change the belts.

      Thanks for watching mate! It sounds like you had an ordeal on your hands with that big disc sander but it's good to hear you got there in the end. Cheers mate!

    I’ve got a much older blue version of that sander and I bet it’s still the original disc! Thanks for sharing.

    Thanks for showing the sticky do hickey for the 6 inch disc so I have now ordered one so I can change my worn out disc easily with a Velcro backed disc of different grades .

    Late follow-up reply. Yes I would recommend cleaning the old glue off. Might leave “bumps” that will forever mess with future sanding jobs.
    PS I #finally got around to setting up my sander like this - been in the box for 2 (3?) years. And I #$@%$@# forgot to add the Velcro pad to the plate before I put the sanding disc on. So I have that to look forward to….. These are great but so cute and tiny compared to my school ones.

    Nice work. Got one of those sanders myself so this will be handy when the time comes. Job #1 when I get back to school is to replace the big ones there for the kiddies. We get ours from Tools For Schools - come in packs of 10 though and in different grits. Now you have a Dont Call It Velcro solution you might consider different grits for it?

      @OzSawdustMakers  Рік тому

      Absolutely Michael, that was the main motivator for doing this. Now I have a range of different grits I can use on that machine. It's a game changer!

    Nice effort brother. Just be aware you will never really get a true flat side with those because of the slight soft backing behind it now (ask me how I know 😭😭😭)
    3m super 77 adhesive spray is great (or their feathering adhesive if it ever becomes available again in Australia)

      Thanks mate, yeah I never expect anything to be true square, level or flat - especially when i'm involved 😂
