  • I recently bought a Delta Belt/Disc Sander for $20 at a garage sale but it needed a little work. This video shows how I cleaned it up, replaced the sandpaper, and fixed a broken piece on the table.

    Introducing the concept of 3D drafting and printing a replacement part was neat. I might have done a temporary fix with Superglue to get the sander up-and-running.

    Thx for the video. I was given this as a gift 20 years ago. And I use it a lot!
    The issue I’m having is the sanding (disc) plate keeps spinning after I turn the unit off? I removed the hex screw from the top. But the plate will not come off??
    I may try spraying WD-40 in and around the main shaft to help loosen it.

    Hello the sanding belt portion of my sander is not stable once I tighten the collar around it. This is when it is moved to the vertical potion. The collar appears tight but the sanding belt portion will move about 1/2 inch. Did you or anyone else have issues similar to this? I plan to disassemble to see if any problems...waiting on a bearing puller right now. Oh thank you for putting out the video....very cool use of 3d modeling and printing.

    Old video I know, but I have a similar sander, 1 or two years newer and cannot for the life of me, get the sanding disc off. I saw you struggled a little in this video, any ideas of how to get it off?

    • @gcbound
      @gcbound 2 роки тому +1

      If you use a razor blade or thin knife and can get it under the old disc anywhere around its edge, then with some patience and elbow (finger?) grease you can work it free slowly going around the circumference. It left a lot of adhesive on the metal for me, but a solvent took that off.

    Question for you! I am currently trying to do the same thing as you, but cant get that blasted disk off the shaft. The set screw is out and it spins on the shaft so it cant be seized to the shaft. Any advice on that one?

    • @tburyww1084
      @tburyww1084 5 років тому +1

      Riley Fancey to answer this question, get 2 hex bolts, 1/4 -20 x 4” long. Thread the bolts through the 2 holes next to the center shaft. Start turning the bolts in with a socket wrench, alternating between bolts to keep the depth around the same. Eventually, the bolts will bottom out and begin to push the plate off the shaft.

      you can remove the shaft from the sander and turn it around so the messed up end goes into the sander and the good end holds the table, I just had to do this exact thing. On my used Delta ($100!) there is no safety block on the belt sander, hmm

    Hi Vinny, where is the best place to get replacement belts?

    • @JC-tq8gm
      @JC-tq8gm 2 роки тому

      You'll need to go to Delta or a 3rd party selling on line if you're talking about the rubber belt. Put your sander's model number in the google search for parts and you may find someone selling it. Try Amazon and do the same thing, using the sanders model number and you will see different things being sold that fit that sander.
      If you're talking about the sanding belts, they can be found in most home depot type stores and many places on line as long as you know the belt/disc sizes. They are not Delta specific belts. Don't buy cheap ones. lol

      Delta is notorious for discontinuing parts! As a suggestion, Craftsman sells the same machine (they all come out of the same factory in China, they’re just painted different) and I bet it’s the same part! I’ve used this method of finding parts on several occasions!

    That part is so simple to make from a chunk of metal (brass,aluminum or steel) with just a hacksaw, drill and file.

    • @jimthesoundman8641
      @jimthesoundman8641 4 роки тому +2

      I agree. Plus 3-D printed stuff is just cheap-ass plastic. If a metal part didn't survive, how the heck does he think a plastic one will? Even using JB-Weld to glue the original part back together would be far superior to making a 3-D printed part. SMH.

  • @TangoCharlieAlpha
    @TangoCharlieAlpha 5 років тому

    Good effort on a tuneup, but certainly not a "restoration". You may have some issues if you are sanding the backing materials though. Those are meant to be perfectly flat, and I fear that yours may not be now.
    I was rooting for you to squirt some old WD40 on that table shaft. A little penetrating oil can help tremendously. Just my 2 cents.

    Not Restoration. Just simple SURFACE aesthetic cleaning. Not enough skills or necessary tools to perform any "restoration". Purchase a cheap Grizzly G0602 and learn to work it, get some serious machining skills as well as electrical experience. Perhaps the term "restoration" could be used correctly. No worries JMHO.
