    Ridgid has always been very good for the price & unbeatable warranty. When Ridgid/AEG first started they had a better drill than milwaukee (sellout) who licensed Atlas Copco to build flamboyant red Loktors for them. Ridgid even had a more powerful drill with an alloy housing instead of old milwukee's best nylon or whatever. That was a long time ago and if you consider how many times old milwaukee has switched battery configurations, while all of Ridgid's 18v batteries are reverse compatible for over 24 years and the fact that old milwaukee isn't really even an American company, except for a cubical in a building of South Carolina, getting started with Ridgid has never been a bad idea.

      I do think that they are a solid platform I just worry about some of the ups and downs they have had with their lineup over the years. They had a big push with octane and more powerful tools but then it didn’t sell and they discontinued for the most part. Then they are pushing forward with more powerful tools again and I hope they stay that way cause they are making some solid stuff especially this drill here.
      As a side note just for clarification. Ridgid’s name is licensed by TTI and they are the makers and developers of both Ryobi and Ridgid tools that you find on Home Depot shelves here in the US. AEG is the global name of the same tools. TTI also owns Milwaukee but milwaukees developement is independent from the other two from what I have seen. I am sure there is some sharing of R&D at the corporate level but I don’t think a single design team is behind all three brands.

      @@TinkerWithTools Not Ridgid's fault that Milwaukee is litigious sue-happy company. Also seems unlikely to be a coincidence to me that after Ridgid re-launched many of their power tools, suddenly the ones that used to kick M's ass in testing are now just a little lesser in power or in size. RIP Ridgid High torque impact wrench, killed by Milwaukee in the court room because Milsue-waukee couldn't let another brand beat it and others in the marketplace.

      @@GarenP You are absolutely right about that, that lawsuit was total BS. I think covid really messed up Ridgid's tool release it was postponed for over a year. We never got the Ridgid rivet gun we were teased, I ended up getting the AEG version, it's pretty nice and almost paid for itself.

    I'm glad I came across your content here, A really well-done load test and very good illustration, Thanks, man. After watching I think I'll be buying a couple of the 4amp and 8amp EXP's The 8amp should prove effective on the rigid 12 chainsaw. I am one of the RIGID tool collectors and have most of their cordless and corded power tools. So these batteries will find a good home here. I wonder when they are going to go all pouch construction? I think what I gathered here is the 4ampEXP is a pouch type internal and the other EXP's are the bigger cylinder type.

    • @TinkerWithTools
      @TinkerWithTools  11 днів тому

      Thanks for your comment. The 4ah EXP is a tabless cell battery. They are still cylindrical cells and not considered pouch cells. The only companies doing the pouch cells are DEWALT, Milwaukee and Flex. And even at that Milwaukee and DEWALT are also doing Tabless cell types. I would bet it’s more likely to see tabless cells taking over vs pouch.

    As an engineer I appreciate a well executed data driven evaluation. I especially appreciate the information about the internal construction differences and cell types. BTW I'm an electrical engineer and your explanation of electricity was fine. Good enough for the average Joe. :). As a side note, right now as I post this comment HD has the standard battery 4AH starter pack (2 batteries + a charger) on sale for about half the price of a single 4AH EXP. For most hobby work (which is my world now being retired) I'd say that's a better bargain overall and that's what I just bought yesterday. I may pick up one of the EXP batteries just for those times I'm in a really heavy demand task if I find the regular batteries lacking in any way.

    • @TinkerWithTools
      @TinkerWithTools  2 місяці тому

      Yeah the standard packs are going to be fine for a lot of work.

  • @mikem1436

    When looking at the high-performance tools, the box usually indicates the specification using a high-performance type battery. The reason is quite simple. The tool requires more power from the battery and the lower-performance batteries are unable to meet that demand. Going from a 2Ah battery to a 4Ah battery is going to deliver more power as it has twice as many cells. The voltage will drop off as the battery nears its cutoff point. The higher the current draw near this point will drop the voltage sooner. Since a 4Ah battery has twice the number of cells, the voltage drop in the cells will be less due to cells only having to provide 1/2 the amount of current versus the 2Ah battery.
    If someone is using a tool that does not need the power of a high-performance tool, buying the high-performance batteries is not going to be a big benefit as standard batteries are capable of providing the power need to run the tool at is maximum potential. The tool may run a little longer on a high-performance battery due to the fact it will not reach its cutoff point as quick as a standard battery.
    Another critical point is that most DYI or hobbyist do not use a tool such that they run down the battery to the point it needs a recharge. Someone using a standard drill with a fully charged standard 2Ah battery drilling a dozen 1/4" holes in wood is not going to need a high-performance battery.
    Most of the tool manufactures when bundling a tool and battery, will match up the tool with the appropriate type/size of battery.

    One area where I found the regular batteries almost unusable was when cutting with the dye grinder and cutoff wheel. Almost immediately the standard battery cut out. Ended up grabbing one of the high output batteries to correct it.

    I had to come back and check out this comparison video. Home Depot is running a crazy sale on 2x 18v, 8.0 Ah, Max Output EXP batteries for $149. While 1x 18v 4.0 Ah, Max Output EXP battery is $139. I had to make sure that I wasn't missing something.

    I think one interesting thing that happened was between the standard 4Ah battery and the 2Ah MO battery. It seemed like for shorter high demand tasks, the 2Ah MO battery slightly outperformed the standard 4Ah. On the slightly longer higher demand tasks, the standard 4Ah slightly out performed the 2Ah MO. My guess is the 2Ah MO has a very slightly higher instantaneous amp output but cant sustain that and as it cuts back, the standard starts to surpass it.

      I am not an expert by any means but your theory makes sense as a reason why. I have always thought about it like lifting an object. I may be able lift x number of pounds on my own briefly by giving it all I got but if I have a team lifter we are likely to make the job easier as we spread that weight over two people.

    Have you tried this 4 ah exp with the gen 1 and gen 2 subcompact drill and impact driver? I’m curious if this provides a good boost to any of those tools. The 2 ah batteries are great weight wise but they don’t always give the most zing.

    • @TinkerWithTools
      @TinkerWithTools  Місяць тому +2

      I haven't tested it with those specific tools and I think I only have the gen 2 version of those tools at the moment. But in general - I've seen drills experience more of a bump on a more premium battery than I have with an impact driver. I would expect that the sub compact drill would be more responsive to it.
