Johnny Rivers' greatest talent was finding promising acts and producing their records. There are many people that owe a debt to Johnny Rivers for their success.
Rivers has 9 top ten hits and 17 top forty hits on US charts from 1964 to 1977. He was also a regular at the Whiskey a Go-Go discotheque scene in Los Angeles.
Great review ! Poor side of town was written by Johnny Rivers .... Should be in hall of fame ... Such a long time performer .. and has held interest in the music industry with his catalog of songs for 65 yrs. THANKS !
Johnny Rivers is an underrated singer/guitarist/songwriter who had considerable success in the mid-'60s, though he started in the late '50s and scored hits into the '70s. This was an original song that went to #1 in late 1966. He had primarily had hits with cover songs, particularly Chuck Berry ("Memphis," "Maybelline"), Willie Dixon ("Seventh Son"), the Four Tops ("Baby, I Need Your Lovin'), and Smokey Robinson ("The Tracks of My Tears"). He also scored a major success with the great 1966 TV spy theme "Secret Agent Man" and with the hauntingly beautiful "Summer Rain." He had several more hits as well.
Love Johnny Rivers. His songs were always playing on the radio somewhere in the 60s.That voice is one of a kind.Love how he phrases his words and those productions. What a rabbit hole."Secret Agent man","Swayin to the music","Baby I Need Your Lovin","Mountain of Love","Summer Rain".
Johnny had a string of hits in the 60's. Baby I Need Your Lovin' Memphis Mountain of Love Another great voice, easily recognized on all his hits. Thanks Harri. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
I think Johnny Rivers is my favorite artist from the 60's. I adore this song!! Thank you Harri for your appreciation of this wonderful piece. I really love Summer Rain as well!💖💞💖
You are my favorite "Reactions" person on the platform. You feel the music but your analysis is always brilliant and spot on. Thank you for what you do for us ole Boomers.
Oh wow. This really takes me back. Johnny Rivers had so many hits in the 60s and he has such a soulful voice. Have seen him in concert and he is a fabulous entertainer. Loved Secret Agent Man and Mountain of Love, among others. Thank you Harri for reminding me how great our music was back in the day. 😊🇨🇦
Harri, not only was Rivers a great performer, he was one of the most influential people in the music industry in the '60s. Originally from New Orleans (the accent is the tone that you perceive), he formed his own music publishing company (he discovered Jimmy Webb) and record label, Soul City, to which he signed a group he re-named The 5th Dimension. The production values you rightly praise in "Poor Side" comes from his insistence on using only the best LA session musicians, including a guitarist named Glen Campbell. Of course, he matched Jimmy Webb with Campbell and they made musical history with songs like "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," "Witchita Lineman," and "Galveston." He introduced Lou Adler, who produced "Poor Side." to The Mamas & Papas. He then produced "California Dreamin'." It is a crime that Rivers has not been inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame!
love johnny - he's still with us at age 79. he was a regular at the whiskey a go go - the same place the DOORS honed their sound. and who can forget 'secret agent man' ? every one would sing secret asian man because that's what it sounded like he was singing. what a voice
He had such a distinctive voice. Loved it and still do. American Idol could only wish to find a voice like his. I still listen to his music. Thanks for reviewing this song. One of my favorites.
A friend Ben sang this tune in an Early Band I was in with a Guitar Player Walter. Johnny Rivers had alot of hits and did Covers of even The Four Tops - "Baby I need your Loving" His "Realization" Lp released in 1968 had some Hits "Summer Rain; The way we live, Look to your Soul & Going back to Big Sur." Johnny had hits with "Memphis; By the time I get to Phoenix, Secret Agent Man, Swayin to the Music & The tracks of my Tears," Johnny Rivers sold over 30 Million Lps, "Poor side of Town" was his only Song to reach #1 on the Billboard Charts. Oh, The days of Tube Microphone Pre-Amps Plugged into Analog Mixer Board and Routed to Analog Tape = A Very Hot Track. Excellent Classic, Thank You. :)
Agreed everything about this song is great. Loved it back in 66, still do. Great singer believe he's in Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Many great songs. Mountain of Love, Memphis, Secret Agent Man, Baby I need yr Loving Rocking Pneumonia and Boogie Woogie Flu. He's near 80 believe still performing love his voice!
Hi Harri, Thank you so much for doing my request; I never get tired of hearing this song - a true classic! This is what I refer to as a great record, meaning: great composition, performance, arrangement, production and recording. - Brooklyn Mike
This guy never gets the credit he deserves...the album "Realization" is brilliant...Look to you soul....Summer Rain, Something strange, What's the Difference, Going back to big Sur and his beautiful cover of Positively 4th street.
True love holds a huge bond with some. People make mistakes in life. To hold a grudge is not how to conquer true love. Your heart will lead your journey.
Johnny Rivers (and probably good lawyers) was one of the very few artists of the the time that had the foresight to copyright their compositions. With a copyright you have a gift that keeps on giving. He cut it with several members of The Wrecking Crew; Larry Knechtel, Joe Osborn and Hal Blaine.
I believe JR used the Wrecking Crew in the studio, like almost everyone else did back then. I've always thought I hear Leon Russell on piano back there. Great, beautiful tune.
When I was a kid in the early 60s , I heard my mom and dad listening to this man on the radio alot . Growing up I really liked Secret agent man , this song and others he did . Also Gary Pucket and the Union gap . Glad people are still playing these old songs , it reminds me of my parents and the old days . Good stuff .
Loved Johnny Rivers songs. You've gotta listen to "Swaying to the Music" and Mountain of Love" among others. Johnny was also a record producer. I believe that he produced the Fifth Demension's songs.
The Blossoms dude, research some more of their fantastic background vocal support of several artists. In my opinion, and I'm 76 , and I've certainly had much more than a small sampling of music in my lifetime, The Blossoms were totally beautiful in their background efforts. Awesome ladies !!
One of the smoothest and most recognized voices of the 60's and a very talented guitarist. He was a member of "The Wrecking Crew". Joe Osborn was his bass player on nearly everything he did.
53 years ago, when my son was 3 years of age, his very favorite song he played on his record player, was "Secret Agent Man" by Johnny Rivers. It's a Johnny Rivers classic!
Johnny Rivers (born John Henry Ramistella; November 7, 1942) was born in New York City... but his family moved to New Orleans, Louisiana when he was very young... so the soul comes naturally to him... he's 80 and sounds great and still tours... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Rivers
Have loved Johnny Rivers forever, his voice is wonderful 🤩 He has a lot of hits to check in that rabbit hole !! ** Check Billy Swan ‘I Can Help’ as well he really can sing Elvis tunes !!
Great song with Johnny's pop/country vocals. Little known fact: he did a guest appearance on the Beverly Hillbillies, one of my all-time favorite TV shows. Also, doing a guest appearance was Pat Boone. I guess Irene, Buddy, and gang kinda liked the Nashville side of things.
Thank you for listening to Johnny. A very underrated artist for sure. This song brings tears to my eyes. Life is hard, but anyone can make it......with the right person in their life. Truth.
Hari? you right on it- the beginning is a combination of Motown and Phil Spector production. The strings are perfect and I'm sure it a flute or such an instrument in combination. What's interesting about the addition of strings to a recording, was that after the Moody Blues literally used the London Philharmonic Orchestra for their seminal "Days Of Future Passed" album in '67, specifically their production people and their own keyboardist Mike Pinder, who was as versed as one could be then, with a unique piece of equipment called a mellotron. It is mistakenly referred to as an instrument, when in fact it is a keyboard looking thing, where the keys control prerecorded instrument sounds, especially strings. It wasn't practical to record and tour with an orchestra, so this miracle piece of equipment revolutionized the sounds of various multiple string instruments. Spector productions (Righteous Brothers, Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, Ronnie Spector etc.) are characterized by what came to be known in relation to his method, as 'the Wall Of Sound'- almost a bit echo-ish in nature. And Motown had their unique echo-ish sound for many of their recordings.
The character loved his lady, and poor can't always be choosy. It was a originally a Motown song, but Johnny remade (covered) it because there are many whites in the USA who also live in the ghetto. His song was a hit with many different groups of people.
Ahhh the wonderful request from easy listening Brooklyn Mike! Such a great tune from the 60's. Loved Johnny Rivers since his release of "Secret Agent Man"! Another one for the books Harri, great reaction my friend!
Johnny Rivers was very popular in the 1960's. His music was on the radio all the time. Saw him in a free concert in downtown Las Vegas. One of the best concerts I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot of performers in over 50+ years.
I used to listen to this album while I was lifting weights in my basement when I was 17. It was a great song because it touched on all of our adolescent loves.
Johnny had many hits back in the sixties ands early seventies. 2 Maybelline 3 Seventh Son 4 Muddy Water 5 Memphis 6 Mountain Of Love 7 Poor Side Of Town 8 Where Have Al The Flowers Gone 9 Baby I Need Your Lovin 10 Tracks Of My Tears 11 Secret Agent Man 12 Midnight Special 13 Summer Rain 14 Look To Your Soul 15 Rockin Pneumonia
You're right, Harri. great line ... Welcome back baby! It's ironic, Harri, that you mention cover hits because many of Johnny Rivers' hits were indeed covers of previously successful songs. This song (someone correct me if I'm mistaken) is the only hit Johnny wrote himself and was also Johnny's only #1! Johnny is still kicking it out today at 79 and looking good doing it!
my personal johnny rivers favorites: stand by me sea of heartbreak suzy q rockin pneumonia and boogy woogy flu all are great covers. his cover of sea of heartbreak is hard to find. Rockin pneumonia is my favorite. I would bet his cover of suzy q is what inspired ccr to do it.

Johnny Rivers is a great rabbit hole to go down. It's a disgrace that he hasn't been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Beautiful backing vocals from Darlene Love, Fanita James, and Jean King- AKA the Blossoms.
They are very good.
Thx. Didn’t know who they were.
These ladies had beautiful unique backing voices love them
The most beautiful backing voices ever heard angelic voices. These ladies were 💯 percent true talent 🙏👍

Yes, Mountain of Love was a great song. Loved his voice.
Johnny Rivers "Slow Dancing (swaying to the music)" is another one of his cool hits.
Yes, absolutely beautiful background vocals and the strings on this song are "fire".

Actually, he grew up in Baton Rouge, which has more country drawl than New Orleans. He's still considered one of the best things that came out of BR.
Didn't know that. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for this beautiful history on Johnny Rivers ! Can sing this one all day long 😻🇨🇦☮️🎶
