Johnny Rivers became famous for "Memphis" but any song he did was fire. Saw him about 9 years ago at the now closed BB King Blues Club in NYC and he was still fabulous.
Secret Agent Man was the theme song of a TV show in the 1960's. The show called Danger Man was British, but the title was changed to Secret Agent in the American market and the song was added. It starred Patrick McGoohan and was sort of the predecessor to The Prisoner which was an excellent psychological mystery type show.
johnny's songs were HUGE in the 60's. he crossed from rock to country stations flawlessly. one of those unmistakable voices you never forget. still kickin' at 81 years old. secret agent man was one of his big hits following all of the movies and tv shows in that 60's genre we all loved. it always sounded like he was saying secret asian man the way he sang it. maybe the japanese james bond ? !
"Secret Agent Man" is from the 1964 British TV show "Secret Agent" starring Patrick McGoohan. The show became a huge hit in both continents and only The American version of the opening credits contains the Johnny Rivers song "Secret Agent Man". The song was equally a huge hit and was always on the radio. I know, I was 10 years old then and I used to sing to it along with my Mom.
There was a TV show in the mid 60's called "Secret Agent" in America and "Danger Man" in the UK. The Johnny Rivers song "Secret Agent Man" was used as the theme song for the show and also became a #3 hit on Billboard. It's well worth checking out but be ready to have the song stuck in your head, especially the guitar riff. Johnny had a lot of hits and most of them were covers that Johnny took and made his own. In addition to Secret Agent Man check out "The Tracks of My Tears", "Summer Rain", "Swayin' to The Music (Slow Dancin')" and his incredible version of "Help Me Rhonda."
Secret Agent Man (title song for Secret Agent, premiered in the US in 1964) was sung by Johnny Rivers. Originally, Secret Agent was a British TV show playing in Britain under the name Danger Man & inspired by the James Bond craze. You will enjoy reacting to Johnny Rivers hits Baby, I Need Your Lovin', Swaying to the Music (Slow Dancin'), Mountain of Love, as well as Secret Agent Man. I enjoyed watching your comments & reactions to Poor Side of Town (my personal favorite Johnny Rivers song). Thank you for reacting to Johnny Rivers' music, a true legend.
Definitely my favorite Johnny Rivers song, also the first one I ever heard by him. I was very young when it came out and really liked it then but really love him now. Secret Agent Man was a theme song for the 60s show that was on TV then. Every once in a while I like to listen to easy listening rock and Johnny Rivers is an artist I go to. Thanks for your channel and reacting to this song.mBaby I need your login would be another one to do
Johnny Rivers touches your heart with this poignant ballad; its the true essence of heartache, longing, and social disparity. You can feel his sincerity of how much he loves this girl who did him wrong. But his love for her is everything. Great choice of songs as always - enjoyed your commentary.
Johnny Rivers' greatest talent was finding promising acts and producing their records. There are many people that owe a debt to Johnny Rivers for their success.
You may be too young to fully understand this, but Johnny Rivers hits me right smack in the middle of my most sensitive nostalgia receptors. Doesn't matter which song. Every time I hear a JR song I'm about 15 again, in the twilight of a warm summer night with lake waves audibly washing up on shore in the near distance, with a small fire and a few friends sitting around it, listening to a radio station on a small pre-boombox transistor radio.
Johnny Rivers, a little southern boy made good in the Big world of Rock n' Roll music, in the mid 1960s. Elvis, The Beach Boys, and The British Invasion all going against him. He cranked out some wonderful songs. "Memphis Tennessee" "Baby I Need Your Lovin'," "Secret Agent Man." The last one, may have been the most famous, because it was the theme song to a primetime TV series about a secret agent. Great guitar Riff in it, that is still instantly recognizable to this day.
It was used at the beginning of a TV show of the same title guessing off the top of my head secret agent Man was the show from around 1966 and it’s playing off of the 007 genre, which started and 63 with Sean Connery. As the 60s moved into the early 70s these artists adapted with the changing music to remain relevant which is why you see the change from the Beatles early material to the late 60s material it’s the same for Johnny Rivers and Linda Ronstadt. Summer Rain is an excellent song for Johnny rivers and shows how his talent continued to be relevant into the early 70s.
B J Thomas "Raindrops keep fallin" "Hooked on a feeling" "Rock and roll lullaby" "Somebody done somebody wrong song" Johnny's song "Slow dancing" is one of my favorites.
Just make your way through his greatest hits, you will appreciate his ability to arrange a piece of music and make it uniquely his own. He should be in the rock and roll hall of fame, If there was anything genuine about it.
I think the Secret Agent Man was written that time because that was a poplar genre in films and television. But hearing it as a kid before I figured it out I was thinking ….who is this Asian man and why is he being so secretive.
Love this song...Everything about it is amazing,Use to hear it as a little kid when my mom was hearing that oldie radio station KONO,Anyway Go Spurs Go!😁
Old person here. I never got the impression that she lefy HIM for the rich guy. Just that she left the poor side of town, while the writer silently loved her from afar. When Rich Guy tosses her aside, the writer picks her up and professes his love. I've always thought it was a sweet little song.
Excellent reaction. Just to correct your last point. It was Rivers who fought to get this song produced and released. The record company wanted him to continue to do covers of famous rock songs of the past which mirrored his popular live performances at The Whiskey A GoGo .
A sentimental favorite, thanks Shawn. Secret Asian Man was the first lick I learned on guitar, in the 60s. I mean Agent. Ooks. My bad. His face on the cover looks like Greg Lake, who also had half a face. Be that as it may, "Taxi" by Harri Chapin, would be a good follow up to this.
Great song. Nick Lowe does a very nice cover of this tune. it's a little more stripped down without the sixties production values. I actually prefer it to the original. Just my humble opinion, at any rate, keep up the good work.
"Baby I Need Your Loving" is another fine cover by Johnny.
"Mountain of Love" was another big hit for Johnny Rivers,.
Summer Rain is a beautiful song.
Rockin Pneumonia And The Boogie Woogie Flu
"Mountain of Love", great song by Johnny Rivers.
Slow Dancing and Summer Rain should be next.
That one is called Swayin’ To The Music!
Yes!!! Love that song...still have my 45
Both classics
Oh yes!! ❤
Johnny Rivers became famous for "Memphis" but any song he did was fire. Saw him about 9 years ago at the now closed BB King Blues Club in NYC and he was still fabulous.
Coming from the poor side of town myself, I have always loved this song.
Summer Rain is my other favorite.
So many great songs, but my favorite is "Secret Agent Man"!

Loved both shows. “Number 6 for number 2”😂
Summer Rain is also a great one but as someone said already , you can't go wrong with Johnny, he brings his personal charm to all his songs 😉

I love his cover of The Tracks of My Tears
Mountain of Love
Next up Has to be "Summer Rain". You'll love it.
Secret Agent Man was the theme song to the CBS television show in the sixties called Secret Agent.
What first comment Johnny Rivers the song is Summer Rain / secret agent Man is also really cool.
Saw him way back in the early 70's. Thanks for reviving the memories!
The production on this song is amazing.

By far my fav from him It takes me back every time
Secret Agent Man was the American version of the original British program, "Danger Man" which was the way it was sung in the UK.

My favorite of his.

"Baby I Need Your Lovin"
Oh right! "Secret Agent Man"! I'd forgotten 😮😊
A good song and story. Here are some other memorable tunes by Johnny;Memphis, Secret Agent Man,Swayin’ To The Music, and Baby I Need Your Lovin’!

Such a great composition, and the arrangement and production are top tier. I love Johnny's material from the late 60s.
I’ve loved this for years but watching you ‘get it’ brought me to tears You’re so good at this ❤
Picture it, America, Autumn 1966 and playing on the radio, "Poor Side of Town" by Jonny Rivers. Classic 😎⚾
Poor Side of Town made it to Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 November 12th 1966. Remember it clearly.
B J Thomas "Raindrops keep fallin" "Hooked on a feeling" "Rock and roll lullaby" "Somebody done somebody wrong song" Johnny's song "Slow dancing" is one of my favorites.
Now you are back in my younger teenage years (13 - 14). A long f**king time ago.
Coming from a big time Tool fan music does not always be complicated to be great This is proof
This was the theme song from Secret Agent, a TV series airing in the US '64-'66. That was a crazy futuristic series.
Try. Summer Rain beautiful song

😅 That was the running joke at the time it was a hit. Was he singing about a "secret Asian man"?
Well damn I guess SUMMER RAIN is next.
Check out "You Better Move On" & "Look to Your Soul" - both are top shelf. Thanks.
Johnny wrote this one I believe
👍👍💯❤️🔥🔥
As I recall, another artist's version of Secret Agent Man was in "Ace Ventura Pet Detective". It was okay, but nothing close to Johnny's rendition.
"Secret Agent Man." Please...
His version of tracks of my tears is also excellent
I actually prefer his version.
same goes for me - it's a crying shame he's not in the rock & Roll Hall Of Fame!@@andreaschmall5560
Suzy Q from his live at the Whiskey is great and predates CCRs version.
"Secret Agent Man" please.
This song should be revived as the National SIMP anthem.
For a different take on Secret Agent Man check out Hombre Secreto by The Plugz.
He didn't write many of his own songs. This song however is not one of those. It was also his best imo.
Great song. Nick Lowe does a very nice cover of this tune. it's a little more stripped down without the sixties production values. I actually prefer it to the original.
Just my humble opinion, at any rate, keep up the good work.
Who believes the next hire will be any better than the last 3?
Please react to the band Spirit.
The song "Mechanical World."
If they go NIT will everyone play, or will it be like minor bowl games missing starters afraid of injury?
Everybody reacts to this song, Summer Rain is a better song
