What I love is that they don't TELL us who the characters are. They show us. By showing the parents (or in Bender's case, the lack thereof) they perfectly set up each character's personality perfectly: all in the first could of minutes.
kirin-rex the director John Hughes was a true artist when it came to his movies, he really went into detail and its little things like the introduction of this movie that make it timeless.
There aren’t many like Hughes anymore. “Show, don’t tell” has completely disappeared as a concept in film (at least, big budget films, I could be wrong about the indie film genre so feel free to correct me). Hughes was always so brilliant at setting up his main characters as well as the supporting actors so that everything was beautifully cohesive and became classic movies. Everyone has their favorite movie(s) and this one is mine for sure
Yep 'show don't tell' is a concept many movie makers these days appear to have abandoned. This video illustrates the concept perfectly ua-cam.com/video/3FOzD4Sfgag/v-deo.htmlm0s
the car scene with alison made me kinda sad, she leaned over to say something or get some nice words, after sitting in the backrow despite the fact that the front seat was vacant, but she got nothing
In an earlier version of the script Bender was going to be dropped off by his abusive father, only to get caught up into an argument. They later changed it to instead him just walking there and almost getting hit by that car
Since he had attended that High School in real life, having a picture of John Kapelos at the beginning of the movie was a nice touch. It just shows how brilliant John Hughes was.
LOL. That high school doesn't exist. And the actor went to school in Canada. I wish what you said were true because that would have been awesome if the actor really did go to the high school.

Love the shots of the empty school at 7 in the morning on a gloomy, probably frigid Saturday. Every high-schooler would love nothing more than to be deep asleep at that time, yet these five have to endure an all-day, extremely boring detention with cranky Richard Vernon. It does bring back memories of my high school years, although I don't recall ever having to endure a detention of that length.
I had to look it up. The closest NWS station to Northbrook Ill, is in Chicago. Saturday March 24, 1984 , high 45 low 29, so yeah early morning was cold.
My junior year of high school I had Saturday School every other Saturday for a whole school year for the dumbest reason. End of my sophomore year, the school bus broke down and I was late to school. So it being the last week of school, I skipped after school detention. I didn't think they'd carry the punishment over to the next school year.

@@sha11235 Yeah, 1979 in San Diego. Bob Geldof wrote the song, "I Don't Like Mondays" about it for his band, Boomtown Rats. He regrets it, for making the shooter a bit famous.
Comin' from a kid who was born in '93 and grew up in the early '00s. I loved it for the most part, especially the music, but the '80s...OH MAN, I was I was growing up during that time. Gotta love the '80s!
5:47 Love Brian's face there. You can tell it's his first time in detention. He looks petrified. I had that exact same look when I was sent to detention in middle school for helping a friend stand up to a bully (of course, the bully got off the hook) I was like: Oh God, I gotta spend all day in a room with people that I don't know whatsoever.
March 24, 1984 - March 24, 2019 35 years ago on this very day, five strangers served Saturday detention at Shermer High School and got to know one another.
I wasn't even born in the 80's. I'm late 90's. But this is my favourite coming of age movie of all time. I could've used it when I went to school, I envy anybody who lived in the time and could relate to this movie. It still holds up today.
I LOVE the intro to the song at the beginning (0:04-0:13). The song itself is amazing, but the way they did the short drum solo/opening for the intro is awesome. Unfortunately there's nowhere to get that version, not even the BC soundtrack.
This version appeared on an A&M/Virgin Records 12" vinyl single. It also appeared on a compact disc of 80s music compilation in the early 2000s. That CD version was ill mastered with an incredible amount of boost to the high end frequencies and sounds rather quite thin with weak bass & punch. However, It did have the traditional snare drum "smack" lead in, which the Simple Minds album & the Breakfast Club Motion Picture Soundtrack contained. What we are hearing here was indeed an "early mix" of DON'T YOU FORGET ABOUT ME with the rhythm guitar tracks during the verses much higher in the mix, to the point it almost drowns out Jim Kerr's vocal at some short passages. It has no lead in snare drum "smack", but rather begins with the kick drum and crash cymbal hit sync. Also, the main, very distinguishable difference, which many people can't put their finger on, is this version was mastered with an INCREDIBLE amount of analogue compression & limitation, with a huge increase of low end frequencies boosted during the mastering process. That is the primary reason why this version, that appeared on the film's soundstrip, sounds so unbelievably boomy, punchy, bassy & just down right heavy frickin' duty! So, there you go boys & girls, we learn something new everyday, about a song that was recorded nearly 40 years ago, as of 2023! BolsaChicaRadio
I luckily have an interview for a decent job at this place tomorrow. It has not been a high school for decades. I thank god I have an awesome sister who helped get me the interview. I’ll be walking through these same doors tomorrow.
In the original script, her friend said she had mono which meant she didn't have to go to school. But I don't think her friend was mentioned in the actual movie.
LONG LIVE JOHN HUGHES!!! Love the opening scene especially the instrumental background music. Love the way the teenage characters are introduced. Even the teacher is messed up and not perfect or put together. Love the Brat Pack. A Favorite. Thanks. I did not know that was Anthony M. Hall's real Mom and Sister.
I am grateful to him for giving my cousin several scoring jobs, although not on this one. He did Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, Uncle Buck, Sixteen Candles, Weird Science, and Ferris Bueller's Day off.
Easily my favorite of John Hughes films, the film had no gratuitous sex and bad taste, just pure teenage angst. It was a big gamble in a generation of teen lust comedies that had no point but T &A. The Breakfast Club had a point: to tear down the walls of high school clicks and show that deep down, we are all the same. “We were brainwashed”. But John Hughes showed us the light. Rest in piece, my friend. We won’t forget about you.
" I want this room in the museum to be dedicated to great fathers. My father, Joe Jackson, Marvin Gaye sr, Tiger Wood's father, Serena William's father, The father that drops off Emilio Estavez in the Breakfast Club...." Teddy Perkins
To this day, I relate the most with Allison. A social outcast and basket case. A whole lot of similarities including how her parents treat her. Thus is my all time coming of age teen movie. Thank you John Houghes
I was in high school when this movie came out and I have to say John Hughes portrayed "us 1980's kids" with striking accuracy! Every character in this film I have personally seen in school!
Here's something to think about: When Andy sits near Claire, after asking if it's okay, do you think he's doing that to be with her? Like he has an interest in her? He certainly protects her from Bender and later on he points to her when Vernon instructs him to get the sodas, like he wants her to go with him so he can spend some alone time with her. Not that he'd rape her, but just try to get to know her.
I wish I could go back in time and see what it was like being a teenager in high school in the 80s, I was only 30 years too late to experience that haha
🤔 Now thinking about it, I'm surprised Allison's parents even drove her and picked her up to and from detention since they ignore her. I could see her walking herself to school like Bender. I can only imagine how that conversation went with her telling her parents she "had" Saturday Detention 😕
how brian and allison sit on one side of the room while bender andrew and claire sit on the other is also a detail to be pointed out. The popular people, the bullies and the jocks are often different than the outcasts and the smart kids
graduation for me was 1980, barely squeezed by with low c average. i was definitely a bender. yes it was like that in school alot of detention. I wouldn't trade those years for anything. music was great and the women were more unique. man i miss the 80s!
D Gambit Graduation for me was 2004, and I too barely graduated. I think I had a 1.6 average give or take .1. I wasn't even born when this movie came out, however I did manage to experience a small portion of the late 80's. I always enjoyed 80's music and films, however, I really miss the 90's!
oh... i see, i didn't hit.. read more yeah.. if you mean the Licence plate, yeah i noticed that plenty of times. i always thought that was weird because a) The mum is not a genius b) we didn't have personalized licence plates in those days but, yeah that was really really obvious
In a sense, I really feel sorry for Bender. You see that everyone else had parents, but Bender’s weren’t even there. That scene where Bender walks into the school in that funny fashion may seem funny at fist, but just tie that with the “What about you, Dad? F**k you” scene and you can see why. It indicates an abusive household, with abusive parents, and he just wants to break free.
This movie was ahead of its time and this was back in 1985 and still a classic and I really hope they don't remake this for the new generation who knows nothing. The 80s for us were easier for us growing up and we danced and sang and were enjoying life and there was no internet no school shootings and no social media to destroy people's lives and everyone was happier in those days and school was like school not a war zone like it is today. I feel bad for the the generations to come b/c they have no clue what they will face and everything is changing and nothing stays the same. Pretty soon people will ask what are shopping malls or movie theaters and video arcades and we all who grew up in the 80s lived in an innocent time and the 80s and 90s were both awesome decades and so was the year 2000 until 2001-2022 then everything changed. No values anymore or morals and people aren't living the American Dream anymore those days are gone forever, and now we live a new world and its the American Nightmare. I do stress if your kids don't like school homeschool them don't send them to school where they will be ripped apart every day and put on social media forcing themselves to kill themselves b/c nobody would help them*** I stress that kids today don't know the value of another person and they treat them like their nothing and there was bullying back in our generation but not as bad as is today. I grew up in the 80s and 90s and 2000 and they were good times and not so great times. I feel sorry for kids now in school and kids and young adults being bullied. Home school your kids if they don't like school. Better be safe than sorry. Our new generation doesn't know anything and they won't understand 20th century only what they know now. Its pretty sad and depressing.
BRIAN: Saturday, March 24, 1984. Shermer High School, Shermer, Illinois, 60062. Dear Mr. Vernon, we accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong. What we did was wrong. But we think you're crazy to make us write an essay telling you who we think we are. What do you care? You see us as you want to see us-in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. You see us as a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess and a criminal. Correct? That's the way we saw each other at 7:00 this morning. We were brainwashed.
if you look closely at 4:36, you can see that bender's walking with a limp, probably from his father hitting him or something, you can see he sort of tips to the right a bit
2:59 So is that Bender's own locker that he has written on, to keep people out? (Isn't that's what the lock is for?) Or is it some other kid's locker that he is denying them the use of? That shot confuses me :S
I graduated high school in 1983. I was so glad to get out of high school by the time this movie was even released. I went to college, and although i missed a lot of my friends and escaped a lot of bullies, i found this movie to be a part of my generation. I'm about to be 58 years old now, and i still see my generation as being the same pricks that we once hated. That being said. I hate the song. I love the message. Those days are gone forever, i should just let them go. The times have changed, but the song remains the same.
In the way that I see it:
John wanted respect.
Andrew wanted to apologize.
Brian wanted to fit in.
Alison wanted friends.
Claire wanted to break free.

and they did.
Come Monday, Allison went to school and shot the place up

Ay don't get me wrong I love the archie comics and wish they made a live action comedy series instead of drama and mystery, but riverdale was actually good and it had one of my favorite actors cole sprouse. But if they remake the breakfast club, well life is screwed
Shawna Wade oh please, the 80’s was way worse when it came to drugs than it is today
Many people call this just some cheesy movie from the 80s, but I believe this is a masterpiece, its one of the most realest high school movies ever
2:36 "I don't like Mondays." Got that right, especially now having to work everyday.
Garfield Day....rrooarr...rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrooarrrr!!
My cat Garfield actually sleeps longer on Mondays
I found out that is a quote from a high school killing that happened a few years before.
@@sha11235 Yeah, 1979 in San Diego. Bob Geldof wrote the song, "I Don't Like Mondays" about it for his band, Boomtown Rats. He regrets it, for making the shooter a bit famous.
What a great quote for a kid who doesn't like school.
I used this song in a video tribute for my dad's funeral. I'll never be able to watch The Breakfast Club without thinking about him ever again.
Apparently that is Anthony Michael hall's real mum and sister
Jessica Thompson you just found that out now.
Yeah, and also, his dad who picks him up is John Hughes, the director.
Jessica Thompson I knew that already, some people didn't :)
I just did as well.
Illinois license plate *EMC 2*
The opening scene itself is a masterpiece!
Fun fact: John Hugh’s favorite actor he worked with was Anthony Michael Hall.
He told hall to do this movie after sixteen candles.
The new wave song just makes you feel nostalgic
When they invent Time Traveling ...who's coming with me back to the 80s ?
We just a need a delorean and a bolt of lightning. Then we can go back in time
@@NovaABC haha
Let's go
Awesome piece of classic 80s loved it, and glad I was an 80s kid
Born 12/10/1985, I love the late 80's and 90's!
Comin' from a kid who was born in '93 and grew up in the early '00s. I loved it for the most part, especially the music, but the '80s...OH MAN, I was I was growing up during that time. Gotta love the '80s!
Luck son of a bitch. I was born in 2001. The early and mid 2000's were enjoyable, but the 2010's are garbage.
Damon0306 same here.. Born in 75. The eighties were a great time to be growing up in. I only wish I could relive it again. Such a classic movie btw.
Damon0306 did you sneak in to see this movie in the cinema
5:47 Love Brian's face there. You can tell it's his first time in detention. He looks petrified.
I had that exact same look when I was sent to detention in middle school for helping a friend stand up to a bully (of course, the bully got off the hook)
I was like: Oh God, I gotta spend all day in a room with people that I don't know whatsoever.
But, how was it?
As cliche as this will be, it’s unfortunate Hollywood doesn’t make movies like this anymore.
Admit it, you’re here because it’s March 24th, 2019 and because we’ve all seen this movie 1000 times lol
March 24, 1984 - March 24, 2019
35 years ago on this very day, five strangers served Saturday detention at Shermer High School and got to know one another.

Best intro ever. Love the quote by David Bowie. Movie never gets old.
That was suggested by Ally Sheedy, in fact
Did anyone notice how Claire's dad was looking at her in the car tho??
Almost as if he caught a funny idea.
Peter Short I thought the same shit lol
Peter Short i don't get it

Lot of people don't notice that the kids however much they thought they hated each other they all stood united against the adult without a word spoken
I luckily have an interview for a decent job at this place tomorrow. It has not been a high school for decades. I thank god I have an awesome sister who helped get me the interview. I’ll be walking through these same doors tomorrow.
Carl the janitor was man of the year in 1969. great detail.
Wait, if Claire got in trouble for shopping, then why didn't her friends that were shopping with her get sent to detention also........
Dominic F technically they never said that her friends went with her
I bet if their a sort of reunion movie, she'll be married with bender :D
never mind thought her dad said friends when she got out of the car.
I was going to say-I never heard any mention of going shopping with her friends specifically, just that she herself had skipped school to go shopping.
The Breakfast club met 33 years ago today
I just realized the car Brian’s mom is driving has license plate emc2. Like e=mc squared. That’s great lol.
ChakraZulu210 LOL...I dead ass came here to see if someone was going to mention that on this video.
lol my man....when Teddy mentioned him as one of the great fathers I died yo
Man, I wish I was a teen in the 80’s.. unfortunately i was born in 89..
Me too i was born 1998
I watched this movie every day for a couple of months during the pandemic and did not get tired of it,a true classic
Kind of funny how much young Emilio looks like his dad when his dad played in apocalypse now. They could be twins.
That is an awesome looking library.
2:48 Just now noticed the student in the middle is the janitor, Carl Reed. The actor, John Kalepos, actually went to this school!
Andrew's father later plays one of the detectives in The Fugitive
Ron Dean.
He also plays one of the Notre Dame Football Coaches in RUDY.
To this day, I relate the most with Allison. A social outcast and basket case. A whole lot of similarities including how her parents treat her. Thus is my all time coming of age teen movie. Thank you John Houghes
I love Bender's walk and how he just doesn't give a shit about almost being run over
I was in high school when this movie came out and I have to say John Hughes portrayed "us 1980's kids" with striking accuracy! Every character in this film I have personally seen in school!
Movie fact: That's Anthony Michael Hall's real-life Mom and Sister.
“Yeah “
Jady Annabel Andrews, I figured since I was like, “That little girl literally looks like the female version of him.” 👧🏻🙂
Here's something to think about: When Andy sits near Claire, after asking if it's okay, do you think he's doing that to be with her? Like he has an interest in her? He certainly protects her from Bender and later on he points to her when Vernon instructs him to get the sodas, like he wants her to go with him so he can spend some alone time with her. Not that he'd rape her, but just try to get to know her.
sha11235 they knew the same people and belonged to the same crowd so they were more comfortable with each other
I agree with ohwell94's comment. I think they were just in the same crowd and felt like friends.
@@lisadiconti Remember he ask Claire can she go to the party later on so they hung around the same crowd.
I wish I could go back in time and see what it was like being a teenager in high school in the 80s, I was only 30 years too late to experience that haha
It was like this. I was in high school at the time (freshman year).
“Turns out, THERE IS NO SHERMER ILLINOIS!!”
- Jay and Silent Bob
This movie is such a classic
🤔 Now thinking about it, I'm surprised Allison's parents even drove her and picked her up to and from detention since they ignore her. I could see her walking herself to school like Bender.
I can only imagine how that conversation went with her telling her parents she "had" Saturday Detention 😕
Emotionally neglectful parents. They do the minimum to take care of physical needs but don't give a shit about the rest.
how brian and allison sit on one side of the room while bender andrew and claire sit on the other is also a detail to be pointed out. The popular people, the bullies and the jocks are often different than the outcasts and the smart kids
I just realized today is breakfast club day!
There was a time in highschool that Andrew, Brian, and Bender became one.
graduation for me was 1980, barely squeezed by with low c average. i was definitely a bender. yes it was like that in school alot of detention.
I always enjoyed 80's music and films, however, I really miss the 90's!
i was born in 2002 and i miss the 80s

Who noticed the EMC2 reference at 4:07?
Look at the license plate
oh... i see,

yeah.. if you mean the Licence plate, yeah i noticed that plenty of times.
i always thought that was weird because
a) The mum is not a genius
b) we didn't have personalized licence plates in those days
but, yeah that was really really obvious
A John Hughes trademark: vanity plates (most of which reference his own work)
I remember watching this movie when it came out
Abubakarr Turay sameeeee My dad saw this movie in the cinema when it came out He was 15 or 16 and he loved it so much He saw it 4 times
Awesome movie love love it watch it over and over. It never gets old. I think most of us can relate
March 24, 2024 will mark 40 years that the Breakfast Club met for Saturday detention
Takes me back to my youth. Loved this movie back when I saw it in 87.
4:35 love this part because Bender doesn't care if he gets hit or not lol.
Because bender has a lousy homelife
On Saturday March 24th 1984
Epic background soundtrack throughout this opening scene!
I can't seem to find this version of the song. Do you know how to find it?
@@Sonic_X_Freddy_Lover001 I've been searching for it too.
It sounds like an instrumental variation.
Today is March 24th, 2024.
This was 40 years ago.
if you look closely at 4:36, you can see that bender's walking with a limp, probably from his father hitting him or something, you can see he sort of tips to the right a bit
One of my top 5 movies. Classic!
The Breakfast Club was released in 1985--in September of that year I started high-school. This opening scene & song are now part of my DNA.
2:59 So is that Bender's own locker that he has written on, to keep people out? (Isn't that's what the lock is for?) Or is it some other kid's locker that he is denying them the use of? That shot confuses me :S
Ἀντίγονος lool
Ἀντίγονος well there are kids in my high school who break in each others lockers
i don't even use my locker if someone would ask me where my locker is i wouldn't know
it belongs to bender because he puts a miniature guillotine on the locker that activates if its opened. plus the bag of marijuana in there.
That's Bender's locker
the first 15 minutes of the new power rangers movie are very very very similer to this opening scene.
Fun Fact: That's Anthony Michael Hall's real life mother and sister playing the mom and sister. Also, director John Hughes plays his dad at the end.
The times have changed, but the song remains the same.
actually love this movie
