this is touched on in the deleted scenes. In the movie Vernon sends Andrew and Allison to the soda machine in the teachers lounge to buy everyone drinks. there's an extended shot of everyone giving Andrew money for the sodas. Bender forces Brian to buy him a soda.
I love this movie, it has so many iconic details. Having Carl the Janitor be the man of the year back in 1969 is a clever detail, and makes you wonder how he got into his current position.
My first high school principal became a car salesman because the stress at the school was literally killing him. So health could have been a factor. Mental health also could have been a factor. A janitor I'd known from 4th grade through the end of high school (because he transferred locations) was a golden gloves boxer and a brilliant man who quite literally lived in the boiler room because something in his mental health prevented him from maintaining a stable home. He stayed with his sister during school breaks. I had a home life that bordered on being like Bender's, and Steve was one of the few adults in my life who looked out for me growing up.
Whats wrong with being a janitor, most people would be lucky to be a janitor at a high school, they get decent pay for their workload and great benefits, its funny people look down on them

Re: Bender not having a lunch: I noticed that one real quick because I had to go through Summer School between 8th and 9th grade without lunches. Thankfully that misadventure was only two weeks, but it still sucked and further fed into a bunch of disordered eating that I still deal with 20-odd years later. Allison's first "line": I swear you can see the moment Andrew crushes on her (or that it becomes apparent that he liked her) in response to that "HAH!" She definitely didn't need that makeover, because Andrew already liked her from the moment she balked at Claire. (Edit - I gagged a little because I didn't even notice him cleaning his teeth with that brow brush) The scene of Vernon giving all those extra Saturdays to Bender: Look in Bender's eyes during that scene. He actually *does* want those Saturdays because they get him away from his family. Like pay close attention to when Vernon asks if he wants another day. There's a beat of silence and you can see sort of a mounting desperation, almost panic, in his eyes before he says yes. There was a cry for help there that Vernon was too far up his own ass to see because he didn't give a shit about his students. Judd Nelson knocked that role out of the park.
There's also the little hesitation before that one "Yes!" Once you know Bender's backstory, you can tell he's not seeing Vernon in that moment at all but is back at home with his real dad shouting and threatening him. His voice in that moment seems so close to tears that if Vernon had leaned in even a little, Bender would have either cringed and curled up defensively or actively struck Vernon, either of which would create all new problems.
I fell in love with Judd Nelson when I watched him in his role as Bender. A little trivia, Judd Nelson was the oldest member of The Breakfast Club. He was 24 at the time. It was obvious that Bender was from the wrong side of the tracks. His Father must have started abusing him at a very early age because when Vernon started his rant in the closet, Bender fell back in terror. Interestingly enough, when Vernon said, "Who are they going to believe if you hit me", the other kids were witnesses to Vernon's abuse & Bender is most like still a minor, even though he looks older because he shows a tough exterior. Although Allison looked like a bag lady, her choice of lunch items was something only a person with means would waste their money on. Both Allison & Bender preferred to be in school, in detention, on the weekend, because it was a better alternative to being at home. Brian probably enjoyed this detention also because it was probably the first time he talked with schoolmates about something other than their studies. I think Andrew liked Allison just because she was different than all the other girls he hung around with. He asked Claire if she was going to Stubby's party but didn't even expect the others to be invited. Only Claire was in his click so Allison intrigued Andrew but he couldn't see her face. It was also obvious that while Vernon had a position of authority at the HS, no one, including the Teachers, respected him. He, like Bender's Father, was an insecure bully. The only differences between them were a college degree & the ability to bully multiple people vs the Wife & the Son. I always wonder & would like to think that they did indeed stay friends. I missed the multiple uses of Shermer HS, the Library rules, Andrews bird, & Claire's brush. For the latter one, I thought Claire probably had multiple brushes in her purse.
I agree with you, Andrew gave her that interested smile the moment she said "Ha!". He was instantly into her. By the way, to ease your mind, albiet a year after your post (love the interweb!) I really enjoy watching the Breakfast Club movie, especially the part where they all attempt to escape. However, their plan to make a run for it was almost ruined by Mr. Vernon, who seemed to have a magical ability to appear out of nowhere no matter which direction they went. He seems to magically appear until they manage to nearly escape getting caught by Mr. Vernon but instead run into a locked door blocking their only way out!
I'm glad you guys are very perceptive regarding this movie. In 1985, when this came out, I was a youngster. Well, I was 25. I was very much into Howard Jones, tears for fears, Simple Minds, of course, Police, Yaz, the Fixx, and ABC, Pet Shop Boys, Bronski beat, and for a rest after too much partying, (X), Brian Eno....Music for Airports. And the Starck Club in Dallas Texas where I lived. I was a bit of a smartass, i would, many times, ask my boss, "Why"... Do we have to do. Whatever, this way. She did consider my way, a few times. Hope you enjoyed a bit of what that era was like for me. Thank you so much for letting me relive a bit of it... & That's just one facet of it. Remember, a diamond has many facets. i hope your life does too. I'm 61 now.
Watched in theaters and graduated in 1985. Watched further dozens of times and remains my favorite 80’s movie for its relevance and substance. Correction: Dick was snooping Teachers files, Mr. Tierny, in the basement. Though, with all my fandom, there was a couple here I didn’t know. Thanks.
I heard the reason why John Hughes made a cameo as Brian's Dad is because he loved Anthony Michael Hall and felt kind of like his dad. So that's why he appeared as Brian's Dad.
@@alanmurray5963 John Hughes loved doing special license plates for his movies. Watch Ferris Buller's Day Off, all the license plates in the movie are referencing John Hughes other movies.
Also another Reason is that Anthony was more so going be John Hughes Chosen 1 as in meaning that he would be in alot of John Hughes movies as ya know as some Directors have 1 Actor or Actress that is in some role in every Movie by that Director/Producer. As in why Michael Keaton was Tim Burton's Chosen 1 for being BATMAN n BEETLEJUICE! As like that!
9:31 Bender has an admiration for Carl the Janitor. In every scene (and in the deleted scenes, found elsewhere in UA-cam) in which Bender interacts with Carl, he shows a comfortable smile, definitely no antagonism there. And, of course, the scene marked here, he laughs and says "See you next Saturday" as if he's specifically looking forward to seeing Carl.
Yes did catch this and love his interactions with Carl because they are realistic. Students have a better relationship with the Janitors than most adults in the school. They are almost always nice, know your name, are straightforward, and help you get in anywhere you need to go in the school.
There were talks of a sequel. Some of the cast members have mentioned they knew of some ideas John Hughes had. Molly Ringwald mentioned at one point hearing there was an actual script written.
Another thing nobody noticed: Emilio Estevez's Breakfast Club character reprises in the episode of Two and a half Men whence Andrew dies on Charlie(his real life brother)'s deck with a barely smoked cigar in his mouth.
At 10:23, the narration says that the janitor caught the VP snooping through students private records. I don't think so. They are clearly in the basement. Vernon is looking at a record jacket for someone named "Mr Tierney." Perhaps he was being sarcastic calling a student "mister," but I believe he was looking at staff records. That's why they were stored in the basement. Student records are kept in the administrative offices upstairs.
The first time I heard "Mess with the bull you get the horns"... And I've said it ever sense. I LOVE this movie. R.I.P. John Hughes. I miss these movies...lol.
How about the fact that Vernon kept giving detentions to Bender as he might have been aware of Bender's family abuse and wanted him to stay away from home as much as possible. It might show that Vernon did care a little about Bender, while still maintaining his strict persona.
Given the way Vernon acted through the whole movie, I don't believe that was the case. I think Carl probably understood better. But it really seemed Bender kept provoking him on purpose for potentially that reason.
Fun Facts: Main North HS, where this movie and Ferris Bueler's Day off- were filmed. The Library was NOT the actual library of that school. They built the Library set in the school's gymnasium as the actual library was too small for filming. (also: my mom did her student teaching at that school and my cousins all went to it's sister school Main West)
This means that details like the library reading room rules were placed there strictly for the benefit of the audience. There's also some mystery about the large stone sculpture that gets hit with the olive loaf. Maybe you know something about that? Was it real?
@@davidallen5535 No, that was brought in for the production. As I'd mentioned the school's actual library was only one story and much too small for filming. Plus the school had been closed for two years before production began.
How you know you've seen The Breakfast Club too many times? I've memorized the zip code and am asking how anyone could possibly have missed any of these things.
I watched Breakfast Club probably over 100 times in college. Brian is dropped off in a car in the morning with the license plate "EMC2". That's one you missed.
how could you not notice Bender didn't have a lunch? or that Alison doesn't speak for so long...that's her whole character. now the graffiti on the rules, paper...that's a true "thing you didn't notice".
I remember the first time I noticed Andrew flip off Vernon I had to rewind and watch it again to make sure I saw it correctly at that point I probably had watched it 5 or 6 times I can never get tired of the movie although I would love to see an uncut version of the film I've seen a few deleted scenes that I think would have made the movie great
It's so reassuring knowing that Judd's parents are absolutely wonderful (obviously I don't know them personally) compared to that of his character John Bender's parents. Not many of us (including myself) are as fortunate enough to grow up in safe, caring, stable, loving, secure and thoughtful homes. 🥺💔
I watch this movie as a binge-watch in this order: The Breakfast Club St. Elmo's Fire The Big Chill The Cemetary Club They take you from your teens to your twenties, to your late 30s-early 40s, & to your 60s, & show the trials & tribulations of each age group. I love them all.
I REALLY want the original actors to do a sequel. It’s THEIR kids that are in trouble and after the kids are dropped off for THEIR detentions, they hang out in the bleachers of football stadium. They might sneak into school for old times sake. What you do you think?
Some of these are good, but the "quiet Allison" one? Come on now. _Literally everybody_ noticed that. In fact, for those first few segments, her perpetual silence was arguably her most _prominent trait._ It was the "elephant in the room", which made her "Ha!" so shocking when she finally uttered it.
FYI...John Hughes did have a speaking role in the movie when he tells AMH to buckle up when he gets int the car at 9:28. It was cut from the final release.
I think he was snooping through his co-workers (faculty and staff) HR private records, not his students, which makes him even worse. As Vice-Principal, it's likely nothing in a student's records would be withheld from him.
Another detail about the shattering glass: It's made to look like it's wire reinforced safety glass. It's NOT of course or it would not have fallen like it does in the movie.
I never noticed the Library Rules. I noticed that a younger Carl was once in a school photograph with other male students wearing jackets and ties. Made me wonder, "what happened to him" that he grew up to be the school janitor? I noticed that John Bender didn't have a lunch. Perhaps if Andy had already warmed up to John, he would have offered John one of his sandwiches ('cause his Mom had packed either two of three of them).
Me neither n remember always: " TO MAINTAIN A PLEASENT ATMOSPHERE, TO WHICH TO STUDY WE ASK ALL STUDENTS TO BLOW EACH OTHER!" KIDA KINKY IS THE LIBRARY! ;) ;p
I absolutely love this movie. I've watched it so many times, I've lost count. I think i can relate to each one of them. I was/am each one of them in one way or another.
Shermer High School architecture is called "brutalist design." If you think that's bad, look up what the front of Stephen Leacock C I looks like. Mike Myers went there too, just a year behind me. 5:45
I also think showing the burnt locker explains Carl having a personal interest in Brian. He would have had to clean that up. I forget his prediction for Brian's future in the awesome exteended outtake where he tells them where they'll be in 10 years, it's been a while since I last saw it, but I feel like he wasn't as harsh on him.
Also the line on the locker “I don’t like Mondays” Is from a female school shooter in the 70s who opened fire on an elementary school she lived across the street from. She had a very rough life They asked her why she did it and she said: “I don’t like Mondays”
Brian's flare gun did not destroy the elephant. The elephant he made did not work, so he failed class. He knew his parents would not accept that and he had a gun in his locker to possibly end his life. Apparently he could not get hold of a real gun so he had a flare gun which went off in his locker.
As an English teacher, naturally I notice that the letters on the wall designating the Librarian's Selections (or Librarians' Selections would be fine too) are missing an apostrophe (or the apostrophe is too small to be visible).
OMG I refuse to believe that Claire did not have surplus brushes and used the same one to do Ally's makeup. Claire would not do her new BFF dirty that way😭
Carl the janitor catches Vernon going through the STAFF'S records, not the students'. Another interesting tidbit is that the woman and little girl who play Brian's mom and sister are in fact his real-life mom and sister.
I always thought that Bender intentionally racked up detention to avoid his home life. I assumed he couldn't just leave on the weekend to get away, but he HAS to go to Saturday detention. Just my humble opinion.
@@junkboxxxxxx It can be mildly amused in a detached way. I imagine Carl’s smiling to himself about something only he knows or notices because he’s more aware than people realize.
Never noticed before that there’s what appears to be a confederate flag in the flag holder right after the glass break scene as he’s running through the library 🤯

Or the Johnsons' license plate:
ILLINOIS *EMC 2*
Except Mary was really Anthony's *half* sister. Same mom, different dads.

I'm 61 now.
Ah the Starck Club - ever visit the bathroom behind the downstairs bar?
Watched in theaters and graduated in 1985. Watched further dozens of times and remains my favorite 80’s movie for its relevance and substance.
Correction: Dick was snooping Teachers files, Mr. Tierny, in the basement. Though, with all my fandom, there was a couple here I didn’t know. Thanks.
I heard the reason why John Hughes made a cameo as Brian's Dad is because he loved Anthony Michael Hall and felt kind of like his dad. So that's why he appeared as Brian's Dad.
Brian's mom is Anthony Michael Hall's mom, Mercedes. 😮
Brian's Dad's licence plate reads E = mc2🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
@@SchofieldAJ and after Johnny Depp got the role he became Tim Burton's #1 chose.
And Brian was friends with Carl - he calls out Brian's name at the beginning.
I had a college teacher that made us write about this movie. I turned in 15 pages.
So did mine lol
FUN FACT: When Anthony Michael Hall was dropped off for detention, the woman playing his mother was his real mom and his sister.
There should have been a follow-up. I'd like to know what happens to the characters after this day.
I read that it went back to normal that monday
There were talks of a sequel. Some of the cast members have mentioned they knew of some ideas John Hughes had. Molly Ringwald mentioned at one point hearing there was an actual script written.
God, no, sequels are the worst. What movie sequel didn't ruin the original?
No sequel please, but fan fiction would be ok.
@@Rupert14 terminator 2, aliens to name a couple.
They Only Met Once But It Changed There Lives Forever one of my favorite movie taglines of all time
We don't see how/if it does.
Another thing nobody noticed: Emilio Estevez's Breakfast Club character reprises in the episode of Two and a half Men whence Andrew dies on Charlie(his real life brother)'s deck with a barely smoked cigar in his mouth.
The mom and little sister in the car picking up Brian is the real life family of Anthony Michael Hall
Except the girl playing Brian's sister was only his HALF-sister.
@@KBAFourthtime he was adopted by his mother’s husband. So that would make Mary his sister.
Nope. You have to be beyond eternal optimist to not see that Vernon was just a straight up dick through and through.
The rule sign has graffiti. It says at the top
"To maintain a pleasant atmosphere in which to study, we ask students to please... blow each other" 😂
ive seen this movie over 100 times and can quote the whole thing and i still didnt know half of these! well done!
how could you not notice Bender didn't have a lunch?
or that Alison doesn't speak for so long...that's her whole character.
now the graffiti on the rules, paper...that's a true "thing you didn't notice".
I remember the first time I noticed Andrew flip off Vernon I had to rewind and watch it again to make sure I saw it correctly at that point I probably had watched it 5 or 6 times I can never get tired of the movie although I would love to see an uncut version of the film I've seen a few deleted scenes that I think would have made the movie great
This is my favorite high school of all time and I never put together the destroyed locker shown was Brian's! So thank you for pointing that out.
The only one I missed was Andy flipping the bird. I have seen this countless times since its release, too.
I love how in Not Another Teen Movie they do the 2 months part to a funny funny homage to the movie.
I'm really surprised that someone hasn't popped up and said, "Did you also notice that there are no cellphones in the movie?" 😂
I watch this movie as a binge-watch in this order:
The Breakfast Club
St. Elmo's Fire
The Big Chill
The Cemetary Club
They take you from your teens to your twenties, to your late 30s-early 40s, & to your 60s, & show the trials & tribulations of each age group.
This was great.I went to a drive in theater & seen this movie when it came out.I was 13.Thanks for the memories
That’s so cool :0
Shermer, IL is John Hughes's Castle Rock, ME.
FYI...John Hughes did have a speaking role in the movie when he tells AMH to buckle up when he gets int the car at 9:28. It was cut from the final release.
Brilliant details I never noticed before ! Thanks !
I think he was snooping through his co-workers (faculty and staff) HR private records, not his students, which makes him even worse. As Vice-Principal, it's likely nothing in a student's records would be withheld from him.
Pretty sure that everyone noticed *Bender* didn't have any lunch given that *Claire* asked, _"Where's your lunch?"_
Another detail about the shattering glass: It's made to look like it's wire reinforced safety glass. It's NOT of course or it would not have fallen like it does in the movie.
What would it take to win the title of man of the year? Achievements? A student vote?
Allison's delayed start was the first thing that I noticed
Has anyone noticed that Brian weares his sweater inside out?
Brian probably wore it right side out to school the day before.
He also wears 2 different socks
Great video. Thanks for posting this. Have a nice day.
I grew up with this movie! Reminds me exactly of my high school in Lancaster, PA!
The only thing I didn't actually notice was Andrew flipping off Vernon, and I find that so funny!!!
Was Bender from Futurama named after Bender from this movie?
Love this classic movie ❤️
I heard Michael Anthony Hall’s mom in this movie is his actual mother and that’s his actual sister :)
No wonder he looked so annoyed and the sister played it off so perfectly. Gave me chills 🤣
Man - I can't wait until I am old enough to feel ways about stuff...
Allison actually looked better before the makeover.
Me neither n remember always: " TO MAINTAIN A PLEASENT ATMOSPHERE, TO WHICH TO STUDY WE ASK ALL STUDENTS TO BLOW EACH OTHER!"
KIDA KINKY IS THE LIBRARY!
in the scene where Allison give Brian his wallet back, when he is looking thru it you can see a condom on his wallet, he's optimistic
You didn't mention that Brian's (Anthony Michael Hall) mom and sister in the car scene are his actual mom and sister IRL.
As a kid I didn't understand what getting high was. So that part definately flew over my head lol.
Is mr Vernon ever happy about anything? Guy threatened to beat a student
This movie means so much to me I love it
Well when John says to Brian "What are WE having?" it is kind of obvious he has no lunch
I've probably seen this movie at least 20 times and didn't notice Andrew flipping him off
The 'library' they were filmed in was a set built in the gymnasium that you saw in the other Hughes films.
"Bender doesn't have a lunch" is supposed to be a "small detail" that we might not have noticed?? Um, it's extremely obvious and nobody missed it.
One of my favorite coming of age film
What is the hand written rule in the library. I missed that one.
Also the line on the locker “I don’t like Mondays”
Is from a female school shooter in the 70s who opened fire on an elementary school she lived across the street from.
She had a very rough life
They asked her why she did it and she said: “I don’t like Mondays”
Yakkety Yak, by the Coasters is about teenage defiance and backtalk towards a parent.
Brian's flare gun did not destroy the elephant. The elephant he made did not work, so he failed class. He knew his parents would not accept that and he had a gun in his locker to possibly end his life. Apparently he could not get hold of a real gun so he had a flare gun which went off in his locker.
I like “Eat. My. Shorts.”
Claire would not do her new BFF dirty that way😭
What was so specific about the name "Shermer High School" (besides movies specified)
The brain is wearing different socks.
The only ones who didn’t notice Bender didn’t have a lunch, were people who didn’t watch the movie.
The "bemused" school janitor? He doesn't look confused or confounded at all.
I do not think that word means what you think it means.
He also wasn’t going through the students secret records, like she said. He was clearly going through records pertaining to other teachers.
You are right and an extra point for quoting Inigo Montoya. 😊
Most people think bemused is like "being amused"
@@junkboxxxxxx
It can be mildly amused in a detached way. I imagine Carl’s smiling to himself about something only he knows or notices because he’s more aware than people realize.
One of my favs...there is so much missed in this.
Never noticed before that there’s what appears to be a confederate flag in the flag holder right after the glass break scene as he’s running through the library 🤯
Every high school needs a breakfast club 🍞🚪
Holy heck, the blow each other on the rules....never caught that one. And Bender not having a lunch is all the ouch.
What's John Hughes best film?
Plains Trains and Automobiles, and the Breakfast Club are my favourite Hughes films 🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️😂😂😂🇨🇮
Probably this one but back when l used to get high it was Weird Science.
It's now a known fact that All of Hughes teen epics were set in the same universe (even sixteen candles)
