Great, now we're just like China. Did anyone hear that part about retrieving images off of home security cameras?
Easy there. It is creepy as hell, but they were talking about sources for images, not direct pipes. Like someone robs your house, you give the cops an image from your security cam and they can search from there. Just saying that it isn't tied to only one type of input.
Which is a stupid as thing for the report to even mention the way they did.

Arguments like "I'm supportive of this because we use it responsibly" are naive and dangerous because the law isn't there for that user, it's there to prevent nefarious users. And no, forget it if it's under the umbrella of a single organisation. It's either got to be open source or fully auditable. Seems scary how little consideration appears to have been given to the wider consequences of this system

When I was a police explorer in the 1970's, I walked into a detective's office and saw at least one hundred high school yearbooks (multiple copies) going back for many years.
Years later I realized that the police had the names and “mug shots” and general locations of tens of thousands of innocent children who had never committed any crime.
There are too many right-wing extremists, war hawks, psychopaths and sociopaths in government. It's only a matter of time before they start scanning jr. high school yearbooks into their systems.
If it is not expressly prohibited, they can and will do it.
Incidentally, the year books were still in their shipping packages and labels so much so that I realized that the publisher had automatically shipped the year books to the police.

I also live in Washington County, Oregon. I do not think this is a privacy issue at all.
I work in AI, I've also written a thesis on personal metadata. This is the key everyone should be concerned about 3:16 "We are not sending pictures to the cloud, only measurements" The human eye recognizes another person based on these same measurements. So the point is moot. This is about the laws that protect people through their personal data, and how to get around it. AI will turn your walk, your mannerisms, your nervous ticks, that way you laugh, your associations to others, your travel patterns, your clothing choices into "measurements" and will use it to uniquely identity you wherever you go, and none of this algorithm based metadata will be considered 'personal' , therefore fair game. Be warned over fuzzy warm terms like 'measurements'

Facial Recognition Technology will only ever be as good as it’s inventor/creator/engineer/programmers. Some of these creative geniuses also claim that life as we know it is just an algorithmic simulation on a much grander scale.
With that said, maybe we should put it to a vote whether the cops should be qualified to play with such a toy like this

I think so much has changed over the last few decades some are good and some are bad, but as technology progresses there has to be a level of healthy skepticism to ask the question to whom in society does it really benefit, is it the whole community at large or only a few at the top gets the piece of the pie and what are the mechanism to balance out those groups in a fair and just manner, these sort of technology needs to be evaluated, debated and put into a vote by the public because it is concerning to see how much power the government have on the individuals nowadays even in a democratic society.
I don't know if you guys have known the patterns already, first they introduced finger prints globally (by globalists), then non-consent full body searches and now this so called 'Facial Recognition' technology, so what's next implant a chip into our brain. I think any individuals in society ought to ask and start questioning when is enough because it is starting to get ridiculous and intrusive not the betterment for society though.
And get this, why then almost all the government (no matter what type of government structure they are, e.g. monarchy, democracy, oligarchy, authoritarianism, or totalitarianism) in the world wants Facial Recognition technology at the same approximate time period and why they all claimed to be for so called 'prevention for terrorism act' and why implemented so quickly without public consultation, evaluated, debated and voted, does it really solves terrorism or a new smart way of pushing a agenda 21 or depopulation for the few at the top? Why do all government not matter what type they are seemed to agree with such intrusive technology though, who is behind the curtain on these decision? Because out privacy is as fragile as our existence. We the people need to ask questions and question them to the very essence of it.

Violation of privacy. The more we allow big tech to violate our privacy the more power and leeway you give the big tech monopolies which could (and in my as well as many other peoples opinions) eventually lead us into a 'Big Brother is Watching' society as described in the book 1984 by George Orwell.
