  • I've been salmon fishing with spinners lately, the Angling Addict Fishing Co Steelhead And Salmon Spinners since they have been working so well for me. I wanted to switch up the technique a bit just to see if it may help entice a bite from one a Coho or Chinook.... and it clearly worked! my last fish was a tank and it's always good to see some big healthy natives in the system.
    I basically started low on the sandy river near lewis and clark state recreational area and then began to work my way up the river, making stops at areas like glenn Otto, Dabney, and Oxbow Park. Though I was seeing more rolling fish lower in the river, I was having more success with the bite up a bit higher in the system.
    As of roughly a week or so ago, the hatchery had only seen a return of just over 70 Coho at Cedar Creek. With the amount of pressure from fishermen on the river, most of us would be expecting to be seeing or hearing about more catches. Which now has many anglers wondering where the fish have gone.... well it seems to me that if the fish haven't returned to the hatchery yet and that the anglers fishing cedar creek haven't been yarding them in tells me that they are around but just not really biting. Unfortunately I lost 3-4 fish while I was fishing a couple days ago and was looking forward to seeing if I had finally located some hatchery coho...
    With the rain that is forecasted I am assuming this river will raise quite a bit and may get these fish on the move, but considering how dirty this river can get, it may make fishing a bit more difficult for most.
    Oregon Chinook fishing has been rather decent this year, even though ODFW is stating that it is a poor return... What are your thoughts?
    Some of the coastal tribs have been putting out some really nice native Chinook Salmon and I thing I just may need to make a trip and get in on the action before our 2019 salmon season is over. Though, I am already gearing up and dreaming about winter steelhead fishing!!

    Thanks for putting in the work to find the coho...I live 1/4 mile from the Clack at Cross Park and am itching to get my line wet, but Willamette Falls counts are low. Do you prefer that pink squid skirt over other colors? I know you probably havent done enough to say if one color combo is better than another. Tight lines brother!

    • @AnglingAddictsPNW
      @AnglingAddictsPNW  4 роки тому +4

      Doug Sparks - hey Doug, it’s my pleasure. I’m out there like everyone else trying to put in the work to find some fish.
      The counts ARE low, it’s disappointing.
      The pink and green has been the most effective for me but I wouldn’t say it’s the best, it is just the best for the specific conditions that I use it in. I fish with every spinner that I make but wouldn’t feel confident enough in saying any combo is better than the other but that’s only because we never really know what the color has to do with a fish biting. We typically catch something on a color and become more confident in it, then start using it more than other colors, therefor catching more fish on that color, and then begins the “this color/combo is better”
      I could be wrong but I’ve caught fish first cast with crazy color combos... did it have anything to do with the color? I have no clue lol.
      Hope you find yourself some fish.
      Winter steelhead season is on its way and I’m super excited for it.
      Good luck 🎣

    Hey there Nick,... that was a pretty big sucker....I was fishing up in BC years ago and caught some big suckers as well along with some pretty big squaw fish... around 5 lbs.... never ate them ... but Ive heard in the southern states,.. they smoke them and heard they’re quite good ... I’m not banking on that ... because this story comes from someone that ate just about anything....lol ...

    • @AnglingAddictsPNW
      @AnglingAddictsPNW  4 роки тому +1

      Dan M - hey Dan, It really depends on how much rain we actually get but by the sound of it I’d imagine that the river will be high and dirty. If we do get an inch of rain tonight then it’s probably going to be blown out. Though the mountain will be getting snow I think the freezing level is high enough that we will be getting a lot of water dumped into that river. I’m going to go take a look in the morning.

    Can you not keep wild chinook on the sandy? Also what color or type of your lures would you recommend? Caught my biggest chinook yesterday it was about 25 pounds also caught a wild coho. My dad hooked a giant chum salmon and it broke him off. About half an hour later I went downstream to fish with a lure and I snagged my dad's line. I handlined the chum in about 5 ft off the bank and the hook popped out. Still, fun to see a big chum I thought they were a small fish.

    • @AnglingAddictsPNW
      @AnglingAddictsPNW  4 роки тому +2

      Fredthegamer SCHRARDER - no you cannot keep wild chinook on the Sandy.. that’s why I’m ALWAYS checking the regs before I fish somewhere. Some places you can, others you can’t. Oh man chum are cool looking. That’s an awesome story about hooking your dads line lol. I don’t really recommend one color over the other, too many conditions to consider. I like pinks, purples, blues, and chartreuse but I throw them all.

    Do you prefer using single hooks rather than treble on spinners? Great video!

    • @AnglingAddictsPNW
      @AnglingAddictsPNW  4 роки тому

      James Bain - honestly I don’t really prefer one over the other. Trebles snag less but don’t always get a good clean hookset. Single hooks, in my opinion, get a better and cleaner hookset & snag less. For me it comes down to the type of water and what my chances of catching native fish are. If there are a lot of natives and unkeepable fish I use single hook mostly. .. cleaner hookset and easier to release
