That's just gorgeous. Natural edge pieces are my favourite.
You just have an artist's eye when it comes to bowl and vase design, Andy. The most subtle differences/changes, can have a huge impact on the overall look of a piece and you always nail it. I'm envious! Great job!
Phil
Thanks so much Phil.. hope your doing OK my friend take care 👍
I was astonished at the shape of the edge when you stopped the lathe to turn the piece. On the screen the shape of the piece of wood was not obvious. I admire your ability to spot the potential lurking in the most unpromising (to me) materials. Your natural edge forms are my favourites, and this undulant edge with the striking pale layer under the bark is outstanding.
Thanks so much 👍

good one andy as all ways every time you turn and burn dude
I have a question unrelated to this piece.
Is texturing pieces with half dry apoxy on it, by pressing patterns into it, a thing? Would that work? Maybe add a thin layer of oil on top of the unset apoxy, so it doesn't grab and stick to what you press into it for pattern?
Well done
I admire the work you do. This piece is outstanding. What is Yew (besides beautiful)? : - )
Thankyou
1) Aren't you worried about bending the axle? 2) Is yew sawdust poisonous if it gets in your mouth?
1)no 2)If eaten, the foliage or berry seeds of a yew tree or hedge can induce a number of side effects which can be fatal if left untreated.
I always love it when you work with Yew, it's such a pretty wood. This was definitely worth the wobble! Well done. . .

Oh please, Wood Yew shut up…….
Sorry lol
Yes wood. First time hearing about it. Must be worth a good bit of change.
that wobble had me worried there for a while
Simply gorgeous! I love projects like this where you don’t need stain or color, you just provide oil and let the wood speak for itself.
I always find myself wondering about the output from the lathe. For some of these projects with such unique color and grain, I’d be fascinated to see you take the larger wood-curls and peelings, combine and compress the heck out of them, and then resin and grind it into something unique. Dunno if that would work well or not, but might be fun to try!
Years ago my dad use a lathe, he would take the wood chips and shaving and mix them with resin and what he turned out were amazing. 😊
Ah perfect timing. These videos always help me relax before I sleep. Thanks for making them :)
Yup. 👍. Your videos are just Wonderful 🙃 🙂. 🙋
Yeah, we know. You go to sleep and make one of your own. 😉😉
Yew is one of my favorite woods, there isn't much out there that challenges the grain and colour of yew, imo.
I did a chainsaw job for a big house with quite substantial grounds several years ago. They wanted a few trees removed for an access road they were putting in for something. One of the trees was an ornamental yew tree apparently from Japan. They didn't care much about it and had no real use for the wood outside of burning it. They let me take as much of it as I could fit in the van, and after 2 years of drying and curing was rewarded with one of the craziest grained and coloured woods I have ever encountered! 😀
It looks like a tulip! The color is really pretty and I love the light/white edge on it. It’s really beautiful! Well done 💜
YEW made another great choice with this bowl! i could tell from the start this would be a great live edge piece and that’s exactly what yew had in mind as well. what a beauty
Magnificent yew! The entire vessel is stunning, and the way the sapwood's vividly contrasting color enhances the natural edge is spectacular! You've done it again, Andy!
Thanks 👍
I love the dimensions: how you kept it rather firm. It underlines the rough edge. The simple form adds to the bold and sturdy character of the wood. Nice!
YOU made this YEW look awesome!!!
❤️❤️❤️👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
…sorry, couldn’t resist! 😅
that's Awesomeness right there Andy ! Thumbs up as always
Thanks Doug 👍
that was almost half a tree at the start! turned out amazing as usual thanks for making these videos ❤️🏴
O conheci hoje. Parabéns pelo lindo trabalho.
Sou do Brasil ( 🇧🇷).
Infinita saúde pra você e todos!
I just love watching you work.
That’s a beautiful bowl. Could you make a dough or bread bowl?
Very nice Andy. It is definitely a one off, so you could say it is a Yewnique piece.
I have one word for this " Magnificent".
That's a beautiful piece of wood given the perfect shape to show it off. Not much delays Hubby on his way out in the morning, but if I get the notification that you've uploaded, it's surprising how slowly he's able to get ready (without taking an eye off the screen lol). He's as in awe of your talent as I am, and he used to be a tree surgeon, so he loves the wood for its own sake to start with. Seeing it becoming a work of art on top of its natural beauty is the icing on his very big cake!
Thanks.... glad he likes the vids 👍
I would be concerned about the toxicity of Yew. “The yew tree (Taxus baccata) and a related species common to gardeners, Japanese yew (Taxus cuspidata) is known to be one of the most poisonous woody plants in the world, with all components of the tree, excepting the fleshy red part of the berry containing lethal amounts of taxine, a toxic alkaloid found in the yew”
Concerned how? He isn't eating it
😂 That's just what I was going to put
@@AndyPhillipWoodturning nice woodworking but be careful of the wood dust and ensure gloves. It can be absorbed via skin and inhaling the dust is also toxic.
Just amazing Andy, this why I love woodturing. Keep the dream alive. 🏆🏆🏆.Ernie smith from brisbane Australia
Thanks Ernie 👍
Sangat alami
The wobble you called turned out great loved the color 👍👍👍
Thankyou ... Yew always turns out cool 👍
Don't ask what Yew can do for you but what you can make out of yew
Меня это видео гипнотизирует, я на это смотрю и я под гипнозом, оторвтся не могу
Brilliant as always, but can't lie: I was a little sad when you took that 'ring' off of the middle. Would have made this an even more unique and interesting piece. Maybe something to play with in the future?
I was hoping the dark red at the beginning was what the wood color was going to be when finished. I guess it must have been some kind of sealer? Regardless that 'turned' out really nice.
I didn't mean to make it wobble.... oops
That is astonishingly beautiful.
It is just amazing wood. Thank you so much for sharing
I watch all of your shows when I can or save them to watch later. You do awesome work. Beautiful pieces.
Thank you
👍👍👍🔥🔥🔥🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦
Wobbling because not centered.
Love it but ,its yew and so much waste , could the shavings be mixed with resin and compressed into a block to make something else
I make fire bricks with any shavings .. so It doesn't go to waste
I sat on my first cheap lathe to stop it jumping around as the slowest speed was 600 rpm. Great video as always. Rob
A beautiful piece
Thanks
That is stunning! How many hours does it take to go from log to vase?
Thanks.. think this was a couple of days but filming always makes it take longer ..
Your lathe has some way to go to match my washing-machine leaping around the kitchen when it goes into spin mode. 😜
🤣
That is so beautiful 👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks Rita
What a lovely vase! It looks like a tulip with that beautiful natural edge and its shape.
Thanks
WOW that grain looks like a topographic map. GREAT turn, yew did a GREAT job! !! !!!
Gloves with a lathe? 😰
Blah blah blah
Another beautiful gem Andy. Great job!
Wonderous. The way you work that piece make all the growth line come out beautifully! Congratulation.
Thankyou
Beautiful. Love the grain.💖💖💖
Yew killed it.😎😎😎👍👍👍
Glad Yew liked it 👍
Отличная ваза , с красивой текстурой!.
What do you do with all those fine pieces 🤔?
Do you mean the shavings?
@@AndyPhillipWoodturning no I mean the actual sculpture (sorry if it's not a sculpture)
I sell some pieces from my website andyphillip.com 👍
Andy Phillips and yew. Doesn't get better than that.
😅👍
Nice. I have a beautiful lamp that my uncle turned out of a piece of Pacific Yew, forty years ago. I found some yew when I was hand logging on the BC coast. Gave some to my father who gave it to my uncle. My mom bought the lamp and gave it to my wife and I when we got married. It has been my bedside lamp for a long time.
This is a very beautiful vase. I like it
Thankyou
Amazing piece, Andy! Really fantastic work! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
How long did it take you to create this beauty? I can't even imagine.
Probably a couple of days ..
To what extent do you know the final shape before starting work? Is it all fixed in your mind from the moment it’s on the lathe? Or do you play it by ear?
Just let the wood decide as I turn it
@@AndyPhillipWoodturning How wonderful!
Great turning with a beautiful result.
Awesome as always 👍🏽 Have you ever used the shavings with resin and made something with it? Wondering what happens to all the stuff that falls.
Thanks .. I have previously used shavings in resin but never really liked what it turned out like .. I recently started making fire blocks to burn in the winter with the waste
@@AndyPhillipWoodturning Thanks for answering! I never even thought of fire blocks. Makes sense.
Oooh, can you do a vid on the fire blocks, Andy. That would be so interesting.
Farklı bir tasarım oldu, ellerinize sağlık...👏🙂
Excelente trabajo 👍, saludos desde México
Thanks 👍
That is an absolutely stunning vase! Very good potential and well realized! An excellent finished piece from a master at finding the potential in a piece of wood!
I would like to ask, is there a term for the redness that was on part of the cut piece at the start of the video or not?😊👍
Thanks ... don't think there is a name for it .. it was the end I treated with pva when I initially cut the wood a couple of years ago
Percect my dear friends...
This is stunning. Love the grain, the color and the live edge. Beautiful job. 💕😊💕
Thanks 👍
Holy cow!!! When you said it made your lathe wobble you weren't joking!!!!
Very beautiful...
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this has to be the biggest log you've turned.😅
I think it is .. I've turned larger pieces but not out of balance logs 👍
@@AndyPhillipWoodturning Also that Yew grain is just exquisite. Gonna have to pick some up for myself.😅
Outstanding!!!!
I couldn't wait to see what that end grain was going to look like and when you were done it came very beautiful Andy.
Thanks Alan 👍
Beautiful 😍
Love the form and the natural edge!
Thanks 👍

Beautiful!
Thanks
As always, very beautiful and elegant! Did your hands shake after polishing with such vibrations?! :)
For such a lovely piece Yew turned 🎖🎖🎖Triple Star Rating 🤩
A wonderful video and final product! Just beautiful.
The red color the wood presented in the beginning was stunning, what caused it to be so vibrant?
Thanks... the red endgrain was a side I covered with pva when I first cut the log a couple of years ago
Wonderful piece, Andy……Yew is so, so beautiful, and this one is no exception…….
Just one request. Could I please suggest that you provide some dimensions of the wood that you use in these videos?
Lucky woodturner who found such a perfect piece of yew ! No cracks , thin softwood , ideal growth , where the hell does it come from ? In western France you surely won''t find such one ! ( I would have previously removed much for a better balance and also not even thought of cutting the endgrain facing me , no easy task but obviously the better idea !) , congratulations !
I've had a vision for the last 55 years of a timber frame log and stone house that I designed when I was 15. This vase would fit perfectly into it in a place of honor in the foyer (though I'll never build the house, not needing the enormous debt it would generate, not at 70 years old).
I think YEW did a great job...
Ill see myself out.
You should try turning some Australian Iron Bark, then some Mulga root.
“Yew made my lathe wobble.” Worst pick up line I’ve seen in ages. Gotta try it at the next makers meet up.
Every coring would make my backdoor pucker, no matter how sure of the depth I am.
beautiful work...👍👍
Thanks Peter 👍
3:45 ooh, do one with rings, maybe like a turned Saturn globe!!!!
That's a beautiful bowl made from Yew.👌👌👍👍
Could you stop the lathe more often, please? I would love to see how the wood looks unfinished, which parts go away first etc. Please, please, pretty please?
A thing of beauty Andy
I’m just gob smacked. 😳
It's so beautiful ❣️ I especially love the white strip at the top wavy edge❣️
Красиво, как всегда!!!
Thanks 👍
When installing your face plate spinning by hand on your lathe and finding the heavy ends adjust your face plate as needed
I had a chance to turn Yew once, and I loved it. Lots of character and color, close grained and hard, took a nice polish. I think you should have send that piece of wood to me, just like we talked about . . . 😉
What tool do you use to hollow out?
I use a couple if carbides by Simon hope woodturning
This guy's gotta be a dad from all his thumbnail dad jokes.
I'm speechless...that is absolutely gorgeous!
That is beautiful. Great work
the wood didnt make the lathe wobble. YOU not putting it on the lathe in a balanced way made it wobble. YOU did that. be more safe with the lathe, dude. theyll hurt you bad
