Great video, thanks! I've been using A7S III for 3 months and I plan to buy 2 more to speed up my workflow. It's the best camera for my type of work and I even sold (well, still selling, no one wants to buy it yet) all of my peasant Panasonic camera gear (GH5s, G7 and plenty of premium lenses, speedboosters etc.) to completely switch to Sony. However, there are some shortcomings. 1. Display quality is below average. Even my old Panasonic G7 has a better screen. It's shocking that Sony manages to mess important aspects like this up. I STRONGLY disagree with your comment regarding a fully articulating screen. Everyone who shoots video has been waiting for this for years and this was the most asked feature from Sony (confirmed by the company itself). For instance, many video shooters do not consider Sony A1 because it has a tilt screen. I really wanted A1 too but that screen is a dealbreaker for my type of work. 2. 4K HDMI info display is still extremely crippled. Once you turn the info display on, you get a smaller screen on the HDMI monitor with worse quality. For instance, GH5s gives you a full screen 4K HDMI info display experience which is EXTREMELY important. Again, Sony's little cripple hammer creeps in. 3. No 4K crop video mode (APS-C) due to small megapixel count. That's understandable but this is one of my favorite features, especially with lenses that have long minimum focusing distance. 5. No active image stabilization in 4K/120p. It would be really nice to have but maybe I'm asking too much. 6. The second base dual ISO setting should be lower. Now it starts at 12800 (A1 starts at about 6000). Having said all of this, Sony A7S III is still the best camera I've used for video!
Thank you! I agree, it is the best camera for that kind of videos, although I haven's tested the A1 yet. Regarding, the rotating screens, the more I use them, the more I hate them to be honest :) I much prefer tilting screens for the reasons that I've explained here: ua-cam.com/video/xcndnKHx7us/v-deo.html I don't see any advantages of rotating screens unless I am in front of the camera, which is very rare in my case. Panasonic conducted a big research about that when they were releasing S1, concluding that both photo and video professionals prefer tilting screens. Then came the vloggers who pushed rotating screens... unfortunately for me. I am actually considering A1 instead of A7S III because of the stills capabilities and also the tilting screen.
@@TheHybridShooter Rotating screens are incredibly useful if you're a one man band shooting interviews. With the camera beside you, you can't angle a tilting screen towards you, but you can with a rotating screen. If Sony a7s3 is meant for content creators, then Sony a6100, Canon M50, Panasonic GH4, and Fuji XT3 are more enough to do UA-cam videos. In fact, even these cameras are overkill. Sony a7s3 is overly expensive for content creators and are meant for UA-camrs with deep pocket with 100k+ subscribers who think they can up their games. Pretty soon, you will see professional youtubers bragging about using RED Komodo, Sony A1, FX3 and FX6 or Canon R1 or Fuji GFX 100s. Honestly, these high-end gears only show me why I go back to the basics in term of filming my video content and helping those with only $500 to $1000 budget camera gears for youtube content videos. The truth is, even Samsung S8 or iPhone 8 or 1080p micro4/3 or APSC cameras are more than enough for youtube videos. However, if you are talking about making Independent films, well, that is a whole matter altogether. By the way, Sony a7s3 is not Netflix approved but the soon-to-be announced Sony FX3 might be, so hold on your money pocket.
I strongly disagree. That is extremely generalized and therefore meaningless comment. There is a ton of high-quality content on UA-cam that deserves A7S III. On the other hand, I couldn’t care less about Netflix certification. It became just a bragging point and marketing slogan after S1H certification.
@@TheHybridShooter We will see when Sony FX3 comes out. I can guarantee you Sony a7s3 sale will go down and FX3 will be the content creators camera of choice. Sony a7s3 will be on sale for $500 to $1000 less in a year and will be in the used market for $1000 to $1500 less. Mark my word. It always happen with Sony cameras. I own a7r3 and used to own a7s2 and I have experienced it first hand.
That is completely different topic than your original comment. I don't think so. Take a look at Sony A7 III price 3 years later... A7R III and A7S II where nowhere near as requested as A7 III or A7S III.
@@TheHybridShooter Sony a7iii already losing value. Now, I see people talking about going with a7c instead because of the flippy screen. Sony a7s3 will share the same fate when Sony FX3 comes out. When I buy camera, I made sure to keep them forever. I own Sony a7r3, a6100, FS700r, Fuji XT3, Panasonic GH4, Nikon d7000, Sony a5100, a5000 and Sigma FP. Every single camera that I mentioned have a place in my heart. Do you know why? I bought most of them used, for 1/3 to 1/10 price and they are excellent cameras. I am saving up money to buy Sony FX6 in five years.
Already, same fate, really? A7 III AD price finally went down by 15% 3 years after the release... No other mainstream digital camera has ever held it's value so well. Suit yourself, gear hoarding might be a great hobby, I haven't tried that yet.
Great video mate! Wish I could afford an a7S III, but I’ll settle with my a7C for now - I love it! Also, a7C is better for a hybrid shooter anyway I guess.
Interesting camera. Because of the new ergonomics, touch screen finally, decent grip etc., Sony is more and more competitive ergonomically. It is my opinion that because of all the new ergonomics, this camera could also be used in general purpose photography if one doesn't need a high resolution sensor. Which 90% of the time one doesn't with the right lens etc. Still, my question to you is, could you hold this camera in your hands all day long without getting cramps or hand pain? Thanks for a great review.
You're welcome! As I have said in the video, I actually prefer Gen3 (A7 III) grip so I have never had issues with that. A7S III grip is also completely fine for me. I still wouldn't recommend it primarily for photography there are much more suitable cameras for that.
I have to disagree that flip screen is the way to go. They are already getting flack for putting the old tilt screen on the A1. That camera would have been the best thing ever if they just added the flips screen. Let’s hope Sony adds S cinetone to the A7SIII
Only people discussing on the internet are bashing Sony for not using rotating screen on A1. People who will actually buy A1s are very glad that it has more practical tilting screen. Professional photographers would never buy it with rotating screen. It gives use hope that the whole rotating screen thing might be over soon.
@@TheHybridShooter I hope it doesn’t. I own the A7III and the A7SIII. The flip screen make more sense. I wish Sony would just make the model with both and give the customer a choice.
I don't think that it makes any sense for behind the camera use, as I explained it here: ua-cam.com/video/xcndnKHx7us/v-deo.html Two screen versions are not possible due to production cost and construction compromises.
Thanks for your excellent review. Very nice images in my opinion. The A7III studio shots look very good as well! I like your grading choices with just enough contrast in the shadows as well as enough saturation.
About the cards and All-Intra. That's not correct. You can use V90 SD cards to shoot All-Intra at 24, 30, 60 and 25, 50 fps. Just not All-Intra 100 or 120fps, (but you can via the S&Q mode)
@@TheHybridShooter No, it is expensive. It is not relative. Relative to rich and famous people, maybe? Honestly, unless you make a living doing videography, it is still a heavy investment. I saw your lenses and cameras, and honestly, if you think $10k (for camera & lenses) is not alot for content creators, I think you are in a la-la land. This camera is meant for those who actually earn a living with this profession. Instead of getting this camera, I would have gone with FX6 or the new to be released FX3. Forget, the in-between pro-consumer camera like a7s3. If you really want to up your game, go with $50k+ camera like Sony Venice or Arri or RED.
Apparently, you have no idea how much money can a successful content creator make. Content creation is a living for those people. I have exactly opposite view on this. I embrace "start with what you have" approach, but if somebody makes a lot of money from videos he / she should invest in appropriate gear to provide best possible quality for the audience. Buy whatever you want to, it's your opinion, but there is no need to force it on other people.
@@TheHybridShooter I have no idea how much content creators make? Are you kidding me, I was one of the first person to make a video on how much youtubers make 9 years ago! I think your UA-cam fame went over your head. We all started with a humble beginning then we forgot where we came from. Never lose yourself in all this short fame and fortune thing, my friend. By the way, there are many youtube channels using Canon 80d like Casey Neistat with over 5 million subscribers. It is not the camera gears to make a youtuber reach 1 million subscribers, it is the creative content and the personality of the creator. I have observed this for years. Most camera centric youtubers never reach 1 million subscribers, only Tony & Chelsea, and Jared Polin. Do you know why? Personality. That's the secret formula.
@@educatetube That is completely off-topic. Sorry, but I am not interested in your moralizing and UA-cam success analysis. I didn't mean myself, UA-cam is not my main profession / income source. I meant channels with high production value documentary / education content.
Thank you! It doesn't belong on this specific camera, where the operator will be behind the camera. I am fine with rotating screen on A7C or ZV-1 for example.
I don't care about dual ISO, I only care about the level of noise, which can be seen in the video. The low light performance is great, but it is very similar to A7 III for example, so I see no reason to mention dual ISO.
@Soso Melodies You completely misunderstood what I wrote. "Smoother" is also very bad term in this case, as it commonly describes digital noise reduction.
@@TheHybridShooter to correct both of you. Second iso kicks in at different iso for every profile you use. And the level of noise is much lower when it does kick in so you should care. It performs better at higher iso than a7iii
@@timjanjeselnik4680 To correct your correction, no, not really. I will explain that in another video. A7III benefits a lot from noise compression achieved by downsampling. What I meant is that I don't care about technology behind the results that much. A lot of cameras use multiple native ISO levels, it became a bit of spec warrior's slogan lately, some manufacturers brag about it more than others. I prefer showing actual results.
Haha, to each his own... I personally love the flip screen and wouldn't want to go back to the tilt-only screen. If possible, Sony should use a flip/tilt hybrid like on the Fuji XT100 and Panasonic S1H.
Sure, but there are cameras where the rotating screen belongs, such as A7C or ZV-1, and where it doesn’t, such as A1 or A7S III. S1H screen mechanism is huge and it would spoil the whole packaging, so that’s probably the worst option.
@CONQUER FITNESS I know, I found out after the video was done, I wrote it in the pinned comment. Those are mostly vloggers, this is not a vlogging camera. Many also find the flip screen to be a great annoyance, due to the reasons stated here: ua-cam.com/video/xcndnKHx7us/v-deo.html
@@TheHybridShooter as someone who likes the flip screen, I strongly agree with you since I use this camera mainly for paid video work, the flip up screen would have been so much better than a flip out screen. I have to turn on the level because I’m always accidentally tilting the camera off axis.

That is not very relevant comparison mainly due to resolution difference. 250 Mbps ALL-I captures a lot more data per pixel. H.265 is not heavily compressed, in the sense that it looses quality, it is just more efficiently compressed.
Doesn’t anyone know how you can get the A7siii to show under -2.0 (EV) and not hurt start blinking when EV is -2.0 Meaning it shows -2.7 EV up to -3.0EV
@@TheHybridShooter absolutely! I agree, but when something still does what you want it to do why replace it? If I was needing a new camera I might be all over the A7SIII. I guess the best way of putting it is there are much better refrigerators than the one I have now, but the one I have now does what I need it to do. I hope that makes sense. I love my GH5, I’ve followed your channel for a bit and I think you know the GH5 although starting to show its age is a pretty capable camera for the price.
That is a philosophical question. For me personally, using the latest technology of any kind shows me new possibilities that are not always recognizable until I actually use it... Just picked one of these up to replace my old a7 III I’m selling to a buddy. I mostly shoot low light music videos, so the 4k120 and “dual iso” is awesome. Also I feel like the AF is noticeably faster, but I could be wrong. Haven’t shot much with it, but I see this lasting me at least a few years.
The AF is not necessarily faster if you set both to the fastest settings, but it is smarter and more adjustable.
what you think of sony a1? any comparison or review yet? is this better than a1?
It might be slightly better for video, but as a hybrid camera, the a1 is far ahead. And it should, as the price suggests 😛
I haven't tested the A1 yet, so I can't comment on that.
The a7C is such an underrated camera
@@ryanvacation7319 yeah, I love it!
Hello Mate, your reviews are very practical thus very useful. One of best channels with gear tests.
Thank you!
Love the quality this camera produces.
I wonder if we will see some of the characteristics of this camera to Sony a7000.
No, it is unlikely that Sony will make "higher-end" APS-C camera and if the do so, it will be focus on high-speed shooting.
@@TheHybridShooter Probably. But if their next model wont have good ibis and 4k60 10 bit at least, it wont sell in my opinion.
It will sell, because it will be cheaper. Back in 2016 Sony said that they don't intend to make high-end APS-C camera in the future.
how can you not like the flip out screen?
Very easily, I explained it here: ua-cam.com/video/xcndnKHx7us/v-deo.html
I don't think that it makes any sense for behind the camera use, as I explained it here: ua-cam.com/video/xcndnKHx7us/v-deo.html
Two screen versions are not possible due to production cost and construction compromises.
How is the 1080p quality??
I don't know, I never shoot 1080p.
So the GH5 basically still has higher resolution screen?
Yes, unfortunately.
Thanks for your excellent review. Very nice images in my opinion. The A7III studio shots look very good as well! I like your grading choices with just enough contrast in the shadows as well as enough saturation.
Thank you, I appreciate your feedback!
About the cards and All-Intra. That's not correct. You can use V90 SD cards to shoot All-Intra at 24, 30, 60 and 25, 50 fps. Just not All-Intra 100 or 120fps, (but you can via the S&Q mode)
I wrote that in the pinned comment.
how is the aliasing performance with this camera
There are no artifacts of moiré at all.
@@TheHybridShooter really? Because I'm seeing some aliasing on the fences at the 28 second mark? Is that just due to compression from youtube
That is not an aliasing, just a moving part of the picture. I looked at it zoomed-in and there are no artifacts.
@@TheHybridShooter I see. Thanks for your info. This will be my next purchase.
About time you came out with this review. It’s the only one that matters
Thank you!
Excellent work my friend. Always a pleasure viewing your videos ❤️
Thank you!
In large screen videos, video quality any decrease compare to a7iii ?(24.2 MP vs 12 MP). I know in photo image quality will decrease.
I have talked about that in the video.
Way too pricey for nonprofessional use... It is a really great camera though! I will keep on waiting for the Sony A7IV.
"Pricey" is always a relative terms, depends on the budget and icome.
No I am not kidding, what you wrote definitely suggested that you don't know how much big UA-camrs earn.
I also didn't mean vlog channels, those are indeed completely fine with entry-level cameras. I meant channels with high production value documentary / education content.
I wish it had DCI 4K also. ☹️ Also custom WB while in memory recall.
I couldn't disagree more about the screen not belonging on a video camera, but the rest of the video was spot on.
Thank you! It doesn't belong on this specific camera, where the operator will be behind the camera. I am fine with rotating screen on A7C or ZV-1 for example.
You didn't mention the dual ISO kicks in above 12800 to make a smoother footage.
I don't care about dual ISO, I only care about the level of noise, which can be seen in the video. The low light performance is great, but it is very similar to A7 III for example, so I see no reason to mention dual ISO.
@@TheHybridShooter Video footage will look smoother above 12800 but you don't care? Ok
You got it? It with my a7iii a perfect pair 😎
S1H screen mechanism is huge and it would spoil the whole packaging, so that’s probably the worst option.
i shoot all-I with my v90 kingston card.. with the exception of 4k120 all-i
Nice review..
Thank you!
good stuff
its easy to add sharpness but to remove its a whole other story , so don't ever put sharpness in-camera ever
Thank you! I agree, I never use in-camera sharpening either.
Hey you mentioned you can only shoot all intra with cf cards which is incorrect. V90 cards work just fine. Just turn off the proxy recording option.
I have proxy recording turned off, but you are right, some UHS-II V90 cards can record ALL-I.
@@TheHybridShooter thats not what you said in the video. Also many find the flip out screen to be a great addition to the a7 lineup.
Wow the s5 can do internal 6k h.265 @200mbs pretty wild the all intra only hits 250 in 25fps (in all-i) I know they're not apple to apples and h.265 is heavily compressed. But wow thought the 25fps hit the 400mbs
That is not very relevant comparison mainly due to resolution difference. 250 Mbps ALL-I captures a lot more data per pixel. H.265 is not heavily compressed, in the sense that it looses quality, it is just more efficiently compressed.
@@TheHybridShooter ohhh I see. I thought what really matter was the Mbps.
@@nyrubin That is just a small part of everything that matters.
Doesn’t anyone know how you can get the A7siii to show under -2.0 (EV) and not hurt start blinking when EV is -2.0
Meaning it shows -2.7 EV up to -3.0EV
Uforutantely, I don't understand what you are asking.
Haha awesome tittle. No hype though all beast! 💪✌
If I can buy camera for only video I WILL BUY A7S3 !
Everything is good except that I don't like the colour output from it.
Color preproduction is probably my most favorite thing about A7S III, depends on the preferences.
Perfect camera
I dunno, I’m still very happy with my GH5
A7S III is completely different level though.
I also hope that it makes sense :)
By 2021 standards, I can't really say that I like M43 "look" that much anymore, but it is still a capable camera.
@@TheHybridShooter oh yeah I get you! You gotta get what you want to use.
I love my sony a7siii
Thank you :)
No 3:2 video output in raw... Total bummer for those anamorphic fans
