1000km race it takes 6 hours 161 laps of 6.25km. Its a normal public road. It is done once a year and its coming up soon again. Australia stops for the race on the Sunday..you get the beer and the nibblies and your mates and you watch this race all day. I have driven this road and it is almost incomprehensible how fast these guys drive the circuit. It is the hardest and best race in the world
Well, as someone headed up the mountain in 9 weeks, this is a pleasant surprise. Bathurst is one of the handful of classic tracks in world motorsport and it remains exciting because of how little room for error there is.. it's a truly unforgiving track.
One of the best reactions i have watched of our beloved Mt Panorama, Bathurst track yet! If you were that intense on this video, then you'll love the Bathurst rabbit hole. Check out record breaking videos & crashes.
We just came back from NSW and stayed in Bathurst for a few days. I am not any kind of racing fan, but when we drove the circuit I got goosebumps. Bathurst is part of Australian folklore.
There's NOTHING like our Bathurst. It's the place to be in October. I've been twice, and will make the trek east next year, can't wait. Great promo Larko, you're a legend m8
My brother won a comp to be a pit crew for down Sandown 500 once and transferred it to me, Larko' is an absolute gentleman. I will never forget being in the pit garage. When you go and watch on the side it is loud but NOTHING like the roar of V8's coming of the starting line when standing in the garage with the pit crew.
Scott McLaughlin got 2nd in the indycar race today, an Australian supercars legend. He managed to master a lap of bathurst. Wasn't scared of those nashville walls, put it on pole too.
I’m not sure if you’re already aware of this but the moment you got up and walked away from the computer was the moment when that driver broke his leg, got messed up quite badly and was hospitalised. Great reaction of “The Great Race”.
Traditionally a Ford vs Holden competition (but on rare occasions taken out by one of the lesser manufacturers). A lot of us old farts still remember watching the duels between Peter Brock (General Motors Holden) and Dick Johnson (Ford) over a slab of coldies. Great race.
With NFL football , its became softer because of the money involved in paying players MILLIONS of dollars per season so teams want to keep the players healthy to get their monies worth , not just American sports have gotten softer , have alook at some 60s and 70s ruby and AFL games and how much harder the games were back then
I remember selling programs for the Hardie Ferodo 500 in the late '60s, then the James Hardie 1000 in the '70s in Bathurst. The Easter Bike races were good too!
Larko the man, the myth, the legend. No one can explain it like him without making you feel like you know nothing, this man is so loved let's just say he was fired for a whole 2 months. People power.
Yep - and you can watch the races back into the seventies on UA-cam. One hell of a race. Drivers come from all over the world to race here. Giant Testicles required, a very fast brain and the best team - and if nothing goes wrong, you get to finish. It is called the Great Race for a reason. So do you think NASCAR is tough anymore ? Watch one of the races mate.... see what it is like
"what sort of race track did y'all design" Its a road that people actually live on and a couple times a year, crazys drive on it as fast as they can. Barely any run off areas and nothing but concrete walls to catch you if you make a mistake lol.
100 Kph is about 63 miles per hour. At the end of Conrod straight, they are doing about 190 mph. Across the top of Mount Panorama they'll hit between 120-140 mph. Mount Panorama isn't a racing circuit but a public road that was originally made in the 1930's. If you look on some of the wide shots at the end of Conrod Straight, you can actually see the driveway entrances and private residences.
You need to check out Greg Murphy's "Lap of the Gods" at Bathurst from I think 2002 or 2003 when he broke the track record, unbelievable driving. Would be really interested in your comments.
Did a hot lap or two of it when it was a ‘not so policed’ public road back in the day ( 40 years ago). Navigator in my hubby’s HoldenHX Monaro that was fitted with a Supra 5 speed gearbox and LSDiff. Insane drive of a lifetime.
If you come to Australia and go to Bathurst you too can drive on the circuit. It is a public road for all but a few weeks each year. Stick to the posted speed limits however.
6 hours (plus any stoppages for crashes and safety car), 161 laps, 1000kms, Uphill & downhill, narrow tough corners, bumps and that damn grate. That's Bathurst 1000 endurance race on a street circuit
Its called Mount Panorama because it is actually a mountain, the elevation from pit lane to the top of the mountain is near 200 metres. In the early days there were no concrete walls to stop the cars from going off the mountain.
Bathurst is inland NSW and a street circuit its fun and goes over a weekend in October its a party for the spectators and really tough for the drivers.
Think of this for a moment. .. After 1,000km of racing this oh so beautifully loved track, the race can still come down to less than a 1,000nth of a second at the checkered flag 6 hrs after starting.
Welcome to Bathurst. The race track is a two-way public road with a maximum speed limit of 60kh/35mph. The race is 1,000kms long over 6 hours, with 2 drivers per race car.
Bathurst the best family event in the aussie family ❤ Oof the goosebumps just watching it the most entertaining race in the world and the most amazing memories throughout my whole life Ford Vrs Holden V8❤❤🎉
Bathurst is 161 laps, 6 hours. Each car has 2 drivers changing after a certain number of laps, usually the main driver starts the race for about 1/3 then codriver does about a 1/3 maybe a little more then the main driver finishes. And they get so hot & sweaty they can loose 3 - 5 kg by the end of the race. There was a NAS car champion took a hot lap of Mt Panorama in the passenger seat. I can't think of his name, about an hour ago I watched an American reactor "Squirrel" react to it.. check it out if you dare
Channel 10tried to rid of Larko. There was a huge uproar from the public, this man is a legend here. He stayed exactly where he was and where he should always be! Commentating at Bathurst so up,yours Channel,10!! I have loved Bathurst all of my life.My aunt will not answer her phone during Bathurst! We are the female rev heads in our family!!!
Theres a reason its known locally as " the great race".. 161 laps, one car 2 drivers. 6 hours of rac8ng,every year in October.. as you enjoyed this try ( if u havent already) searching for nascar legend DW, Darrell waltrip, as he gets a lap of the track, its hilarious 😊
Oh, and i forgot to mention, half the time its raining(End of the GTR Godzilla 1992), kangaroos (Paul Radisich) decide to cross the track or pisspots on the hill throw a rock at the cars (Dick vs the rock)...... So Larko only described the obvious fun to be had here..... Googling those other runs in the brackets should bring you the replays. Honorable mention (Brocky in the wet)
No one describes it better than Larko himself. One thing for sure is the cameras don't do this place justice.........the sheer drop down in elevation is hard to comprehend until you have driven round the track yourself and it is definitely worth doing 👍🇦🇺
Check out Darrel Waltrip hot lap of Bathurst mount panorama in 2011 it is hilarious , he is a retired NASCAR champion and it scared him. But it funny to watch. 😃🤣😃🤣 👍😎 🇦🇺
My favourite is the King of the mountain Peter Brock doing a lap around Bathurst with the camera in the car and him driving explaining what he is doing in the middle of the race.
The town of Bathurst is located about 200 km west of Sydney, Australia. A city steeped in history with a population of about 45,000. Usually held in October, the Bathurst 1000 is held once a year. You can drive, take the train, or fly from Sydney. It has been held since the early 1960s. There are 161 laps, the time is 6 hours, the distance is 1000km. You'll be surprised to learn that the track is a public road. The circuit is surrounded by many homes with driveways backing onto it. I've driven around it many a time. Do yourself a favour, drive to the speed limit. Numerous crashes and spectacles, but the safety incorporated in these cars, is second to none. Drivers are more likely to walk away, with a few bruises. Thanks.
There have been deaths at this track - but they have always made improvements to cars and track, and there have been no deaths in the last 36 years of racing at the "The Great Race". This is a normal street area [except for the new pit lane] when there aren't races. You need to walk or drive it to appreciate the turns, twists and elevation just at normal everyday speeds, let alone hundreds of km per hour over the posted limit.
hey man - don't forget - this is ONE SINGLE lap !! you need to do this again and again and again - with 100% consistency - against others that are doing the same thing - to WIN !!!
You haven’t been to a motor race… until you been to Bathurst ! Lucky enough to see the great man Brock win twice 83 84…also Murphy Skaife Tander Lowndes…
Mate, we didn't design this race track, outside of the Bathurst weekend, it is public road. You could be towing a caravan behind your 4x4 through there...... It just happens do double up as the BEST racetrack on earth
Fun fact , The Mount Panorama race track is a PUBLIC ROAD for most of the year anyone can drive around it (inside the speed limits) , And the video doesnt show just how high these cars climb but just how blind some of those corners real are, I take my hat off to the skills of these drivers , only the Nuremberg circuit in Germany is tougher than mount panorama , these do 161 laps over 6 hours , Thats Tough racing
Most of the year, this 'racetrack' is just a regular road. A lot of Australians travel to Bathurst during the year just to do a few circuits of the track BUT the boys in blue, ie Police, keep a close eye on making sure ppl obey the regular speed limit. Expect it's an excellent revenue raiser for the State w/all the speeding tickets they'd hand out. The track would be closed off for 5-7days in preparation for the various races that take place on the circuit, eg vintage cars, Formula 3, V8 Utes & the actual race for Supercars.
I've been on a hot lap around Bathurst - it was terrifying. The fact that these drivers do 161 laps to finish this race is incredible. And Mark Larkham is absolutely right - it's concentration at it's max for 6 hours - one slight mistake can end your race.

We're tough Down Under, love a challenge! Wait till you see a kangaroo jump onto the track! Bathurst is 6 hours of non stop excitement, oh, and rain makes it even more dangerous and thrilling! We Aussies know how to race
Does anybody remember the speeds that Brock got to before they installed The Chase for safety? I seem to remember him redlining his car at 360-70 before final turn, or have I glorified the old races? Lol🤨 honestly cannot differentiate…
Not many people take note of the somewhat of an in joke name on the race track. Conrod Straight. It name is obvious and something litteral. Its a lengthy straight where all cars can hit their Maximum speed of 300kph or 180mph and all drivers of the past must be aware of just how hard to push, lest the engine suddenly have a random case of explosive disassembly and a conrod desides to leave through the side of the block. These new cars have limiters so it isnt as important anymore.
Now that you’ve seen this you should absolutely check out the video of NASCAR driver Darrell Waltrip being a passenger in one of our V8 Supercars doing a hot lap of Bathurst…….. absolute GOLD!!!! Best reaction I’ve ever seen to riding our great race track.
Nobody could describe that track like Larko just did. Former driver, team owner and now in commentary
Job well done Larko!!!
100%

It's a public road... but it hasn't been "normal" for decades.
Most Australian public roads aren't race tracks, they're goat tracks.
We all know that marw
Yes❤

that clip will never get old. he was hanging on for grim death and lost a lunch he hadnt even had yet.
It's hilarious 😂 😂😂
The Bathurst 1000. Greatest car race on the planet. Buckle up and pump the brakes.
We just came back from NSW and stayed in Bathurst for a few days. I am not any kind of racing fan, but when we drove the circuit I got goosebumps. Bathurst is part of Australian folklore.

Part of the Mount Panorama course is actually public road most of the year
And quite often they also have to avoid the odd kangaroo crossing the track
Jenny Bowd-Mount Panorama is a public road with a 60 kph speed limit all year excepting race weeks.
The whole circuit is a public rd.
And an echidna...
You have to watch Peter Brock in the wet. Insane.
As well as the track itself you have to worry about the kangaroos haha
And echidnas...
Scott McLaughlin got 2nd in the indycar race today, an Australian supercars legend. He managed to master a lap of bathurst. Wasn't scared of those nashville walls, put it on pole too.
Yep. But Scott is a Kiwi. Just like the other Scott, the Dixon one.

Lmao bro!
Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear agrees with you he also said thats why they dont have F1 world champions either
@@jimspink2922 There were two actually - Phill Hill jr in 1961 and Mario Andretti in 1978.

Hells yeah. My suggestion. Will watch when I get home from work
Yeahhhhhhh I got a walk away
Thank you for that.
Plus how good is that video
I was never into it but damn this intro is super hype
And that's just the start, after that first lap you have to do it another 160 times; in 6 to 7 hours.
Love this video! Just remember that was one lap...now 160 to go!
I still watch this to this day homie.

I’ve been watching Bathurst since 1971 when I was a kid it’s a sacred Aussie tradition
Those cars are sooooo loud. Also some of the best motor bike racing there, wonderful track. You need to watch a full race.

I think this bloke has given the best reaction to this video he needs to come to Bathurst and hop in the car and do a lap
There have been fatality's on that track by the way.
Its cool to see peoples reactions to seeing bathurst for the first time
Now you know why we call it " the great race"
Yep been to this race twice and this video doesn't exaggerate at all. This track is insane!
8:29 that was Chaz mostert in that car, he broke his leg in that accident, he also won Bathurst in 2014

Definetely watch that video
This is pure lunacy, but fantastic . It is actually a suburban road.
