If my Destiny's Already Decided by God, Why Should It Matter What I Do? | Dr. Shabir Ally

  • Our writer Sarah Jafari makes a special appearance on set! She asks, "Why should it matter what I do if my destiny is already determined by God?"
Dr. Shabir Ally says that if everything is predetermined by God in advance, and God has already decided who will end up in Hell or Paradise, it wouldn't make sense for God to send prophets and a book of guidance and tell us He will determine our outcome on the Day of Judgment. He says that the two concepts, free will and God's omnipotence and omniscience, are a mystery that transcends religion. He suggests that God has determined some broad parameters, within which human beings have freedom to choose. These choices and actions will determine whether we go to Paradise or Hell.

The way I see this is that we as humans got the freedom of choice. But God knows what we will chose, not because he has predetermined, but because he knows the past and he knows the future.

Does not matter what you think.

It's the paradox of having God-given free will and the fact that He already knows what choices you will make before you've made them. Which is essentially the test of this life and what determines where we end up when we die and are brought before the judgment seat of God. Mark, have you ever seen one of those ‘choose your own adventure’ books? Those books present the reader with a branch point where they choose how the want to proceed (to get in the car, turn to page 20; to ignore the car and keep walking, turn to page 30; etc).
In the case of these books, ‘all possible outcomes’ of all decision points are already written, however it is up to the reader which path they will take. This is how I reconcile the idea of free will with God knowing everything in advance. That, and also that God is outside of our dimension of time, and therefore can see concurrently, our past, present and future.

Comment coming from a non-hijabi : I don’t have a problem with a non-hijabi interviewing and asking a scholar. A person should never feel intimidated and judged to the point where they turn very faraway from Deen and religion because they don’t feel accepted for the level of faith they have reached or the lack of it.
From a positive point of view, this may encourage everyone to feel free to come and ask questions and inquire about Islam without feeling shunned or lost for the rest of their life. Many people never had the luxurious Islamic upbringing or great role models.
Why can’t we be happy and encourage new muslims or any Muslim to learn about their religion without harsh judgement or superficiality?
I guess the chaos and misunderstandings stem from the fact that Hijab is an obligation and the interview is apparently taking place in a mosque (at least we all agree that hijab is mandatory in a mosque setting). Another point could just clarify where the moderator is coming from and she could just explain how she is interested to learn more about Islam. The scholar could also mentions how everyone is welcome to ask and no one should feel too small or inadequate. Maybe these clarifications or modifications can stop all the negative comments and attacks

Simply put, you have no choice when and where you're born, your physical condition at birth, your parents and their financial status. What you do, what you strive for, given the circumstances is what you'll be judged on.
Allahh transcends time and space, we, on the contrary, are confined to it. Nothing happens without his absolute knowledge and permission, everything happens because he allows and wills it to happen, so when he gives us free will, it means we choose a path or a course of action, but it only happens with Allahh's permission and will.

You nailed it. And I couldn't agree more. So tired of the image of Islam in the West being monopolized by Hijabis. The headscarf "hijab" is NOT a mandate in Islam either in the Quran or any reliable Hadith and the majority of women in the Muslim world do not wear one. If a woman wants to wear it, fine, it's her right to do so. But Islam advises modesty in dress and behavior for both MEN and WOMEN and above all proper conduct. Yet social media is bombarded with immodest Hijabis with 30 pounds of paint on their face, tight figure revealing outfits doing cringy things while pushing this Hijab agenda. It's ridiculous. Non Hijab wearing devout Muslim women are flying F-16's in Pakistan's air force. Are they not Muslims? The only time covering of the head makes sense is while praying or visiting a mosque and that can be done without a "hijab". This is nothing more than pre-Islamic Arab culture parading as Islam and many are pushing this Arabization amongst Muslims in spite of Arabs being the minority in Islam.

Like the terrain is set, the relief is set, the danger is set, the people are chosen, the rules are defined, the punishment is declared and the purpose is told. Still, the candidates do end up making their own choices even though things were predestined for them. Some choose to kill, others choose to save and work together. Some turn selfish and cruel, others choose to make the most of their time. Make sense?

My answer to this this that we are time bound. And God is not. Just like a creature living in 2 dimensions cannot imagine a 3D world, and we living in a 3D world cannot understand what 4D would mean, we being living in a time based world where something happens BEFORE or AFTER an event cannot imagine/understand Allah's knowledge of something that is GOING TO HAPPEN and are confusing it with predestination. In fact we are trying to fit the creator into our box of time but exists irrespective of time so it does not make sense to think along those lines. If a head was to pop up behind a wall, it would only make sense of we can imagine a 3D world (having depth behind the wall's length and breadth). For someone with a 2D understan it would be nothing short of magical to see something coming out of nothing (because of lack of the depth perspective). Similarly we lack an understanding of what it means to be not be bound by this restriction of time and are unable to understand how knowledge of some future event (time bound thought) does not necessarily mean it is forced on us by Him(who is beyond time).

In Islam, it is also mentioned in the Quran and Hadith that God will change out fate when we do good deeds and obey Allah such as giving charity and stopping from wrongful deeds like alcoholism etc. So this mean we human have a good amount of control on our lives. To be successful in the hereafter is just simply by obeying Allah swt. When we disobey Allah swt persistently then we are sealing our fate of condemnation.

With regard to the question this lady (the host) asked Dr Shabir Ally, about predestined “actions” (Mas’l Qada”u wal Qadar) to understand this question and it’s answer, does require first some basics of Islamic faith: one important pillar of Eman (faith) is that, every Muslim believer, should believe in Divine Decree (Al-Qadar). We appreciate the effort of Dr Shabir and the host Sarah to try to let folks understand this crucial question in Islamic discourse, but I’d say that during a little time that Dr Shabir availed for answering this question, it’d not be sufficient for audience to understand its rational meaning not only for non Muslims but also for Muslims themselves.. this is a question that comes every time in different mosques: Muslims do ask the same question but until today no one has been able to convince or satisfy a big number of Muslims who had been asking the same question. My point here is that there are some topics that ulemas should not open up discussions especially in this modern societies because the information spread easily, very quick to the extent that if the message is wrongly perceived it can lead to disarray many people(s). I’m not discouraging discussions on pertinent topics like this but I’d suggest discussing it in a manner that is well prepared and with enough time to show a case in a wide length discussion bringing in at least most of pertinent arguments from ulemas.

Qadar means the decree of God. God, being the all-knowing, knows what would take place, what each person would do before they are created by God. It is not that God forced them to do what they would do it is simply that God knows what they would choose to do so that each one would be responsible for what he chose to do in his life.

The Conscious observer effect plays an important part as decoherence or what is called the collapse of the wave function when observed by measuring instruments. Therefore quantum potentia is realised. GOD has put in place the mechanism to constrain our free will as well as suffer the consequences of our free will (within the constraints) if we make bad choices. If we do good, it comes back to us through a chain of reactions and if we do evil it comes back to us through a chain of reactions.

This is actually relatively simple concept to understand if and only if you don’t bound Allah (Swt) to time. To Allah, there’s no past, present or future, he is always there and being omniscient he knows everyone’s destiny too but he didn’t decide it for any human being, rather we are going to reach the destiny we are making with our own actions. If we just say that all that has happened, is happening or will happen to me is decided by Allah, then we are ignoring the whole free will and actions, hence our accountability and that would be same as Iblees when he blamed the almighty for his actions that made him cursed.

  • @abdella4

It can be both. Just because your future is predetermined doesn't mean you don't have free will. For example, if I know for certain that in one week a neighbor of mine will get robbed due to a series of actions that they will take. It doesn't mean during that week they don't have free will. They can CHOOSE to do anything but they decided to post on facebook that they were going on vacation. They decided not to get a security system. They decided to leave the front door unlocked on the day of their trip and they got robbed. That was their destiny. But it only happened because of the decisions they were always going to make because of who they are. God knows their personality and their fate.
To have knowledge of the future is to know how things end. Living is how we come to understand the decisions we were always going to make.

Allah also has not destined anyone to commit murder or rape or any other major sins like taking Partners with Allah. For a Merciful God, this is not possible. As Dr. Shabir said, He has sent messengers after messengers to set humankind on the straight path. We have the Freewill. Therefore we are responsible for our deeds. There are three things:
    1. Human free will
    2. Qada & qadr
    3. Allahs will
Human have the right follow their ego and their fitrah... And the qada & qadr has set up laws like if they follow ego then end in hell and if they follow fitrah then end in paradise. But even if a person who have lived his life with sin, Allah may forgive him and let him enter paradise, because thats Allah's will as he say he will let people enter paradise whomsoever he wills and it is also said in quran he will put people from hell to paradise whosoever he wills.... Similarly he also can put believers to hell as well if he wish... So as a muslim, one has to surrender to Allah, wheather he is going to push us into hell or paradise... By surrendering as a rule Allah gives us chance to meet him.. But if we go go against his will even if we are predestined for hell, chances to meet him is low so we have to surrender

For folks who would like to a little bit deepen their knowledge in the Qadar (predestiny issues), please read the explanation below:
    Dua can change Destiny
As for dua, it is very true that yes, it CAN change one’s destiny or qadr.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Nothing can change the Divine decree except dua”. [Musnad Ahmad, 5/677; Ibn Majah, 90; Jami` Al-Tirmidhi, 139. Classed as hasan by Albani].
    And the Prophet also said:
“No precaution can protect against the decree of Allah. Dua is beneficial with regard to what has been decreed and what has not been decreed. The dua meets the calamity that has been decreed and wrestles with it, until the Day of Resurrection.” [Tabarani]
The above two ahadith, or Prophetic narrations, clearly provide proof for the fact that a sincere believer’s supplications or calls to Allah can alter their decree or destiny viz. what the angels had written in his or her decree at the command of Allah.
Furthermore, even if a believer’s dua’s go unanswered in this world i.e. he or she doesn’t get what he or she prayed for, these dua’s never actually go ‘wasted’, so to speak.
Rather, they are either written in their book of deeds as good deeds for the believer, for which they will be rewarded in the Hereafter, or they avert a calamity from happening to him or her i.e. distressful, sorrowful, and difficult situations and life events that were about to happen to them.
    Allahu aalam (..)

    Dear sir
Quran has very clear indication about predestination but hadith has contradicted it and spread notion of taqdeer. Though the ayat tells clearly that man can become what he is latent in him. You rightly said that qadr is measurement and all things and beings given a degree of reaching the highest point that is his measurement. Therefore, no taqdeer but make out of it.
"Taqdeer ke paaband hai namadat o jamadaat, momin hai faqat ahkaam e elahi ka paaband" (Allama Iqbal)

    Surah At-Tariq
    إِنَّهُمْ يَكِيدُونَ كَيْدًۭا
    وَأَكِيدُ كَيْدًۭا
Verily, they are but plotting a plot
And I (too) am planning a plan
The verse points out that Allah Azza wa jal is actively planning the outcome based on the efforts of the good and bad for everyone, and whatever has happened as an outcome or an event was part of his plan at that moment, which is for the good of all and the just of plans.
We can’t be lame and lazy with no efforts saying that anyway Allah has planned so why to strive, it must rather be like “let me strive to the best of my strengths and pray that Allah plans what’s best for me in the here and the hereafter” and then whatever happens as an outcome is the plan that he did for you/us and there can’t be any better plan.
And this is just my interpretation and belief based on what Allah expects of us as mentioned throughout the Quran (to strive, to do good, to abstain from bad, to use the intellect he’s gifted), but Allah alone knows the best!

I’d comment here by saying that, hijab is mandatory for Muslim women. It’s by their choice to comply with the shariah law or ignore it! If something is mandatory for Muslim societies should be regarded as it is. But how it’s applicable should be referred to individuals with their free will to do so. There’s an experience folks should know: if someone is not wearing hijab today, it’s not the end of her Islam! Tomorrow or near/far future she could repent and be back to the right path! Everything is possible. We ask Allah for help and He’s able to help everyone in his or her circumstances:🙏

Of course l respect what you believe however being an Islamic scholar and not having proper knowledge on Kader is shocking to me. I sincerely and seriously recommend Mr. Ally to read further on destiny literature over the centuries especially Imam Rabbani, Imam Ghazali, Sadeddin i Teftazani and Said Nursi who brings a more contemporary and wholistic approach to Kader. Hence Anyone reading this comment and wondering about the Kader and don’t have much time to spend reading all of those scholars, l can suggest one which would answer all of your questions, more properly a section from a demonstration of Quran. The book name is “ Words” chapter “ 26.Word” written by Said Nursi. I can provide you free pdf and answer point you are confused about.

Determinism has been a cause for much tyrrany and the other extreme of only freewill leaves Allah out of the equation. Certainly a much deeper topic than can be discussed here by an 8 min video.
