  • In this video we continue with the brakes (when will this brakes saga end?) using the Harrison lathe we turn the top for the brake column and get it pressed into the column. I then clean up the hand wheel for the top of the pull rod. Exciting stuff.....honest!

Hi Matt, I like the Locktite idea for the bushing. Been following you and Gauge 1 builders on You Tube while working on my Cole's steam pumper. Your locomotive is more like the "Cad Plans" backhoe I built in the shop a number of years ago, very substantial.

Hi Dick, fantastic to hear from you, I do hope you're well. This is a substantial locomotive, its much bigger than I imagined too!! Have you made a return to filming videos yet? All the best, Matt 👍

Wouldn't do it like that if I were you... Informative as ever Matt. (Hope the nearest sink doesn't suffer from a serious dose of rust - even a stainless or ceramic sink - now that you have started machining cast iron!) All the best matey.🤓

Now then buddy, I wouldn't do it that way either, but I'm winging it!!! I knew cast made a mess........ but this is ridiculous!! Can't wait for the cylinders! 😂 All the best, Matt 👍

Suggest a mask is a good idea - stops the pillowcase getting dirty! Also a carefully aimed vacuum cleaner hose really helps... On the lathe you fool, not the pillowcase! 🤓@@MattChiversWorkshop

Hahahaha! wondered where the vacuum was aimed at to start! 😂

    Matt,
How about broaching ( or filing?) a square hole on the hand wheel, and mill a square on the shaft?
    Or a keyway?
Nice fettling BTW…. filthy stuff that cast iron eh?
    Regards
    Robert
PS Recently saw a UA-cam vid. on the development and evolution (enlargement?) of the Tinkerbell ‘class’ in
    7 1/4” gauge.

If you put a grub screw on it, it will deform and pinch (not that important in the grand scheme of things, but it will happen). IMO, you should notch the lip with a round file and put a pin in the lip you have the riser pipe. That way, when you put the sleeve in, it's locked in place by the pin. just my 2 cents.

That's a good idea aserta, I like that. We are always interested in ideas and hopefully others that read the comments are as well so keep them coming. All the best, Matt
